Pretty Kitty

SHE WAS THE MAJOR'S LADY!

And how gallantly Major Quentin had offered for Kitty. He was a British Army officer and she a red-haired Southern belle when they met during the war in Washington. He saved her from certain dishonor and brought her here to London's mad whirl of balls and masquerades.

But in England Kitty was a foreigner, and the love he had professed for her seemed to vanish from Quentin's heart. He had made another promise long ago...to another woman. Yes, Kitty was the Major's lady, but for how long?

Read: 11/15/25
Setting: War 1812, Virginia, England
trope: MOC, class differences, amnesia
Kitty's POV

plot:
Ever since her father died, Kitty's world has been placed upside down. Her mother married right away to a man Kitty finds disgusting. One night, her stepfather's brother sneaks into her room. He tries to SA in order to marry her for her fortune but Kitty is able to get away. Unfortunately, she arrives in Washington just in time for the British to burn it down. Kitty is rescued by a British officer and spends the night with him (just) sleeping. Her reputation is ruined thanks to her ex-fiance and his spiteful mother. Gareth feels honored bound to marry Kitty, even though he is betrothed.

Next scene is Kitty on the a ship to England. It's been 5 months and Kitty and Gareth are in love. I know because we get a brief summary. Unfortunately, a storm comes and Gareth suffers a head wound. He wakes up with amnesia and can't remember anything that's happenedin the past year. 🙄. Gareth thinks that Kitty must have tricked him into marriage. If not for her he would be with the love of his life.

England is not welcoming to an American at a time of war. Kitty's reception is cold but she soon starts to melt the ice of her SIL and staff. Kitty decides to live her own life by entering society. She prays that one day Gareth will remember her and the love they shared. Though, Kitty fears that once Gareth sees his ex, he will abandoned.

dislikes:
1. Kitty was selfish. After only 2 days of dealing with her sulking husband, Kitty gives up! Oh, true love 🙄 Maybe, if you sat down and had an actual conversation with him, he might start remembering. Instead, she abandons him for society, praying he'll one day remember her.
2. Gareth was honorable to marry Kitty and he has a sister. That's all I know of him! I don't even know what he looks like. Who knows what he was up to because Kitty never bothered to ask.
3. OW drama without the OW ever making an appearance. Kitty had no competition because the woman wasn't even there to steal him away.
4. Gareth's sister brutally betrays Kitty twice and there were no consequences because she was sorry. She even gets HEA with the man who professed his love for Kitty 10 pages before the ending.
5. This author's writing style was atrocious! I felt like I was reading her notes. The author hadn't quite figured out how to bind important events together into a cohesive story. Everytime something got interesting, she would time jump and then the h would summarize what happened. 🤪 So, instead of witnessing her interactions with Gareth, we get a synopsis of the relationship.

liked: The OW's brother, David. He falls in love with Kitty. We at least get some conversations and romance, too bad it's with the wrong character!

Conclusion: I haven't read a book this bad in a long time. I can't believe someone was willing to publish this story!

Once again, Zabrina Faire brings the drama. This time it's amnesia, but there's always more going on than that. This is another one where I'm annoyed that a minor character didn't get a comeuppance -- in this case, the H's sister.

This was good, with plenty of melodrama, sort of a Regency era soap opera. The H and h get married under unusual circumstances, the H gets amnesia and forgets her, the H's flighty sister is in love with the OM who tries to seduce the h, the OW (supposedly the H's true love and also the OM's sister) hovers in the background, while the h's villainous step-uncle (her stepfather's brother, who's behavior was in no way avuncular) shows up with a scheme to get her family home, and the h (listening to her sister-in-law's bad advice) tries to make herself into the kind of woman she thinks the H wants in case he never remembers who she really is.

Yes, it's a convoluted story, but also entertaining.
