SCIENCE OF PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS

Rate this book
Percussion instruments may be our oldest musical instruments, but only recently have they become the subject of extensive scientific study. This book focuses on how percussion instruments vibrate and produce sound and how these sounds are perceived by listeners.

This book is definitely directed to scientists or instruments builders, not percussionists. Much of the book is pretty hard to follow for anyone without an education in acoustics. And perhaps fluid-dynamics.

The book covers pretty much all kinds of worldwide percussion instruments (including wine glasses!), in a beautiful methodical way. The historical notes for each instrument can be appreciated by all.

I wish Rossing presented the scientific data in a way more usable to musicians but I have to admit that the author never made such a promise. He instead remained focused and coherent to his vision, and that is something I admire nonetheless.
