Kazune Kawahara (河原和音) made her manga debut at age 18 with Kare no Ichiban Sukina Hito (His Most Favorite Person). Also, while thinking of her manga, she often spaces out and brings grocery baskets home. Adores her nieces.
Second volume of maybe the most adorable shoji/romance manga I have read so far (which is not THAT much, but this one stands out for me). We have three central characters, Takeo, a 6'6", 265 pound guy who is all heart but not a likely romantic lead. He intervenes on behalf of (petite) Yamato who is being bothered by some guy on a train; she makes him a dessert to thank him, and she begins to like him. Takeo assumes she would prefer his typically gorgeous best friend, Sunakawa, but nope, Takeo and Yamato fall surprisingly in love, which creates some occasions for sweetness and comedy.
In this volume two roadblocks in their budding relationship occur; 1) Takeo has to be gone for a sumo wrestling tournament for a month, and 2) after planning a birthday for Yamato, Takeo has to be at Sunakawa's side as his dad has emergency surgery. You may wonder whether they weather these storms, but there ARE multiple volumes of this series. The relationships between each couple and between all three of them are sweet and fun, and there is some growing interest in just what might be the object of Sunakawa's affections.
I love this entire series, but this volume contains probably my favorite moment, where Sunakawa allows himself to be vulnerable, just for a moment, and Takeo is there for him to lean on. There are plenty of emotional high points throughout My Love Story!!, but in my opinion this is the height, and true crux of the series. Such a beautiful friendship.
The story mentions repeatedly how much other guys admire the protagonist, Takeo Goda, for his size and abilities. For instance, when the judo team captain is injured, the team immediately seeks out Goda to draft him as a substitute captain.
Gotta say, I get it. I totally admire Goda too, and hang on every page to see what amazing thing he'll do next. He's clumsy sometimes socially and physically, but his heart is huge and his commitment is never less than 100%, especially when it comes to standing by his friends.
Somehow, the second volume tops the first volume. It's got more chapters, and even included recipes for the sweets that appeared in the first. It also got a sports chapter that's as awesome as some sports manga I've read.
Yamato and Takeo are the sweetest, most heart-melting couple in all of shoujo manga, and the fact that they get together as early as the first volume so we have time to see them go through other relationship things is a wonderful divergence from shoujo manga norms.
Suna is the most relatable character I have every read in anything ever and I love him. It's super rare for my very asexual ass to identify with a character this strongly, especially in a romance story .
Let me just repeat what I said in my previous review: I can't get over this bromance! Hands down, it's my favorite part even though the romance is SUPER sweet, and absolutely love it too!
But Sunakawa and Takeo have such an amazing friendship and LOVE seeing it on page! Why can't we have more of this kind of friendship in shoujo manga?! I mean, not saying we don't have it, BUT they have such a deep friendship that I don't think I've seen something quite like this in another story.
Suna continues to be the MVP because I LOVE how he fully supports his best friend and "embraces" being the third wheel. I love that Takeo doesn't get jealous when he finds out Yamato went to visit him because he trusts Suna that much. I love how Suna gave 100% of his all to helping Takeo have the best first date.
Honestly, the list could get keep going! He's just a really incredible best friend and SO happy he's in this manga!
Takeo and Yamato have the sweetest of relationships and also love how much Takeo loves and cares for Yamato! One of my favorite parts is when an old friend sort of looked down on Takeo because he now has a girlfriend, therefore he would definitely lose a certain sports match Takeo was participating in. However, Takeo was quick to say that having a girlfriend is amazing and was adamant that he wanted Yamato to sit front and center during his match. I have to second Suna when he said that Takeo can really make someone swoon! (Also, can we just say that Takeo has zero shame and has to be one of the most confident high school guys I have ever read about!)
There are so many wonderful moments in this second volume that I found myself laughing often, smiling, and just having a really really good time! (Also the ending was completely hilarious!!)
So I pretty much cried a little at every chapter. Everything about this manga hits me right in the heart. I love Takeo and Yamato. I love Takeo and Sunakawa. I love Takeo and Yamato and Sunakawa. I love how supportive they are of each other. I especially love that romance doesn't shaft friendship or vice versa, and that Sunakawa actively helps Takeo's relationship with Yamato. I also kinda love the work uniform Takeo wears for his part-time job ♥ I'm so very glad I am still reading this series!
This was AMAZING. I love the dynamic of friendship between friends and romantic interest. It's nice to see such a healthy relationship displayed for all readers. They're just so cute and I love that they are willing to sacrifice to make sure they are happy as well as their significant other. I won't go into much detail because this is the second volume but just know that I truly enjoyed every single page of this volume and I can't wait to get to the next one.
This series is quite cute and fun, though nothing terribly earth shattering. That's not a bad thing though. S ok sometimes you just want something cute, fun, and easily consumable in between more deeper reading selections. The characters are all well-defined and likable, and while it treads a lot of familiar territory, it never feels contrived or lazy. It's a perfect little romance title for cozy reading.
Re-read 2021: Fun volume. Birthdays, judo, dates, and friendship, happy to see more people accept Takeo. The I love you/I love him/her, were a bit too much at times especially since they just know each other! Not going to write a longer review because Goodreads is being a broken mess again.
=================================
After book 1 I decided to look around and found out that Viz is bringing this lovely series out in English. You can't imagine my delight that I can buy these lovelies and hold them in my hands. So I have decided to buy these every time one comes out. Argh, the wait will be excruciating though. The next is coming in 2 months, just after my birthday!!
This was another wonderful book. Not only do we have more awkwardness, romance and some character stuff, we also got a story going on. Sunakawa is acting weird, and Takeo soon finds out why. I really liked the addition of this to the story, as it gives more depth to the characters, and also shows how good a friend Takeo is. How he gives up a lot to be with his best friend in times of need. And not only for his friend, he is also willing to help others when they are in need, no matter how mean or rude they were just minutes ago.
Takeo was, like always, an awesome character. I already loved him from the first page, but with each new page I love his character more and more. Yamato is really blessed to have such a wonderful (albeit awkward) boyfriend. I loved how his looks are changing (I already noticed it, but then I read the interview in the back of the book). From square to more round.
Yamato, ah she is so wonderful. She is a great girl and so in love. Defending her boyfriend, telling her friends how great he is. And she is considerate. She doesn't mind her boyfriend to be away (sure she misses him a lot), she supports and cheers for him from the sidelines. Making sure he has enough food. And during the birthday party and what happened there. I was amazed that, sure she minded, but she didn't go into tears or cried. Instead she motivated him to go do what he needed to do.
I was a bit surprised with the cover, considering that both Sunakawa and Yamato have more blondish/brownish hair and not black, so I was wondering if the artists changed something, but it seems to be only the cover that is a bit off. Probably has to do with the clothes and the old-fashioned stuff.
I loved that VIZ added recipes and interviews to the manga, it made it even better and more fun.
All in all, this manga keeps getting better and better. Not only in romance, but also in comedy and also in drama and backstory. I would really recommend this one to everyone. And I will be waiting for the next volume to pop up.
I've had the pleasure of reading Vol. 1 & 4, and now find myself backing up to fill in the blanks. This is such a sweet, naive and innocent love story between a big burly, not so attractive teenager and a quie, cute petite girl. They are madly in "innocent" love with each other and in this volume are starting to learn what being boy/girl -friend is all about. Caring, respect, honesty and trust. This volume is quite episodic with some hilarious scenes especially involving Takeo but there is heart here too and it's just so sweet.
Takeo and Yamada's sweet love continues. This time, Takeo promises her to spend all day with her on her birthday, but ends up not being able to, since Suna's father is having surgery that day. I thought it was sweet that Yamada didn't get upset with him, when he told her that he had to go.
Just as good as the first volume. The friendship between the boys was phenomenal to see here, and in general there was a moment that described friendship so well. And of course the romance continues to be lovely! I adore these characters!
I've read the first volume, but I found the second volume more to my liking when it included the recipes of the sweets that Yamato baked in the first. The way Takeo scarfed them up made it seem that those sweet could be tasty and having the recipes would be a good way to find out for myself.
