Enjoy the first three novels from the acclaimed Appomattox Saga by bestselling author Gilbert Morris in a collector's hardbound anthology. On a prosperous Virginia plantation, the Rocklin family tries
Gilbert Morris was one of today's best-known Christian novelists. He lived in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his wife, Johnnie. He is the father to Lynn Morris and Alan Morris
The first novel introduces the Rocklin family and its various branches, shows a portion of the Mexican-Indian War, and focuses on the stories of cousins Gideon and Clay Rocklin.
In the second novel, we are shown the beginnings of the Civil War and how the Northern branch of the Rocklins are divided from the Southern branch by more than distance. We follow the stories of Deborah Steele, the granddaughter of Stephen Rocklin, a Northern Ironworks manufacturer, and Dent (Denton) Rocklin, Clay's oldest son.
It is still near the beginning of the Civil War when the events of the third novel are taking place. It's focus is primarily on the lives of Vince Franklin, the stepson of Amy (Rocklin) Franklin and a man named Jake Hardin. We also spend a lot of time getting to know Rachel Franklin, Amy's daughter.
As is the case for every novel by Gilbert Morris that I have read, these books are well written Christian historical narrative epics about family relationships and the importance of faith in God and specifically the conversion experience. Also, the development of all of the main characters was fantastic, and in each book, at least one person receives salvation in an intense encounter with God. Overall, these novels provided a strong foundation for what I am convinced will be another amazingly epic series by Gilbert Morris.
I think these books are well written and interesting. I can't say I enjoyed them very much though. First of all there were too many war scenes, which I should have expected. It's been quite awhile since I've read any Civil War era stories. Also, the majority of the romances in the book bothered me. I didn't care for the women who fell in love with men who weren't very good people (though they ended up being what seemed like perfect people, which also bothered me). I didn't think Clay clinging to his love for either of the women was very realistic or believable. I also didn't care for the huge age differences between some of the couples. There were a lot of characters to keep track of. The third book brings in a whole new group of characters we didn't know from the first two in addition to a few of those we got to know, so at first it didn't feel much like a continuation of the those stories. There were some characters who were mentioned but we never know much about them.
I usually don’t like such long books but I love history. There are lots of characters to keep straight but it wasn’t at all hard to keep track of them. I wish it had ended in such a way that you weren’t left hanging about things but I guess that’s how people sell book. Some of the theology is off the mark but as long as a person isn’t using novels as their source of learning about God it might be ok.....the problem is, most people don’t have a solid understanding of the Bible so this could confuse some. Over all I enjoyed the book and at some point in time I will probably read the next one.
I loved this series from Saga 1-3 following the family through the pre-Civil War to almost the signing of the end of the war. Family dynamics of young and old were filled with struggles and love. Throughout the strong Christian leadings were predominant encouraging to the actors as well as the reader.
This series has great characters and interesting plot lines within the setting of the Civil War. For Kindle, the first omnibus if currently free and the other two are very economical. If this is your genre, you can't go wrong with these. I read all three collections almost non-stop, couldn't put them down. I now have my husband hooked as well.
We have books that tell us the views of the civil war but this shows interaction of people before the start of the war and parts of the beginning. The separation of family's changing from South and North shows more than I ever learned in school.
These books tell the story of the Franklin family, Southern plantation owners. There are hood plot twists, excellent presentation of the gospel through the plot. The characters are interesting and the stories riveting.
Masterful storyteller, impossible to put down, you become engrossed in each of the characters, hoping for everyone on both sides. Even the villains have depth and stories told of how the got to where the are.
Talk about a saga, this was one. Rocklin, Steele, Franklin and I can't remember any other big family names. Deborah helps her boyfriend escape imprisonment but her brother goes to jail and is never mentioned again. I guess I have to read book2.
Southern families, Northern families, growing up together and having to choose sides as the Civil War begins. Love and hate do battle together as people learn what love and hate mean dying a war.
Love well researched novels! Gilbert Morris is a wonderful storyteller and describes the conflict of the Civil War as few others have. I am eager to read other books he has written.
One of the best series I’ve ever read! Some series are lacking in interest and action, this one kept me intrigued until the end. Highly recommend for Civil War buffs.
A rich story that follows several families through the Civil War. Historical events are so seamlessly woven into the lives of these fictional characters that the work often feels biographical.
This has become one of my top 10 favorite of all time. The characters are so well integrated that the story comes alive. I will brag and share this book many times.
Great characters for sure and a smooth read. I really enjoyed the almost 1200 pages. It would be a five star book for me but it does get a little to preachy for me.
This was a truly Christian novel, them characters were easy to Connect with. I would recommend the book and the author. Thank you for no sexual content. This story was very historical Civil war area. The sad parts were all the killing and slavery
Really enjoyed. Looking forward to reading the next book in series. I love fiction that also includes factual information on U.S. history. We are now into the Civil war after Lincoln began president. Easy way to learn what I didn't care to learn when I was in school.
The Rocklin family is a fine Southern family, and these books about them were enjoyable. As with most Gilbert Morris books, there are a few things I feel like I have read from him before - but overall worth the read.
