ADVISORY FROM THE AUTHOR: This book contains sexually explicit scenes. You will not like this book if you don't like that. Trust me. When Arthur Kellington was fifteen, a Romany fortune teller predicted that his true love would be killed. Since then, he's resolved to never fall in love. He has no trouble keeping his resolution until he meets Vanessa Gans, an agent with the Home Office who is on the trail of two hardened criminals. As he finds himself falling for her, he must keep his distance emotionally as the only way to protect them both.
Despite her illegitimate birth, Vanessa Gans has worked her way up to being one of the Crown's finest agents. She's reluctant to accept Arthur's help initially because she doesn't want to place him in danger. Then she realizes her heart is truly at risk because there can be no honorable future between them.
NEVER WAGER AGAINST LOVE is a romantic tale of bravery, sacrifice and love. It contains explicit language. The earlier books in the series were NEVER MISS A CHANCE (Book 2) and NEVER A MISTRESS, NO LONGER A MAID (Book 1).

This is the third book in Maureen Driscoll's Kellington series. I was hooked with book one, and this series just gets better and better.
Never Wager Against Love was a truly pleasurable read. Maureen Driscoll’s writing and storytelling grabs hold of the reader from the first page and doesn’t let go till the last page. The characters have a lot of depth and are well thought out. I also LOVE the fact that all of the characters from the prior books are brought back throughout the series. The storyline was excellent with lots of action, as Vanessa and Arthur go on a quest to find and retrieve priceless artifacts before the villains can get to them first.
Vanessa’s character was highly unusual and unique. She was an agent of the Home Office, was unheard during the time period that the book is set in. She was extremely intelligent, and it was quite often an asset as Arthur and her journeyed from place to place to locate the priceless artifacts.
I adored Arthur. He was so protective of Vanessa and I loved reading his thoughts and feelings in relation to Vanessa, how they changed and grew MORE as the story unfolded.
It was easy to feel the attraction and chemistry between Vanessa and Arthur. The sensuality in this book is VERY HIGH and when they finally joined together it was EXPLOSIVE! This book is no way erotic, but for those of you who enjoy some steam in your reads you will be very happy with the overall heat factor.
The book ended on a high note with an excellent epilogue, complete with a happily ever after. It left me satisfied, but still wanting more! Fortunately, there are two more books in the series about the remaining yummy Kellington brothers and I can dive right into.
If you are a fan of sensual provocative historical romances, where there is an underlying family theme, then I can’t recommend this book and series enough. You will not be disappointed.
*My thanks to Maureen Driscoll for her generosity in gifting me this series to read in exchange for an honest review*
This is a really cute and entertaining story IF you can overlook the fact that it is completely unbelievable and unrealistic for the time period. I'm not a huge fan of historical romance so it was only slightly annoying rather than completely ruining the book for me. The heroine was an agent for the Home Office, and while they probably did use women as agents, I'm sure it would be more as a spy under the cover of a maid or governess, or even a singer or actress. It's completely unrealistic to put her in the role of investigator. She wouldn't have been acknowledged in that position and the only reason the story worked at all is because Arther was with her. She didn't plan for him to come alng though, so I don't quite know how she planned to complete her mission. So yes, in order to enjoy this book, you have to ignore reality. As a fan of paranormal romance, that wasn't hard for me to do. Other than that, it was a bit predictable with who the villain turned out to be, although there was a twist when the heroine's past with the criminal came out. One of the things I like about this series is the siblings interactions and we didn't get to see them until almost the end, so that was a bit of a disappointment as well. But over all, it wasn't really good or bad, just okay and a decent read.
Never Wager Against Love is the third book in the Kellington series. Prologue: 1810. Chapter One: 1822. This was a slow-moving spy historical romance story, only entertaining to me when the Kellington family gets together.
We meet the Kellington family whose parents named them after four kings and one queen of England. William Kellington, the Duke of Lynwood, is every inch the powerful aristocrat. Dedicated to his three brothers and only sister - Edward, Arthur, Henry, and Elizabeth - Lynwood has been the head of the family since the death of their parents from sudden fever more than a decade earlier in 1809. At nineteen, William took on ducal responsibilities and the care of his younger siblings.
Never a Mistress, No Longer a Maid: 4- stars (Edward known as Ned) Never Miss a Chance: 3- stars (Elizabeth known as Lizzie) Never Wager Against Love: 3 stars (Arthur)
Lord Arthur Kellington was fifteen when a Romany fortune teller predicted that his true love would be killed. Since then, he has resolved to never fall in love. I really dislike prologues that deliver these romance-blocking premonitions to Heroes and Heroines. It just dampens the story from the get-go. I think it’s a lazy way to introduce an obstacle to love, and unimaginative. Arthur was one of the Ton’s most eligible bachelors. With a reputation as a gamester, he rarely played deep and always paid his debts on time. The worst that could be said about him was that he drifted through life.
Vanessa Gans is an agent with the Home Office. Recruited at the age of twenty, she’d spent the last four years hiding in plain sight by posing as maids, shop girls, and seamstresses. Vanessa is illegitimate born. For a Heroine in a historical romance, this characterisation of spy work is highly unusual and, at times, unbelievable.
There are typos in this book like the previous two in this series. Two typos within three pages of chapter ten starting. Disappointing.
The best part of this series is the interactions with the extended family as each sibling marries and the family grows. I recommend this story for an average read.
Well it is Arthur's turn to be in the spotlight! Why is it that nobody takes Arthur seriously? Could it be that he enjoys gambling or is one of the notorious rakes of the Ton?
World wise Vanessa Gans is one of those who won't take him seriously. But part of that could be that she is not only not part of the elite Ton, ok who are we kidding she isn't part of the ton unless her job as a spy requires it.
Vanessa and Arthur are thrown together at a house party where Vanessa is on the trail of two villians and trying to find a burried chest containg clues (Read Never Miss A Chance for more info on the party). As Vanessa races off to get the stolen chest back Arthur is determined to follow after her and keep her safe, and his favorite horse that she stole (or Borrowed on a long term basis).
As Arthur and Vanessa search for priceless artifacts in many not nice places, Arthur starts to fall in love. Vanessa tries not to as she knows that the two classes in which they belong do not mix. Who would be the outcast? Her or him?
But there is an element that Arthur keeps to himself. As a young boy he was told by a fortune teller that the woman he loved would be killed. Knowing this Arthur strugles to keep his emotions under control but when that doesn't work he fights even harder to stay by Vanessa's side and keep her safe. But wait a minute that is exactly what Vanessa is trying to prevent. And she is a spy. She can take care of herself.
This story was much more of a "bodice ripper" than the other two. Very well written with the old characters we love, an introduction to possible new ones and proof that love conquers all.
I didn't care for this one. The story dragged and I found myself skimming. The story also was a bit over the top with the whole gypsy fortune telling bit, and the plot was just too far fetched. Spy stories do not seem to be this author's forte.
The characters were flat especially the h. We don't even know much of her backround until about 70% and even when we do learn of it, I found myself not caring. The H was an arrogant rake and I hated him for most of the book. I did however grow to like him by the very end, but to be honest I couldn't care less if he ended up the the h at all and I found myself getting angry with th h at caving to him.
I found the logic of the H's "I can't fall in love with the h because if I do the fortune tellers prediction will come true" weak. Why follow her to protect her then? If you avoid her completely then she wont get shot like the gypsy predicted.
This author also seems to have a cookie cutter style in love making scenes. Evry woman she writes about wether they be virgin or not has no clue about felicio. And they always seem to state "This is not right!" LOL please. I am so sick of these highly skilled men and these ignorant woman when it comes to the bedroom.
Overall it was an ok read, just ok. Since most of these are stand alones, skip this one.
I was anxious to start this book about Arthur Kellington. It is the third book in the Kellington Series and when the 2nd left off, he and the woman we knew to be his lady love, were chasing after a pair of notorious thieves!
Vanessa Gans (aka Tara Rennard), agent of the Home Office, normally posed as a shop girl or maid to gain information on various cases. This case was a bit different. She was to pose as a Lady and join a house party, then retrieve a special box that was rumored to be on the property. She found it! Then it was stolen by two lethal thieves. Lord Arthur wanted to help, but it would be better for both of them if he stayed away from Vanessa. She couldn’t guarantee his safety and separated, her heart would remain intact; she stole his horse and took off after them. All was going well until the stubborn thing decided to stop and stare at a squirrel in a tree while the villains got away… stupid horse!
It took me forever to finish this book but more so because of my time then the content. I love the Kellington family. They are a strong, compassionate and diverse group of characters.
Maureen has just hit it out the park with this series. I teared up toward the end when everything came to blow. I thought Ms. Gans managed to be a strong independent woman but at the same time she wasn't heartless. I love how Arthur knew from the start that she was for him. Maureen even managed to throw in some unexpected twist here and there.
Start at book one - not because you have to but because you will enjoy it all the more.
No lie - I put down 50 Shades of Grey because it didn't draw me like the Kellington series.
This is the third book in Kellington Family series and this time around it’s Arthur’s happily ever after and I loved the way this story developed. What I found out by reading this author is how much I enjoy the dialogue she writes. It flows, drips and enriches every story I’ve read so far.
As for the characters, they were well written, solid and three dimensional. From the start of the book you were able to connect with them and enjoy their journey as they try to unravel the mystery and come to care for each other.
If you are a fan of this author, then this is a must read for you.
If you’ve never read any of Maureen’s books, this is a good way to sample her writing voice. Enjoy!
Never Wager was a fun read. There was drama, mystery but most importantly, blooming love. It begins with a strong prologue, in the past that sets the stage on Arthur's character. As you continue to read, you find yourself recalling the prologue. This is book three of the Kellington Series, so you get visit all of the other characters- Ned, Jane, cute Vi, naughty but nice Lizze and rocking in his boots Marcus, adorable Hal and the rock of the family,Liam. The mystery and drama that unfolds pulls Arthur to aid Vanessa, yeah right, and he ends up falling for her. Too cute. Fun read, great series and it will leae you begging for BOOK FOUR!!!
Full of adventure and enjoyment, this one was a good addition to the Kellington series. The characters are great, whether they are good or nasty, and the story keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to find out who's behind everything. I felt like the conflict was natural rather than forced, and it never devolves into melodrama. An all around great book, highly recommended.
Noted in my past reviews of this series. I love this one as much as the last one. Vanessa Gans, an agent with the Home Office who is on the trail of two hardened criminals. Is feisty, beautiful, outspoken just like Lady Lizzie the sister of Arthur Kellington. Who has found the agent red headed Vanessa a unique gem and his match. He would follow her anywhere. Arthur no is determined to keep her safe. See he has fallen in love with this strong willed, spy. Which is why he wants to protect her since in his teens he was given a production from a gypsy who stated that his soul, true love would be shot. He will not let that happen to Vanessa not without sacrificing his life. As he finds himself falling for her, he must keep his distance emotionally as the only way to protect them both. Arthur believes he can stop his emotions and pretend that he is not in love with her to break the the predictions he got from Sophia the gypsy a decade ago during his teens. But Vanessa & Arthur are drawn to each other. Love seems to out way pretense. Vanessa is determined not to let this gorgeous, vigorous man to take her focus away of her mission. To catch the criminals and find the the traitor that hides behind the crown in the home office. And capture the objects that her superiors have asked her to retrieve and bring back for crown and country. What will become of Vanessa Gans & her relationship with Lord Arthur and her work for Crown and Country? Read to find out the next journey of the next brother on the Kellington Saga.
Lord Arthur is the third son of a duke. He is a gambler who is wary of falling in love since at age 15 a Romney woman foretold that his love would be shot.
He meets Vanessa who is an agent of the Crown on a mission to stop thieves who are in league with a French spy. She has an illegitimate background and a chequered past.
They team up in a race to find valuable artefacts before they can be stolen. In the process their relationship deepens but Arthur is afraid to fall in love and have the prophecy fulfilled, while Vanessa feels she is unworthy of someone of Arthur's station.
Good story with a few potential baddies to choose from. Not my favourite book in the series though. That's still Rosalind & Liam's book: Never Deny your Heart.
I'm not sure if I like these Kellington novels for the writing or just for the sake of getting acquainted with the Kellington family. This episode involves Arthur and another Kellington meets and falls for a strong character -- three down and two to go. I like the strong women of these stories and do wish that the book covers could vary a bit from book to book instead of always featuring the conquering hero. However, the stories are great, the characters grow and the family relationships are both amusing and tender. I'm totally hooked.
Well written with wonderful characters. The storyline has intrigue.mystery, suspensions romance. Author was living a life with no meaning u til he met Vanessa at a country party and there starts the the story. Vanessa earworm undercover for the crown to retrieve certain objects Arthur working with Vanessa is an enlightening experience for Arthur and gives his life meaning. They solve the masterwork the help of family and get the HEA. Would highly recommend this series and author.
Very good story writting. So impressed with Ms. Driscoll! Her experience show in the very capable flow of the story. Everything connects. I'm enjoying the hints of the next book. Binging the entire series and don't want it to end. Looking forward to more book by this author. So glad I found her. Great story, nice romance, humor, some steamy but not to much! I suggest start reading and don't stop, unless maybe to get another glass of wine! Keep writing wonderful stories with family's we all want to belong to!
Arthur is the brother who seems to have no direction in his life, but he has a depth that many don't see. He falls for Vanessa, a spy for the Crown, at the end of book 2. He goes along with her on the mission that is introduced in book 2 even though she would rather he didn't. There is a mystery to solve on their mission and I solved it fairly early on.
But I liked the book. Arthur is a really great guy and Vanessa, a lady spy with a past, is very likable, too.
The first book in the series was really good. The second book was good but had a few faults. The third book is more annoying. I find both Arthur and Vanessa annoying. I don't find them very believable. Especially Vanessa Ganns. I have read plenty of novels involving agents for the Crown. She doesn't come across at all believable. Not as an agent and not as a person in that particular time period. She doesn't fit. And to top it all off. It is even a little on the boring side.
These characters work well together. The intrigue and mystery were great. I enjoy reading the lifestyles of the 19th century English. I especially enjoy the author use of middle English vocabulary which for es me to look up the meanings thus increasing my knowledge
But, this isn't the best I've read so far. I liked the characters and the plot was ok, but for some reason, the story just didn't snag me, so it took a while to finish it. Ms. Driscoll has a very polished writing style; very literate, the story flows smoothly. There's a great HEA. I do recommend that the series be read in order.
I liked the passion and adventure of this book, but found the premise a little implausible. The quest for items just didn't ring true, but the journey was entertaining and the book well worth reading.
A bit of the quest is in order for Kellington Brother Arthur, and yes there's a sword and a chalice involved. Also involved is the competent agent from the Home Office who is definitely stealing Arthur 's heart. Very good series.
This was a nice, fairly "light" read which I enjoyed. This is the first I've read of the series and there was no problem coming in... in the middle. I never felt "lost" or that I needed to read the previous books before reading this one, which is always a plus. Well done.
Lots of adventures, and excitement, And danger in this story, a gypsy prediction, that come true, a love as wild, and untamed, as the man himself and the lady. No matter the wager, love will find you. Thank you ❤
Beautifully written this story is full of romance, adventure and espionage. Loved the characters especially the kellingtons. Can’t wait to read the dukes story!! Good read overall
Another wonderful Kellington story. Vanessa is an agent to the crown and Lord Arthur a gambler. Can these two work together to solve a puzzle and save some of England’s national treasures without falling in love.
Operatives at work in early 1800 England is the basis of this story. There is betrayal, love and loyalty to keep you guessing. For me, it was not a book that was spellbinding. If I could have rated it a 4 1/2, I would have.
Very entertaining book with villains, spies, and, of course, a treasure chest leading to priceless artifacts. Trying to figure out clues while falling in love made this story one of a kind.
