Drug Use and Abuse

Rate this book
DRUG USE AND ABUSE takes an interdisciplinary approach in its coverage of current drug issues. It weaves psychological, historical, cultural, social, biological, and medical perspectives -- emphasizing the idea that a drug's effects depend not only on its properties, but also on the biological and psychological characteristics of its user. This theme is highlighted throughout, and is prominent in discussions of the individual classes of drugs, as well as in the chapters on pharmacology and psychopharmacology.

I had to read this whole thing for a university class so I'm counting it in my goodreads book challenge. It was rich in history, statistics, and current studies. It was one of the best textbooks I've ever read.

Decent introductory text for an undergraduate Drugs & Behavior course. Some of the information seemed a bit dated - especially related to stigmatizing terminology (e.g., abuse terminology rather than use terminology). I would like to see an updated version with less stigmatizing language. Additionally, more in depth information regarding models of addiction development & treatment would be great to have; however, I recognize that may be outside the scope of an introductory Drugs & Behavior class (perhaps better suited for an Addiction Treatment course or even graduate-level coursework). I also appreciated this text's frequent inclusion of current events as relates to drugs & behavior/society.

This book is incredibly boring. I kept falling to sleep reading it which is terrible because I had to read it to pass my class. There were some interesting parts, but it was mostly boring. It could have been so much more interesting to read. I looked for an audiobook version because I thought that might help me retain the information better, but it didn't exist. Someone needs to make these college textbooks available in audiobook format. Also, the price is ridiculous for a book this boring.

Awesome, insightful look into the biological, physiological aspects of use and abuse of substances. Highly recommended to anyone looking to get an in-depth look at the subject and the psychology around it.
