White Knight

Rate this book
Hoping for some excitement and a little extra money, A.J. Knight signed up to be a Houston EMT. However, when he did, he never thought about the life-and-death situations he'd be put into or the lives that he might be called on to save. Worse, he never so much as considered the lives that might be lost while he was working to save them.

Eve Knox understands what it's like to have life ripped away in an instant. After the death of her first and only love in an unimaginable tragedy, she is struggling to go on with a life that seems to have been stripped of its former meaning. Hurting and alone, Eve knows her friends are just trying to help her cope, but their attempts to fill the void in her heart are starting to smother the spirit she once had. She sees no point in searching for love a second time, what happens when a second-chance love shows up in a way she never saw coming...

“You always have a choice. Whether you make it or you let it make itself,” says A. J. Knight in Stacy Stalling’s White Knight. As an EMT he is often the white knight riding to the rescue, making life or death decisions for people in crisis. But choosing to fall in love comes under a completely different category. Meanwhile Eve Knox is slowly crawling out from the choice she made to hide when her life fell apart.

While this is book 2 of a series it reads like number one—new characters taking center stage and old ones providing a solid background of genuine relationships. In fact, I didn’t even realize it was book two until I finished reading. The dialog has the pitch-perfect cadence of a movie set, providing all the enjoyment of meeting real characters and wanting to know them better. And the action speeds up from a rather slow start, gluing readers to the page when the protagonists take an ill-timed skiing trip.

Not just a romance, this novel has great locations, pleasing characters whose hidden depths emerge in dialog and crisis, and some intriguing questions of how to move on after loss. There’s a gentle touch of faith as well, and an enjoyable hint of mystery lurking behind that White Knight’s smile. I think this is the first book I’ve read by this author, but I hope it won’t be the last.

Disclosure: I was given a free ecopy of this novel an, having enjoyed reading it, I’m writing an honest review.

Christian contemporary romance. Other reviewers complained that it wasn't completely Christian, because there was drinking, gambling, and sexual tension. There also wasn't much mention of God, except when characters were going through something and prayed silently. However, I am sure that if the author did not classify her books as Christian, many readers would complain that they mentioned God and were missing sex scenes. Anyway, I really enjoyed the book and read it in a couple of sittings. I was moved to tears at one scene when Eve is grieving. I liked almost all the characters and felt that they were well portrayed with human failings. I didn't have trouble keeping the characters straight, as one reader complained. Often I'm the first to make this complaint, and in this case I'm sure if I had read the first book in the series recently, I would have quickly remembered who the characters were rather than needing to read on to get it. I did get frustrated that there were numerous grammar and wrong word errors, and a persistent lack of commas after introductory phrases. For the normal price of these books, I would expect much better editing. But, I was lucky to get it for free on Kindle during a promotion. I will keep reading this author.

White Knight by Staci Stallings was free on kindle and I downloaded it and enjoyed reading this heartwrenching romance.
Eve Knox struggles beneath the weight of grief even two years after her beloved husband Dustin, a firefighter, dies as a result of a fighting a fire. She buries herself in her work and suffers the matchmaking of well-meaning friends.

A.J. Knight was a wanna-be drummer who couldn't make it and returned home to work as an E.M.T. He was the paramedic who as a novice was first on the scene to care for Dustin as he was recovered fatally burned from a fire. That day, along with many others, haunts his soul and overshadows the lives he has saved.

When A.J. and Eve meet, laughter erupts and wounded hearts begin to heal and hope, except that A.J. has never told Eve about his perceived failure and culpability in her husband's death. He assigns blame for the grief and sorrow she has suffered.

Can two wounded people overcome the heartache of the past and reach for a future of love and laughter? This story is is a heartfelt journey of two such people and how memories of pain can overshadow the wonder and joy of love. This is a well-written book. The first chapter was difficult in trying ot sort through all the characters involved but it soon becomes clear and easier to follow. Staci draws characters whose pain is experienced by the reader and a pain that is hard to set aside even when the book reaches it's happily-ever-after and the final page turns.

Review of White Knight, by Staci Stallings.

If I am asked to give themes for this play: It would be of Moving on after a loss and overcoming unseen barriers mount up by FEARS! And secondly, would be Never Judge a fellow by his outlook.
At the beginning, we are introduced to Eve who was still grieving over the loss of her firefighter husband, Dustin, who died from injuries sustained while fighting a fire and feeling as if everything good in her life was lost. This story unwinds with her struggle to find a reason to go forward when it is as if all about her life was a dream. And though she was indeed lonely, yet in the midst of her friends pretend as if she is in control not wanting intrusions into her life, yet the author shows the part played by a group of true loving friends interested in making her come out of her grief and move on.
The story continues as AJ Knight was brought more into focus. Here we meet a young man laden with guilt though puts up a strong bold face, quietly suffering and wishing to right what he thinks is a wrong he had committed. Probably as his name KNIGHT, he had focus on the fact of ‘supposedly to be one of RESCUE’, and this he tries to do at any given opportunity that presents itself. Therefore when he could not prevent the death of Dustin, whom he cared for as he was the paramedic after he injured – he was heart-broken. And now having to watch Eve suffer the grief at close range could only tear him inwardly apart with a sense of failure. As a person, he truly has a carefree spirit that makes one wonder if he is matured until he speaks. But we find out that it is just the surface, as when look more closely inside you discover the insecurities, fears and even uncertainties about his future. So when he came to know Eve more intimately he knew that ‘she was too much for him’ and all of his inward looking created deep barriers and the author helps in breaking these barriers one after the other.
Along the line, Eve learns with the help of AJ whom as she began relating closely with, that he is not just the young man whom she is older than but one who speaks with the wisdom older than his age or outlook. She listens when he speaks and saw wisdom in what he says. He was fun for her to be with and has a way of making her forget her grief. And it was not surprising when she fell in love with him though constantly fighting the sanity of it. Also she came to know that LIVING TAKES COURAGE! We also see that when she had to help Lisa through labor – she was so sure that she will pass out but in the face of it, she was strong though she was hearing the voice of AJ constantly at the back of her mind.
As always with Staci’s book, her characters’ lives to take one on a ride of learning with them. When AJ told Eve “You made the decision, courage can’t be far away.” This is so true as it portrays in daily life that most problems with man is doing the first things, which is, MAKE FIRST THE DECISION’ and courage will come like the wind to carry you through it all.

Read like a Mills & Boom /Harlequin publication even though it wasn't one of theirs. Wasn't quite what I had hoped it would be. The main characters were working adults in their mid-to-late twenties, but I thought their actions and attitudes were, more often than not, like those of much more immature individuals. That didn't impress me much. Another thing that didn't impress me was the fact that the word "Christian" in the sub-title was misleading. I didn't read anything particularly "Christian" in the novel.

A Good Romance

My rating is actually 3.75 stars, but overall, the storyline was interesting enough and the characters were constructed well enough to keep me reading to the end. I loved that the relationship between the hero and heroine grew slowly over time. I also cried with them at several points.
What really knocked the rating down for me were the technical issues. There were some parts which were oddly worded or a wrong word was used. There were enough instances that it annoyed me, but not enough for me to quit reading the book. I might read another in the series in the future. This is the second book I've read from the series. The stories really are worth the trouble, but I have to be in the mood to read them.
One thing I love about these books is that the characters generally exhibit Christian morals and they're not rushing to hop into bed with someone. But one thing I hated was that you never see the characters pray (unless they're in trouble or need something), or go to church, or do anything which would remotely help them enrich their spiritual lives or at least show that God is an intrinsic part of their lives. It comes across as almost token.
If you enjoy sweet, clean romance, and don't mind the things that bothered me, this may be a good book/series for you.

This Christian romance really touched my heart. I know how it feels to still be missing the husband, even after years have gone by, at the same time the widow might wish for comforting arms around her. Five easy stars for this one.

How does the devastated widow of a fireman learn to laugh again, even after a two-year mourning period, when that fireman was everything? Eve's heart still belongs to the husband she'll never see again. Eve knows her friends are just trying to help, but it doesn't help when they try to pair her up with one after another of their friends. Why don't they leave her alone?

AJ Knight has a few memories he wants to burn away, but Eve isn't helping. He's attracted to her, but she would never want to see him again if she knew his secret. He has to keep her at arm's length.

Average

This book is an average romance. I got frustrated with A. J. When he started having a self pity party. Also, I didn't realize how outdated this book was. Astro World has been closed for about fifteen years now. Since 2005. Not that that part of the story should be changed. When Eve and A.J. were on the Texas lightning roller coaster and it started raining I knew that I wouldn't like the rest of that scene. In the Texas heat rain is not cold. Also they always shut down that and other rides at the first hint of rain. Even a dark cloud at a distance. I know because my kids complained enough about that since it was their favorite ride.

Eve is a firefighter's widow who has checked out of life. She let's her friends set her up with people even when she doesn't like them or want to. Enter AJ, a parimedics, who is a fun loving man a few years younger than Eve. Her heart starts to open but then trouble starts. Enjoyed the book but at times Eve got on my last nerve with all the roadblocks she put up. AJ blames himself for her husband's death when it wasn't his fault. Do they make it together? A bit too much drinking for my taste in a faith-filled novel but live the author

I almost gave up on reading this book. The first part really dragged with Eve and AJ dealing with their own dramas. But when they go to New Mexico with friends Lisa and Jeff, things get intense. Lisa is pregnant and goes into labor while the guys are out skiing. Eve tries to take her to the hospital but gets the truck stuck. How they bring this baby into the world is riveting. By then, I was hooked on where Eve and AJ's relationship would go. If you want romance, this book is definitely for you.

Staci Stallings did it again

This book was as awesome as the first. I truly love her ability to make the characters so real and down to earth. They are just like your next door neighbors, or your good friends. The situations are so real, you can easily envision yourself there in that same one. You find yourself thinking would I handle this like this. I love her stories where life is not exactly perfect, but in the end it is perfect enough!!!

White Knight: A Contemporary Christian Romance Novel (The Courage Series, Book 2)

I thought this second book's focus on coping with the void left after a death of a loved one and learning how to move forward in living was realistic as well as inspiring. The help of God and friends a very important component. I would recommend this story to anyone looking for inspiration in how to move forward in living their life after experiencing a lose in their lives. Well done!

I downloaded this free on kindle just for something light to read every now and then for relaxation. It met that purpose. I did think that there would be more about personal relationship with God, so was a little disappointed in that but otherwise- a good lazy afternoon kind of reading or as I did relaxation before bed.

Such a good book to get lost in! Loyal & faithful friends have each others backs & support each other through scary & sad situations, job situations & generally trying to live life depending on God's love. I would like to have known even more of AJ's backstory, but who could have kept from falling for him? I loved Jeff & Lisa's story continued & overall, enjoyed another sweet love story!

A Crystal Rose

Staci writes great characters. However, for me the story got bogged down with the details of a string of activities, such as parties, skiing, amusement parks, poker nights and so on. Still, the way she skillfully weaves faith in God throughout the story makes it a book worth reading.

My first by this author, it will also be my last. Steeped in misery for the most part, it went on for far too long just so the author could put her protagonists through more misery, it was also in desperate need of a proofreader. The plural of ski, for example, is not skies! Words left out, sentences changed but the old words left in - and so it goes on. Could have been much better.

Fun Read

This is a nice Christian romance. It didn't have quite as much emergency services theme as I thought it might. But I enjoyed reading it and loved the way the courage theme was woven throughout the book.

Wonderful

This is wonderful 2nd story in this series. Eve is still dealing with the loss of Dylan, but Lisa & Jeff are trying to help. Dante is getting to pushy. But AJ is being a great friend. But there is a spark there. Is she ready.

A widow finds a new love

A widow who believes she will never find joy or love again finds herself drawn to someone who makes her laugh, for the first time in a long time. There is more to him than that. Tears, secrets and living in the present, not the past.

Couldn’t put it down!

Great characters and a story that keeps you turning the pages. Eve seems pretty perfect on the outside but won’t let anyone get close enough to see how broken she is inside. Her Knight is the only one to see her cry and the one who can help her, but he believes his secret will make her hate him... This is a must read, full of heart!

Interesting

Must admit, I struggled with this book; it had many names and relationships in it that I could not fathom. It was like I stepped into a story half way through. Apart from that, loved AJ.

From dark to light

The secret that AJ was hiding made the pain that Eve wore even more painful to watch. To watch the jurney that love took without the baggage of a non Christian slant was a blessing!
