Didn't love this as much as the first. It was just a little hard to follow in some places, but I'm still interested in where this will go and how they'll break the curse and live happily ever after.
The dialogue was so stilted at the beginning that I looked up scanlations to be sure Tokyopop hadn't started using AI translation to speed up their publication process. But I think it was just choppy pacing to get the story over a few "dull" humps to the more interesting parts of the story.
It worked: we blasted through a couple character introductions and then back into the reunion between Ray and Guang, and the heart of their love story. And it's true that their dynamic is my favorite part.
Still, while I didn't really want to see a ton more of Guang's incredibly creepy younger brother, things got wrapped up pretty fast. Also interesting that the whole rescue operation wasn't even strictly necessary at the end of the day, because it turns out Guang does have a lot more sorcerer powers than the ability to make/restrict rain. For example, he seems to be able to wield Prometheus's fire when he's angry enough - like when he thinks Ray's been killed in front of him.
Now that he's effectively put down the rebellion and the rest of the nobles are falling into line, the true villain emerges: some other supernatural being that's potentially the source of the sorcerers' power and also tied to some kind of confusing curse? I don't get why sorcerers wouldn't be allowed to profess their love, but I guess that's the mystery that's being unveiled in later volumes. Right now it's mostly serving as a way to introduce some more angst, so Guang can't be blissfully happy with Ray.
Loved the scenes where he very much is, though. He'd really thought he was going to have to spend his entire life alone, without realizing the world had produced the other half of his soul, just waiting for them to find each other.
Also loved that Ray gets to tell Guang stories about their shared father - one by birth, one by post-exile adoption - and to assure Guang that he never was alone and had always been loved. I suppose that whole curse deal explains why the sorcerer had exiled his lover to begin with, although it's still sort of a narrative stretch. We'll see how the bigger worldbuilding stuff plays out. I at least like the emotional core.
Aside from the unnecessary incestuous situations between Guang and his power obsessed brother this volume was fine. It wasn't great but this is a MM fantasy series so it is to be expected that the story will be filled with rushed moments and plot inconsistencies. This story obviously has potential but unfortunately Anji Seina was more concerned with writing attempted SA scenes and incest. The villains are pathetic and are easily defended. At least Guang's stepmother's backstory was interesting but I still don't think she deserves to be forgiven easily after all her attempts on Guang's life and her part in Guang's father's death. It's stupid that Guang would let his brother know he was intersex after he was told by his father how dangerous it could be if anyone found out. It's clear that the author made him tell his brother so she could have a excuse for him to be nearly r*ped by two prostitutes and his brother. This scene was unnecessary and irritating. This is the third r word attempt against him. The trope of feminine and androgynous male characters appearance somehow enticing so-called "straight" male characters to assaulting them is ridiculous and just an excuse for the SA scenes to have a "reason" to be in the story. This is a trope I hope that would die out in media but unfortunately it's still around. Ray has become more likable and reasonable and his feelings towards Guang and vice versa can be sweet if I ignore the fact that part of his attraction to Guang is that his appearance reminds him of his father. The writer keeps bringing up that they are basically adopted brothers. That aside I'm curious about Guang's family curse,if he will be able to overcome the curse and start to become more comfortable with his changes. I liked the dialogue that involves Chinese poems.
Although not as strong as the first volume I still really enjoyed this volume. This world continues to fascinate me. These characters are still engaging. The art is gorgeous. The gripes that I had with this volume were minor but still there. I really could’ve done without Yan lusting after his brother Guang it was really gross and in my opinion served absolutely no purpose to the plot. I still think it’s a good thing that this series as a main character that is intersex and that being intersex is described as godlike and beautiful. I continue to be glad I picked this series up.

1. what the hell is wrong with yan 2. the romance is very sweet 3. I feel like rinpo had so much more potential 4. did rinpo and zela have to be cousins...
This exceptional little piece is a blend of intriguing worldbuilding, political conflict, forbidden romance, and sci-fi with gorgeous art. Set in a dystopian, post-meteor impact, the story follows Ray and Guang. Two different souls who join forces against a common enemy.
Overall thoughts World’s End Blue Bird is going strong showing no signs of slowing down. The story has a great hook and goes above and beyond to keep you reading. Sometimes because it’s interesting—others, horrifying. I enjoy that it doesn’t hold back showing us the political conflict because the worldbuilding is interesting! I’m excited to see where this story will take us next!
