A Quilt for Baby

Rate this book
The creator of Floss stitches together a comforting new baby gift - and a gentle tribute to family and home.

"There is a farm far away from the town, in a valley in the hills where
a river runs. . . . This is home, my little one. This is where we live."

As Mother sews a quilt for Baby, she quietly tells its story, patchwork square by square. There are the frolicking sheep and lambs, and there’s the collie, Floss, who helps Daddy herd them. There are the mare and her frisky foal, a flapping goose and her gosling, a cat curled up with her kitten. And when the story is done, there is a soft quilt to surround Baby with all the scenes of a family’s familiar world.

A mother stitches a story of home into a quilt for her baby. With delicate, realistic illustrations, this one will probably appeal more to the parents than to the kids. Not that there's anything wrong with that; I happen to enjoy welling up over a sweet picture book. Would make a nice shower gift, I think.

I evaluated this for our farm animal story time. A mother tells her newborn all about the animals on their farm. I like the illustrations, but the story is really more of a lullaby. It would be a good one for bedtime for a kid who likes animals.

I loved the pictures in this story! They were detailed and they helped expand the meaning of the text. The story itself had a musical quality and was about farm animals and their babies.

This beautifully illustrated book revolves around a mothers love for her baby. Though not a new theme, a mother's love is here described through her careful designing of the baby's quilt. The mother tells the story of the quilt to her baby. In dreamy colors the quilt shows the farm and the animals to be found there. Each animal and the animal's baby is named. This is an excellent source for farm and animal vocabulary as well as an opportuntity for children to practice animals sounds.

A Quilt Baby is a book with great illustrations of a family's farm which the mother brings to life through her story telling to her baby child. The mother is making a quilt for her baby to sleep tight night after night on the farm, however the mother's calming story of all the farm animals and beautiful country land maybe the reason the baby eases to sleep. The mother is just telling the baby about the farm, fields, and barns that one day the baby will be walking through.

This is a beautiful book of comfort and family. The author drew from her childhood memories of her mother quilting, and created this story of a mother making a quilt for her baby. Very soothing story with lovely illustrations.

The mother makes an applique quilt for the baby while describing all the things on the farm that the quilt blocks stand for.
