French Roast is book two in the Dare Valley series by Ava Miles. We first met Brian and Jill in book one. We knew there was a history, a history of love, friendship and hurt. And just when they were perhaps ready to bridge the gap between them, they suffered the loss of their friend.
Jill Hale, little sister of Meredith Hale, is not a journalist. But instead she has her own very successful coffee shop, Don’t Soy With Me. She has her Grandfather’s drive for business, just doesn’t have the black ink in her veins her Father, Grandfather and Meredith have.
“She’d wanted to be like him ever since she was a little girl, so it had frustrated her when her journalism classes had bored her to tears. Who wanted to go through life being objective? Telling the news. She wanted to live it all in technicolor.”
Jill and Brian had been best friends since kindergarten. But Jill had been in love with him just as long. Instead of her own name, she would practice writing her name, "Jill McConnell.” It was all she ever wanted. To be successful in business and to marry her life long love, Brian McConnell. But those dreams died when right after graduation, Brian left Dare Valley for New York to study to achieve his own dreams of becoming a famous chef. So when Brian came back to Dare Valley, there was no way Jill could ever forgive him for leaving her, for all the hurt he caused her. Just why did he come back anyway?
Brian McConnell thought he had it all in New York, but then it all fell apart. So, he went home to Dare Valley to regroup. And to try to win back the love of his life, Jill Hale. But Jill is having none of it. Slowly, he begins to win her back, to build back her trust. He’s afraid, though, that if she knows the truth about why he had to leave New York, it will ruin everything. And just when things are really starting to go well for them, his ex, Simca, comes to Dare. She’s French, beautiful, and wants Brian back.
Jill and Brian are discussing the possibility of opening their own restaurant together, but their ideas are completely different. Jill just doesn’t know if they can find a common ground. And then she receives an offer from the mysterious Mac Maven. It opens a whole new possible career path for Jill. But what would that do to the tenuous relationship they are building. And Jill is still struggling with some serious trust issues.
While getting to know Brian and Jill, I loved that we still get glimpses into Tanner and Meredith’s life together. And you will get to meet Mac Maven in this book. I can tell you that I loved him, right from the start. And Tanner’s sister, Peggy and her adorable little boy, Keith, now live in Dare Valley. I am loving this series. All the characters are so easy to relate to. I will be immediately continuing on with book three, The Grand Opening, for Peggy and Mac’s story. If you haven’t started this series yet, I hope you’ll give it a chance. You won’t be disappointed.
Jill and Brian has grown up together since they were young. They were the best of friends and Jill wanted more. Jill had loved him and thought they would go to culinary school together, get married and have some kids. Her vision didn't turn out that way. Brian wanted to prove himself and to all those who laughed at the young boy who loved to cook. His family never supported him in his dreams. Their love was also lacking. Many years later, after a sham of a relationship in New York and getting fired, Brian returned to Dare Valley to find himself again, and the girl he once left behind.
Brian can handle anything in the kitchen. Though committing himself to Jill is more than he knows how to handle. Jill's been waiting all this time, and what better way to get closer to Brian than suggesting a joint business venture together to open a restaurant. When Brian's past comes back and gives a tempting offer, he struggles with following his heart or go back to his dream. Jill wanted things to be different this time, but Brian holding back drives a wedge between them.
The problem(s): I got annoyed, then frustrated, then ridiculously bored that I skimmed the last 50% of the book. I had so many issues with the protagonists.
-H/h acting like they were still in high school. -All the secrets, blaming, and misunderstandings. A dead horse doesn't need to be beaten! -H/h moving in together when nothing is resolved to see if they "gel" in order to work together... REALLY? REALY??! *rolls eyes* -The cliches. Oh the cliches: "I was going to tell you, but then we made love, and we fought. I was scared, okay? It was so not the time to tell you another horrible thing about me. When you disappeared, I finally realized how I feel about you. I knew I had to tell you everything when you came back." -The constant "we'll talk about this later." Beating around the bush is a book pet peeve of mine!
Overall impression: This one was rather disappointing. I really had high hopes for Jill and Brian because I liked them in the first book. I couldn't connect with either of them here. Half the time, I wanted to shake sense into them both and the other half, I wanted to bang my head against the wall. I'll give it some time to see if I want to read the next book.
The set up Jill Hale and Brian McConnell have been best friends since they were eight years old. At some point, Jill realized that her feelings went beyond friendship and imagined they'd spend the rest of their lives together. But when he decided to go to culinary school in New York without telling her until moments after graduation, he broke her heart and crushed her trust, separating them for the next eight years. Now he's returned to Dare Valley wanting to make amends and Jill's not having any of it.
The issues There was more than Brian's breach of trust that destroyed his friendship with Jill but it was the icing on the cake after having rejected the notion of their relationship becoming more than best buddies. He misses what they had and wants desperately to get it back. He's also not being forthright about his reasons for leaving New York and when a "friend" shows up unexpectedly, Jill's not sure she can trust him enough to commit her heart and career to Brian.
What I loved Jill seemed a little on the immature side in the first book so I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy her story as much as her sister's. However, she had more moxie and toughness than I gave her credit for and I became a fan quickly. Jill's business savvy set her apart from her peers, having started her own coffee shop when she was barely out of school and managed it exceptionally. She's a loyal friend and rather fearless in dealing with everybody. She was just as passionate in her relationship with Brian, even as he repeatedly tested her trust in him.
Brian was deliciously flawed, so well meaning but boneheaded in the choices he made over and over again. His feelings for Jill were never really in question but his fear of losing her created obstacles time and again. As much as I wanted to scream at him for some of the decisions he made, I also couldn't help falling for the guy. And he had some serious skills in the kitchen! Do NOT read this book if you're hungry as he's pretty detailed about some of his French concoctions. He's one of the sexiest chefs I can recall and was incredibly romantic.
The bottom line This was the hottest, steamiest romance made even more delectable because of their friendship (and Brian's culinary talents). Brian and Jill liked and knew each other so well that you just wanted it to work. Their business and personal issues were adeptly woven into the story, providing a level of realism I found extraordinary. There are some really tough moments that will try you emotionally, but I love a good cry. There's also a secondary storyline that sets up the next book so very well and I'm dying to start it. I love this series and am glad I've got the next two books in the pipeline.
I always tell myself that I will no longer read these silly, meaningless little romances, but I still seem to find one or two unread in my library. This is the second in the Dare Valley series and, although the author did a better job including more townspeople in the ensemble cast, I wasn't won over. My major problem is with the lead romantic characters; their hang-ups and problems seem so trivial and insignificant. I simply couldn't understand what withheld them for speaking plainly to each other. Like I said, just too silly and frivolous for me. I prefer characters with more substance, more maturity, and real life issues.

Welcome back to Dare Valley, CO! Book two of the Dare Valley series, French Roast by talented author Ava Miles is a completely captivating Contemporary Romance starring two of the characters from book one, Nora Roberts Land. I fell in love with Jill Hale’s quirky and charming character in book 1 and was thrilled that French Roast was her turn to dive into the “love” pool. But will she sink or swim? After being best friends for years growing up, upon High School graduation, Brian McConnell shreds Jill’s heart by going off the culinary school in New York. That. Was. Not. Supposed.To. Happen. Jill was just getting up the nerve to let Brian know that she wanted more than friendship and he kept this huge news from her? Years pass and their relationship is now non-existent, Jill cannot get over what she took as betrayal, but today she is a successful coffee shop owner, independent, colorful and full of small town business savvy. She takes everything life tosses at her in stride, until Brian returns to Dare Valley, even more handsome and sigh-worthy than before. And there goes her heart into overdrive, again. Can they finally get together now? After all, hadn’t she secretly harbored thoughts of being Mrs. Brian McConnell for years? Between outside influences, inner turmoil and secrets not shared, these two are like over-caffeinated donkeys often pulling in the opposite direction from where they want to be. And of course, the entire town is all eyes and ears to the fodder for the gossip mills!
Ava Miles has raised the entertainment bar, again! Both of these characters will steal your heart with their antics, attitudes and fears. Can small towns be fun? If it’s Dare Valley, definitely, as Ms. Miles decorates her pages with small town charm and citizens.
I read to be entertained, and I was, completely with this light and airy romance peppered with pitfalls and setbacks! Who knew being the “fly-on-the-wall” could be so much fun? With her creative genius and sense of humor, Ms. Miles has penned a fast-paced, warm and endearing tale that had me smiling at the end and plotting MY preference for the next duo to “gamble” with the “badge” of love. (Yes, that was a hint to the author!) Do I recommend this series for lovers of romance? Oh, yes, absolutely!
I need to thank the author for my review copy! Next time I need a few smiles, I'll be reading this again!

French Roast takes us on a heart warming trip to hometown USA.
Jill Hale lost the love of her life when Brian McConnell left town. Now he's back after years without contact. Brian is trying to rebuild his life and he wants to include Jill in his plans. Jill has a successful career but she has always dreamed of reuniting with Brian. We get a front row seat as they embark on a rocky road to renewed friendship, romance and trust.
From the Prologue, I was completely and utterly hooked. I found the story memorizing, sucked into the hometown charm with all its meddling, gossip, friendship and family.
Ava Miles weaves a hometown tale that captures your heart and touches your soul. Her realistic, imperfect, characters jump to life and make you want to get to know them more. I cried, I laughed and I definitely picked Jill's side. French Roast is one of those stories where the characters become your friends. You can't help but come away with a warm feeling from this wonderfully endearing story.
I received this copy of French Roast from Ava Miles - Aspendawn Books in exchange for a honest review.
Fantastic audiobook, the narrator nailed the voices and emotions perfectly. I won this not knowing this author previous work but wanted to give her a try. I loved her pacing, characters and style. This was a perfect second chance read for the hot days of summer. Romance, Coffee and Steam
I didn't find the main characters interesting enough to care what they were involved in. Both of them seemed to be immature and having too much "teenage angst" even though both were older than that. Jill seemed to brainless and just silly.
Fun to continue on with these characters and I’ll likely read the next in the series as I’m intrigued by the tease of the next developing relationship.
I didn't like this book, I just couldn't. I can't give 2,5 stars so I'll give it 3. I didn't like Jill. The only thing she did was whine about Brian not loving her or thinking he would chose Simca when he told her time and time again and showed it too that he loved her but she just didn't believe it. Like, the first time he left he was 18 years old and the reasoning for it was solid, was the right way to tell her the way he did? No, it wasn't but the guy needed to leave. I understand she was hurt, I really do but he came back after some years passed and wanted to make it his home again, with her. And everytime he tried to explain something or have a serious conversation, she blew him off. How in the hell did she expect to move their relationship forward if she acted like a child? And at the end, I know she send him a message but the only reason she did it was because she was pregnant and that just won't do. If she wasn't pregnant, she wouldn't say anything to him even after knowing she was wrong from breaking up with him in the first place, she would have let him leave and paint him as the villain again. Brian had his moments, and I liked him a little more than I liked Jill. He was also frustating at times when he did what men did, thought he knew better what women intentions were than other women. He thought Simca understood that he only wanted the restaurant with her when it was obvious she didn't. And I can understand that was irritating for Jill. He didn't make things easier on the jealous and insecure front yes, but the diference is he didn't make it on purpose, he genuinely didn't wanted anything to do with Simca and thought he made clear to them both. But circunstances didn't help much when he was trying not to run into her and the whole d*mn town was always watching when he did. He was really clueless because he only had eyes for Jill, and that's part I can forgive him for. He made mistakes, I am not excusing him but the part where he had an affair with Simca who was married and at first he didn't know but when he did he continued, it was bad yes very bad, again not excusing him, but the way EVERYONE used it against him was not fair. I understand Jill feeling insecure around Simca because she admited to Jill she wanted Brian back, but throwing that at his face every single time was not ok. He tried to reassure her and she didn't have to trust Simca, that was more than fair but Brian didn't give her any reason not to trust him. He didn't cheat on Jill and she knew his feelings for her, he showed it all the time with his words and actions, but the way she just didn't trust him in general, wasn't fair. She kept punishing him for a crime that had nothing to do it her and that was the part I hated. I also hated the way she expected him to be the one to make a sacrifice, not her. Like, he would go to NY and leave her behind or stay behind and try to make it work in the food department somehow. That was so unfair. Why couldn't she be the one to move to another city for him? She never even once entertined that idea and what message does that give? "I expect you to make sacrifices but not me" or something like that. All he ever dreamt about was a new career in a fancy city in an upscale restaurant but instead he settled for smalltown dining. IT WASN'T FAIR. Why is it that he was the one that was expected to make it work and not her? God, that infuriated me so much. And again, I'm not saying he was an angel, because he wasn't but in this situation, he deserved better. He deserved to have his dream became a reality. What pisses me off more is that this would never happen like that in real life, and I know what you're all thinking "this a book Catarina, it's not real", but it's the principle of the thing. Why are always the men that have to make sacrifices and make things work, even when it's not their fault that things went wrong in the first place (not case here, obv)? He had dreams too and nobody gave a d*mn about that. All they cared about was that he had an affair with a married woman. Like that has anything to do with the rest. And the way her family thought they were entitled to know everything about their relationship and putting their two pennies in was just absurd. Grow the f*ck up, all of you. She is a grown *ss woman who had her own life and doesn't need to tell her sister or her grandfather her every f*cking move she makes. It was just ridiculous. And I didn't like Peggy, like the hell? Does she think she owns the town? Who the hell does she think she is bringing something extremelly personal from Mac's past to a town meeting and thinking she was in the right? She judged him from the first moment she knew his profession and was stuck there. God, I hated her. I can't believe the next book is about her and Mac. I will tell you right now he deserves so much better than her
OMG, what drivel. This book read like bad fanfic written by a 16-year-old. The repetition was mind-boggling (70 instances of God/Jesus/Christ used as an exclamation, 4 - 5 mentions of Brian's blue eyes--twice they were specifically described as "Bengal-tiger blue")...I could go on, but I'll spare you.
Bad enough that Brian was an absolute brat when he didn't get his way, but he also got a bit rapey when Jill didn't want to get physical.
There were glimmers of good writing, but they got buried by the dreck.
So I liked the first one.. but the second one not so much...
This was a very cute read. A story of ups and downs regarding relationships and how love wins every time. The characters are funny and keep you entranced enough to make you want to know more about them. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Alerta romance fofo!
Adoro-a.
Ava Miles has brought readers back to Dare Valley Colorado, and put us in the midst of the town’s very boisterous and colourful business owner Jill. Losing her best friend and crush just before graduation from high school, and not quite fitting in with the dynastic feel of the family newspaper business, Jill went her own way after school and has opened a coffee café. This little town has grown, and benefitted from her café, the hot spot and gathering place in town. But she has dreams: big ones.
When her estranged childhood friend returns after culinary school and years working in New York in a 5 star restaurant, Brian is looking for a change, and a chance to regroup away from the drama of New York. Never having really given up on being friends, or more, with Jill, he’s working to repair their fractured relationship: unwilling to go too far, for Jill deserves forever and more.
Jill is outwardly rambunctious and has a joie de vivre that is fun to watch: a redhead with the temper to match, she gains strength and sustenance from the town that knows her so well, even as she chafes against some of the memories that people refuse to release. Brian suffers from some of the same issues with the town residents, although his family was far less idyllic than Jill’s, he also wants to redeem his reputation in the eyes of the town, even as he cringes at some of the encounters he has.
The two are involved in a delicate dance as they seek to recover from the death of friend, and heal old wounds while offering themselves up to the potential of disaster in their business and personal relationships.
It wouldn’t be a small town if there wasn’t plenty of input and interference from others: with old lovers returning, new friendships being built, and the dynamic between Jill and her newlywed sister Meredith taking turns to add drama, laughter, support and build the overall sense of community so integral to this story and a large part of the smile factor when reading. Little insets from these secondary characters solidify the fun from the first book, and set up potential for further installments.
Dare Valley truly is a lovely small town, and manages to present a touch of the idyllic, we do see and understand the struggles that both Jill and Brian have with the community knowing them so well, and watching their every move. Laughter, tears and an unrelenting optimism are just a few of the many highlights within the pages.
I received an eBook copy from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I definitely loved this book. It made you, laugh, cry, scream. It gave you love, romance, friendships, hurt and past betrayals. Taking your emotions all over the place and yet giving you an HEA. I loved having both Jill and Brian's POV. The only thing I wasn't sure about was having Peggy's POV. I get the next book in the series is about her and Mac but then we should have had some of Mac's POV too. So it was a little off in that respect so I gave it 4 stars.
Brian has come home to Dare, CO after his life and career crash in NYC. He decides it is time to try and mend fences with Jill, his childhood best friend. Jill wouldn't have any of it until they their best friend dies unexpectedly and they turn to each other for support. Jill has loved Brian her whole life and felt betrayed when he went to NYC for school instead of Denver like they discussed.
She now owns the local coffee shop and is trying to talk Brian into opening a restaurant together in hopes it will keep him in Dare. Of course things aren't that simple. They don't agree on anything regarding the restaurant and then Jill gets offered a great job opportunity while Brian's ex-lover shows up in town wanting him back with her in NYC. Now can they must find a way to get past old hurts and navigate through a new maze of issues so they can finally have their HEA.
Book 2 of this series continues with the story of Jill & Brian. They grew up together. Brian left after high school, breaking Jill's heart. He's back. She is a successful business owner with new opportunities on the horizon. Enter Mac Maven. Tanner McBride' sister Peggy the cop has also moved to town. Thus begins the romance for book 3.
All the angst associated with friends trying to move on to lovers and the excessive lack of trust Jill has with Brian didn't suit me. The possible courtship between Peggy and Mac is much more interesting.
Jill seems to have a split personality, the bright chipper coffee bar owner who Mac knows will help his new project succeed is delightful and someone I'd want to be friends with. The Jill that makes it almost impossible for Brian to earn her trust is weak and too confusing. Maybe I'm too old (57) to remember what it was like to be 26 even though I recall clearly the high school best friend who was never my boyfriend.
I haven't read book 1 in the series, but it didn't seem to reflect on me reading this one, I think you could read this as a stand alone, its very easy to get into and take up the story.
Most of the blurb says what its about. But Brian returns home, and this is where he picks up with his long lost friend Jill. His love.
He wants to win her back, but how?
She has a proposition for him, but she doesn't know that he will use this to his advantage!
Its a very good romantic read with all the twists, turns, angst and love that any romance has, its a lovely summer read. I could imagine myself sat in the garden or on a beach somewhere reading this.
I've not read any by this author before and found her style of writing very easy flowing and nice to follow.
Disclaimer: I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I did not receive any form of compensation.
Back in September, I had reviewed Nora Roberts Land by Ava Miles. I instantly fell in love with the story.
This book didn't disappoint in any way. During Nora Roberts Land, we met Jill and her friend Brian. They had a major falling out prior to the beginning of the book. It was never really explained.
In French Roast, we get to see more about what went on with Jill and Brian. We learned why they fought and we get to see them make-up.
I was so glad to see Jill's story. I really felt bad for her in the first book. It was great to see her to get her happily ever after.
Now I can't wait to sink my teeth into the next book in the series.
I did not like it. Maybe because the first book characters were so brilliant I expected more. I just did not get the whole I trust you I trust you not. I want to be with you and do not with you part. Jill appeared weak, and so did Brian. Saving Grace was guest starring Tanner McBride, and Mermaid, of-course Arthur Hale. Also the tangent and the start of Mac and Peg story. Keith is adorable.
I guess if its full on romance I need a better story then I trust You and I trust you not. The characters were shallow and inconsistent. They were not grown up. I dont want to read about people with emotional maturity of a 12 year olds.
I know its fiction, yet, this story just missed me. I had to push myself to finish it! I am going to move on to Peggy. Cause I liked her and Mac
LIke I said about "Nora Roberts Land," too sappy, too shallow, too much! I was a sucker and took the bait when Miles left me hanging on a storyline in "Nora Roberts Land." I'm bad about needing to find out how a story ends even if I don't like the book that much. So I bought "French Roast" and was thoroughly disappointed. The characters were too unbelievable and so annoying. It's hard to believe there is anything that will keep these characters together beyond six pack abs and deep green eyes. Then, to top it all off, Miles introduces yet another thread to draw you in to the next couple's story. No, Ava Miles, I WILL NOT fall for that trap again!
This book had me in tears. I felt Jill's pain over and over again. Losing one of her friends in such a abrupt way and then fighting over and over with her childhood love. This book definitely had me intrigued and it didn't let me down. It is definitely a page turner and once again I must say I look forward to the next book which is just purchased. the characters in the books feel familiar because of how the families tie in together. I love the writing style and the backstory.
Finally finished it. I cannot remember the last time I read a book for that long.
For me, it was not that exciting. Jill irritated me, Brian irritated me, Peggy irritated me.
I mean, Jill has had a cruch in Michael since school and then he left to pursue his career as a chef. Now he is back (not by choice exactly, since he slept with his boss` wife) and wants to be with Jill.
This is the 2nd book in the series and the second Ava Miles nook that I have read. I liked it and like her. Like the other authors I read, she is able to bring her characters to life. Make them like old friend e's of yours. Also, maybe deep in my heart I want to live in a small, old fashioned town, because I loved the setting. Not so much Alaska as the town itself.
