Monday morning doesn’t start well for Ron Ketchum, chief of police of the Sierra Nevada resort town of Goldstrike, California. His deputy chief leaves town looking for a new job. A “dirty” bomb — C4 plastic explosive attached to a container of radioactive material — is found on Lake Adeline, the town’s crown jewel. Hale Tibbot, a rich, divisive real estate developer, is murdered and drained of half his blood.
Even for a cop with twenty years LAPD experience, that’s a handful. Ron reaches out to his old partner, Keely Powell for help. Then the feds arrive. First, it’s Special Agent John Tall Wolf of the BIA, Bureau of Indian Affairs. Next, to stir the pot further, the FBI sends in Special Agent Abra Benjamin, who tells Ron her goal is to “eat Tall Wolf’s lunch.”
Tracking down a terrorist, finding a killer and keeping everyone’s lines of responsibility straight would be challenge enough for any cop, but Ron has other worries, too. While sorting out the list of possible suspects for Tibbot’s murder, the chief realizes he has to include Goldstrike’s mayor and movie icon, Clay Steadman, and his own father, Walter Ketchum.
Joseph Flynn has been published both traditionally — Signet Books, Bantam Books and Variance Publishing — and through his own imprint, Stray Dog Press, Inc. Both major media reviews and reader reviews have praised his work. Booklist said, “Flynn is an excellent storyteller.” The Chicago Tribune said, “Flynn [is] a master of high-octane plotting.” The most repeated reader comment is: Write faster, we want more.
Having recently completed the Jim McGill series to date, I wanted more from Joseph Flynn. This series has all the elements for a great police procedural, with strong characters and a plot that keeps the reader in the middle of the action. Flynn delivers another great novel in the Ron Ketchum series, which introduces many new and exciting people who will appear in other of Flynn’s work. When Chief of Police Ron Ketchum is working shorthanded, he could not have expected to have such a set of cases fall into his lap. A dirty bomb is almost detonated on the local lake, sending federal agents to assist. They soon discover a rich socialite around town has been found dead, under some odd circumstances. Chief Ketchum finds himself in the middle of yet another collection of violent acts that shock the bucolic California community. Flynn delves deeply and keeps the reader engaged until the final pages.
Mondays usually were not this troublesome for Ron Ketchum. Chief of Police to the small resort town of Goldstrike, California, Ketchum will have to handle things shorthanded, after his deputy chief departs to look for a new job. An urgent call has Chief Ketchum discover a ‘dirty bomb’ on Lake Adeline. The C4 explosive connected to a radioactive canister would surely have done significant damage to the California community, had it not been caught in time. This is yet another oddity that befell the chief that fine morning. With the discovery of real estate magnate, Hale Tibbot, the town is abuzz with activity, none of it great for a police force.
All of Ketchum’s experience with the LAPD does not prepare him for this intensity. Ketchum thinks outside the box and invites his former LAPD partner, Keely Powell, to come help him for a time. The dirty bomb attracts the interest of the feds, sending. Special Agent John Tall Wolf of the BIA—Bureau of Indian Affairs—which baffles Chief Ketchum to no end. If that were not enough Special Agent Abra Benjamin makes her presence known from the FBI, vowing that she will solve the case and leave Tall Wolf in her dust. A little competition never hurt anyone.
As Tall Wolf feels that there is an eco-terrorist in their midst, he begins his work analysing the explosive device, which adds a little concern to all involved. The murder of Hale Tibbot is oddly unique, with but a pinprick in his neck and no blood at the scene. Working all the angles he can with his ragtag group of helpers, Chief Ketchum must allay the fears of the town and keep the mayor at bay, all while trying to keep his composure. With a sordid past of his own, Chief Ketchum is forced to come to terms with a number of things as he discovers there is one more piece about which he needs to worry, one he cold not have predicted. Many crimes, numerous suspects, and a a town that is anything but typical in its running, this will be a busy week for everyone. Flynn does a wonderful job once more with this piece, that had me hooked from the outset.
After a long reading journey through Joseph Flynn’s stellar Jim McGill political thriller series, this was a great change of pace (and topic). Premised on the same great storytelling, Flynn takes readers through a strong police procedural series with elements of greatness wherever one turns. A strong narrative base helps propel the story forward and keeps the reader on the edge of their seats. The story gains momentum as Flynn adds great characters, some of whom I have seen before in the McGill series, but this helps differentiate them from their political positions. The introduction of John Tall Wolf, a stellar character here, will help position him to be even better when I tackle the series where he is the protagonist. Off-handed and full of surprises, the tale would not have been the same without Tall Wolf’s flavouring. This also helps complement Ron Ketchum and his development, which is key to this short series.
As with previous novels, Flynn grounds the story with solid plot points, shaping things for all to see. While the mystery element was surely on offer, I felt that the numerous characters and their personalities proved to be the greatest twists. Perhaps, as I have read the entire Jim McGill series to date, I felt it more, but the surprises and twists in the story were helped along by o many faces that I have come to know in my longer reading experience with Joseph Flynn. I could not get enough of them and am eager to see if they will return in the last novel to date in this series as well. Mixing small town policing with large city issues helps push the story along and keep the surprises plentiful. Some of the sub-plots that did not impact the story as much were also refreshing, which only goes to help shape the person that Ron Ketchum is and how he will handle them in the upcoming story. I am ready for most anything and Ron Ketchum has me eager to keep reading. Flynn did a stellar job once more and I cannot get enough of his writing.
Kudos, Mr. Flynn, for wonderful story development across the board.
Not as strong as the first Ketchum novel (Nailed), but still well done. It also has the extra detail of introducing what may be Flynn's most unusual character, John Tall Wolf. He's spun off into two adventures of his own, but gets a good introduction here.
Environmental havoc is the theme of this one, and a few new characters enter the story. Still well written, and the people are real with real impulses and feelings.
The second in the series, good, but not as good as the first. There were a few things that bothered me, but I won't go into them since it would ruin the story for those that have not read it. I will say Walt's death was not premature I think. There is so much more you could do with that character. This author seems to like to get rid of characters, I'm hoping that isn't going to be a pattern.
As I mentioned in my review of Nailed, I would have this book loaded on my eReader before the review was posted. It was. I did, however, have to wait a short while before I could read it. I knew once I started, I would not want to set it down. My suggestion? Make a pot of coffee and set yourself down early in the morning. I leave it to you how to handle kids and spouse. Perhaps you would be better off checking into a hotel with room service? For a much-needed break? Yes. There you go.
Indeed, John Tall Wolf returned, and helped solve the mystery of the death of a rich and not overly loved developer in Goldstrike, and the dirty bomb set to detonate and ruin the pristine lake for years and years.
I don’t know that you need to read Nailed first, but, if possible, I suggest you do as it sets the tone, introduces the main characters, etc. Great story, marvelous read. Perfect escape. Oh, and I read somewhere that this is where John Tall Wolf was introduced. THAT explains why I missed someone. I’d already read the series!
The 2and book in the Ketchum series was better than the first. The author uses the history of The Gold Rush Era of the 1840 s. The town Goldstrike was created in the mid 1840 s when a Family from the midwest decided not to go to San Francisco but settle in this area between California and Nevada. The author continues the theme of searching for Gold in today's world. A man whose family was one of the orginal settlers in the town has found an amazing gold mine. The only problem with this is that a Billionaire real estate developer is about to buy the land and turn it into a casino. The author understands human nature, especially when greed is involved and the things people are capable of doing to get rich.
I had mixed emotions about Nailed, the first book in the series. No worries about Defiled. I really enjoyed this book. The characters continued to develop nicely. The plot was good. The only negative is that I figured out one of the villains early on. And if that’s my only complaint, the book had to be good. Recommended strongly.
This is a great read with many twists and turns. The bad guts usually get a just reward......by Police doing their sworn duty, or by other bad meaning folks. a police officer died, by heart attack, sadly. Ron might become Mayor soon? And he has a new girlfriend from his past. Sounds like she is a keeper!
Ryan's books are all fast paced and current. Every one I read is my favorite until the next one. I recommend this and his others to those who enjoy a well-crafted, cop, thriller.
I loved this one! Some from John Tall Wolf series made it into a great story! I was really hoping for more books in this series but at least there is one more!
Review: Defiled: The Sequel to Nailed Featuring John Tall Wolf (A Ron Ketchum Mystery #2) by Joseph Flynn

Some of my favorite characters all in one book!
What I liked: If you look around on my blog, you'll see I really enjoy suspense and thriller novels. I tried the first book in this series, Nailed, just because I was familiar with Mr. Flynn's other works. I'm not normally a huge mystery fan.
This series just isn't about the mystery though and that's what drew me into continuing the series. I enjoy the characters and the setting of Defiled as much as the plot. I think Nailed was an introduction to the characters and I'm not sure if Mr. Flynn initially intended it as a series because it seems a fair amount of time has passed since the ending of Nailed. Or, it could be he has two other series going and just didn't have the time to add to this one.
Chief of Police Ron Ketchum has his hands full with not only an act of terrorism but a murder at the same time. In addition, his father is living in Mayor Steadman's house while collaborating on a film of his life. Ron's father, Walter, was portrayed in Nailed as longstanding bigot and since a horrible incident, has lost touch with his son. Now, though, Walter is somewhat reformed and ready to establish closer contact with Ron.
Mayor Clay Steadman (Mayor for Life) is also an "A" list Hollywood leading man. He is ridiculously wealthy and isn't afraid to use his money to help his town, Goldstrike, or any of its citizens. He's honest with the residents, keeps them up to date on what's happening within their community, and what he has planned for the future of their little (but growing) town. (Note: To get the full background on Goldstrike and its early inhabitants, I recommend you start with the first book, Nailed)
There is a lot of action going on in Defiled with two investigations running so close together and maybe intertwined. The terrorism plot brings in two characters from the Jim McGill Series and John Tall Wolf Series. Yep, John Tall Wolf is dipping his hand into the reasoning behind the averted terrorism try and FBI Special Agent Abra Benjamin drops in to help out or maybe just to take some credit. Head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Marlene Flower Moon, also shows up and you can never tell what her agenda is.
What I didn't like: There was so much going on in Defiled, I was almost shell shocked. Can a book have too much action/plots that they step all over each other? It was close but Mr. Flynn drew it in and finished with some surprises!
I ran the gamut of emotions with Defiled. Happy, sad, disturbed and a bit in awe of how Mr. Flynn wove everything together and yet was able to throw in some big twists at the end!!
OMG! LOVE THE "RON KETCHUM MYSTERY" SERIES, THE FIRST ONE (NAILED) WAS WOW, CAN HE DO IT AGAIN? YES-SIREEEE! HE SURE CAN AND DID! STRANGE HOW SOME AUTHOR'S CAN TELL A STORY BETTER THAN SOME OTHERS, MR. FLYNN IS A "MASTER-OF-THE-GAME STORY TELLER". READING HIM I VISUALLY SEE HIS WORDS IN A FULL COLOR PANORAMIC MOVIE. THE TOWN OF GOLDSTRIKE AND THE PEOPLE LIVING THERE SEEMS LIKE I KNOW THEM PERSONALLY. THIS BK#2 DEALS WITH SO MANY TIMELY ISSUES, SUCH AS THE LACK OF COOPERATION BETWEEN LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES. MAKES ME WONDER HOW ANY CRIMES INVOLVING LOCAL POLICE AND FBI EVER GET SOLVED, DUE TO THE PISSING CONTEST GOING ON WHILE INVESTIGATING, INSTEAD OF WORKING TOGETHER ON A CASE. I WAS SAD (needed a tissue or two)AND HAPPY (Oliver's decision) READING ABOUT HOW THE CHARACTERS FROM BK#1 HAD PROGRESSED IN THE LAST (3)YEARS SINCE LAST SEEING THEM. I LOVE SOME OF THE NEW CHARACTERS ESPECIALLY "JOHN TALL WOLF" (one yummy dude!). I GAVE BK#1 95* MORE STARS I THINK I'LL GIVE BK#2 95* MORE ALSO. LOVED IT! ;D
After having read Nailed and enjoying the characters in the Ron Ketchum series, I was pleasantly surprised with this second installment. I usually do not like to read series, but when the characters are this good, it's hard not to see how everyone ends up. Although there weren't any mountain lions scaring us in this book, and I must admit, I sort of missed having the four-legged creature around, we find a sinister two-legged variety going around trying to blow up Goldstrike and defiling Lake Adeline.
But of course, with the help of John Tall Wolf, the reader is taken on a bit of a roller coaster ride of several little stories that eventually wrap up into one. This is another strong storyline that keeps the reader engaged up to the last page. Outstanding and exciting read.
I really enjoyed the John Tall Wolf novels and originally read this book because Tall Wolf also appeared in this book along with several other characters from the series. I was pleasantly surprised to find the Ron Ketchum books are also well written and nearly as interesting as the Tall Wolf books. Highly recommended.
2 heroes from different story lines meet. complicated tale of environmental terrorism, long lost gold, a dirty bomb and a bizarre murder brings John Tall Wolfe to Ketchum's town. lots of action, a little tragedy.
Once again the cast of characters are varied and have unique personalities. You can actually put this book down for a few days, come back and the story line is still intact.
This was another fun, quick-moving novel in the series. This was hard to put down and had a great cast of characters that I look forward to reading more about in future novels. I will definitely read the next one in this series!
Enjoyed the introduction of the John Tall Wolf. His humor added much to the storyline. It was also fun to have agent Benjamin show up. I could have done without Ron's former partner. She did not really add much to the story for me.
This author is one of the best with words, plots and characters. Dynamic personalities, and yet humble tendencies. Story line was clever, full of twists and turns.
