With more than 150 million products in print and several NYT bestsellers, Max Lucado is America's bestselling inspirational author. He serves the Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, where he lives with his wife, Denalyn, and their mischievous mutt, Andy. His most recent book published in August 2024 and is titled What Happens Next.
My four children, ages three, seven, eleven, and twelve have enjoyed reading this devotion together each morning before we begin school. I really liked it because it's a simple enough devotion that the younger ones can understand it, and the older ones were still able to apply it to their lives, too. Each day there is a Bible verse and a short devotion that goes along with the verse. At the end of each page it wraps up with a Growing in Grace challenge that brings each devotion to a life applicable challenge. It's simple yet has a great lesson to start each day with.
My wife and I "discovered" Max Lucado and his writing several years ago. In my opinion, he's one of the few authors who can write equally well for all ages from toddler through adult about living a Christian life. According to the publisher, the devotionals in this book are geared for kids age six and up. As with a number of Lucado's books, the theme is God's grace, which he explains to kids thusly: Grace is God saying, "I know you've messed up, but I still love you anyway." Even young kids can relate to that.
The format for the devotionals in "Grace for the Moment: 365 Devotions for Kids" is a daily Bible verse, followed by a brief devotional and some "Growing in Grace" practical advice for applying the lesson of the devotional in a kid's own life. (This is similar to the format for the adult editions of "Grace for the Moment," with the addition of the practical advice.) By the way, there's no entry for February 29, so you'll need to recycle a devotional in leap years.
The devotionals are a marvelous way for kids to start their day. They're short - about 2-3 minutes to read and digest - but they're invaluable for setting the tone for the day and for imparting the message that God is a part of their life seven days a week, not just on Sunday. Max Lucado has proven that he can write for kids without "dumbing down" the content or style, and these devotionals are as inspirational in their own way as those in his adult books. The book indicates that it's "Adapted by Tama Fortner." All I know about Ms. Fortner is that she's a published author and a compiler of children's books.
I highly recommend "Grace for the Moment: 365 Devotions for Kids" for your own kids and for other kids in your family and circle of friends.
Note: I reviewed an advance reader copy of the book made available by the publisher through NetGalley.
Great devotional for any age. I also completed Grace for the Moment (the adult devotional) this year by Max and found I enjoyed this devotional better. The same message broken down for children reminds us that God's truth and teachings aren't complicated and we should apply them to our lives in all that we do.
This a really good book to read for devotions for kids and teens. They are short devotions that can allow you to set back time for God. I definitely recommend this to family and friends. Max Lacado is a really good author and I really love his devotional
Skewing even younger, Lucado’s message from Grace cascades down further into a family devotional format - one I’ve been sharing with the Littles. At 8 and 10, they don’t quite grasp everything presented here without some explanations or minor clarification, but they’re quite taken to reading this together each night - if only to prolong their bedtime ritual. Each entry offers a Bible verse, an illustration (story, not picture), and a practical nugget (sometimes even a project to work on).
