If I were a robot.... I'd have enhanced reading abilities!
This book was cute, but was not my favourite of all of Scott Gordon's books. But not all books can be the best, now can they?! I think it is another cute addiction and full of wacky, fun and zaney ideas but it just wasn't my favourite. Kids who love science, technology and robots would kill for this book!! I think it's great that Scott has such a unique library of stories! Every kid should love at least one of his stories! He doesn't just stick to one genre and I applaud him for that.
Yet again, the 3D computer animated style is back, and the robot has cute costumes! The costumes are always my favourite part of his stories. His creativity with the costumes is just too good! AND THERE's A LIGHTSABER! And maybe a deathstar?! The easter eggs in this book are definitely the best part!
Side note: There's another uncanny valley creepy guy in this book. That drops me score down by quite a bit. No amount of Star Wars references can fix the creepy, uncanny valley men.
I love how the synopsis declares, "Over 40 pages in all!" As if quantity is the important thing here.
That attitude shows in this slapdash "story" about a boy imagining what he would do if he were a robot. The first part is boring, but not terrible. He'd have a suit of armour and fancy weapons so he could fend off pirates and the Evil Overlord's army (whoever they are). He'd have a secret workshop and design rockets to reach distant worlds. He'd even build himself a robot dog for company. But then, in the latter half of the story, things get weird and existential. Suddenly, the narrative switches to almost all dialogue, and we get to read a conversation between a disembodied voice that echoes "into eternity" and the boy (who's now a rusty old robot stuck on a planet all by himself). The boy decides he doesn't want to be a robot and joins his father for dinner.
Because this book is put together with stock imagery from various illustrators, it has no cohesive style. There are plenty of pictures similar to what we see on the cover... but also plastic-looking 3D-rendered humans, random sparkles on a gradient background, paintings of rusty robots, pictures of planets, Dalí-esque imagery, and computer-generated sci-fi landscapes. The book looks like it's having an identity crisis.
This author is certainly prolific, and while I'm sure his own kids probably enjoy his attempts at picture-book writing, I don't think these titles are really suitable for public consumption. This is actually the second book I've read by this author, and I'm probably less impressed with this one than I was with the first. I'm just glad I picked this one up as a freebie; I'd be really annoyed right now, otherwise!
I love the illustrations and my son (almost 5) loves robots. Unfortunately, the story is not very strong. It starts out as a simple list of things and probably would've been better had it just kept along those lines. However, the last portion of the book switched gears rather abruptly and even I was a little lost. I think you're meant to realize that the boy coming up with all the things he could do if he were a robot is day dreaming and his dad interrupts him. In the end he decides he doesn't want to be a robot after all, because his favorite people (his parents) would be there to enjoy it too. The idea is good, but the execution is poor.
I'm glad I got this one for free. I think I saw another book by Gordon advertised on BookBub and followed a link at the end of the book to this one.
What a neat and imaginative story this was and such swell illustrations too! This will surely encourage these youngsters that I would recommend this for as between 3-6 years of age to use their imaginations too. For these ideals I feel that this ebook needs a five star rating for these very young tikes! I received this ebook for free and in exchange for being able to enjoy such a book as this and to help me to see how simple the language needs to be for the young kids and upwards. I now have given it an honest review. Super job Scott! By Angela
The plot of this short book centers on a young boy fantasizing what it would be like to be a robot. Turns out that he is dreaming, and decides that maybe he likes things the way they are.
Illustrations are simple and small. Book is targeted for ages three and up; there are four lines or less on a page, but many of the vocabulary words like impervious, and infiltrate will not be understood by a young reader. The latter part of the book is devoted to ads about the author's other works and links to free stuff. Young aficianados of robots will enjoy it.
This is a fun book for young children. Yes it does have some large words in it but that's where the parent comes in. It's a great read together book. The parent can explain the word's meaning. I think that's great and thus begins the education in preparation for school. The graphics are great as are the colors. This is a book that can be read over and over again. I highly recommend it for all. Scott Gordon I am hoping and looking forward to many more of your great books.
This is a cute book about a boy who wants to be a robot. He talks about what he would do and where he lives, and also in making his robot dog. But in the end where does he really want to be?
I love the pictures that go with the story. They make the story come to life.
I think all young children would love to have this read to them and maybe beginning readers could read this with some help. This also shows what a youngster can do with his imagination. I would recommend this to all parents with young children.
Ok I have read several of Scott Gordon's picture books, this one was fun but a little lame. This life lesson could have had a greater impact, if the robot had more remorse and really missed ed

this book is great for little boys and even a little girl who is into robots. it talks about what children think they want when they grow you but really in the end you still need your parents and friends.

If I Were a Robot is a story for young children about a boy that dreams he was a robot and lives on a planet all alone until he wakes up to his Dad coming to get him for supper. I love pretend books about children using their imagination because they can start discussions about the imaginations of the children in my class. This one is very popular with young boys because the story is about a boy.
I purchased If I Were a Robot as part of an anthology of stories by Scott Gordon.
This is a cute story about a boy imagining that he's a robot. Drawbacks are word count and choice—seemed off for the intended audience—and the illustrations, which could’ve been better. I rate this 3.5 stars.
An interesting book with computer drawings, but it's a little complicated for the age range it's intended for. The topic would be better for older children. I also agree with other reviews that it does abruptly change topic. Ending earlier would have been fine for the 3-6 age group.
Twin 7yo grandkids just read it. They thought it was great. I enjoyed listening to them read it... Only had to sound out a handful of words. The kids were able to follow the story and liked the ending.
I really liked this book! I found out that I actually owned this book on Kindle so I'd thought I read it! A fun little book about imagination and creating your own little world, but in the end loving your family.
I was not as impressed with this Scott Gordon book as I have been with some of his others. I can see this book appealing more to boys because of the robot and the boy at the end.
The robot talks about what he wants to do if he were a robot. It turns out to be a dream that a young boy is having.
A young boy describes what his life would be like if he was a robot. He has quite an imagination. This is a fun way to teach kids about using their imaginations.
I read this to my 4-year-old nephew. He wasn't particularly interested because it wasn't a "cars and trucks book" - not Gordon's fault. However, it was also used much too complicated vocabulary at the beginning for a children's book. The ending was super cute, but it's not a book I could see reading over and over with my nephew.
A cute picture book about a little boy imagining what he'd do if he was a robot instead of a little boy, with digital illustrations that give it a unique look.
