Rate this book
More than two years after the unexplained plague killed every other male mammal on the planet, the two exceptions - aspiring escape artist Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand - have traveled across the remains of the U.S. with biochemist Dr. Allison Mann and goverment operative Agent 355 to Dr. Mann's lab in San Francisco, where she managed to finally isolate the source of their immunity.

Unfortunately, that source is within Ampersand's body, which was last seen disappearing under the arm of a mysterious Japanese mercenary. Now, accompanied by 355 and Dr. Mann, the last man on Earth has embarked on a new and even more hazardous journey - following Ampersand's trail across the Pacific, where danger threatens from below as well as above the waves.

Two years have now passed since the plague struck, and Dr Allison Mann is pretty sure that the source for male human immunity is trail across the Pacific! Pirates ahoy! Everytime I feel that you know where this series it takes another turn I just never saw coming! Great stuff! 8 out of 12.

Pirates! Submarines! Australian Aboriginal magic!

The mostly land-based adventures of the last man on earth takes to the high seas. Deception, corruption, and sea-sickness all highlight this next volume of Yorick’s story.

In general I have enjoyed this series and this time was no exception. The story continues to be unique and interesting. This volume was action packed and had a lot of information to advance the story. Also, some of the theories about what would happen in a post-apocalyptic world like this are touched on throughout. Perhaps it is not super-deep (I have seen some reviews complain about that), but it is entertaining none-the-less!

The art continues as it has with the early volumes. I am very okay with this. The more traditional comic book look of the art compliments the story well so there has been no need to change what works. I often find graphic novel series changing artists several issues in, I am glad that was not the case here.

If you are a Brian K. Vaughn, Post-Apocalyptic/Dystopian fan, and/or action/adventure graphic novel fan, I think you will find a lot in this series to interest you.

Girl on Girl sees 355 and Dr Mann have a brief tumble, and Yorick have a brief meltdown when he walks in on them.
Be cool, dude. Be cool.

description

Meanwhile, Yorick once again punches far above his weight class and boinks the hot captain of the ship they've bordered in order to chase down Ampersand and the ninja that took him.

description

There's a lot here that I thought was wacky, but I was really rolling my eyes when the captain The characters' motivations in this story are all mind-boggling to me.
Part of me can't believe this is the same guy who wrote Saga.
Then again, I can still see a glimmer of that amazing writing in Y because I'm flipping the pages so easily, and I literally can't connect with any of the characters.
This is such a well-loved series that I feel alone on this little island of indifference.

From the title to the swordplay to the sophomoric dialogue, this volume plunges Y: The Last Man into cloyingly amateurish territory. Characterization suffers at the behest of sexual antics and cartoonish plots (pirates? Really?). This is the first volume where I found myself skimming the dialogue and panels to just get through scenes. This doesn’t match up with any of the tones from previous volumes, and it makes every unbelievable aspect of the story much more annoying (from a woman getting her wrist smashed with a crowbar and holding a gun seconds later, to government spies onboard international cargo carriers), while simultaneously making creative twists seem too implausible to have the proper effect (Sydney Opera House becoming a squatter’s den). If the characterization and tone were more competent, Vaughan might have pulled this off, but high seas adventure did not jive with the scope of the stories from the last five books of the series. I'm crossing my fingers for things to rebound in the next volume, because this has been too good to die with a whimper.

Magical boat ride. :)

This volume isn't so much edifying as it was adventuresome. Stowing away, getting involved in boat intrigue, drug smuggling, Australian navy, blood, death, and destruction. But what really is interesting about this one is the characters. There's something really fascinating about that captain. What an odd duck. :)

And the last bit? The one about Beth still in Australia? What is she ON? Crazy! :) :)

In this installment, Yorick and the gang are heading to Japan on a cruise ship that's been retrofitted into a freighter. Dr. Mann and Agent 355 gets a little closer and they all find out the boat they're on isn't as friendly as it seems.

The forward momentum is slowing a bit but things are still moving along. This volume wasn't as action packed as the others but it's the first glimpse of Beth in Australia that we've had a in while. The dialogue is still as punchy as every and the look of the series is still consistent. Yorick and 355 display more character growth. They've come a long way in the past six volumes.

So, a lot happens in this volume. Unfortunately, it's the first collection that probably deserved a little less than 4 stars. If not for the incredible ending, I would probably give it a 3-3.5.

Vaughan explores a little of what Yorick's girlfriend is up to in Australia and how she's coping with the plague. We're treated to an excellent dream sequence where Beth .

The only thing I didn't like was the ridiculous subplot with pirates and the Australian navy trying to stop them. Also, I wasn't a fan of Yorick hooking up with another girl. He seems to mention Beth less and less, which of course, could indicate that he finds it hard to believe that she's still alive and still looking for him. However, with the ending provided, we're being prepped to think that Yorick and Beth will meet eventually.

I'm going to be very sad when this series ends.

Artık serinin sonuna doğru yaklaşıyoruz. 6 gitti, 4 kaldı.

Kız Kıza özelinde konuşacak olursak bana biraz hızlı bitti gibi geldi. 355'i örgü örerken görmek iyiydi, Dr. Mann'ın "Ne örüyorsun, tüfek kılıfı mı?" espirisi daha da iyiydi. Yüz ifadeleri çok başarılı çizilmiş. Sonundaki mini bölümde de bir önceki kitapta yine tek bölümlük başlayan Beth'in hikayesi ileriki kitaplarda konunun başka yerlerden de ele alınacağına kanıt sanki.

Herkese keyifli okumalar!

Technically, this volume wasn't probably any worse than the previous volumes in this series, but for whatever reason, I just wasn't as into it as I have been. I think that one of the things that's sort of been bothering me about this series is perfectly explained by one of the characters in this volume:

"It figures. An entire planet of women, and the one guy gets to be the lead."

In that way, this title isn't really any different from, say, Dances with Wolves or the Last Samurai, where instead of being a story about Native Americans or Japanese, it's about a white male interacting with native Americans or Japanese. In the same way, this isn't a story about women, it's about Yorick interacting with women. You add to it the fact that, despite all his strengths are a writer, Vaughan's woman still occasionally sound like a male writing female dialogue (example: The rooftop dialogue between Yorick and his fiancee toward the end of this volume), and something about this title just never quite seems right.

That ongoing complaint aside, there is some good stuff in this issue, especially in the first two thirds, which focuses on Yorick, Mann and 355's trip across the Pacific. Vaughan does a great job of setting up a conflict in which its difficult to really say which side is right and which is wrong. When I focus on that aspect of this title, I really enjoy it.

this thing is getting soap operatic. now that yorick had sex once, he keeps on hooking up with people. every woman who learns he was engaged (which he wasn't) rather than just having a girlfriend is all like, oh, I never would have hooked up with you, last man on earth, if I had known you were *engaged* instead of just in a relationship. also, agent 355 once said she loved yorick and has tried to walk that back ever since. now she hooks up with the doctor, and yorick walks in on it and gets all jealous and weird. even though she is not one of the women he's been hooking up with.

meanwhile a world of only women is apparently the most violent of all possible worlds. there are guns, submarine torpedos. when the patriarchy suddenly vanishes apparently our priority as women is to just continue on trying to solve problems with violence. not working together to try to get civilization back online, nope. who cares about that.

apparently sydney opera house becomes a heroin shooting gallery. that's interesting.

and yorick just isn't likeable. he's dumb. he's juvenile.

but unlike the fables collections, these are quick reads, so I will finish the series and see how it ends.

The quest for Ampersand, Yorick's kidnapped pet monkey, continues....

Previously, in Y:The Last Man, we learned that the key to the male-pocalypse wasn't Yorick, the last man, but his little pet Ampersand. It turns out that Ampersand's stereotypical habit of flinging his own poo was of some benefit to Yorick because in that excrement was an antidote to whatever killed off all other males on the planet.

So, monkey shit, good. Japanese scientist who kidnapped Ampersand, bad.

This installment finds 355, Dr. Mann, and Yorick on a cargo ship, heading for the Far East. Trouble is, this ship is, unbeknownst to Yorick and company, shipping opium throughout the world. Hard on its heels is an Australian submarine -- piloted by women, of course -- intent on stopping its trade of mind destroying drugs to the Aussie populace.

Meanwhile, Yorick's fiancee/girlfriend Beth is having a transcendental walkabout in Australia's outback.

Solid addition to the ongoing storyline without as much emphasis on Yorick's weird sexual hangups, and more action: battles at sea, etc. Also, interesting insight into Yorick and Beth's relationship, namely the uneven nature of their dynamic (with, not surprisingly, Beth being the adult in the dynamic). And, yeah, some brief girl-on-girl as Mann and 355, almost get "busy." (With Yorick playing agent-interruptus.)

A further installment in the adventure of Yorick - the last man - and his two traveling companions, who are hoping to reach Japan and hopefully work on a cure for the disease that has killed off all males on Earth. The dialog as usual was superb - always snappy and timely, and the drawing was excellent as well. I just thought this volume wasn´t as fast-moving as the prior installments, that it somewhat dragged along, with the plot twists almost canceling each other out, until the denouement. I thought Kilina´s instant acceptance of Yorick and his friends somewhat far-fetched; rather, I would imagine a pirate boat captain would have tried to at least superficially verify their story. Still, the book was exciting and I´m certainly looking forward to the next installment.

The title alone says it all - more garbage, more Yorick having sex with random women, more him saving the day despite all logic to the contrary, and of course two women having sex for no apparent reason hence the condescending and homophobic title. You also gotta love a white male author using a black female character to express his own issues with anti-racist ideas. What an asshole. I really can't read this crap any more, I'm just gonna read wikipedia to find out how it ends.

Cruise ship pirates? An attacking submarine? Flashy excursions into lesbianism? Espionage that Agent 355 doesn't know about? C'mon, that's worth savoring!

True, Girl on Girl is by far the most ridiculous volume in the Y the Last Man series, but does that mean it has no value? I wouldn't jump to that conclusion, or merely write off this sea adventure as one note or immature for its sexuality. The story is simpler here, but I'm fine with taking a break from the thornier issues Vaughan has set up over the last two volumes. And Girl on Girl is nothing like the stall-out of book two, or the less captivating plot line of book three.

Dealing with pirates on the way to Australia, in some ways, even manages to progress Yorick's acceptance of his comedic survival, just another neat trick of Vaughan's. As a writer, he proves again and again that the most violent scenes, or the most seemingly innocuous encounters mean a lot more in a devastated world, and show the reader what could lie ahead for our ragtag team.

Plus, pirates! Who doesn't love pirates?

This volume got back in the game for me. Yorick, 355, and Dr. Mann have managed to board a ship headed out to Japan so they can search for Ampersand.

Unfortunately, it looks like some horny, teenage boy got a hold of this volume sometime before I did and ripped out several sections of this book, pages I assume contained naked women. I can only infer that Yorick, for the second time in the volume, had sex, this time with the captain of the ship and Dr. Mann and 355 somehow got it on, how this came about I don't know because of the missing pages. There were several other sections missing, but these were probably the two bigger plot evolvements to this volume.

The ship has a cargo of heroin and is being tracked by a submarine. The submarine has sent Rose onboard as an undercover spy. She will play a key role in the next volume(s).

Other things going on in this volume: there is a flash update on what's become of the Israeli women; we see how Yorick and Beth met; Beth is being held hostage by a tribe of Aborigine women.

Well, this volume was a bit mellowed down from the previous ones, but when you have invested so much in a series, a small dull moment must never bring you down.

A lot does not happen in this novel, as Yorrick and company hitchhike a ride to Japan on a ship.

Below is my review from the first re-read, on the second re-read nothing much has changed and I still love the series and loving the experience of going through the world as well. So let's go on and Keep on Reading.

My re-read through the amazing series is going well and I am glad that I took a long enough time to reread that I kinda forgot almost everything except for a few details. The main story arc of this volume is set on a boat traveling towards Japan and of course, things happen after all how can they not happen when the last man on the earth is found the hell is going to be broken. And one issue focuses on Beth and Yorick's moments. So then let's keep on reading.

One of the best Comic Series. This Series is the story of the last man on earth. Last pair of males on earth he and his monkey. All the other males of all the species are dead at a time.

I have always loved comics, and I hope that I will always love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics or Diamond Comics or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on the international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I can. I Love comics to bit, may comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just Keep on Reading.

I had felt that the issues were on a bit of a decline for a while, but this volume really showed me though. Throughout this volume, I couldn't find myself to care much and I really started to dislike Yorick. He's always been a little trying, but this volume was the icing on the cake for me.

I didn't care for the pirate plot. I thought that was weird and it honestly felt a little out of place to me.

The ending was nice though. I do wish we got more from what Beth is going through instead of the little snippets that we get.

First of all, i can’t believe i have 5 more books to litanize. This is taking me a lot more time than it should. A real, good reviewer could bang this out in an hour. Or maybe it would just seem like it only took them an hour because their prose is so breezy and in a nice tone of non-judgmentalism. I feel like i’m just spending time beating on a dead horse. But maybe this will dissuade at least one like-minded person from spending a few days blazing through this story. I don’t think it was a waste of time, but i kinda wish my graphic novels/sequential art/comic book reading extravaganza had begun with a bigger bang (either total crap or sublime enjoyment).

Lesbian pity sex, anyone? OK, i guess.

Best in-book illustrations of the series are the 3 pages of throwback panels that perfectly recreate the early days of pixelated 4-color superhero comic books! If you read any color comics in the 70s or 80s, you’ll enjoy this diversion amid the same-old same-old.

Crazy Hot Ladies Litany, part six
+ The crew of The Whale
+ most especially the ridiculously proportioned Captain Kilina, another almost-notch in Yorick’s belt (covers illustrator Carnevale missed the memo about her so his rear view isn't quite in sync)
+ second-most notable are brash ginger Harper and dopey giant Pearl, an homage to Of Mice and Men’s George and Lennie? or the Warner Bros cartoon duo of Ralph and George?
+ Undercover Aussie Rose Cohen (aka ol’ one eye)
+ the crew of the HMAS Williamson (submarine), including Captain Belleville. Apparently, the Australians have one OLD LADY also, and she’s a seaman. This visual diversity is seriously a welcome sight because every woman in this series looks pretty much the same.
+ Israeli Defense Forks *sigh* yes, again (i really don’t understand why they ever bothered with this subplot)
+ meanwhile in the Outback ... Beth is exposing a lot of skin while going on a drug-induced walkabout that tells the tale of her relationship with Yorick

YLM

English review: This volume isn’t as good as Volume 5. It’s fairly engaging and action-packed, but it does feel a bit like filler.
I found the approach to the topic of drugs quite interesting: with most DEA agents dead, and many women suffering from depression and hunger, the drug trade becomes increasingly profitable and a significant challenge for law enforcement.
I hope the series doesn’t continue as it did in the first four volumes with yet another endless journey, though it’s likely that’s what will happen. At the very least, I’m expecting the ending to be really strong.

This volume of Y: The Last Man just seemed "too easy." It seems in this volume that Vaughn was running out of story ideas and took the simple way out by using sex between two of the main characters. This series has been a bit of a disappointment for me; while reading this volume, I found myself rolling my eyes. I had joked with a friend while discussing this that either Dr. Mann and Agent 355 were both going to fall for Yorick or that they would fall for each other.

It seems that both have happened (at least to some extent).

I've been trying to get to the root of what's been irking me about reading this series - I think this volume finally revealed it. It's just fairly predictable. So far, it doesn't really feel like any of the main characters have actually been put in real danger. There haven't been any real twists and turns (like a main character dying). You know that the characters will get into trouble, but your can always rest assured that they'll get out of it. Considering the concept, this is just a little bit to "lite" of a version of this story for me. Am I quitting the series? Of course not... but I am anxious to finish now, but more so now because I'm over halfway into it already.

Yorick's odyssey continues, but it's not clear what this stop in his journey contributes. Another beautiful woman loved and lost? This series seems not to know whether it wants to be an intellectually honest thought experiment or simply an engaging comic book tale. Or maybe it is simply the latter, and I want more of the former.

Vaughan merely flirts with topics that merit serious attention. In a world with no men, what becomes of the line between heterosexuality and homosexuality? In a world with only one man, should we be surprised that the story revolves around a man and that all the women are supporting characters?

But even if the narrative doesn't explore these questions, I would expect it to reflect at least on its protagonists' curious actions and decisions in this volume. Maybe later volumes will revisit their choices here, but in too many ways this volume just seems to be marking time.

The title of this volume tells much about what the story is about: Girl on Girl. Well, there's the most obvious meaning to it, and I'll just leave it to your interpretation. It can also be girl versus girl, girl faction versus another girl faction, or girls above the sea and girls under the sea.

The sixth volume has a more straightforward and easier story than the previous five. It can pass as a filler episode. You can now see Vaughan recycling elements he used in the past volumes. The last issue in this volume deviates from the central theme. After all that has happened, that is a bit refreshing.
