Every one in a while, I just want to read a western. Sure the plot and the characters are pretty near identical in every story.. this is no exception, you can suss out the plot and exactly what happens before you're a quarter of the way through.

But Zane Grey is something, there's a reason his stuff is still around and in print nearly 100 years after he wrote it... his descriptions of the frontier west are really amazing... you can't help but picture things as you're reading.

Not high literature by any means, but any time you want to escape to the saddle and get in touch with your inner noble robber, this is the book!

In the secluded canyons of Robber's Roost, Jim Wales makes an effort to rescue the kidnapped Helen Herrick in the midst of fighting between two rival gangs. Written in the romantic style of the 1930s.

I was quite impressed with the first Zane Grey book I read. I picked this one because I found it for $1.99 on Bookbub. I was not led astray.

He is a great novelist and gives great insight into the American West and to the way we, as Americans think and act. It is interesting to see a view of America without political correctness and see it as it was and often yet is.

This book was a slow start. It shows a coming together of the American and the British cultures and also emotionally incomplete human beings who finally grow to become relatively normal in spite of the difficulties they have lived through.

This particular book built up steam as I read it, getting to be terribly hard to be put down by the end.

I loved it.

Not a fan of Westerns after reading this book.

This is the 1st time I have read a Western. Don't know if they are all like this one, but I found this one very hard going at times. Some of the prose was in Native American dialect which I at times found difficult to understand. This book seemed to miander on for many pages. Rescueing the kidnapped girl gave it some interest towards the end. I do have another Western in my library which I will read at a later date. If it is no better than this that will be Western Novels done for me. For an entertaining read NOT RECOMMENDED. Sorry.

Another Zane Grey classic western. What happens when one mixes the old west with a well off British man, a couple of bands of outlaws, and a British lady? Robbers Roost. This is an early anti-hero book, or more accurately, a reluctant hero book. Grey loves to play on the deep emotions of man and push his characters to the limits of human endurance. I would recommend this book to those who love to ready westerns, action stories, or those who have an appreciation for the outdoors. There's also a bit in here for the romantic types. The two lessons I gleaned from this is jealousy can be deadly if not kept in check. Chivalry, is another slow to boil killer.

Excellent, as all of Zane Grey's stories are. It's beyond me how a man can write such romantic stories of the old west, but we will be forever grateful that this man did. This story takes place mostly in the wilds of Utah. Jim Wall is our hero and he wins thru with both money and the girl. There are many editions of this book but the one I have is the Great Western Edition published by Grosset & Dunlap I believe in the early 50's.

Robbers Roost

This book was very in depth and very intense at times. It is full of raw emotions. Zane is a great story teller. Like Louis L’Amour his heroes are larger than life and have character.

Robbers Roost

This was a typical Zane Grey western story. Although I don't particularly care for Grey as a writer, his storylines are realistic and we'll thought out. Some of the words he uses are a turn off for me, however most like his stories and style.

Typical landscape painted for the mind as only Zane Grey can.
Also typical plot and narration drag out and the lack of action degrading into personal character musings leaves this reader disapointed.

Wyoming Man Not Seeking a Bride

Cowboy Jim which this story is about is about as Wild West as you can get but in a civilized way. Fast with a gun and quick with whit he falls in love in the strangest way. Great read. Big D

I liked the story, but Mr Grey certainly can get carried away with his descriptions of rocks.

Can there be anything better than reading Zane Grey around the campfire while camping at the Grand Canyon? I think not! Yes, this is a typical formulaic western by Grey, set in the American Southwest (near the Dirty Devil River in SE Utah). Loner cowboy with a vague and shady past meets beautiful woman new to the west and vulnerable. Cowboy saves the day, falls in love, overcomes tremendous odds brought by nature and evil men, kills a few bad guys and demonstrates outstanding shooting skills, and still has to be convinced by fair maiden that he is the worthy recipient of her undying love. Predictable, but enjoyable.

Jim Wale joins a gang of robbers who plan a job of robbing their boss and rustling his cattle. The job goes as planned but in the process, Jim falls for the boss's sister, and to make matters worse the game leader kidnaps her and then tells the gang, who had no clue that the kidnapping was going to happen. The story blossoms from there with death, double-crossing and more death to where only two survive.

My new guilty pleasure is Zane Grey. It's pretty guilty, and it's pretty good. This is one of my new favorites, maybe because the damsel is British? And the characters are good in this one--even the bad dudes are well drawn.

Outstanding!

In true Zane Grey style, you feel like you can see the scenery up close and personal. His description of the characters is remarkable so I felt like I knew them personally.

A little too much hillbilly English, but otherwise a pretty good western.
