Cinderella Screwed Me Over

Rate this book
Darby Quinn has a bone to pick with Cinderella. Burned one too many times by ex-boyfriends, Darby has lost all belief in the happily-ever-after that the fairy-tale princess promised her. She's sworn off love, Prince Charmings, and happy endings and she's happy about it. Really. Or at least she was…until she met Jake, her gorgeous neighbor and the manager of her favorite restaurant. But Darby has rules about dating, ones she's culled from her years spent with so-called “princes,” and starting something with Jake would break all of them.

Charming, fun, and unwilling to give up on her, Jake doesn’t fit any of the profiles Darby has created from her case studies of ex-princes-gone-bad. Finally presented with her own Prince Charming, can Darby take a chance on a happily-ever-after?

Full of wit and sarcastic humor, Cinderella Screwed Me Over proves that sometimes the perfect love, like a perfect pair of shoes, is just within your grasp.

3 stars, fun light and romantic, it could have been a solid 4 if there wasn't so many rehashing of the stupid rules and then the detailed story behind each one. The main character Darby was just so irritating to me, her stubborn opinions and judgemental attitude rubbed me wrong.

uf! what to say? this was some read!
It's so close to the real life that I almost thought I was actually in it...
It was funny, it was annoying, it was overwhelming, it was just the way it is in real life, too.
I could relate to it, I was laughing out loud then I was mad, then I wanted to throw my tablet across the room, then I decided to forgive her (the heroine, i mean) and give her a chance cause Darby, guuurl, you are some piece of work, I'll give you that...

Darby is a young woman who went through bad relationships and even worse break-ups almost all her life...then she developed a "life saving" theories based on famous fairy-tales turning her exes into the princes' roles who failed to play the part...
she got into it so hard escaping the "love" and denying its existence as such hiding behind those "theories" and sarcasm just so she could save her heart from breaking, cause there just could not be another failure...untill he showed up - Jake, the guy who just might be the right prince Charming who'll prove all her theories wrong...

I effin' loved Jake!

so somewhere in the middle of the book I was like

then I started to breathe again and all I could do was this

the quote that speak louder than the volume

"The truth is, fairy-tale beginnings are easy. It's what comes after that's hard."

well, NO SHIT, and welcome to the REAL KINGDOM! LOL

BUT inspite of that given enlightment, thank you very much, for giving me a HEA as well!

Darby Quinn has been in a lot of failed relationships and has given up on love, that is until she meets a guy that makes her break all of her rules.

The plot was bearable but the language was exhausting, most of the sentences were way too long. There was an impressive amount of unnecessary informations, things that plot didn´t need to move forward, same with the jokes. Incredible how much less funny a joke is when you follow it up with an explanation, and its not necessary to point out that a joke is a joke every single time... In my humble opinion this novel could´ve been a lot shorter, Darby kept going back and forth with her feelings about Jake, every single chapter she was annoyingly indecisive.

It felt much more like an YA book and not adult novel.

I still liked the story, it had potential and I will definitely read something else by this author.

I wanted to read this book the second I saw the cover and title. It just screams fun and Madsen delivered.

Darby grew up dreaming of meeting her Prince Charming just like the princesses from all the fairy tales we’ve been spoon fed since childhood. But in a hilarious series of case studies Darby exposes the reality of love & eventual heartbreak, complete with lessons learned, one fairy tale at a time.

Cynical is an understatement when it comes to Darby but I loved her. She has good reason to be sour on love and she doesn’t believe in Happily Ever After, yet she’s not a bitch. Cautious x’s 1000 but not mean or callous which made all the difference to me. She’s still supportive of her best friend who is getting married despite her personal feelings on the subject and excellent at her job. She’s flawed but also has a nice independent streak that I admired. (& yeah - I'm pretty cynical too so I *may* have related to her quite a bit. lol)

Jake. *sigh* I love a good guy and he’s the best. He’s strong, confident and incredibly patient with Darby, letting her go at her own pace.

Darby and Jake had sizzling chemistry but also a blossoming friendship. Those are the kind of romances that leave me convinced of the HEA.

Final thoughts: Super cute, quick read. I wish there were more books out there like this that mixed life lessons with humor and romance. Not everything has to be over the top angst and that made Cinderella Screwed Me Over a joy to read.

I went into this book looking for something lighthearted and sweet, and that's exactly what I got. Upon reading the first few chapters there were numerous times I actually laughed out loud, a rare occurrence. This humour continued throughout the book, which I really appreciated. I also loved how swoony and romantic this book was while still being clean. I mean, I wouldn't have protested at more make out scenes, but I really do love clean romances because you get so much more of a focus on the actual romance. You get to experience the characters getting to know one another and all the reasons why they belong together, beyond just the physical attraction.

Our main character Darby is sweet, but she’s also practical to the point of cynicism. She's been burned so many times, that it's difficult for her to let herself fall in love, even when a real Prince Charming may have made his way into her life. Speaking of Prince Charming, I really loved Jake. He's funny and charming without coming off as sleazy, he's patient and caring, and he sees the good in Darby. I appreciated how we also got to see some of Jake’s faults, such as him getting too wrapped up in his work. This made him seem like a whole person, not just someone placed in the role of “perfect love interest”.

What I loved about this slow burn romance is that it didn't feel fake. Darby genuinely felt like someone with control and trust issues, and we see that with all her case study examples. She had real reasons to feel the way she did, and she wasn't over the top about it. Darby wasn't an insane man hating stereotype like you see in some books/movies, she's just someone who is hesitant and scared. She tries to keep her distance to keep herself from being hurt again. Speaking of Darby’s case studies, I loved how she laid out her past relationships in that format, especially in comparing them to the Disney princes.

The romance in this book is top notch, but so too are the friendship and family elements. Stephanie, Darby’s best friend, was a strong support for Darby. She was busy planning her own wedding, so she wasn’t always 100% focused on the friendship, but she was there for Darby when it counted most, and she wanted the best for her. Their friendship felt real, and Stephanie was a great character who stood as her own woman, and not just as a caricature of female friendship that so many books present. On the family front, Darby’s family plays a small but important role in the book. From the scenes that they are in, it’s so clear that they are real, developed people with their own personalities and backgrounds. To do that without “info dumping” takes talent, and that was definitely achieved here.

Be sure to check out Cinderella Screwed Me Over if you’re looking for a book that is fun and swoony, while still being practical about romance (eg. it fully acknowledges that relationships take work, that you need to have the same goals, that you need to support each other, etc). I absolutely enjoyed this book: it was one that I didn't want to set down because I felt like I was a part of Darby's world when I was reading it.

Cinderella screwed me over. Literally.

What caught my attention was the title, actually. And I started reading and push through without expectations or inkling to what this story is all about. From the first word to the last, I actually got hooked.

So basically, Darby relates the fairy tales we've all watched since we were kids and those romantic comedies and romance movies to the real life relationships that we have into what she called case studies.Because of failed relationships, she swore off men. But staying alone is a b*tch, she have made a list of rules and a list of No-no's for a guy she wants for a "long-term low risk relationship". Someone she ought is safe

But since meeting Jake, it was like all fairy tale cliche was thrown into her face.

But Darby tried so hard to have her guard up. But no matter what, she keeps breaking all her rules so she tries so hard to remember and find all the reasons why she can't be with Jake.

"A person who lies about one thing won't hesitate to lie about something big."

"Never date anyone who you'll be forced to run into a regular basis if it goes wrong."

"Never date a guy who thinks you're more an object than a human being capable of using a brain."

"Slapping someone across the face can feel very exhilarating."

"Fate can be such a bitch."

    "Sometimes love's just not enough."

"Love never lasts. STOP TRYING ALREADY!"

But Jake, tried so hard to stick with Darby.

Sometimes you just need a little push.

Anything worth having takes hard work and a little risk.

Communication isn't the key to a good relationship. It's realizing that we all communicate differently.

This is a heart warming story full of lessons not just in love but also in relationships and real life. Filled with humor that will make you laugh. And emotions that will make your heart ache.

This book was just what I needed after reading some heavier things. It was light, funny, had me laughing, and just thoroughly enjoyable!

It is about Darby, a girl who is burned out and given up on relationships and getting her happily ever after. This is her journey to see if she can realize her Prince Charming is right there and she just needs to take another chance. She meets Jake, the owner of her favorite restaurant, and her battle against starting a relationship begins!

I simply adored Jake. He was so patient and even understanding of Darby and her crazy ideas to a point! Darby did drive me crazy a bit with her hot/cold nature but it didn't diminish the story for me.

My favorite thing though, has to be how she has kept a case study of each boyfriend/ relationship and compares them to a disney Prince gone wrong. It was so funny and refreshing.

If you want something light and fun, give this a try. There wasn't any steam but I didn't miss it!

“Having kids, the ups and downs. You won’t have those—won’t know the joy that comes along with it—because of your stupid theory on relationships. Not letting that into your life doesn’t make you smarter than me, it just makes you a chicken.”

**Synopsis:**
Darby has had a string of failed relationships so she no longer believes there’s such a thing as happily ever after. Every relationship is doomed, so why even try.

~ “I’m not saying I won’t find a guy to have a few happy months with here and there, but I realize now that’s enough for me. No future. No big wedding. No forever.”

Then she meets Jake at her favorite restaurant. He tells her he is the owner but she’s never seen him before and she’s there all the time. Therefore, she immediately assumes he’s a liar and turns her back on him.

Turns out he is not a liar and not so willing to give up on her. But with her gazillion rules of who not to date, it seems like Jake might never even get a chance to prove he’s The One for her.

** The following are my thoughts about this book: **

* * told only from one POV. I didn’t know the hero At All!!

* * too much inner dialogue and ramblings. By 4% I was skimming. This didn’t bode well for my interest in finishing the book

* * I struggled with liking Darby. She had a million rules covering who she would not date and it just made her seem uptight.

* * Not giving a guy you’re attracted to a chance just because he owns your favorite restaurant and lives in your building is just stupid.

* * the obsession with how relationships resembled fairytales was annoying because most of the time there really was no correlation. So trying to show that ALL her previous relationships (even if it only lasted one day 😏) had a fairytale connection felt forced at times. Plus, taking story time to rehash every relationship she had took away time from building a story around Jake and Darby.

* * In all of the “case studies” / fairytale comparisons, it was always the guys fault the relationship failed. It would have been nice to see some growth from Darby and some reflection and honesty about her own role in the demise of each of the relationships.

* * the story started to feel repetitive. I got it…..she had relationships that didn’t work, she didn’t do love. she needed to push Jake away and follow her rules. Rinse, wash, repeat.

* * the “ brother test” so she could dump Jake made me dislike her even more (if that was even possible). If she was too afraid to have a relationship, then she should have pulled up her big girl panties and said so rather than knowingly subject Jake to the brothers. I’m glad it backfired on her, but I was done with her after that.
~ “Maybe if you’d have looked for a reason to be with me instead of dump me, you would’ve found one.”

< b>* * I liked the supporting characters. Both main characters had a good set of friends around them and Darby’s family was close.

* * This book was too long. Pages and pages of Darby’s past relationships didn’t enhance the story. That aspect could have been trimmed down a lot and told at a higher level rather than in such detail.

**Overview:**
- Content Warning: none
- Setting: Denver, Colorado
- POV: female POV only. This resulted in not really knowing the hero at all and not feeling a strong connection or chemistry between the H/h

- Who is the Hero? Jake Knight (age: Not sure). Owner of a restaurant called Blue
* The following words/phrases were used to describe Hero: persistent, determined, charming
* H likable? Yes.

- Who is the Heroine? Darby Quinn (age: 30). Interior designer.
* The following words/phrases were used to describe Heroine: pessimistic, honest, cynical
* h likable? No

- h virgin? No
- First time they kiss: 24%
- First time they sleep together: 90%. It was behind closed doors. This is a clean romance
- First time they say I Love You 89%
- steamy? No. I didn’t really feel their connection. They kissed, but nothing more.
- OW/OM drama? A bit. Darby’s ex relationships were a big part of the story. She ran into quite a few exes throughout the story and went on a date with one of her old boyfriends.
- H/h cheat? No
- Time apart? No
- Did I skip pages? Yes
- Big secrets? No
- Did I cry? No
- Did I laugh? No
- Did I swoon🥰? Jake was great. He deserved better than Darby
- Cliffhanger? No
- HEA? Yes
- Epilogue? No
- Recommend? No

**Quotes**
My foot was inserted so far in my mouth, I couldn’t form words.

I’ve decided that communication is just what therapists preach, because they know that no one can do it. That way, they can keep getting paid.”

Everyone’s been taught this unrealistic idea that there’s someone out there who’s perfect for us. A soul mate who completes us. But I’ve found that’s just not the way things work.”

“No matter what you do, though, don’t look in the hall closet. That’s where I keep all my skeletons.”

Fun, quirky, and flirty; Cinderella Screwed Me Over was exactly what I needed. Have you ever had one of those days where nothing seems to be going your way? Then, you pick up a good book and your mood changes? Well, that's what happened to me with this book. I literally couldn't keep the smile off my face. Cinderella Screwed Me Over not only made me laugh, but also gave me a realistic love story.

Usually in my books, I find one character that I might like just a little more than the other. It's rare that I find a couple that I love equally. This is how I feel about Darby and Jake. There were so many ways that I felt I could relate to Darby. Between failed relationships, high expectations, and the reluctance about finding "the one", Darby struggles with the fact that Jake may actually be her Prince Charming.

My most favorite moments in the book are between Darby and Jake. It's the romantic in me and I'm a complete sucker for love. I, too, believe in the fairy tale. Sometimes it's a bit distorted and may not look exactly like what we think it will, but it is possible. But, I loved the truth in Darby's fairy tale analogies. She analyzes different stories, like The Little Mermaid, and compares it to a relationship that she's had in her past. These moments were truly a gift to read and what made me laugh the most. It also got me thinking about my own relationships and how I would match each relationship. I loved it. It was witty, smart, and entertaining.

Overall, I loved this book! I must have it in print. It's the kind of book you want to read again. Jake made me swoon and Darby was the kind of girl I could be friends with. But like I said, there is a strong romantic element, but there is more to this story. Darby really learns about herself and I appreciated watching her grow. If you're looking for something you can relate to, will make you laugh and SWOON...definitely check this one out!

Quotes:
~I look back at my relationships and noticed my dating life had been more like Con Air than Cinderella-you know, bumpy and full of bad guys.-Loc 39

~"You might not believe in seeing someone and knowing something's different about them, but I do. And there's something different about you." Jake ran his fingers down my arm, leaving a trail of goose bumps. Then he grabbed my hand and continued down the sidewalk. "So? Where do you want our half date to be?"-Loc 991

~All that time spent waiting for the prince, and then he turns human and you think, man, he was cuter as an animal. Who knew you'd be asking for beastiality in the end?-Loc 2054

~Sleeping Beauty obviously had some poor decision-making skills. I mean, some lady in thorns shows up and you go ahead and do whatever she says? Only I can't really talk now, can I? I knew I was going to get hurt, yet I still stretched out my hand and was surprised when I ended up on the floor with a broken heart.-Loc 3778

I've come to the conclusion that this book is now one of my all time favorites! Here's why without spoilers... Darby Quinn we share the same thoughts and possibly soul.. I've never read anything that after reading the 1st couple pages I sat dumbfounded because all I could think was OMG someone has apparently been inside my head and seen my secrets and I'm in trouble! It was scary for me lol... Then walks in Jake.... crushing!! Then I, I mean Darby, go through the motions. Too afraid to admit, questioning everything and remembering the past. Even knowing that sometimes yeah HEA exists you've been hurt so much that its easier to be standoffish, scared and keep everyone at a distance to just be safe and protect your heart... Only one problem... Jake is just as stubborn as Darby is and Thank God for that!! Even though he gave a mini heart attack but you'll figure that out when you read... Drew and Devin (Darby's brothers) perfect! we can pick on you cause you're our little sister but no one else can or there'll be hell to pay! ( I don't have real brothers so that's the only difference so far between Darby and myself) and when push comes to shove they stepped up and did the big brother thing and totally told her to "man up" lol... Drew is hilarious! His little life sayings were great! Devin and his normal marriage even helped ( his little speech to his little sister) make you see that yeah its worth it.... Steph the bff, I have one like that except mine isn't getting married any time soon... I'm sure my bff would give me the same advice and tell me I'm being stupid as she did... (I don't have to worry about that cause well no prospects) Even though Steph is getting married she still makes time for her bestie which is great! I loved all the diary references (I guess that's the best way to put it) with real bfs to their relating Prince... That was perfect! Ive never thought about doing that lol maybe I should lol... I also agree that its all Disneys fault lol... but hey Prince Charming does exist... Also proved that if its worth it, its not easy and that sometimes you have to stop analyzing, questioning, remembering the past and just stop thinking and open your eyes to what's there staring you in the face... so with all that said I can promise that this book will be read more than once by me! It will give me a reality check when I need one (just like the movie He's just not that into you does for me lol) .. If my rambling don't convince you to give this a try then you're missing out! ( FYI I've never wrote this much about a book ever) ... But in all seriousness its definitely one to not skip over! I loved it!!

Ee haliyle Jake'i de bezdiriyor.

Kitapta sevmediğim şeylerden biri de Darby'nin başarısız ilişkilerini not tutarak bunlardan ders çıkarması..

This is my first read by this author, and it’s just the kind of story I adore.  The flashbacks of Darby’s journey through life was very clever matching it to Disney characters as case studies.  There were so many snarky one liners, statements, situations, clever responses I spent a lot of time laughing out loud.  And, that was throughout most of the book.

One of my favorite scenes was when Darby was explaining to Jake how crazy woman are.  It was funny and so true.

I spent all of the book waiting for Darby's great epiphany to come.  It took so long I was afraid I’d end up thinking she was TSTL.   But, it came at the right time, and from an act of a pure heart.  Which is what Jake had.  There were so many times I thought, why does this poor sweet kid put up with her.

This was a story written and told to perfection with no explicit sex.  It was sweet and romantic while keeping it clean.   I wouldn't have minded if it had just a little more to the scene when this couple finally got to the intimate coupling, but I loved it anyway.  One of the other things that is important for me in a contemporary romance is that it seems to be realistic.  This story felt very realistic, even with Darby’s really dumb anti-love forever issues.

Moral to the story.....  It’s better to have loved and lost then to never have loved at all.     Excellent Read.

I. Loved. This. Book.

I had almost forgotten how much I love Cindi Madsen's style--great descriptions and dialogue with realistic storylines and couples that you actually want to succeed. She outdid herself this time, giving us a strong, swoon-worthy guy and a smart, snarky girl that I felt like I could actually be friends with, all wrapped up with some of my favorite Disney Princesses. ♥

After having a series of failed relationships, Interior designer Darby Quinn decides that Prince Charming isn't out there for her (or anyone) and is through with love when she captures the attention of gorgeous restauranteur Jake Knight. Their very first encounter is the stuff made of fairy tales:
I stepped forward, my thoughts on getting back to my table, when the heel of my stiletto caught. To keep from falling, I had to leave the shoe behind.

"Whoa," I muttered as I recovered from my almost-fall.

I turned around in search of my shoe and saw a guy bend down to retrieve it."

"I think you lost this..."

Sparks immediately fly between them, but Darby's got rules--lots of them, and she isn't looking for love. Lucky for Darby that fate has a way of working itself out. Darby and Jake run into each other everywhere. He owns her favorite restaurant and lives in her building. She keeps trying to resist her attraction to him, but he's persistent.
"Obviously you're beautiful. But there's something different about you that makes me not want to give up."

"You don't even know me," I said.

"And whose fault is that?"

"Cinderella's."

Two creases formed between Jake's eyebrows. "Cinderella's?"

"Yeah, Cinderella screwed me over."

Darby's had her heart broken a few times and relates each one of her break-ups to Disney's leading guys--from Prince Charming to Aladdin to Flynn Rider. She's made case studies about her past relationships to learn some valuable life-lessons (which I loved) and avoid getting sucked back into bad situations. Darby's determined to not allow Jake to get close enough to eventually become another ex, but he's pretty irresistible.
Jake slowed his pace and studied me for a moment. "I guess I just haven't found the right person yet. I t doesn't mean I don't believe she's out there."

"You don't have to pretend you believe in"--I threw up my hands and made air quotes--"'the one'" and falling madly in love to impress me. I wasted too much time believing in all that, so now I'm realistic. the odds of you and me working aren't great."

"But what if we do work out? What if we end up being perfect for each other?"

Can I just say that I loved this guy? He's definitely one of my favorites and I will be adding him to my top-ten list. I love that he's sweet and holds her hand and is affectionate. But I mostly love that he calls her out for her crap, both when she doesn't want to take a chance on being with him and when she tries to turn the tables and compartmentalize his actions. I love that he's also no doormat.
"Maybe if you'd have looked for a reason to be with me instead of dump me, you would've found one."

He's sweet and sexy and protective and I just love him, especially when he says stuff like this:
"I'm so crazy about you that if you asked me to give up watching sports for the rest of my life, I would."

and this:
"Couch or bed?"

I really loved Darby, too. She's smart and isn't afraid to admit when she's feeling vulnerable. I really appreciated that she started to discover that her own rules were dumb and that she didn't actually have everything figured out.

Her friends and family were pretty great, too, especially her brothers. I love that they called her out for being stupid and not giving love a chance. I loved the descriptions Madsen used--she's truly talented, taking us effortlessly from a bustling city to small-town country life. I totally felt like I was there and could really feel familiarity with even the most minor characters.

So, I guess you can tell that I loved everything, right? I did. There were a few things that I didn't like, like her reaction to something in Jake's past. I did love Jake's reaction to that, though, so I guess I did love it after all lol. I also didn't like Darby's reaction to the reemergence of one of her exes, and I would have liked more at the end of the story. Of course, this book has a FTB and I really, really wanted it not to.

Even the dedication is perfect: I hope you learn that you don't need a prince charming to make all your dreams come true, but that you find one anyway. I'm making this as a painting and putting it up in my daughters room. And bonus points to Madsen for her use of "twitterpated". I love her even more, now.

Great storyline, amazing characters, and the perfect amount of romance, all tied up in a princess-worthy sparkly bow. Total win.

Cinderella Screwed Me Over is one of those books that is pure entertainment. If I had to sum it up, I'd say that it's humor at its best, like a Disney story for all of us grownup girls who still love fairy tales, whether you believe in them or not. Darby Quinn was one of those girls who believed in and hoped for the fairy tale, until she got burned one time too many.

"Cinderella screwed me over. And really, she doesn't deserve all the blame. Jasmine, Ariel, Belle, Sleeping Beauty - whatever her real name was, she had, like three of them - they all added to it. This idea of happily ever after. Of finding Prince Charming. If you re-watch Cinderella now, you'll realize there are some similarities between Prince Charming and the guys you've dated.."

The above statement is how the book starts and the whole basis for how Darby came to the realization on her 26th birthday that "Love is bull**it. There was no happily ever after." She went so far as to create case studies relating her past relationship failures to the characters in fairy tales, which are absolutely hilarious.

For example: Aladdin Case Study: Allen/Aladdin. She then proceeds to detail the relationship and yes, compares the guy to the character. She ends the case study with - Time Wasted, then proceeds to list the amount of time she spends on the relationship. Then she finishes up with Lesson Learned, and lists everything she has learned from it and how it relates to her theory of love being bull**it and there not being any happily ever afters. Darby has a book full of these case studies, no joke, and they are hilarious.

Darby is fairly confident in her theory and in her conclusions until she meets Jake, who causes her to question everything she has worked so hard to believe in. Jake seems like the real deal, and as hard as she tries to put him into one of her nicely categorized case studies, he just won't fit, which frustrates her to no end. When she starts to really like him, as stubborn as she is, she looks for ways to prove he theory and find something wrong with Jake. Jake on the other hand has the patience of a saint with Darby, how I will never know, but he does, until she pushes too hard one time too many and screws things up, and she can't even blame Cinderella for it. Darby finally has to decide for herself if the guy she has fallen for is worth taking a risk on love again, and if he is, she's got to figure out how to convince him to give her another chance.

Does Darby get her happily ever after and her own Prince Charming? Well, you'll have to read the book to find out, and I'm pretty sure that you'll enjoy yourself and have a blast while you're finding out the answer. I know I did. Cindi Madsen has done a great job in writing a delightful and entertaining story that is filled with humor, romance, and is just plain fun.

Quotes/Teasers:

Toward the end of dinner the conversation steered to his job. He loved talking about his job managing a store that sold golfing gear. To hear him tell it, he was the most important thing that happened to the store....I couldn't care less, but tried to pay attention anyway.
"I have to admit," I said when he finished a lengthy discussion on the types of drivers, "I've been golfing and it's about the most boring thing I've ever done. Old men drive around in golf carts pretending they're sporty and getting grouchy if there's any noise. It's like nursing home Olympics."
Nick's mouth dropped open. "It takes great athletic ability to know how to aim and drive the ball that far."
"I get more exercise shopping at the mall," I joked.

Jake stepped ahead of me and opened the car door for me. "I'm sure plenty of guys hit on you. Obviously, you're beautiful. But there's something different about you that makes me not want to give up."
"You don't even know me," I said.
"And whose fault is that?"
"Cinderella's."
Two creases formed between Jake's eyebrows. "Cinderella's?"
"Yeah, Cinderella screwed me over." Without any more explanation, I got into my care and pulled the door closed, and fired up the engine.

The toddler started making this whine/moan noise while pawing at Tabitha. I know as a woman I'm supposed to have this innate love of babies, but the truth is, they kind of remind me of zombies. They stumble around, arms out, moaning. And if they get a hold of you, they suck the energy out of you.

When I first started putting my speech together, I'd searched online for help. Total waste of time. How was I supposed to read something aloud that made me gag? There was one quote that said, "Love is when you look into someone's eyes and see everything you need." Seems like a lot of pressure to put on someone And everything? Really? Like, do you have a cheeseburger in there because at some point, someone's going to get hungry.

Cinderella screwed me over. And really, she doesn’t deserve all the blame. Jasmine, Ariel, Belle, Sleeping Beauty—whatever her real name was, she had, like, three of them—they all added to it. This idea of happily ever after. Of finding Prince Charming. If you rewatch Cinderella now, you’ll realize there are some similarities between Prince Charming and the guys you’ve dated. Cute, charismatic, and kind of lazy. After all, what did the prince in Cinderella really do? He danced with Cinderella, thought she was pretty, and picked up her shoe. Then, did he go after her? Nope. He sent the duke. You’d think if he were as in love as he claimed, he would’ve gone himself. Instead he was, like, Well, as long as her foot’s that small, she’ll probably be about right for me. That’s what’s sold to us. Forced down our throats as one of the greatest romances of all time. The brainwashing starts at about two or three years old, when you first hear fairy tales about princesses, castles, ball gowns, and everybody living happily ever after. It’s no wonder that by sixteen, you’re shocked when your boyfriend cares more about looking cool or copping a feel than sweeping you off your feet. So you tell yourself it’ll get better when you’re older. Then you get older. You remain optimistic, because you watch romantic comedies now—they’ve become your new, more realistic fairy tales. You see lovey-dovey couples everywhere you go, proving that romance is still out there. Around the early-to midtwenties, some of your friends start getting married. You keep waiting for it to happen to you. I waited. And waited. But the more dating experience I got, the more I realized that guys aren’t princes and love fades, replaced with either mediocre feelings or full-on contempt. I looked back at my relationships and noticed my dating life had been more like Con Air than Cinderella—you know, bumpy and full of bad guys.
Dating became this sadistic ritual that always ended the same way—disappointment. With each bad date, each failed relationship, I grew more and more cynical. It was on my twenty-sixth birthday that it finally hit me: Love is bullshit. There was no happily ever after.
I started spending lots of money on shoes. A pair of great heels was much more satisfying than a man. They lasted longer, and better yet, they didn’t leave me for someone prettier.
That’s why, at thirty years old, I’m a year sober from love, fairy tales, and happy endings. And it’s not so bad. Really.
Aladdin Case Study: Allen/Aladdin My Age: 22 You know in Aladdin how he’s all charming and you’re rooting for him, even though he’s been lying to Jasmine the whole time? He comes in, says he’s a prince, and you think, okay, he had his reasons. He even tells her to “trust him.” Well, people do have their reasons for lying. It doesn’t make it okay, though.
See, in the end of Aladdin it was all okay because Aladdin came clean, admitted his feelings…and let’s face it, Jasmine was rich enough to take care of him, so it didn’t really matter. I think she should’ve held out for longer—maybe even ruled the kingdom without him—so girls out there wouldn’t think a little apology and flying off into the sunset repaired all.
I mean, how did she know he wouldn’t lie again? He probably did. But they never bother showing what happens after. In real life, coming clean doesn’t always make a difference. Because some dirty laundry is too ruined to get clean again. Time Wasted: Five months Lessons Learned: Don’t date someone obsessed with his car. Insist on seeing his place. Don’t buy sob stories. Dentists are evil. A person who lies about one thing won’t hesitate to lie about something big. Never EVER date a liar!
Believe it or not, I’ve been accused of being pessimistic. Pardon the hell out of me for being what I’d call realistic, because my optimism had slowly been drained one horrible relationship at a time.
“Do you always assume the worst in people?” I crossed my arms. “Yes. That way I’m never disappointed. It saves a lot of time and trouble.”
Nope. Stick to the rules. That’s history I don’t want to repeat. Little Mermaid Case Study: Evan/Prince Eric My Age: 24 Stephanie and I had lived in a tiny, run-down apartment the entire time we were going through college, so after a few years in the work force, we decided it was time to get a place that didn’t smell like cat pee and curry.
The night after he confessed he was engaged, I went downstairs to soak in the hot tub. And there Evan and his new fiancée were, making out like we used to. As far as I know, no sea creatures interrupted their wedding. Of all the princes, Prince Eric used to be one of my favorites. When you think about it, though, he fell in love with a voice—with an idea. And I can’t hold much against Ariel, because she was young and naive and easily amused by things like forks. At least Disney tried to make the ending happy. In the original story, she turned into sea foam. But see, if I’d watched the original growing up, maybe I wouldn’t have had such high hopes. Maybe I wouldn’t have expected a guy to accept all my quirks, love me for me, and ride out the storm together, no matter what life tried to throw at us. Time Wasted: Three months with him; four months trying to avoid him and his new girlfriend/eventual fiancée. Lessons Learned: Guys who ogle shamelessly must not be all that satisfied with what’s in front of them.
Would it really be so bad to go out with him just once? But I didn’t do very well with just once, not with guys like Jake. I got sucked in, started thinking this would be the guy who would be different, and ended up missing another piece of my heart.
A guy with enough hair gel for ten people walked up to me. “Yo, hot stuff, how you doin’ tonight?” His Jersey Shore accent was so thick I lost a few IQ points just listening to it. “I’m okay.” He puffed out his chest. “You need Romeo to buy you a drink?”
Looks like Romeo found his Juliet. Now there’s a story for you. I used to think there was something so lovely, so powerful about Romeo and Juliet. To be so much in love that you were willing to die for it. Now that I’m older and wiser, I can’t help thinking the lovers jumped the gun—or dagger, in Juliet’s case. The two of them barely knew each other. If they’d just played the relationship out a bit, they’d probably find that they didn’t even like each other all that much.
“I remember when all you ever talked about was finding a guy and getting married. You’d hog the TV, watching those sappy chick flicks—”“Then I grew up and learned why they always end the movie after the guy and girl get together. That’s when everything falls apart.”
“I’m sure plenty of guys hit on you. Obviously you’re beautiful. But there’s something different about you that makes me not want to give up.”“You don’t even know me,” I said. “And whose fault is that?”“Cinderella’s.”
Cinderella Case Study: Charlie/Prince Charming My Age: 23
Cinderella was the first fairy tale I remember—the one I was most obsessed with because of the gowns and magic and pretty shoes. Yes, her home life was less than ideal—and considering the talking mice and birds, she probably needed serious therapy. But she gave me the most unrealistic expectations of all. Falling in love at first sight, becoming a princess with everything she’d ever need at her disposal, and a relationship that ended happily ever after, with never an argument or bad day in sight. And worst of all, she made me think all I needed in life was a man to come and whisk me away. Time Wasted: Four months, but honestly, two of those were pretty fun. Lessons Learned: You have to actually talk to the person to get to know him.
That boy taught me a big life lesson about trust. Apparently not enough to keep from making several mistakes, but he taught me that not everyone is as great as they seem. Snow White Case Study: Sherman/The Prince My Age: 17

Nothing much changed over the next few years. I was never what you’d call popular, and when I went out, it was with my seven giants.
Time Wasted: Three months Lessons Learned: Tabitha Newton truly was the biggest witch in school. Some guys are only about one thing. Charming boys are dangerous. Assuming does, in fact, make an ass out of U and Me. But mostly just him.
“Your last name is Knight?” I asked. “Is something wrong with that?”“No.” Just that I’m anti-fairy tales and you’re a Knight. It’s not ironic at all.
“See, you look for the good in everybody. I used to do that and I got knocked down over and over again. I just don’t think I can pick myself up anymore. It’s one thing to get over the jerks—they shook my trust, hurt me, and made me feel like crap—but I could see them for what they were afterward. It’s another thing altogether to get over the good ones.”“And you’re afraid Jake might be one of the good ones?”
Rapunzel Case Study: Ralph/The Prince My Age: 23 There are several princes who remain unnamed in fairy tales. It’s like all they had to do was be a prince to make the girl happy. Sometimes, though, if you get desperate enough, anyone will do. I’m sure Rapunzel felt that way. When you’ve been locked in a tower all your life, you take what you can get.
Time Wasted: It was only one day, but the entire time was miserable, so it seemed longer. And obviously everyone remembers how charming I was at Devin and Anne’s wedding. The story is legendary. Lessons Learned: Brides are emotional time bombs. (I bet Anne wishes she would’ve just let me go solo.)
Gil/the perfect guy from romance movies My Age: 17 Yes, I realize this breaks the mold a bit. It’s not a prince or princess story. But really, Gil broke the mold.
About a year later, I got his wedding invitation in the mail. He’d met a beautiful girl and fallen in love. Part of me had always thought that Gil and I would get back together.
Instead, I sat there in the chapel and watched the only good boyfriend I’d ever had—my first love—marry someone else. So thanks a lot, Julia Roberts, for making me think love always worked out, even if you made money working on street corners or ran from guys who loved you.
In romance movies, everything always works out, because people who are destined to be together always find a way somehow. And the brainwashing continues… Time Wasted: I refuse to call my relationship with Gil a waste. We dated nine months in high school, a couple weeks over Christmas break, and three days after Devin’s wedding. I did, however, waste a few years thinking that we’d eventually get back together. Lessons Learned: There are a few guys who aren’t complete jerks. But it doesn’t even matter. Because Fate can be such a bitch.
“Don’t even start with your wishes,” I said, throwing up a hand. “You don’t get any more wishes.”
I leaned in and gave him a quick peck on the lips. “I’ve already broken enough rules for one night.”
Beauty and the Beast Case Study: Boone/The Beast My Age: 19 I started college with the feeling that no matter who I met, he’d never be as good as Gil. In a lot of ways, this was true. Still, there comes a point when you’ve got to try to move on.
“Boone, if I told you I was interested in being more than friends, how would you take that?” He stared at me like I’d asked him to travel to the moon with me. My cheeks blazed. “Forget it.” I started gathering my books, desperate to get away from the humiliation. Boone put his hand on my wrist. “Why would you like me? You’re really pretty. And smart. And I’m just…not those things.”
I stared at him, thinking that he’d gotten uglier and uglier over the past few months. And yeah, that does kind of happen in Beauty and the Beast, too. All that time spent waiting for the prince, and then he turns human and you think, man, he was cuter as an animal. Who knew you’d be asking for bestiality in the end? My grandma always hated the story, claiming it was ridiculous that a pretty girl would fall for a beast. It used to be one of my favorites, though—one of those true-love-will-fix-anything stories. Belle was so patient and overlooked his temper, even ignoring the fact that he almost killed her dad and imprisoned her. I’m not sure it’s a good idea to make girls think they can heal a guy with love and patience, though. Because most guys don’t ever change. At least in the movie, the beast really does learn to love, and his mean streak is broken. I don’t know if Boone ever had his mean streak broken, but I knew I couldn’t stick around to find out. Time Wasted: Three and a half months Lessons Learned: Getting mad once in a while is normal. Flying off the handle over every little thing is a sign to run. No aggressive or overly jealous guys. No letting a guy walk all over you. You can’t fix people. They have to learn to fix themselves.
“Sounds like I have some competition. I better step up my game.”I placed my hand on his bicep and brushed my thumb across the curve of it. “I’m your only competition.”He cocked his head, confusion creasing his features. “You’re my competition to win you over?”“Yep. Me and all my issues. And the exes who gave me issues. Oh, and Ms. Barbara Covington.”
“I like you, too,”I said, my voice coming out breathy. “But I always choose the wrong guys. Always. Trust me, I’ve studied all my relationships in and out, and no matter how much I learn, I still choose wrong.”Jake put his hand on my hip, like he had done so many times before, and slid his thumb between my shirt and pants, brushing the skin underneath. “I guess it’s a good thing I chose you, then.”
“That’s what women always say. Secretly they love a man to come in and sweep them off their feet.”“I prefer to have my feet on the ground, actually,” I said. “That way you always remember how to walk on your own.”
I stared at Robert’s name until the letters bled together. Before I’d met him, I’d decided all guys were immature idiots. But he was different. I remember thinking it was a miracle that I’d met a mature, amazing, and funny guy. I thought he might just be the one. Robin Hood Case Study: Robert/Robin Hood My Age: 25

Robert was a public defender. He was the “if you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you” kind of lawyer. Which meant he was overworked, underpaid, and took cases home with him.
That was the day I realized I’d been lied to. Even though I’d found an amazing, mature guy who I loved, who loved me back, it still wasn’t enough. I was crushed. And pissed. And totally heartbroken. Time Wasted: I refuse to say any of our ten months together were a waste. I learned a lot about myself.
I became bitter and went through a zombie/horror film phase. My favorite part was when everyone died. If someone actually found love in the movie, I booed and threw popcorn at the screen. Lessons Learned: My family is really, really important to me. I want someone with enough free time to spend some with me (a.k.a. no workaholics). Never date someone who wants six kids. The hardest lesson: Sometimes love’s just not enough.
“What’s going on?”“Darby dropped a guy because he liked her and she was starting to like him back,” Steph said.
“I just realized something. Charlie wasn’t Prince Charming. Jake is.”
Sleeping Beauty Case Study:
Porter/Prince Phillip My Age: 28 Prince Phillip, in my always right opinion, was the best prince. Sure, I’d be a little weirded out if a guy started singing about waiting to find his special someone in the woods, but that’s Disney for you. And at least he had good dance moves and a nice voice. Unlike several of the other princes, he had more than that as well. He was determined to marry a peasant girl instead of a princess, regardless of what his dad said, and the guy fought a dragon to get back to the girl he loved.

Aurora, renamed Briar Rose, stumbled across her true love in the woods. If I tried that method, I’d probably run into a bear and become his lunch. But no, she made me think it was as simple as a lucky encounter, a duet with words you and the guy just knew, and a nice long nap that ended with a magical kiss. Sleeping Beauty obviously had some poor decision-making skills. I mean, some lady in horns shows up and you go ahead and do whatever she says? Only I can’t really talk now, can I? I knew I was going to get hurt, yet I’d still stretched out my hand and was surprised when I ended up on the floor with a broken heart. After Porter left, I renewed my vow to NEVER let myself fall in love again. Time Wasted: Six months with him. A few months wondering if I should’ve moved to New York and tried to make it work. Several nights re-reviewing all my case files. Lessons Learned: The good guys always move away and leave me behind. If something seems too good to be true, it is. Love never lasts. L STOP TRYING ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!

That’s when it hit me. I had to go through a lot of bad relationships first, but I’d finally found him. My very own Prince Charming. Turns out they do exist. Touché, Cinderella. Touché.

I have to say that I was kinda saving this one. I read Falling For Your Fiance by Cindi Madsen and I really loved it, so I downloaded this and read the first page. So good.

It started pretty good, I was liking the main character, a meet-cute, a little mysterious, fine. The writing wasn't as good as I remember but it's okay. Then comes the downfall. Jake, the love interest here, has... Perfect Guy Syndrome! *GASP* *COVER MY EYES* *CRINGE* I KNOW! I HATE THOSE!!

I can't tell you how much I despise perfect characters, they disgust me! I waited, I waited for a flaw, for a temper to rise, for a sick past, anything, but no. I don't know why authors would create a perfect character? We're supposedly reading about real people, in real life.

*Deep breath* Okay, so remember how I said I liked the main character, Darby? Yeah, super scratch that. She's had a rough past, stopped believing in love after she was all for it because of some experiences. She rejects Josh as she doesn't want something steady or long-term anymore, but she wants something short-term and casual with no attachments required...? Yeah, that's were she lost me. She's basically crazy, she doesn't even know what she's saying, and Josh being the perfect guy, is patient *fuming*. He even gets mad at the right time (Being the perfect guy, we don't want him to be a coward, do we?)

Darby is just so infuriating and stubborn! I had the hardest time trying to finish this at all. The only thing this book had going is the family aspect. It was perfect (in a good way xD), I loved her relationship with her step-brothers and step-father. I could read a book only about them as a family.

Absolutely love it.. The heroine is beautiful, strong and independent character with a flawed of her own. Since she was a child, she loved fairy tale and hope to meet her very own prince charming. But the real world is not like that, bits and bumps along the way, few accident and lots of heartbroken before you finally meet someone you can share you life with.
What I like about this book is how the heroine lists all of her exes as a prince from every fairy tales with lesson learn from each relationship (it is funny by the way). Still she let her heartbreak blinded her from 'the one' man for her. It takes some time before she realised and almost lost her chance for an happy ending. As for the hero: I salute the hero character, for having the patient to wait for the heroine and still be the gentlemen that he is. To me that is the prince charming. Congrats to the writer.

Lesson learn: Don't know if the prince charming is out there but still hoping for him...

Darby has been hurt a few too many times in relationships and now does not believe in happily ever after. She thinks that things can be fine for a while but in the end will crash and burn so don't get too attached. I don't completely disagree with her or think that she is wrong for feeling that way...but, she does not need to be a total bitch about it. She meets a man at the restaurant she eats at all the time and he says he is the co-owner. Well Darby eats there all the time and she has never seen him so he must be lying, so instead of asking she acts really nasty. Then she goes on a blind date and is completely awful and condescending but "oh this guy just doesn't get my humor". Just stop, there is dry humor and then there is someone trying to pass their bitchiness off as humor. This book may see Darby discovering that she is actually the problem and not all of the guys but I just can't tolerate her enough to continue.

ARC from NetGalley

OMG!!! I loved this book, It is more realistic than most romance books, It reminds me of a lot of my experiences in dating.

The main characters in this book are so funny, I found myself laughing so hard I couldn't stop, It was a wonderful book and makes me want to get her other books.

I would give this a 5 star rating for the fact that it's realistic dating scenarios that most women now a days deal with, Loved the banter back in forth between Darby and Jake the main characters.

I am really glad that i took my chances on reading this lovely story. From the very first chapter; this book was filled with awesomeness. I loved Cindy Marsen's writing and also the book cover. You can't find another appealing title as this one. And yes "cinderella really screwed me over".
(P.S I would definitely enjoy if this book is made into a romantic comedy.)

This book was awesome! I loved Darby and all her views about love. So many points where I could relate to her.

The plot was different and all the characters were unique with their own personalities and flaws. Loved Jake.

*4.5*

Confession time: I started CINDERELLA SCREWED ME OVER a couple of months ago and never got past the first chapter. I thought it wasn't for me. Recently, I decided to give it a second chance and I'm so incredibly happy I did. (See sometimes you just have to be in the right kind of mood for a book).

CINDERELLA SCREWED ME OVER reminded me of some of my favorite romantic comedy movies.

After a series of horrible, soul-crushing relationships, Darby's given up on love and HEAs. She thinks that Cinderella and the rest of the Disney princesses have screwed her over, because men like Prince Charming and Prince Eric aren't nearly as perfect as they seem on the big screen. But Jake, the owner of Darby's favorite restaurant as well as her neighbor, won't give up on Darby and her pessimistic views. He thinks they can make it work, no matter how hard Darby tries to push him away....

Darby is cynical and sarcastic. She has a slight case of foot-in-mouth disease. More importantly, she's never afraid to speak her opinion, no matter how controversial it may be. When the book begins, Darby sees love in a glass-half-empty kind of way. At first, I had a love/hate relationship with her. I could understand why she had given up on love (some of her past relationships had been rough). At the same time, however, I wanted her to take the risk - to give Jake a try - because while you might not always achieve the most perfect HEA, you can get pretty darn close with the right person. Also, I loved Darby's sass. Some of the things she said (especially on her blind dates) cracked me up.

Jake is charming and relentless hero. He has the patience of a saint. Seriously, Darby wasn't always the easiest person in the world. The minute Jake was first introduced I wanted him to be the one. There was something so incredibly likable about him and I loved how he wouldn't give up on the people and things he cared about.

CINDERELLA SCREWED ME OVER is a romance; however, Cindi Madsen also addresses how fairy tales sometimes give girls unrealistic expectations on love and romance (a.k.a "Cinderella Screwed Me Over"). I thought she did a fantastic job of weaving Darby's case studies (i.e. how each of Darby's boyfriend's compared to a Disney prince and what she learned) into the book. They were interesting as well as thought-provoking and I especially loved how close they were to the "true" story. The romance here was slow-burn, and throughout the book it had the "will-they-or-won't-they" feel I love. I especially liked how some parts kept me guessing. For instance, Darby's biggest heartbreak isn't fully revealed until the very end; however, there's slight clues that pop up every once in a while that had me predicting what exactly went down. Additionally, I enjoyed how Darby's best friend's wedding preparations were included as well as Jake and Darby's respective jobs.

Overall, CINDERELLA SCREWED ME OVER is a unique, compelling romance. As I said before, I'm so incredibly happy I gave it a second chance!

This book will make you realize that indeed, Cinderella screwed all women over. 🙆🏻‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A really sweet, romantic contemporary with a wonderful plot and a likable (yet annoying!) heroine but the hero more than made up for that. Jake was truly wonderful, HOT, handsome, sweet and romantic... a true Prince Charming! 😍

A very enjoyable, fun read with a great chemistry between the characters. Super cute!
