This is an excerpt from the historical fiction novel Send a White Rose. It is a sample, not the complete story. Leah Masters makes a bad first impression on New Mexico Federal Judge Bartholomew Durant by fainting at his feet her first day in Santa Fe. Handsome, popular Judge Durant thinks he's got his hands full just trying to choose a wife. Could the beautiful Mexican Alethia be a rival for his affections? Could Leah's hot-tempered brother become the prime suspect in an assassination attempt?
I am from upstate NY and my husband is from AZ. We met in college and taught school in AZ, MO and PA. We have three children in their 20s, and currently we live in our tractor trailer and travel around all the 48 states. We homeschooled and taught in church ministries. We have written our books, produced commercial and teaching videos, and maintain a website and blog, now while traveling.
Over the shock when it suddenly came to an abrupt halt, I had to go back and check then wonder how I missed it. I mean the blurb begins with...The first three chapters!... Can't get any clearer huh?
In the beginning this reader is confused. Who is the heroine? Despite what's gone before or what's to come, where do I invest my faulty logic, my undying loyalty? Leah Masters, a sickly waif thin mail order bride who fainted at Bartholomew's feet OR olive skinned willowy Patron Saint Alethia who gradually dominates the story (ah there she is) along with Bartholomew's sudden awareness of a woman he's known since they were children?
Leah's story (that’s a tragic story waiting to be told) overshadowed Alethia's but I suspect hers is another novel. Only a suspicion though.
Not enough to keep this reader interested in finding out.
Words cannot describe the pain this book caused me.. I literally stared at the pages for about 10 minutes trying to figure out what the heck I read after finishing this story. I was confused about the characters, the storyline, and everything else that happened in the 35 pages of this book. I think it has a good start but I know while reading this short part of the book that I do not want to find out!
