A series of short, touching stories from around the town of Stillwater Springs. It Includes the story of how the town hired the female sheriff. I'd wondered about this having previously skipped the novellas for the main books.
The first Christmas story is a short romance of Louisa Cannon and Red Macalister. She teaches knitting to earn money. Red only wants a new pair of stockings but decides to learn to knit so he can spend time with Louisa.
The second story with Abe's memories of his lost children and wife had me crying. In public on a CTA bus. This holiday short is about family and Abe and his daughter talk about their losses, grief, and love. Very lovely.
Sally O'Donell is 19 and has traveled into Montana Sky to trade her handmade scarves for Christmas gifts for her brother, sisters and parents. Harry O'Hanlon is at the general store when Sally arrives and is smitten. This story shows that generosity has its own rewards.
Kayleigh Gentry's family are hard-hearted ogres! They want to eat her goose, Prince for Christmas dinner! K. C. Granger is tracking a criminal. When she gets to the Gentry farm she hears of a runaway child that didn't want her goose cooked for Christmas dinner. K.C. hopes the child doesn't cross paths with the criminal but of course, it's inevitable.
Pepe Sanchez has loved Lucia Perez for a time but he doesn't have the means to support a wife. With the unasked for help of family and friends, he is soon earning money from his carvings and decides he will ask Lucia to marry him.
The final story has Elizabeth Sanders putting on a children's pageant on Christmas Eve for the town.
It's a beautiful collection of short stories that are heartwarming and full of joy.
A Sweet and Heartwarming Collection of Yuletide tales set in Debra's Sweetwater Springs, Montana
MONTANA SKY CHRISTMAS by Debra Holland is a delightful collection of clean and touching short stories set in the small town of Sweetwater Springs, Montana in 1894 at Christmastide. Even though these are short stories, they do not feel short or rushed. The characterizations are strong and compelling with lots of depth. Fans will be thrilled with this anthology, but the assorted stories each work well as stand-alones if you are new to Debra's historicals.
It was a joy to revisit the characters residing in and around Sweetwater Springs during the Christmas season. If you are not feeling the Christmas spirit when you start these stories, you certainly will be! I can see myself listening to these again and again for the warm fuzzies feel they render.
Following please find a very brief description and a favorite quote from some but not all - of the endearing stories in this bundle:
RED STOCKINGS FOR CHRISTMAS
• The heartwarming story of a mix-up that evolved to much more. Louisa Cannon thought that Red Macalister wanted to take knitting classes from her...
"The Christmas I was sixteen, my ma and I were poorer than church mice. My pa died when I was two, taking her heart with him." A smile curved his lips. "She could have remarried for a more comfortable life. But she couldn't bring herself to do it. We were happy, though, her and I. Just when I was getting old enough to do odd jobs, bring in some money to make her life easier, she got sick. I stayed home to nurse her. She had no strength left. But somehow she'd scraped together the last of her red yarn and made me a pair of stockings. My Christmas gift that year." Sensing his thoughts lingered in the past, Louisa brushed a finger over the scrap in her palm. "She died several weeks later." Louise caught her breath, aching for the pain of that young man. "I took a lot of ribbing for wearing red stockings. But I didn't give them up, even when I could afford to. I felt like they kept my ma close. Like she was with me." Tears welled up in Louisa's eyes. One dripped over. He caught the drop on the tip of his finger. "They brought me luck." "That's why you're called Red. I wondered."
GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST
• Reliving Abe's memories of his wife and children who have passed brought tears to my eyes.
Abe picked up a shiny silver star, now a bit tarnished, the symbol of a happier time. The year after their daughter's death came the joy of a a newborn son,. Jeremy just squeaked into life the day before the holiday. The star was Abe's gift to his wife that Christmas. He smiled as he hung it on a branch.
KAYLEIGH'S CHRISTMAS GOOSE
• Kayleigh's story was exciting and treacherous as she strove to save Prince, her cherished pet goose, from her own family's Christmas table.
Who would have thought God would send a bad man and a sheriff just to save Prince?
A SHERIFF FOR CHRISTMAS
• I finally found out how the town of Sweetwater Springs hired a female sheriff! I'd been dying for this story and it does not disappoint!
"I'll get right to the point," Mr. Carter said. "For the last year, we've been searching for a sheriff for our town." He grimaced. "Wouldn't have thought finding one would be so difficult."... "She hasn't said yes," Carter commented. He slanted her an inquiring glance. "Well, K.C. Granger. Will you have us?" At the marriage-vow-sounding question, K.C. felt a smile play around her lips, perhaps the first one since Charles' murder. In keeping with the formality of his question, and because a little imp of humor prompted her, she said, "I do."
FELIZ NAVIDAD
• OMG! Pepe's story will pull at your heartstrings with a huge tug. He loves Lucia, but doesn't have anything to offer her. I've wanted Pepe to have his own HEA since I first met him in Debra's books so this tale was a special treat.
Pepe absently thought, happy beyond words that he was actually holding hands with Lucia. Passing a stall with a particularly pungent odor of manure made Pepe falter, realizing a barn wasn't the most romantic place to propose. Then he remembered the Savior born on this very night so long ago, and he figured if God could choose a stable for such an important miracle, he could too.
A CHRISTMAS PAGEANT
• Marta was in a new unfamiliar land. She had no friends and struggled with our language. Then, a Christmas pageant performs its own miracle.
She allowed herself to relax and enjoy the wave of applause breaking over them. Marta glanced at her mother, who had tears running down her face, but her smile was the happy one Marta hadn't seen in a long time. She no longer looked drawn and sad, but the pretty Mutti her Vati had adored. A hand brushed her head. But when she turned to look, no one stood close to that side of her. But she caught a whiff of a familiar scent, cigars- and-Vati smell, and knew in her heart her father had come to listen to her sing.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention Lara Asmundson's performance of each of the stories. Her voice is pleasant and clear and she skillfully differentiates between the characters. Her inflections are faultless and both her female and male voices sound realistic. I always thoroughly enjoy listening to her professional narrations and this wondrous set of tales is no exception.
As an avowed fan of Debra's books, I found each of these up-close-and-personal tales of the town's characters whom I've grown to think of as dear friends to be captivating and highly entertaining. After I finished each of them, I had the feeling of walking on clouds with a happy heart and a satisfied smile. If you love Debra's Sweetwater Springs tales, these should be a must-read! I highly recommend MONTANA SKY CHRISTMAS to anyone who delights in sweet Christmas stories. These are guaranteed to warm your heart!

I sincerely have loved all the Montana Sky books! What wonderful characters! The story was so enchanting and made me want to read more! I loved getting reassigned with characters from other stories as well. I loved Tim and Marta's singing together. I could hear it in my mind. Thank you for all the stories and entertainment you have given throughout Covid!
Great Filler Stories for Some of the Secondary Characters
This collection of 7 stories fills in details that did not fit into other books. It also has the warm fuzziness of a Christmas read. Time-wise it occurs just after Stormy Montana Skies. Now I will start reading the O'Donnell Sisters stories.
This one its several Christmas love stories and I just loved it. I wish the stories would be longer since I didn't want to put it down, but they were all very sweet just like all the other Montana Sky stories.
Eagerly awaiting Debra Holland's next book, due out in about a week. I'm revisiting her short stories. There is something about Ms. Holland's writing that has me loving this era in history.
So many short stories are too short, I loved this collection! It helped bring together so many questions in the coming books too! I just finished #8 and decided to read this before the next book. Beautifully written!
A truly diverse and well written collection of stories with a lovely holiday theme! The only improvement I can see would be a bit of use of objective case pronouns.
Enjoy the short stories they added on to the town of Sweetwater I already missed the characters wish I knew more about their lives can further of their story
This was a touching group of stories centered around Christmas. It was a quick and enjoyable read, not a ton of substance and a little cheesy but for me that was okay.

I am not a great reader of short stories, but Debra Holland has a great talent, pulling me in quickly and leaving me feeling like I know and love the people in her stories. If you have read any of the Montana Sky stories, you already have a feel for the community and will love these extra glimpses of the area. Warning, if you are new to the series, you will be drawn to learn more about them. I first learned of the town of Sweetwater in the newest anthology, A Sweetwater Springs Christmas, which includes stories by other authors I follow, as well as three by Debra Holland. I am now an excited fan of the people of Sweetwater, Montana and the author who created them. I received this copy of Montana Sky Christmas as an extra surprise when I won a copy of Stormy Montana Sky! Based on the stories in the Sweetwater Springs Anthology, I ordered the other two full length books even before I received Stormy Montana Sky and expect to order every book connected to the series. I am especially dying to learn more about the sheriff!
What a beautifully written collection of old time western books! This collection was perfectly timed with our Christmas season. I loved listening / reading this collection. It is romantic and sweet and very much family oriented (clean read). This collection will make a perfect holiday read for family get-together and I truly believe young and old alike will enjoy listening to it.
The author, Debra Holland has a wonderful manner in writing when it comes to the old west ways. Every book of hers that I have read so far is equally as wonderful and I find I enjoy listening to them much more than I ever thought I would. Ms Holland has a way of capturing my heart in her writing. The narrator, Lara Asmundson did a fantastic job delivering this collection of short stories to us. I love the accents and the multiple voices she uses to entertain us and find the voices totally believable! Well done!
This was a series of Christmas stories within this book. It introduced us to the new Sheriff, and gave us the back story on her. (Yes, HER) That wasn't the only new addition to Sweetwater Springs, there were marriages, a birth and new people added to this great group of characters. I love the way each of these stories came to life. I've read series written by different people and you could tell the plot word for word. The only change was the name of the characters and their location. Debra Holland, has such a great talent! I've only run across half a dozen authors, who'll be so creative when writing a series such as this. Treat yourself to the Sweetwater Springs series as your personal Valentine's day gift. You'll be glad you did!
Debra Holland has done it again! I absolutely loved this series of short stories that can be read alone or as part of her series. I love how the stories all address different things such as the loss of a love one, young love, and the loneliness of being in a new place and how each character overcomes and finds love, happiness, or just the joy of helping others. I love how the stories entwine and flow from one to the next. In every story Debra touches your heart in a different way and just makes you glad you chose to read her stories.
I really liked this book, and the series. Good, clean historical romance. The author does not bog the story down with endless recitations of the characters' thoughts and feelings. She keeps the story moving, and you figure that out for yourself. What a relief!
I liked it so much I read the entire series in a few days - one right after the other. Would love to read more, as I really got attached to all of the characters in the town.
This is a set of sweet stories all occurring at mid winter. Some stories stand alone, others are related. You will learn how the town finally gets a sheriff and how Abe McGuire manages moving in with his daughter and family. You will also meet the O'Donnell family who are also part of A Valentine's Choice. Enjoy anytime of the year. Chicken Soup for the romantic soul.
If you have read the Sweetwater Springs Mail Order Brides Series by Debra Holland you will want to check this Short Story Collection out. It is several stories with a Christmas theme about the secondary characters in her Sweetwater Springs books. They tell of Christmas miracles for all those seeking someone to share this wonderful life we are given. This is a quick read and some will bring tears to your eyes and a smile to your heart if you love happy ever after endings.
I have read 5 books now from the Montana Sky series and they are such a joy! This collection of short stories has some of the characters I have gotten to know from the previous books as well as some delightful new characters. Perfect read to get you ready for the holiday season!
This book is a series of short stories about Christmas love. It was pretty gooey in that regard and not my thing. I quit reading when the story devolved to a tale about a small girl and her goose...just too sweet and heartwarming. It seemed a pretty good book about small town living in the 19th century and would make good reading for someone else.
