With more than 30 million books sold, the My Weird School series really gets kids reading!
In this ninth book in the My Weirder School series, it's time for the annual Ella Mentry School fund-raiser, and guess who's in charge? Alexia's mom, Ms. Sue! She has the teachers selling everything from summer sausages and cheesy popcorn to dead goldfish in plastic bags to raise money for new playground equipment. But what happens when Ms. Sue crosses the line? Somebody's going to end up in the big house (and by "big house," we don't mean a big house!).
Perfect for reluctant readers and word lovers alike, Dan Gutman’s hugely popular My Weird School series has something for everyone. Don’t miss the hilarious adventures of A.J. and the gang.
The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
alexa's mom, ms sue, is in charge of the fundraiser. they have to raise $5000. they do crazy games to raise the money. mayor hubble gives them $1000 but ends up stealing all the fundraising money and gets away with it. ms sue writes a $4000 check from alexa's college fund and donates the money. mr klutz won't take it.
One of my students love this series. I can't get him to read anything but Dragon Ball Z mangas, picture books, and this series. It's practically like pulling teeth with him.
He will read this series though. So i asked him to read some of them to me, he did.
I hated this book and will probably hate the series as well. The grammar was horrible. The dialogue was terrible. It was kind of funny.
There was no characterization and the main character AJ is so flat.
I don't think this should have even been published honestly. It teaches you no lessons and the vocabulary level for this sounds like a kindergardeners not a second graders.
There is a school fundraiser. Ms. Sue got hired because she used to work at a fundraiser place. Mayor Hubble donated $1,000 and they already had $4,300, so then they had $5,300. At the very end, Mayor Hubble stole all of the money. I learned that you should not steal money. The mayor steals money and tries to frame Mr. Klutz for it. I felt badly for Mr. Klutz. Mayor Hubble bumped into AJ and all of the money fell out of his pockets, so AJ figured out it was Mayor Hubble. Ms. Sue never knew the money was stolen until she opened the box and it was empty.
I was enjoying it, but Ms. Sue was willing to give away her child's college fund. Minus one star, because that's just wrong. Then, they didn't get the money back. Minus another, no resolution. The college thing might actually be enough to not give this one to my child.

Nice. Gutman gives us a tiny dollop of more information on new character Alexis, the format changes to the bulk of the book happening on a Saturday afternoon, and the send up of School Carnivals is perfect. The ending feels a little weird, but I suppose I should expect that from the title.
Pretty cute kids book. My 6yo son loved the story and it had just enough pictures to help really keep him engaged in wanting to know what happened next.
It was alright I guess but the ending was very unsatisfying and a bit rushed in my opinion. Also, you can definitely tell it was written in a childs point of view and not in a good way.
Ms. Sue Has No Clue! by Dan Gutman is a book about a boy that is having a fund-raiser at his school. The book is about a boy that is having a fund-raiser at his school and the one that is in charge is Alexia's mom. I did like this book because its funny.I would recommend this book to all of my friends.
This is the ninth book in the My Weirder School series by Dan Gutman and Jim Paillot. We finished the My Weird School series and have been skipping around reading the My Weird School Daze books as we come across them at our local library. It's been fun to watch the children go from second to third, and now to fourth grade.
I think, however, that our girls may be growing out of these books, so I'm not sure if we'll read any more of them. They are fun, quick reads, but nothing more than a little brain candy.
This is a bizarre, but entertaining take on school fundraisers. The narrative is humorous and it's a very typical book for the series.
interesting quote:
"When your mom or dad comes into your classroom, you should always hide under your desk. That's the first rule of being a kid." (pp. 12-13)
Alexia's Mom, Ms. Sue, is heading up the annual school carnival to raise money for playground equipment. Faithful readers will rejoice in the familiar phrases and plot formulas that they have come to expect from this series. The carnival games are beyond entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny. Buy a chance to see where a cow will drop his "pie", pay a dollar so you do NOT have to kiss a toad, swing a sledge hammer at a junk car. Zany, silly, and just what kids find hilarious. I would have changed the ending. Couldn't a school employee have been driving the limo and then the Mayor wouldn't have gotten away with stealing? If the students had earned enough money to buy the playground equipment, then the ending would have been silly and satisfying.
School fundraising is not for the faint of heart. Can Alexia’s clueless mother Sue reach the goal of $5,000, for Ella Mentry School’s new playground equipment?? You bet she can! With the assistance of teachers and other parent volunteers Ms. Sue orchestrates the craziest carnival ever. So step on up! Buy a goat free lawn. Avoid kissing a frog. Throw water balloons at a teacher. Win a dead goldfish. Place your bet on where a cow will poop. Purchase a cupcake. Duct-Tape your principal to the wall and support your school!!
Other than the rather abrupt and terrible ending this was another fantastically fun read by Dan Gutman in his hysterical My Weirder School collection.
The second and third graders at my school love these books. They like that they are funny and use words like "shut up", "dumbhead," and "butt" as well as the exaggerated humor, some of which they don't always get. What I like about these books are the many idioms contained within each. It might be fun to make a class book about all the idioms and their meanings contained within each book...and you can also use this time, if you so choose, to address why using the words "shut up," "dumbhead," and "butt" in school are frowned upon.
Another bed time read from one of my daughter's favorite authors. This time, Ella Mentary School holds a fund raiser for new playground equipment. AJ's friend Alexia's mom used to be a professional fund raiser and is called upon to make this fund raiser a big success. Too bad Ms. Sue tends to go overboard, which is why she USED to be a professional fund raiser. Crazy money making ideas, a crooked mayor, and a dead goldfish make this My Weirder School book a fun read.
Also, in spite of the fact that he continuously uses the same phrases over and over from book to book, they don't get boring. These are definitely recommended to younger children that are ready for silly chapter books.
