Yorick Brown, the last man on Earth, finally makes it to San Francisco where his unbalanced sister, Hero, finds him seemingly succumbing to the male-killing plague after losing his still-unused engagement ring to the burqa-clad agents of the Setauket Ring. But is the ring really the key to his survival? And what does it have to do with the mysterious Amulet of Helene, which the Setauket leader is determined to take from Agent 355 by any means necessary. Collects issues #24-31.
Brian K. Vaughan is the writer and co-creator of comic-book series including SAGA, PAPER GIRLS, Y THE LAST MAN, RUNAWAYS, and most recently, BARRIER, a digital comic with artist Marcos Martin about immigration, available from their pay-what-you-want site www.PanelSyndicate.com
BKV's work has been recognized at the Eisner, Harvey, Hugo, Shuster, Eagle, and British Fantasy Awards. He sometimes writes for film and television in Los Angeles, where he lives with his family and their dogs Hamburger and Milkshake.
Y makes it to Cali, only for his now seemingly obviously unbalanced sister, Hero, to thrust him into dire personal jeopardy after the attack of the Setauket Ring! Y believes what they took from him kept him immune from the calamitous plague, but is that true? The Setauket Ring also want something from Agent 355. With the real antagonists making bigger moves the wider story is slowly beginning to be revealed. Some seriously competent long-form storytelling in this series! 8.5 out of 12 2017 read
The last few volumes of this series have left me feeling lukewarm. But, this volume brought it all back to the enjoyment I found in volume one. Action, humor, mystery and all of it clicking with the perfect flow to keep me engaged. I am loving it!
The artwork continues to impress. I have seen a few graphic novel series where the quality of the art seems to drop off. It's like they feel they don't have to try as hard once you are already engaged. The best analogy I can think of is how you can switch to well booze and cheap beer after you have a good buzz because you don't notice the difference. Well, I have been noticing a difference and I am so glad this series has not been letting it slide.
Strong, engaging story - check
Fantastic artwork - check
Oh, and did I mention cliffhangers galore? This is definitely a story I will be sticking with!
Very readable but it's still not as awesome as I had been led to believe. Though you do finally find out a bit more about what makes Hero tick. Her character arc takes a turn towards potentially not being an asshole by the end of it. I'm still not a fan of Hero, though. A lot of women have shitty stuff happen to them and they don't end up being crazy rage monsters who target innocent people.
Yorick gets busy with Beth 2.0 - a pretty blonde who gets all of Yorick's geeky references and has been taking care of a Catholic church. Is she actually still a Catholic after this apocalypse nonsense? If so, how? It seems as though she was put in here to show Yorick that other Beth isn't/wasn't all that special. Maybe? I don't know. However, it seems like he's on track to screw his way across the ocean to find his true love. Although, he's so annoying that it's a good thing he's the last man on earth or he'd never get laid.
Is the ring that Yorick was planning to give Beth the reason he survived the plague?! Or is the plague caused by the artifact that 355 took at the beginning of the story?! Are we finally getting some answers? I fucking hope so...
The big plot churner is that a ninja grabs Ampersand and that sets everyone off on another journey. Because that's what this story needed. A ninja monkey-napping.
Not in love with this, but hopefully it's going somewhere good.
And I wouldn't have made it this far without the support of my buddy reader, Alexander. Cheers
Two years, a trip from the east coast to the west coast, and multiple murders later, Yorick finally gets laid.
I know this doesn't seem like much of a milestone, but come on. It's been two years and he's the only man alive in a whole world full of horny women and it's THIS GUY who's being faithful to someone he was proposing to over the phone when everyone started dying who is left to repopulate the planet? She's on the other side of the world and it took him a month to get out of NYC!
Sometimes you just have to say no to love and start repopulating the planet, dude.
Other than that, this was a pretty exciting volume with a few surprises and a lot more bloody action as the nuts come out to play. :) Oh, and we think we actually know what caused the gendercide. :)
Oh my gosh, am I still reading this series? Yes, yes I am. And, psh, I’m only half-way through. I think it’s time to do a little cost/benefit analysis and make some decisions. Continue reading, hoping for a revival, hoping that the last two books were just mediocre anomalies? Or cut my losses and say farewell to Yorick and the gang before I sink any more of my hard-earned duckets into a story that seems to be devolving with each consecutive volume. Shit. I think I’m going to have to stick it out and hope for the best.
I’m going to forgive you the sins of books 4 & 5, Vaughan, but if 6 isn’t a vast improvement, we might need to have THE TALK.
The premise of this volume was so stupid I wanted to gouge out my eyes. (It was like the finale of Lost. Seriously? .)(oh, and here’s Hurley reading a copy of Y The Last Man)
And the dialog was so pedestrian it was laughable (It’s at the corner of FUCK YOU and GO TO HELL!; Don't do it, this is a stupid place to die...), but for whatever reason, I’m still intrigued. Go figure. It's a goddamned train wreck but I can't look away. I’m just praying to sweet tiny infant baby jesus that the story gets better. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
This series continues to be so incredibly strong, I can't recommend it enough.
In this collection, we find out more about Hero as she struggles to "deprogram" herself from her past as a member of The Amazons. Also, Yorick meets another woman who shares the same name as his missing girlfriend, Beth, and establishes an instant connection.
Probably the biggest part of The Ring of Truth is that we found out why Yorick and Ampersand survived the plague. Well, sort of. We're still unaware of what caused it so it could only be a guess on the part of Dr. Mann. I was sort of satisfied with the revelation; not blown away. If anything, it makes me a little weary of what originally caused it. I hope I'm not let down.
Damn. These are so good. I don't want to read them all in a go but I just can't top reading them. Will have to pick up Vol. 9 and 10 on Friday since those are the only ones I am missing.
If you guys haven't started this series yet started now. this series just gets more and more intense.
In the fifth volume of the saga of the last man alive, Yorick, Dr. Mann, and Agent 355 finally make it to San Francisco. Yorick gets some but loses more.
This volume had some twists. Yorick meets another Beth, loses his Beth's ring, and people are after Ampersand, who may just be the key to saving humanity. BKV and Pia Guerra continue pushing the series forward. We're now at the halfaway point and I have no recollection what happens in the future so the thrill ride continues. Yorick and the gang continue developing as characters and exploring new corners of the new world. Fun stuff.
I was really surprised by volume 5. I've gone through 4 already and no improvement was in sight (you might have noticed that I was a tiny bit annoyed by Yorick).
At the very start we see Yorick walking into a church, blaming God for the disaster, calling him a fucking asshole. He came to repent for killing a girl (ends up sleeping with Beth II). Usually, I'd rant at this point about what a miserable shit he is, but he says himself: I combine the worst attributes of the adolescent boys who teased them (women) and the middle-aged husbands who left them. He's being bitter about himself at this point. It's not funny anymore.
I said I'm not ranting about how he slept with Beth No. II. [I disapprove of it but] I did love how Beth II was representing Eve (and/or Snake) to lead (I'm not gonna say lure regardless of what a weak character he has)Yorick astray (into what she wants, which is just a lil bit of sewks).
[art is still superb]
Yorick: Jesus, I came here for forgiveness...but now I've just got more shit to be sorry for.
Reading on, we see a blonde-haired rotting corpse just as our story shifts to Australia for us to see what happened to Beth.
In this volume, the story just blasts through it, so much tension, so many complete turnsarounds in the events. Some write that the story is rushed but I like it fast-paced like this, event at the expense of some details being left out, left to the reader to figure them out and fill the gaps.
What I also loved is some display of Yorick's escapism artist skills and finally a funny scene where he pretends to be God :D
What left me undone is that Vaughn reveals to us what was the cause of the plague in the middle of the story (vol. 5/10!). Now what? Must read on!
The second re-read is going on just fine and here we go again, this is a favorite series and it's a pleasure to enjoy the story once again and maybe I would read this again in a couple more years so then let's go and Keep on Reading.
Like I have been repeating in front of all the previous reviews of this series, this is my second time reading this series and I plan on doing the same to the few other series like Preacher and Transmetropolitan, etc. This volume contained three story arcs and all three were good and the third arc was the one where the volume took its name from.
Love it. This Series is the story of the last man on earth. Last pair of males on earth he and his monkey. All the other males of all the species are dead at a time.
I have always loved comics, and I hope that I will always love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics or Diamond Comics or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on the international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I can. I Love comics too bit, may comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just Keep on Reading.
English review: I don’t know what others think, but I absolutely love the movie references Yorick makes throughout the story. Initially, I gave Volume Four four stars, but after reading this one, I realized it would be unfair to give both volumes the same rating when I enjoyed this one so much more. In my reviews of "One Small Step" and "Safeword", I complained about two things: first, it seemed unrealistic that women still hadn’t managed to restore societal order after so much time; second, I was getting tired of the endless road trip. I wanted the story to move in a different direction, and now I’ve pretty much gotten everything I wished for. Yorick, 355, and Dr. Mann (who, by the way, irritates me—she always seems sarcastic and exudes an air of superiority) finally make it to the lab, and we’re given a possible explanation for Yorick’s immunity. It’s not a particularly satisfying explanation, but there’s still a lot of mystery, and, in my opinion, the explanation isn’t entirely definitive. Plus, society is beginning to regain some semblance of order, which is refreshing. I also appreciated that we got In this volume, Yorick . So far, this is my favorite volume, and I hope it won’t stay that way.
The last half gets 3 stars. First part gets 1 star. I had to stop reading this at the beginning. It was so blasphemous I had to put it down. Not my cup of tea and made me a little sick to my stomach to have read it. After that, I had a hard time enjoying the rest of the book. I don't like reading blasphemous material, and I really don't like reading stuff that's written purely for the act of being blasphemous. Why go there? It added nothing to the story and could just as easily have not been in the book, even if this was the first time Yorick finally gets with a woman.
In this volume, the group is finally at the lab. Dr. Mann finds the reason Yorick survived the plague. A group that has separated from the Culper ring is after an amulet 355 found in Vol. 1. A ninja warrior is after Ampersand. And we find out what's happened to Hero in the meantime and a little about her past. Has she gone good ?
Pet peeve: Why does 355 keep referring to Yorick as 'Rick? I feel his name is carries too much weight in this story for it to be cut down to something as common as 'Rick.
Two stars only because the last part redeemed it self.
This is issue was AMAZING! Everything you ever loved about Brian K Vaughan is in this. Good plot, great character development, crazy action, fantastic plot twists and reall funny as well. Apart from the first one this is probably my favourite volume yet! (Also what happened with Beth? Give me MORE!!! And once gain: not cool Yorrick, not cool)
So far this series has more been about the characters and less about the WHY and that's been great so what does this arc offer? More of the same good character goodness.
World: The art has been great so far and it's just as good as it was before so nothing to report. The world building here is actually quite substantial this time around. With the other ring, the ninja, the church and also the stuff with Mann there is certainly a lot of world building. It's still a step behind the focus of character building but this is a big chunk here, especially with Amperstand. Good stuff!
Story: It's great, it's paced well and the story keeps me interested in the characters and what they are going through. There are actually 3 stories here and all three are good, I liked the church story and also the Amperstand one but the middle story with Hero is not bad also. The two great ones are strong and meaningful, and the Hero story is a bit choppy but also good. I wish that we had one more issue for her story but I have a feeling we will be getting more of that soon. I don't want to say anymore as this story is a wonderful experience and going in with no knowledge is the best way to read it.
Characters: Yorick and his change is great, it's been slow and it makes sense. The people that he meets really allow for this character to grow and become even more real and deep. I really like the what Vaughn has done with 355 and Mann also slowly making them just as important as Yorick. It's good and it's deep and realistic, it's good.
I really like this series it's fun and interesting and full of good character goodness. Read it!
Örneğin Amerika'daki Beth Avustralya'daki Beth için "Şimdiye kadar kim bilir kaç kadın aşağılarına inmiştir" diyor ve açıkça Met At Work'un Down Under şarkısına atıfta bulunuyor. Zira zaten Avustralya için de Land Down Under denir.
Serinin sanırım 192 yerinde "A***a koyayım" yazılmış.
Tongues of Flame (#24-25). California! And though this is another short story that only features Yorick, Vaughan manages to make it feel entirely important and tense. Plus, there's some great character study for Yorick, growing out of the previous story, and a nice, harrowing flashback [7+/10].
Hero's Journey (#26). It's great putting together the pieces of Hero's story, and perhaps giving us a little empathy for the insane monster that we saw in the first two years of this book. The dead-person-in-her-head trope feels really overdone now, but was probably fresher fifteen years ago. [6/10].
Ring of Truth (#27-31). It's middle story of Y: The Last Man, and Vaughan makes full use of it. He delivers us to San Francisco, at last, but more importantly he directly addresses the questions of what caused the plague and how Yorick survived. We get two of the artifacts from issue #1 center stage, and we actually get some questions answered. There's also some great action and a surprising change of focus. Overall, a very fulfilling story (7+/10).
After the rocky shorts that filled the last volumes, it feels like Y has its grove back.
I'm still reading these books, though the story is not entirely entertaining. I'm still not entirely sure why I should like any of the characters. They haven't developed any of them in this volume, and it's a surprise after learning a lot in the fourth. And if this "revelation" as to why Yorick and the monkey survived the plague is any indication, I'm not going to be very satisfied with what caused it. The "mystery" of the amulet of Helene was also not as satisfying to learn in accordance to all the build up it got. I ended this volume going, "So?"
But I suppose I shall continue on. I hate not finishing something.
Whole lotta stuff happening. Yorick learns that everything they say about Catholic girls is true, why it's a bad idea to eat canned food if the can is dented, and the value of monkey shit. Hero has an imaginary Amazon friend who tells her cray-zee shit. Agent 355 is still a bad ass. Ninja! Nutjobs in burkhas! And, oh, crap, has anyone seen Ampersand?
