Madame Verona Comes Down the Hill is a really sweet story—at times very funny and at others achingly beautiful—that takes place in the fictional Flemish town of Oucwègne. It’s a story about life and death, and about the intense love Madame Verona has for her (late) husband, Monsieur Potter, her uncanny ability to attract dogs, and her desire to die at a time and place of her choosing.
Madame Verona was widowed at a young age. Her husband learned he was dying and, because he’d no longer be able to keep his wife warm in his arms, he went into the forest on the hillside next to their home and cut, split, and stacked enough wood to keep her warm all the days of her life. Once he’d finished this monumental task, he chose a tree and ended his life. Madame was devastated but, after much thought, decided she would stay in Oucwègne (much to the delight of the men in this female-devoid town), in their home on the hill high atop the town. And she remained forever faithful to Monsieur (much to the chagrin of the men in this female-devoid town). She and the dogs continued to go down the hill for supplies, to visit, and to watch the people, and then would climb back up towards home again. This continued for many, many years.
In all the years following his death, Madame could feel Monsieur’s presence everywhere and all around her. She liked to wear his clothing, she spoke to him with regularity, and reminisced about the beautiful music they'd played together. Monsieur played the cello; Madame accompanied him on the piano. She looked forward to the day his arms would surround her again. But on this day, as she pushed the final log into the fire—the last of the wood he’d lovingly stacked, that had once seemed inexhaustible—she decided calmly and with tranquillity that she and the dog would go down the hill one last time. As she began her descent, she looked back only to call the dog to 'come'. She knew they could not climb back up again.
I highly recommend this lovely short book—a novella, really, at less than 100 pages—that many of you could finish in a single sitting.
