Fernando Munoz, call sign Cipher, is a vengeance class battleship built to protect human colonies from the Evendi. While trying to find the truth behind an accusation made by one of his fellow ships, Cipher uncovers a dark secret hidden deep inside himself. Finding the need to spread the word to the other ships, he unknowingly initiates a sequence of events that would affect not only the entire human race, but the Evendi as well.
I've always wanted to be a writer. I used an old Royal typewriter in high school to start my first work of genius - I never completed it. Over the years, I started and never finished more stories than I can count--and then I discovered word processors. Editing was a snap and as my time in the Navy drew to a close I finished my first complete novel. Although it was never published, it served as the basis for the entire Galactic Alliance series.
The books I write can be read by all age-groups from the young to the very old.
Today, I'm a husband, father of two daughters, grandfather, and a science fiction writer. I currently work as a database administrator at a nuclear power plant in Northeastern Ohio. I am proud to have served 11 years in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear propulsion operator (nuke ET).
I am an avid reader of science fiction and science-related books and magazines and I prefer to write science fiction that is heavily based on science. Of course, it is science fiction so the science often has to be stretched. I have also written two fantasy novels.
I am constantly trying to improve my writing skills and I enjoy receiving feedback from my readers. One of my more vocal fans is now a close collaborator serving as my content editor in my most recent book. An author should always listen to those who read his or her books; it's the only way to know where improvements can be made.
Since I discovered Doug Farren's Galactic Alliance series I've been a huge fan of his work.
Where the Galactic Alliance novels concentrated more on the technology of hyperspace, his standalone work "When Ships Mutiny" explores human/machine integration - and what a great job of it he does too. I won't repeat the storyline which is summed up in the synopsis, suffice to say as with all Doug Farren works - "It does what it says on the tin"
Doug Farren has a skill of being able to place factual/theoretical science into his work and still making it accessible to all. "When Ships Mutiny" is no exception and I do hope that Doug will consider extending the adventures of Cipher et al in further books.
Doug Farren represents everything that is great about indi-authors. His works are great value for money, are entertaining and accessible.
I thoroughly recommend you read "When Ships Mutiny" and if you haven't explored Doug's other work, I'd recommend you do that too.
This is an interesting and a bit different Science Fiction story. When the book blurb talks about ships mutinying I pictured a slightly different story but thinking about it, it is a fairly logical approach the author have chosen.
It is a quite light read though and perhaps sometimes a bit simplistic. Especially the ending which I would say is somewhat abrupt. I would have liked it to continue to something more conclusive.
Still, I enjoyed the read and I think it is well worth 3 Goodread’s stars.
The space opera, battles, etc. are fun. I found some of the premises a bit hard to accept. The author goes out of their way to detail how different an alien species is form humanity, then has the two races experiencing and reacting identically.
