Getting In the Gap: Making Conscious Contact with God Through Meditation

Rate this book

The practice of meditation takes us on a fabulous journey into the gap between our thoughts, where all the advantages of a more peaceful, stress-free, healthy, and fatigue-free life are available, but which are simply side benefits. The paramount reason for daily meditation is to get into the gap between our thoughts, and make conscious contact with the creative energy of life itself. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer explains the soul-nourishing meditation technique for making conscious contact with God, which the ancient masters have told us about.

You have the potential to be an instrument of the highest good for all concerned and to be a literal miracle worker in your own life. No person, government, or religion can legitimately claim to do this for you. “In fact,” says Dr. Dyer, “I agree with Carl Jung who said, ‘One of the main functions of formalized religion is to protect people against a direct experience of God.’” When you master getting into the gap and staying there for prolonged segments of meditation, and experience what you bring back to the material world, you will know your answer to the question: “Why meditate?”

Wayne Walter Dyer was an American self-help author and a motivational speaker. Dyer earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and Philosophy, a Master’s degree in Psychology and an Ed.D. in Guidance and Counseling at Wayne State University in 1970. Early in his career, he worked as a high school guidance counselor, and went on to run a successful private therapy practice. He became a popular professor of counselor education at St. John's University, where he was approached by a literary agent to put his ideas into book form. The result was his first book, Your Erroneous Zones (1976), one of the best-selling books of all time, with an estimated 100 million copies sold. This launched Dyer's career as a motivational speaker and self-help author, during which he published 20 more best-selling books and produced a number of popular specials for PBS. Influenced by thinkers such as Abraham H. Maslow and Albert Ellis, Dyer's early work focused on psychological themes such as motivation, self actualization and assertiveness. By the 1990s, the focus of his work had shifted to spirituality. Inspired by Swami Muktananda and New Thought, he promoted themes such as the "power of intention," collaborated with alternative medicine advocate Deepak Chopra on a number of projects, and was a frequent guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

This is one fantastic meditation cd. I have only been reading Dr. Dyer's work and meditating for a short time and this guided meditation helped me achieve a level of relaxation and renewed energy that I would not have believed possible.

I also feel that I have been able to make conscious contact with my Source using this technique. I also used it to perform the manifesting test as described by Dr. Dyer on his Power of Intention CD by visualizing and contemplating on a simple object, then had it "appear" in my life only hours later by mere coincidence. (Coincidence meaning, two things that fit perfectly together) What was so remarkable about the experience was not that the object appeared in my life or that it appeared so quickly, but that my appreciation for it and how it made me feel by just looking at it could only be described as "spiritual". I think that's the whole point, right? Not merely getting things to come into your life, but appreciating things that most likely are already in our lives or in our environment that we just don't "see".

I highly recommend this book/cd and recommend using it every day without fail. Keep an open mind, and then use the techniques without the cd at bed time or whenever. It really does quiet the mind.

This meditation CD, AKA YouTube video, was my first introduction to Japa meditation. I love Wayne’s passion and his love for his practice. You can tell it’s very sacred and special to him. Based on the YouTube comments, there are many people who agree. I’m sure I will dive deeper into this technique down the line.
For me, the premise of getting into the gap is similar to the practice of Transcendental Meditation, where you repeat a mantra over and over in place of your typical thoughts. Whatever works best for you to escape your mind and connect with the universe 0:)

This is a little book which comprises a meditation CD.

In this book Wayne explains how we can easily get into a meditative space by focusing on the gap between words. He illustrates this by using the first ten words of the Lord’s prayer, but I assume that any words would suffice.

When focusing on the gap we “say the name of God repeatedly” and doing this is called Japa. We are thus guided to say “ah” repeatedly. However, this is the first time I’ve heard it stated that “ah” is the name of God. On the meditation CD I assumed that the word being said was “om”, and later in the book Wayne quotes Patanjali as stating that “aum” is the name of God.

“When repeated as a mantra while in the gap, this sound keeps us in a prolonged state of conscious contact with our source.”

“The gap, or space between our thoughts, is where all creation and manifestation originate.”

Therefore, Wayne maintains that doing Japa and simultaneously
focusing on what we want enables us to manifest this.

First we should feel at one with God then focus on the sound of God and what we desire in our life.

Wayne says we “will begin to experience an overwhelming sense of bliss”. Though I do occasionally experience bliss and have previously often done so, as yet I have not experienced bliss while doing Japa.

Though I disagree with Wayne about “ah” being the sound of God, I appreciated this little book and the accompanying CD. The meditation is simple and easy and with practice it may enable you to manifest whatever you desire. Five stars.

Quick read. I enjoyed a number of thoughts that he shared. I also like the idea of using the words to The Lords Prayer to meditate and find that space in between the words. I liked the way he described that. I have not listened to the CD yet, but the book was ok...nothing fabulous.

A quick read about clearing your mind. I only purchased this book to get the free audio meditation that comes with it. His book The Power of Intention has all the same material as this book.

Best book I've read on meditation.
Started practicing using the Japa method and feel great.
Here are my takeaways:
THE GAP IS THE SPACE BETWEEN THOUGHTS!

Meditation helps tame the ego.

OUR THOUGHTS KEEP US FROM SILENCE!

Meditation nourishes the soul!

When a distracting thoughts surfaces, just NOTE IT AND USE ITS PRESENCE AS A REMINDER TO GO BACK TO THE GAP.

THE LORD'S PRAYER and use the space between each word for Japa (Ahhhh) to get in thr gap.

To start: Picture one word (such as our) and say it several times inside. Then say the next word (such as father) and say it several times. Then FOCUS ON THE SPACE BETWEEN THE 2 WORDS.

All man's miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone. - Pascal.

This short book on meditation was supposed to have an accompanying CD, but my library copy didn't have a CD. Perhaps it's the CD that makes all the difference, because the book itself wasn't anything spectacular. Dyer introduced a meditation technique called Japa which is basically the Om meditation used by Buddhists. Fully 25% of the book consisted of letters to Dyer about how his technique has changed their lives, which seemed more like a sales pitch than actual good info. There are better books out there on meditation; this one can be skipped.

The reason I gave this book three stars is because there was a meditation CD inside that is useful. The book itself has a short essay, some Q & A which might not apply to many people, and a print-out of the CD. I think all that could be in a short pamphlet and save the paper.

A quick read on meditation and its benefits as I explore this practice more. The Japa meditation really does help with stray thoughts. Enjoyed the guided meditation included on the CD which I was lucky enough to do in a very peaceful setting at a monastery.

I have been working with Jpap Mediatation using Dr Wayne's Meditations for Manifestations tapes but this seems to be an extra layer and hopefully the missing piece for my manifestations. Fingers crossed! An excellent little book though, pack full of information and guidance. Highly recommended.

I love Dwyer's books and this one is no exception to that rule. If you are looking to look at practicing Japa meditation, this book provides a great introduction to the practice.

I like Wayne Dyer but this book is very short and if you have the Hay House app, you can just listen to the meditations he describes.

(It is actually "Through the gap in the fence" but i could not find the book on this website)

I decided to read this book because it would not loose my attention span as it is full of short stories. It looked quite interesting. This book completes a book with short stories category on the bingo board. I liked the particular story called "Trapped" which is about a boy who hates school athletics day and describes it as a was scene with horrific scenes. I liked the story as it created a real picture in my mind but then quickly converted those images into a an athletics day scene which made the book more lively to me. The whole book on a whole was interesting but some stories like the one called "Thumb-Luv" which is a poem about texting, written in texting language (e.g. u instead of you, and omg instead of ohh my gosh. The poem didn't really make sense and did not hook my attention. I would recommend this book to others as it has also got some great stories in it, and are great for times when you don't want to read a whole book but want to just relax.

Don't be fooled by the small size and pretty picture on the cover - this is hard! I'm convinced its worth it. I see this as one of those things that is easy to learn but takes a lifetime to master.

Getting in the Gap makes sense, as does pretty much everything Dr. Dyer writes and my cognitive self jumped into this with full enthusiasm. Unfortunately, that cognitive self didn't want to be silenced throughout the medidation.

I'm extremely thankful that there was a CD included to assist with the meditation. It made a world of difference.

OK, I know I started off by saying it was hard (it is for me) but please don't let that scare you away. Many things that are worth doing are hard in the beginning. I'm looking forward to doing this over and over again until it is no longer hard. Give it a try. Maybe we'll meet in the gap.

I've been having trouble meditating lately, so... This book has a couple of pretty good suggestions for finding that space, but it's mostly peripherals. "Why meditate," testimonials from meditaters and the like. I haven't listened to the accompanying CD/download (Hay House didn't make it easy to acquire), but I have no doubt it is a useful aid.

Great read but....

Getting the digital version doesn't seem to get you the coveted CD for guided meditation. This saddened me and is the only reason that I gave this book four stars instead of five. Purchasers of the digital book should get a digital download of the CD. It is still worth reading this book!

I got this book based on his PBS special. IT was interesting, but I just couldn't get into the meditation CD. Although I did try. It is a good book and CD, but I think finding a mediation practice is individual, and this one just wasn't the one for me.

Short and simple book. The thrust - meditate and be in the space of stillness, the gap. The accompanying cd of meditations is wonderful! I've enjoyed Wayne Dyer's other books, and this one moves me forward in amazing ways. Ahhhhhhhhhhh!

A good read that prepares you for meditating with the inclosed CD (in my case). There were several candid testimonials and a few pages dedicated to facts and question. I'm about the proceed with the meditation using the CD, so I will have to update you later with the amazing results.

I was a little disappointed. I usually love anything written by Wayne Dyer. Guess I had expectations of it being a simple "how to" on meditation. For me it was not. Perhaps I'll find the accompanying CD more helpful.

This meditation was very simple to learn and surprisingly relaxing. I liked it.

The book included with the CD was very short but sweet. It had some inspirational stories and quotes from eastern masters. Good job, Dr. Dyer.
