In the fall of 1975, Scott Mitchell helped his college football team win the NCAA Division II national championship, and for a time, he became the most-celebrated person in the state of Colorado. Just one year later, he had managed to party his way out of football, out of college and out of the lives of most of his families and friends.
One cold snowy night, he is visited by the great secret 12-year crush and love of his life, Roni McIntyre. She helps him through the night, but then is gone. Fast-forward three months to March 1977. Now at a lower point than he was in December, he had enlisted in the Army. But after a miserable and humiliating moment in the barracks, the mailbag brings a letter from Roni.
In a stream of consciousness she tells him that she didn’t know what he’d done and where he’d gone and how much she missed him and how much the night in December had meant to her and even how much she now hated Earl Holliman and Darren McGavin because of the movie “Tribes.”
And Roni has her own demons, as past relationships have held her back from being able to trust. She is an also an artist -- who like Scott with his football career -- has lost her confidence and her hope.
Roni’s letter begins a correspondence of discovery between the two. They begin to realize how they both truly feel about each other and that more than either one ever believed, together they could still have their dreams. It won’t be easy, but they find out that together, there can be “forever.”
“Forever” is the first of three books that follow the lives of Scott and Roni through their journey of love, loss and hope.
