Bekki loves being back in her hometown of Harroway. Things are steaming up between her and hunky Detective Nick Malonie. Business at her hair and beauty salon is booming. She is rekindling old, and making new friendships. Life couldn’t be better! That is, until she finds the body of the new bakery owner, Lydia Michaels, dead in her bakery. It looks like she committed suicide, but Bekki’s gut instinct tells her that things are not what they seem. After finding evidence to support her theory she goes searching for the truth. Will Bekki be able to find the killer and protect herself without destroying her developing romance with Detective Nick?
I love how the cozy mysteries take place in small towns. For small towns they are a hot bed for murder and mystery. Oh and gossip. It’s so entertaining to see.
In the second book of the series, Bekki is starting to get more comfortable being back home. Her relationship with Nick is progressing nicely. Yay. I love that man and his patience with her (especially in this book) is just wow. He really does have the patience of Job. Her hair salon is doing well and she is enjoying life in a small town compared to the city. Here she orders a cake for her friend’s birthday and goes to pick it up only to find the bakery owner dead. And the fun begins. Bekki being Bekki gets involved in the case when she feels it isn’t going how it should for she thinks there is more to meet the eye than what they are seeing. She pushes Nick’s patience quite a bit and you can see that but man that guy is steady in his understanding and support of her even when it interferes with his job.
The snooping Bekki does begins with the mysterious in law that comes into town and is snobby to boot. Man she wasn’t wrong there. So many little reveals and twists about the baker that you are kept on your toes for sure. While she is getting in trouble with her snooping, her salon is going stronger than ever. I often wondered how her salon kept going with her always snooping about. It is entertaining to say the least. Her findings do put Bekki in danger and as things unravel Nick helps keep her safe.
The story is fun, lighthearted and entertaining. I love Nick and how supportive of Bekki he is. He deals with alot when it comes to her and he takes it all in stride. Bekki is determined as ever and stubborn. It’s fun to watch her go about trying to find things out and sometimes get herself in a pickle that she needs NIck to get her out of. So entertaining. The little reveals and twists keep you in the story and just enjoying every moment of the book. Great second book and look forward to the next.
Bekki has just moved back to her parents home in the town of Harroway.
Her Mom owns a beauty salon, where Sammy and Bekki also are working too. They are all are good beauticians.
In a few days it will be Sammy's birthday and Bekki want it to be a surprise party.
She goes to the bakery close their shop, owned by Lydia Michaels to order a birthday cake. She asks if she can pick it up early the day. But Lydia tells she come to get cake after Bekki closes the salon. Lydia said she stays later after she closed the bakery and that she would leave back door open and to come in and pick the cake.
Bekki opens the back door but are no lights on. She calls out to see if she can find Lydia. But when get by the front bakery, she finds Lydia dead.
Bekki has been seeing her old boyfriend, who is now a police detective on Harroway PD. His name is Nick Malonie.I
Bekki decides to investigate this case, even though it has been ruled a suicide at this time.
There is so much more to this story you need to read this book!
There is danger also, and Bekki will not give on her investigation.
A fun quick novella with some great characters. I love Bekki and her group of friends though I am still on the sidelines if I like Nick as her love interest. A good story line that kept me turning the pages till the end. I love the way the characters interact with the exception of Nick who seems to quick to keep telling Bekki that her instincts are wrong but I will give him credit that he does admit when he is wrong and she is right so maybe there is hope for him.
Bekki girl, you sure don’t seem to know fear, in fact you face it a lot! She got herself into a couple ticklish situations in this book. She did get out from one as she’d planned, but with a killer showdown, she could’ve been dead meat.
In all her insisting on breaking into places to sleuth and her never-give-up nature, I still like Bekki’s character. She’s a real friend to all, and anyone would be lucky to call her a friend.
As always the premise of this book is interesting enough and the characters are likable. There are however many plot holes and it is not as fleshed out as it should be that I can't give it higher than a 3 or 6/10.
What I had issue with: -Bekki just knows her friend didn't commit suicide. She has a hunch and sees some suspicious items at the crime scene yet the police don't care and rule it a suicide. Even with suicides police still have to gather evidence before ruling it as such. They can't just say it is one... -Bekki just breaks into the bakery not thinking that the son of the dead owner might happen to return to do some tidying up... -If the murderer isn't in their hotel room how do they know Bekki stole the note pad? How do they even know Bekki is investigating? And just bc they had a blue notepad in their room doesn't mean they wrote the suicide note. Anyone from that hotel could have. -Nick forgives Bekki too easily. They need a relationship check. She's walking all over him and the law and he just tells her good job. -We know who did it from the get go. No twist... -If Lydia had a choice between being shot slowly to death and hanging herself why didn't she go with the slow shot? I mean she knew Bekki was coming over within an hour to pick up the cake. She could put something over the wound and hope for help....and if the murderer lied and was gonna shoot her in the head that's assuredly less pain and quicker than being strangled to death.
Due to these issues I definitely couldn't rate the Book higher than 3 stars. As I said interested premise, fun characters, but not a whole lot of investigation or fleshed out plot in this.
I don't agree with all the methods used by Bekki in this book. A lot of amateur sleuths toe the line between legal and illegal, but Bekki completely disregards the law in this book. I don't like how Nick just sweeps everything under the rug. I get that he is supposed to love her babe is a cop and needs to act like one.
I did like the mystery in this book. It made a personal for Bekkibut also separate enough that she could step back and think about it.
This is the second in this "Bekki the Beautician Cozy Mystery" series. While it won't keep you on the edge of your seat, it is exactly what it pertains to be "cozy" (or at least, as I see it). Light, interesting, but not going to keep you awake trying to figure out "what's next". The writing is good, no glaring editing errors that I noticed and just enough mystery to hold your interest. The mystery in this book is not so much "who" (that was pretty much evident) but "how". The only thing that I found a problem is Bekki's actions (actually interference) in a police investigation - after her boyfriend warned her to stay out of it. Even so, I am enjoying this series enough to continue. I like how characters from the preceding books appear in the ones to follow - so far. I don't usually read books in a series one right after the other, but since these are short and I have the next two I probably will continue until finished. That fact should make it evident that I like the books, author, characters and storyline. I'd recommend it for anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries, series, romance (yes, there is a bit) and humor.
Bekki is seeing Nick on a regular basis and things are going all pretty well. She stops by the bakery after the salon closes so that she can pick up a birthday cake for Sammy. When she goes to pick up the cake she finds herself walking in on another mystery.
Nick it shocked how Bekki is able to figure out "how it happened" to close cases. Bekki, Sammy and Nick rekindle their high school friendships at Sammy's birthday celebration.
