I liked this a lot. It was steamy, which I always like. It was short, which I was in the mood for. And best of all, it was FREE, the awesomeness of which needs no further explanation.

The story line was decent and the writing was great. The scenes flowed along well and all of the dialogue was very smooth and natural. I will definitely read the next one in the series. My only "problems" with the book are personal pet peeves, so take them with a grain of salt.

Alexis. She kind of annoyed me. Her attitude and personality got on my nerves, but mostly, I have trouble respecting someone who would

Dirty sex. Love it. I like it steamy, rough, animalistic, I could go on...what I DON'T like is

Lastly, the ending was pretty damned abrupt.

Like this.

Holy HOTNESS is all I can say about this novella. Man I love a man in uniform anyways. There is something hot about a man willing to lay down his life for his country that makes a girl go weak in the knees. Plus the way Selena tells this story has me wanting more and when I found out book one in this series is out I had to buy it so now I just need to get some time and read it because I need me some more romance stories in my life.

In this story we get to meet Gabe who is a soldier in Afghanistan. Fighting for his country and doing everything the army asks Gabe is comfortable with his life. He is a player and makes it clear to the women he meets that it is nothing more than a tag and bag and nothing else. No feelings no emotions nothing more than a romp in the bed. As Gabe goes through girl after girl he meets Natalya and he feels something more for her but not love just a deep friendship and wants to help her out. So he does help her and have sex with her but soon has to tell her he will not be sleeping with her anymore because he does not have feelings for her and he knows she has feelings for him. SO he puts the brakes on and moves on until he meets Alexis.

Lord Alexis is a breath of fresh air for him but she is no joke because she does not break down to Gabe's whims and his charm. As a matter of fact she checks him at the door and I loved that part of her because she knows what she wants and she knows she is worth more than a one night stand or a notch on anyone's bed post. Will Gabe win over Alexis heart and have a true and meaning relationship? Or will Gabe be left with a broken heart for the first time........

I've read tons of novellas, and this was one of the best. Selena does an excellent job painting the perfect picture of the Afghan desert and the perils the main characters (Gabe and Alexis) face. The story is well-developed and the characters layered. I loved it. Selena's an author to watch, peeps. Don't miss the companion novel "Concealed" that goes with "Camouflaged".

Selena Laurence is the reason I made my perfect romance bookshelf over at Goodreads. I adored Hidden and I could not wait to get my hands on the next book in the Hiding From Love Series. I was able to read an ARC of Camouflaged and *sigh* – absolutely amazing. Definitely another book that is going on my perfect romance shelf.

We have Gabe, the hot guy in uniform, the player, God’s gift to women. He knows what he wants and he doesn’t give the illusion that he is wanting to stick around for more. Gabe is the ultimate alpha male, a hero in uniform. His instinct is to protect.

“Secondly, I’m a soldier. We get ourselves killed to save other people every single day. It’s my job. I’ve been putting myself at risk to protect you for three years now. You just weren’t around to see it.”

That quote stuck with me, not just in relation to the book, but in how it relates to our world now. There are soldiers out there protecting all of us every single day. We just aren’t around to see it. We need to remember that always.

Then there is Alexis. Alexis wants to save the world, what other reason is there for going on UN missions? She isn’t impressed with Gabe when she meets him. I guess calling her babe was kicking things off on the wrong foot. I suppose I’d be wary too. A strong confident gorgeous man standing in front of you calling you babe with a cocky grin? I’d be on the look out for him being a player too. She wasn’t looking for a playboy when she started on her trek over to Afghanistan. She has baggage back home but will that stop her from seeing where these feelings she has for Gabe will take them.

I love Alexis.

She is a strong female lead. She isn’t whiny when it comes to their situation, which I must admit, I might have whined a little if it was me in the this particular thing they went through. She just buckles down and does what is necessary.

Will they make it through living in a war zone, both physically and mentally? What happens when her time is up with the UN mission?

You have to read it. I’m not spoiling it.

I cannot wait until the next book! A little birdie told me that I am going to love it. If you have read Hidden, and then you read Camouflaged, you’ll know exactly why I asked if there was another one coming. Camouflaged doesn’t have a cliff hanger ending. Don’t worry about that. It was just something I had noticed between the two books and I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Keep an eye out for this one when it releases. You don’t want to miss this perfect love story!

Camouflaged continues Laurence's Hiding From Love series (though it is technically a prequel), and tells the story of Gabe Thompson. While Nick (Hidden) was sent stateside after an incident, Gabe, his best friend, is still in Afghanistan finishing up his second tour of duty. Gabe's always been the player, the proverbial man who runs away from commitment. But, as with any playboy in romanceland, this changes as he begins to fall for Alexis Garcia, the UN volunteer he is assigned to show around the area.

I really liked Camouflaged. I will admit, I still love Laurence's previous novel more, but it's not a big drop in rating (only a half a star). My biggest complaint is a common, but very good one-- I wanted more. I wish this novella had been a bit longer (or that it had been a full-length novel). I wanted more of a resolution in the end. A lot can happen in the six months until Gabe's tour ends and I wasn't completely reassured that their HEA was reached. A few more chapters, or an epilogue, would have helped. Or perhaps another novella or short story covering this couple in the future? (Hint, hint, Ms. Laurence!)

Of course, I'm a bit harsher when rating my novellas, and it's very rare for me to give one a top rating. However, Camouflaged does come very close.

Obviously I loved Gabe. I was a bit unsure at first due to his player attitude, but he turned around. I also respected his strength and dedication, especially by helping to support his mom back in the States. He was sexy (of course!) but he was sweet, in his own way, as he got to know Alexis.

This entire novella is told from Gabe's POV. I liked this, but I also thought at times it would have been nice to see some parts from Alexis' POV, too. I did not connect with her as much and in the end felt like I knew very little about her.

Another wonderful story from Selena Laurence, who is quickly becoming a favorite author or mine. I zipped through Camouflaged within a day and very much enjoyed it. I will be waiting for the next book in this series. For a quick paced, sexy NA romance, be sure to pick up this novella. In fact, pick up this series—you can read Camouflaged and Hidden in any order without missing anything.

4 STARS!

Gabe he's just so cocky, "oh, sweetheart, you don't know me too well. Ask around. You'll find there's a whole lot of things I can do that would interest you. Things that would help you relax." I liked being in his mind, "oh yeah, I thought as I strode out of the tent. We had a lot of unfinished business, and I was just the entrepreneur to handle the transaction." Alexis she's feisty, "do you ever stop?" she asked, her voice rising. "Do you ever stop and think about the other person in the equation? You could be doing all sorts of damage and not have any idea, because you're so focused on 'winning' that you don't care about the collateral damage." Gabe is also a snarky S.O.B, "I looked down at her for a split second. "Thanks for your concern, but I promise not to get killed so I can give you a ride home." I really hope Selena decides to do a full length novel with Gabe and Alexis like when he comes home from war, I mean I know this was a novella but I wanted more.

Wonderfully surprised by Camoflaged. Selena Laurence grabs you from the first paragraph and pulls you into Gage and Alexis' story which keeps you interested until the very end. A fabulous short story to pick up to pass a few hours.

Gage is that cocky, arrogant soldier who thinks he knows what women wants. Enter Alexis, part of a UN contingent and suddenly, Gage's charms no longer work. It's not that Alexis isn't interested, she just doesn't like cocky, arrogant men. Of course, fate would make sure that these 2 have to spend maximum time together so how to they handle their clashing personalities? How about that undeniable attraction, will they be able to resist?

Young love, captured perfectly

What a great novella! Selena Laurence captured the essence of new, young love. Set in the backdrop of the war in Afghanistan, which was exciting, scary, and so tense at times. Selena beautifully honors the dangers faced by servicemembers, and developed a sweet, engaging love story. Bravo!

ARC given in exchange for an honest review....

Excerpt:
“You do realize,” I said, “that this is a mil-i-tary base, right? I mean, you’re surrounded by people with guns. We shoot if we have to, and a lot more often we get shot at. This is the Army, sweetheart,
not a freaking hippie peace rally.”

She looked down at the ground for a second, and I expected her to apologize. Instead, her head popped up, and I stared into the face of fury. Her brows were drawn down into a scowl, her luscious lips were pursed, and her eyes were blazing sparks.
My damn pants got unbearably uncomfortable as my groin tightened. Holy shit, how could someone piss me off and turn me on so much all at one time?

“I’m aware this is an Army camp, Sergeant Thompson. And believe me,
it’s the last place on earth I want to be, but I’m committed to bringing relief to the people here who’ve had their homes and their lives invaded by a hostile foreign force.”

I turned abruptly, kicked a nearby trashcan, and stomped off toward the center of camp. She was hot on my heels, like a little nipping dog.

“What’s the matter, soldier boy? You don’t have a retort for that one? Ha! I’ll bet not, because how could you argue with the truth? We caught Bin Laden, and yet, here you still are, with your guns and your occupation and your violence. Imagine what it’s been like for these poor people living here the last few years. They don’t know anything about international politics. They don’t care about American interest They just want to feed their families and follow the customs they’ve followed for the last few centuries.”

I stopped again and turned lightning-‐fast to face her. She slammed into me, and I grabbed her arms to keep her from winding up on her ass.

“Oh!” she squeaked before she shrugged out of my grasp. I looked at her hard. She licked her lips, the color climbing in her face as her breath quickened.
There.
She felt it too. She might hate me, but she also wanted me. I stepped closer, and I could hear the rapid little breaths she was taking.

When we were chest to chest, both of us audibly breathing in each other’s air, I said low and slow,
“Have you ever seen what the Taliban does to women, princess? You think they just keep those veils on them because it’s tradition, right? You ever seen what happens to a woman here who lifts that veil in public? Or maybe a woman who lets a man other than her father or brothers or husband speak to her?”

I saw the fear flare in her eyes. Good. You ought to be afraid, little girl. It’s an ugly world out here. This is not the University of Fucking Texas.

“You ever seen what the punishment is if a girl is caught letting a guy kiss her? Well, guess what, babe? I have. Don’t you ever talk to me about how this occupation is what brought violence to these people. Until you’ve seen what I’ve seen, until you’ve watched people die in front of you, you have no right to judge me or the work I do here.”

I looked at her for one more moment, my chest hurting so bad I thought it might explode all over her nice white t--shirt. Then I turned on my heel and walked away.

My Review:
Let me start off by saying I LOVE military men. I think there is nothing sexier then a man in uniform. YUMMY!!! Gabe Thompson totally filled the role for me. He is the ultimate alpha male. He is sexy, a solider, and awesome in bed. HOT DAMN, the total package. Although he is very arrogant I loved him instantly. While on tour in Afghanistan he meets a humanitarian volunteer for the UN named Alexis Garcia.

OMG... I LOVED her. Alexis is a strong women that knows what she wants. So will not take any crap from anyone. Her first impression of Gabe is he is an egotistical Neanderthal. However, when he is assigned to be her escort during her stay they become close. Even with the sexual tension between them they decide to try and be friends. Alexis has a boyfriend back home and doesn’t want to lose him.

These two end up on what could be a deadly mission. Can they survive? What does the future hold for Gabe and Alexis? You will have to read Camouflaged to see. Camouflaged was just the perfect mix of sexual hotness, with some danger, and a little comedy thrown in. This was the first book I have read from Selena Laurence. I have to admit I am HOOKED. I really enjoyed Camouflaged. The only thing I didn’t like, it was too short. I wanted more. I am looking forward to reading Nick’s story in Hidden. I gave Camouflaged 4 1/2 stars.

It was sad, but a fact of life in this country—the women were at the mercy of the men, and often the men were anything but merciful.

Gabe is a soldier, stationed in Afganistan. He has a sexual relationship with a local widow, Natalya. As a widow with no husband to support her, Natalya is forced into a life of prostitution. While Gabe is completely up-front with her, that all he wants is sex, she grows to love him. Gabe cares for her. You can see it in his jealousy of her other men—in how he takes care of her in the little ways that he is able to—fixing things up around the house and bringing her things like blankets and chocolates.

…having sex with her got more and more difficult when I knew there were emotions involved—her love, and my guilt.

Gabe ends things with Natalya. While most will find him to be a complete ass for doing so, I loved Gabe from the start. He reminds me SO much of my guy friends from high school. Gabe was honest with her from beginning. He was not looking for love. But, like most women, Natalya let her emotions take over. As women, we seek out what men try to avoid, love and commitment.

Just after breaking things off with his “whore,” a group of Human Rights inspectors shows up with a bunch of college interns to check out the conditions in the area. Gabe gets buddied up with Alexis. Alexis is a spitfire and is not impressed by Gabe’s “charm.” She calls him on his shit and rather than turning him off, her feistiness only makes him want her more.

“Does that crap work for you… the whole ‘Oh babe, let’s get busy, you and me.’ Are there girls in the world who find that attractive? Do you get laid with lines like that?"
“Yeah, it works for me… and you know what I think… I think it works for you too…You’re afraid you won’t be able to control a guy like me, aren’t you? And you know what? You wouldn’t be able to control me. But I’d take you on the ride of your life, and you’d thank me for it afterwards.”

Holy smokes!!! Gabe *fans self* Gabe… *fans self again* I cannot believe this sexy man came out of the mind of the sweet little lady, you see below. He is such a GUY and I love that. His character is my absolute favorite thing about Camouflaged. While he is a womanizing, smart-ass that thinks with his dick first; Gabe is also a lover and a protector. He is brave and selfless and when he and Alexis find themselves in a hopeless situation, Gabe is a soldier through and through. He is a hero.

Camouflaged blew me away. I was surprised at how well developed the characters were and how amazing the story was for a novella. A lot of authors don't master this in full novels two and three times the size of Camouflaged. Well done Selena!!! I am anxiously awaiting being reunited with my new book boyfriend in Concealed.

Read this book ladies!! Gabe will make your toes curl! And it is only .99! You have no excuses... get the book... read it... love it... and fan-girl all over the lovely Selena Laurence!!! She is amazing!

You gotta go read this people - 5 Outstanding stars!

"I'm not that guy. I never will be. I'm like my old man and his old man before him. We don't rescue people. We aren't nice guys. We don't fall in love."

Oh Selena. Selena, Selena, Selena.

This is quite possibly the BEST EVER NOVELLA I've had the pleasure (and honour) of reading.

It has the right amount of angst, tension, action, sweetness and heart-stopping moments.

"I usually go balls-to-the-wall for what I want"

We meet Gabe in Hidden (Click to read my review). He is the best friend of Nick, Hidden's lead male. He is an intreaguing character and I just knew he had a story to tell.

Gabe is a complete Alpha Male - Hot, Firey Tempered, Badass and completely H.O.T!! This story is set in Afghanistan, where Gabe is stationed with the Forces.

Alexis is a do-gooder. She comes to Afghan with the UN to do some work with locals who have been affected by the war. She is under the illusion that the US Army cause most of the disruption in war-torn area's. Gabe is quick to set her straight in his no-nonsense way.

"We shoot if we have to, and a lot more often we get shot at. This is the Army sweetheart, not a freaking hippie peace rally."

There is connection between Gabe and Alexis from the offset.

"You and I have unfinished business, babe. I'll be seeing you soon."

But there is a catch. Alexis has a boyfriend back home. And Gabe is many things, but a home-wrecker is not one of them.

The rest of this story is filled with action, tension and heart-in-mouth moments. I felt...

0% - 20% Relaxed and gripped in the story

20% - 50% Giddy and waiting on the kissykissy to start.

50% - 90% Raw, ill, worried and completely taken in

90% - 100% Happy

Excerpt

I focused on those gorgeous lips. “I think you’re all bark and no bite, and that you’re trying to chase me away with your bad attitude because you’re afraid of me. I bet you like to be in control of everything all the time, don’t you?”

She swallowed and I felt everything below my belt tighten to the point of pain. I dug my hand into the hunk of hair at the back of her head and gently pulled her toward me. She didn’t resist as my heart rate picked up and her breaths came in little pants.

“You’re afraid you won’t be able to control a guy like me, aren’t you? And you know what? You’re right. You wouldn’t be able to control me. But I’d take you on the ride of your life, and you’d thank me for it afterwards.” I leaned in ever so slowly, my lips hovering over hers as her eyes fluttered shut. I could feel the heat from her face, and her chest grazed mine, setting off sparks all up and down my spine. Her hair was like strands of silk, and I gripped the back of her head tighter, pulling her that infinitesimal bit closer. She had a quick intake of breath and I felt my chest clutch.

What I Love About This Book: So I honestly didn’t know what to expect when reading this prequel and I was honestly pleasantly surprised. I’m always hesitant to read authors I haven’t really heard tons about and I didn’t really look to see the reviews before I got into this but the novella was great! I thought the sentence structures were awesome and the character development was pretty good considering this is a novella, there was no skimping on details when it came to Alex and Gabe. I felt like by the end I really knew each one of them pretty well.

I wasn’t sure where this novella would take me but I absolutely loved the journey. It was interesting to see that soldiers overseas still can have sex lives, and thinking about it makes sense but I guess I never really put too much thought into before. I really liked Gabe he provided nice comic relief when needed but I still took him seriously throughout the story. He definitely is that quintessential hero that all women love so much. Slap an army uniform on him and he is my dream man! There is something about how damaged he is psychologically from his father abandoning him and his mother at a young age that makes you just want to curl up in his lap and fix him in more ways than one!

Alexis in the very beginning kind of pisses me off but I think that’s the intent of her character and it’s not just Gabe’s development in this novella that matters it’s also Alexis’. For someone to go to Afghanistan being so ignorant and one sided was kind of annoying, why go there and help people if you don’t believe in your country being over there in the first place? But I’m glad she essentially came around and some of the scenes between her and Gabe were beyond hot, even if one of them took place in a cold cave.

Cons: I know this is a novella and I get that tons of details can’t go into a novella but I still would’ve liked a little bit more details. I don’t really know what an army camp in Afghanistan looks like so I would’ve liked more descriptions there especially when it comes to the tents that Gabe and Alexis was staying in. I have no clue what an arm tent looks like, how many people fit in it, you know all that good stuff. Also when it comes to details I have no idea what Gabe looks like. There are tons of descriptions of Alexis’ features, but I couldn’t find one thing about Gabe. All I know is that he’s hot and I’m assuming from the cover he has brown hair but it doesn’t even say that in the book. This novella is from his point of view I need something more to go on when it comes to the main character.

This book did not disappoint! I Loved it!!!

Camouflaged takes place in Afghanistan where Gabe meets Alexis, who is there as a volunteer to do aid work for the United Nations. Alexis presents herself as one tough cookie who won't let a player like Gabe seduce her, but whether she wants to admit it or not, she weakens a bit to his charm. Gabe has been assigned to watch out for Alexis and escort her as she fulfills her duties as a volunteer. But suddenly Gabe is in a position where he must protect Alexis's life as well as his.
Things change between them when they are forced into survival mode. what Gabe and Alexis go through in Afghanistan brings them closer in those three days. They get to know each other, while confined in a cave and I just loved seeing Gabe and Alexis come together and seeing how Alexis changes him for the better. Gabe didn’t have some deep dark secret (like in many NA books), but he was a major playboy who had never felt true love, until Alexis. Alexis has a boyfriend and strict Mexican parents who wait for her at home, and we get the idea that Alexis is not happy with her life back home with her boyfriend, Marco, but that life is approved by her parents, who she respects immensely.Being with Gabe might just be a complication. Although almost everyone disapproves of Alexis and Gabe together, only they can truly understand their feelings toward one another. There relationship progressed fast, but it made sense. They were force to spend three days with each other and they knew each other better than anyone else in their lives.

If you enjoyed Hidden, I think you will love this, although it's different.
I have to say, I was never bored reading this, it kept me interested the entire time. What could be better than a story about two people coming together as they try survive in Afghanistan and it ultimately changing both of them in the process.
I knew I would love Gabe, when we were introduced to him in Hidden, ('if only I knew more about him'-I thought)...and I got my wish in camouflaged! Yay :) Read this! You won’t regret...I really have nothing bad to say about it. Gabe and Alexis's story continues in the next book, so we get to see what happens when they come back to reality...will they both interpret their time together in the same way?

You know how I always go on about how I don't like novella's, well this is one I can definitely can get behind. It might help that it's over a hundred pages long and it was so easy to connect with these two main characters.

Gabe is definitely a confident, borderline arrogant player. He looks amazing, has some serious skills and the boy knows it and uses it. Serious is not his game, but it seems that most woman don't mind as long as they can have a little piece of him.

Alexis though is not impressed. She immediately calls out on his BS, but Gabe is not one to back out of a challenge. Except when said girl mentions she has a boyfriend, even guys like Gabe have a limit. Still the tension and chemistry between them is off the charts. If the desert wasn't hot enough for you, these two will put it on fire.

Then things only get more complicated. Gabe is assigned to be Alexis' bodyguard during her stay. Which pretty much means he has to be glued by her side 24/7. This gives them the time to get to know each other better and realizing that the first assumptions they made about each other, aren't necessarily right and that there is more.

When the situation around them, (never forget that they are in a warzone), gets very problematic they will need to rely on each other to get through it. This only seems to intensify the bond between them and certain decisions will need to be made.

I loved it! Gabe and Alexis are amazing characters. She is pretty straight forward, though dares to admit when she was wrong. Gabe is arrogant, but he's also very direct, knows what he wants and goes after it. During this story though we also get to see this other side of him, it's not always jokes, serious is also possible. Partly I felt that the joking around was necessary to counterweight the situation they were in.

This story is told from Gabe's POV so it was very easy to connect with him and see the evolution he goes through. Alexis was also interesting and I could definitely see the appeal. Though while I very much liked her, I would have loved getting inside her head, since she is the one where the emotions are the most conflicted. So I'm hoping that we get that chance in the next book.

I am definitely hooked! I pretty much read all current three books back to back. The characters are simply wonderful and I just needed more of them.

I really enjoyed this book, Selena does a fantastic job building the characters and the story line so that you’re sucked in from page one. This book starts before her other book Hidden, and gives you a better understanding about Gabe. You really see a completely different side of Gabe that you never would have expected.
Gabe Thompson is known as a major playboy, and why wouldn’t he be? He’s gorgeous, an American Soldier and fantastic in bed. He is very crude about his approach to the opposite sex, and is a love them and leave them type of guy, never one to stick around once the emotions start to become involved. After breaking of an arrangement he had with one of the locals, Gabe starts to if and when he’ll get laid again. That’s when he meets the feisty Alexis Garcia.
Alexis is coming to Afghanistan on a UN mission. She is very stubborn and hates it when men are crude when they first meet her. So needless to say, her first impression of Gabe isn’t the best when he starts to hit on her before he even knows her name. I really like her, she is one tough cookie, and isn’t someone you want to mess with. So of course she gives Gabe a piece of her mind after his attempt at flirting. She has someone back home; she doesn’t need this Neanderthal chasing after her like a dog in heat.
Will these two be able to make it through the war zone without it damaging them physically and emotionally? When Alexis leaves to go back to the states, what happens then? Will they keep in contact with one another?
You have to read this book, I’m hoping that there is more of Gabe and Alexis later on; I would love to see where things go with them. You’ll definitely want to read Hidden after this. You get to know Gabe’s best friend Nick, and you don’t want to miss reading his story.

Gabe Thompson had me from the first page of Camouflaged!!! He's an incredibly hot, sexy soldier deployed to Afghanistan who knows how to please a woman and have her coming back for more. He will give them his body but never his heart. All that changes when he meets UN volunteer Alexis Garcia. These two are complete opposites. She can't stand a egotistical, womanizing man. So, you can imagine her first impression of Gabe when he refers to her as "babe" when he meets her. But, the two can't deny the smoldering chemistry running below the surface as they get to know one another. However, there are TWO BIG problems keeping them from devouring one another. Gabe can't because it's against regulations. She can't because she has a boyfriend waiting for her back in Texas. So, they agree to be friends since he is assigned to be her personal escort and guard. As the two embark on a journey to deliver goods to Afghani civilians, they come under attack. Will they survive, and if they do, will they finally throw caution to the wind and give into their overwhelming desire for one another?

While Camouflaged was a HOT, HOT romance, it was also a story about war. The author did a great job of describing just a bit of what soldiers go through in war. She also touched on the shock that people experience when they go through something traumatic. It gave me a moment to pause and be thankful for the sacrifices our men and women make for our personal freedom and protection.

I hope we are going to read more about Gabe and Alexis. Their story isn't quite finished yet. I am anticipating seeing what their future holds. If you haven't read this book, give it a try. When you're done, read Hidden which is about Gabe's friend, Nick. You do get to see a bit of Gabe in this one too. Thanks again, Selena, for another great read!!!!

I received a copy of this book (along with the other books in this series so far) from the author in exchange for honest reviews.

This is technically the first book in the author's Hidden series but I am not sure if it was written first or not. Either way, this book is the story of Gabe and Alexis and their time together in Afghanistan. And what a story it is!

Gabe is a deceptively simple, young, man-whore who is in Afghanistan on his second tour of duty. He and his best friend Nick had signed up together but something bad - and we never learn what in this book - happened involving Nick and he was discharged "six months, two weeks and four days" ago. This story begins the day Alexis, a fresh-faced, naive, college freshman arrives at their base camp as part of an United Nations aid work program. The moment these two meet, sparks fly. There is an instant connection between these two and neither of them like it. In fact, neither of them like each other when they first meet and both attempt to put the other off with attitude. This works for a while until the two of them are put in a situation where they must depend on each other for their very lives. When that happens defenses are dropped, hearts and souls are revealed and both are changed forever.

This book is a must read! Chronologically, it takes place before Hidden, Nick and Lyndsey's book, so it can be read first. It MUST be read before Concealed, the rest of the story of Gabe and Alexis, or you really will not understand the source and the truth of the conflicts and difficulties that lie between them.

Whether you read this first or in between Hidden and Concealed, Camouflaged is a MUST READ. Heck the whole series is a MUST READ as far as I am concerned. Book #3, Buried, is out in April 2014 so you have time to really savour them.

“We don’t have a future, Natalya. I’m not going to marry you and take you back to the States, so either sex is okay or it’s not. Your choice.”

6% into Camouflaged I had to say to myself, “Well, hot da*n!” This guy Gabe sure does not bite his tongue. I had to applaud his honesty, but boy
I felt sorry for Natalya who was living in subpar conditions and really thought that this American soldier would take her away from her native land, Afghanistan.

Enter Alexis. She is a young woman that works with the United Nations. She is head strong and quite a match for Gabe. She doesn’t fall for all of his cheesy pick-up lines but the chemistry between them is undeniable.

“Secondly, I’m a soldier. We get ourselves killed to save other people every single day. It’s my job. I’ve been putting myself at risk to protect your for three years now. You just weren’t around to see it.”

On a personal level, this line written by Selena Laurence really struck a chord with me. Maybe, it’s because I am an Army wife but sometimes we (including myself) forget about the daily sacrifices our military personnel make in the quest for our safety and security. Sidebar over and back to the book! By the title being Camouflaged it is obvious that this book is about the military but the real camouflage is what we as human beings do to conceal who we truly are. We are all trying to hide something and/or are too afraid to reveal our true selves but if we are lucky enough along this ride that is called life, we will find someone that will see through it all. Do yourself a favor and take a few hours to read about Gabe and Alexis and see what’s underneath their camouflage!!!

MY RATING: 4.5

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of Camouflaged in exchange for an honest review.

I’m not a huge fan of romance novels… at least not the old school version where the same old story is rehashed over and over again. BORING! That being said, I am a total sucker for a good love story with a fresh perspective and dare I say lots of sex! If you are romance novelist that is looking to draw in a reader like me the perfect combination is a modern storyline. If you are looking to sweeten the pot, highlight a member of our armed forces in Afghanistan. Yeah, I’m one of those… I LOVE a hot guy in uniform! I find them completely “enlightening” and they definitely make me feel all kinds of patriotic ;) For me, Camouflaged (Hiding From Love Novella #0.5) by Selena Laurence was right on the mark and was absolutely amazing! OOH-RAH!

I absolutely loved Alexis and Gabe. Gabe is a cocky bad boy, something all women love no matter how much they deny it; however, there is always more to people than what meets the eye if you just scratch below the surface. Alexis is a strong female with intelligence and drive. I love her wit, humor, and zest for life. I know that Camouflaged is a novella but I would love it if Selena wrote a full length novel so we can see what happens next…. I am enamored!

What happens when two people with very different world views find themselves in a warzone with the threat of danger at every turn? What will happen when Alexis and Gabe find themselves in a situation where the only people they can depend on are each other?

Camouflaged by Selena Laurence is a military novella. The whole story takes place in Afghanistan. There are at an undisclosed military camp. Gabe enlisted because his friend Nick enlisted. Now Nick's out and Gabe is still in. Gabe meets Alexis, a UN volunteer from University of Texas, Austen Texas with a UN sanctioned group bringing supplies for native Afghanis. They meet over a harrowing circumstance. They are attracted to each other but Alexis fights it making Gabe want her all the more. When he is assigned to accompany her everywhere, they call a truce. Gabe can't get Alexis out of his mind. He has never felt this way before. He tells Alexis things he's never told anyone else or admitted to himself. When they are ambushed by Taliban fighters, he does everything to protect Alexis. Will his new feelings leave room for Alexis to reciprocate? How can they evade the enemy? Can they make it back to camp before starving or being seriously dehydrated? Discover for yourself in this intoxicating read.

Review Copy from the Author

This is the second book I’ve read by this author. It’s her third published novel. Besides I should read her first opus, a contemporary whose synopsis I like.

Once again we are here in her NA universe and we meet again Gabe Harrison, a secondary character seen in Hidden. The series is named Hidden from love, and while this story has just been published, Camouflaged is its first volume.

It’s a short story of a hundred pages or so. The writing is really flowing, so we read it quickly. What’s more, we can say that Selena knows how to attract the reader’s attention with interesting characters and some action.

The story takes place in Afghanistan. Gabe is an American soldier and Alexis is a volunteer member of the United Nations. Gabe and Alexis’ story is set in two parts: the first one is in Camouflaged and the second will be published next year, where they meet again in the USA.

Indeed, and here I’m not spoiling, our heroes will be separated in this end of this story because the hero hasn’t yet completed his mission. However the reader knows when closing the book that they have deep feelings for each other. We are dying to know how their reunion in the real life will turn out.

Gabe is the one who needs to evolve; of an impulsive nature, he doesn’t really think about the repercussions of his actions when he acts. And even if his conscience worries him a bit, his behavior or his decisions don’t change. Some people could be shocked when reading the beginning. But I won’t reveal anything more here.

Gabe doesn’t trouble himself with scruples, acting nearly egoistically. Fortunately Alexis puts him in his place and the reader can be present at the young man’s evolution during the novel. The sex scenes are well present and described.

The story takes place in Afghanistan and even if it’s a period in the moods of the time, the context is difficult and we can’t be mistaken about the place, considering the present descriptions and situations. The author doesn’t go on and on about the population’s misery and difficulties, which I appreciate. As a matter of fact, even though I’m conscious of what these people go through, I don’t necessarily need to have their everyday like described to me.

The story is a little less touching than in Hidden since Selena concentrates more on the action, nevertheless I shed a little tear when our heroes say goodbye and promise to meet again six months later, at the end of Gabe’s contract.

And when I closed the book, I was eager to read the following one. I really liked that there is only the hero’s point of view and I realized I didn’t need to know the heroine’s thought at all at this stage. A really, really good point for the author.

The book was really good but it's frustrating to know that Alexis and Gabe's story isn't finished yet.

Sgt Gabe Thompson is in Afghanistan on his second tour. When his next mission is to escort UN representatives he doesn't expect his heart to react the way it does to Alexis Garcia, the feisty volunteer.

Alexis Garcia is a good girl who has left a boyfriend and her family at home while she completes a goal of hers with the UN. She hates that Gabe flirts with her and doesn't respect the fact that she has a boyfriend back home that she is devoted to.

Yet when an event puts their lives in danger will Gabe and Alexis be able to work together to escape the dangers around them? When it is clear that they both have feelings for the other will that get in the way or will it push Gabe to limits he has never known to protect Alexis?

I really enjoyed this book and the tension between Gabe and Alexis. It was clear that Alexis was a good girl who to a certain degree was lost within herself. She had certain goals but was afraid to deviate from that. Gabe was able to get get under her skin and shake the beliefs that Alexis held.

Gabe was such a good guy in how far he was willing to go to protect Alexis. Yes it was his job but at the same time it still shows the level of dedication that he had and it takes a certain person to put their own life on the line to protect others.

I can't wait to read the next book in the series to see where everything goes as this one ends in a bit of a cliff-hanger!!

God bless Amazon. I love finding gems like Camouflaged for free download while browsing. It's only a novella, but there is a sequel so I have hope.

In comparison to a lot of the new adult I've been reading lately, Camouflaged has real depth. The novella is set in war-torn Afghanistan and the U.S. military base(s?) there. Gabe is an American soldier serving his second tour. Alexis is a UN volunteer there to distribute supplies to the poor Afghan citizens. From the first moment they meet, Alexis and Gabe have instant chemistry. Really powerful, obvious chemistry. Of course, Alexis has a boyfriend back home, and strict orders not to get involved with her from Gabe's CO prevent anything initially. This is all from Gabe's POV, which is a fresh breath of air. He was a pretty decent guy (a womanizer, of course, but it's pretty standard in new adult novels. It actually might be a requirement.), and I really liked him and Alexis together. There was just enough time for the relationship to build and then explode with the help of a traumatic experience (not giving away any details!). I'm dying to see what is next for them! Camouflaged was intense, fun, and the perfect way to pass a hour.

Sergeant Gabe Thompson enlisted with his best friend Nick Carlisle and on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan. Gabe isn't counting the days, weeks, hours, or seconds for no reason right. Gabe is known as player and charmer when it comes to woman. Gabe doesn't have Nick to back his play any more since he returned State side. UN Human Rights inspectors enter the camp two days later, Gabe is assigned Alexis Garcia as escort. Gabe is warned by his CO not to screw up or around his charge. Alexis is off limits in more ways than one. She's got a boyfriend and not interested in Gabe period. Yet why does her heart skip a beat when he's near? While doing routine work for UN, they are ambushed. Will Gabe and Alexis survive? Will Alexis admit her attraction? Will Gabe change his playing ways? Your answers await you in Camouflaged.

Camouflaged is perfect name for this novella. Gabe is player bad boy you love to hate with good looks to match. Alexis is the good girl that steers clear of bad boys and players alike which is what makes Gabe so irresistible. Alexis always does whatever she's told no questions asked but learns that maybe there is more to life than just agreeing all the time. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.

Once again, I’ve had the pleasure of receiving an ARC of a Selena Laurence gem. Camouflaged is the prequel to Selena’s book, Hidden. I loved Gabe in Hidden so I’ve been curious about his back story. My curiosity has been quenched, but now I have a new problem.
I need Gabe to have his happy ending! What he goes through in his life is not a clichéd tragic childhood. But it’s not a sitcom with the perfect upbringing either. And it’s sad when a strong man is so held back by actions of the past that he can’t live in the now. Gabe is a good man and just can’t believe that about himself. Even his actions in Camouflaged were brushed off by him. Well, until it was too late.
And Alexis. I liked Alexis, but what happened between then and now? Where was she in Hidden? And what about poor Gabe? I want to hug him. Or molest him. Okay, both. I need the rest of the story! Selena Laurence better be hard at work or I may throw a fit! I need more of her writing. It’s very relatable and feels very real. The dialogue has a natural flow and there’s nothing too over the top. Selena Laurence writes great stories that are immensely enjoyable to read.

This was a free novella I picked up on Amazon. At 124 pages, it has a full story arc, but it ends on a CLIFFHANGER!!!! Which, of course, made me go purchase the whole series in a box set because I just had to read it all!

I wasn't too sure about Gabe at first because he was such an asshole. But he showed some great character growth throughout the story, and by the end I started to wonder if he really could change for the better. Alexis was young and naïve, and Gabe was NOT what she needed. I also worried that she wouldn't be able to handle the difficult situation that they found themselves in, but she proved me wrong.

While the story is really interesting, I still found parts to be unbelievable. Maybe that's just me and I should probably enjoy the story for what it is. Overall, I did enjoy reading this novella. But now that I am writing this review, I realize that some of my reasons for liking this novella stem from reading book 2 in this series, which is all about Gabe and Alexis. So if you read this novella, then you absolutely have to read book 2 for the real story of Gabe and Alexis.

I was sucked into this story from the first page! Gabe is in the US Army and doesn't seem to do relationships! He is a more of a casual sex and then leave kind of guy. Alexis is in Afghanistan with the UN on a humanitarian mission~ and she winds up with Gabe as her escort around the war torn towns. One day while on a trip into town, they get ambushed..... During that time, they are together for 3 days with little food, water and shelter~ in spending time with each other the feelings that they obviously had for each other come to the surface!

However, there are a few things at play that could ruin their chances of being together......Alexis has a long term boyfriend back home in Texas and she is only going to be in Afghanistan for a few short weeks. Can their feelings for each other stay true or when Alexis leaves will she be walking out of Gabe's life for good??

I cannot wait for the conclusion to Gabe and Alexis' story! Loved seeing how they started out not really liking the other to becoming so close. I hope that Alexis can stay true to Gabe when she goes home to Texas!
