In just a few months Harp Evans will be officially coming of age and graduating from high school. She will be free from the mother that never wanted her, the house that never felt like home, and the disappointment of the last seventeen years. What she doesn’t know is that her mother has been holding onto a secret that has the potential to derail her dreams and destroy her already faulty sense of self.
A self-proclaimed recluse, Harp spends most of her time practicing the cello, in the hopes of earning a full scholarship that will grant her freedom, but will also send her away from her best friend Connor Williams, who is becoming more than just a friend.
As revelations are made, will Harp still feel the same way about leaving everyone that cares about her behind? Or will she continue to pursue the life she’s been dreaming of, for as long as she can remember?
Cassie Shine released her debut young adult novel, Harp's Song in November 2013, finally finishing the short story she started in her college creative writing class … many, many moons ago. She has always been an avid reader and lover of music (yes, she was in the high school marching band). While she has a weak spot for all things teeny bopper especially boy bands, she also loves classical, country, rock and well, pretty much all music.
After living in St. Louis for more than ten years, she and her husband packed up a U-Haul and headed west. They currently live in Orange County, CA with their furry kids Finnegan and Molly.
I am going to start with what I loved. I loved Harp Evans. Her teen years were not normal, and for someone with her issues she was pretty well rounded. Her mother was the hardest character to read. I won't giveaway any plot secrets, as there are a few little minor things and then the big bam moment. Growing up in a home where there is sadness is bad enough, but Harp had lived with extreme hate. Her mother did things to abuse her physicaly and verbally. It was a very bold book in that way.
Her best friend Connor Williams is the great addition to the plot. He feels so bad for her. His parents, especially his Mother are the polar opposites. She seeks refuge in their home and is shocked that she is welcomed with open arms. It seemed to me they were loving, and not doing it to compensate for Harp's obvious emotional issues. I think they knew something big was going on and they hid it well. She really felt cozy and comfy with them.
Connor hid his feelings for Harp. He never lead on he cared other than acting like a brother. I wanted a little more from his parents. It seemed his mom was on board with them being together but until it happened she said nothing.
I loved the epiphany Harp has when confronted with her mothers true motives of hate. It was a real page turner from that point on. As I said there was a lot to like and a big thing like Connor to love!
I randomly saw this book pop up in my newsfeed on Facebook and I downloaded it because the book blurb looked interesting. What an outstanding read! I stayed up until 2:00 am finishing it. Couldn't put it down.
ARC was provided by the author/publisher via NetGalley in exchange for honest review.
To be honest, it's quite hard for me to decide whether I like this book or not. I think I have things I liked as much I didn't like.
When I requested it and while reading it, I thought it's a standalone, so I expected to get a whole full story. At some point, I can say it is a full story. There is a beginning, middle and ending that build Harp's story. However, I don't think the whole story build well. There is something off with the way it was written. The flow isn't smooth to me. And there are many things that feel like coming out of the blue. I do understand when Harp says that her mom changing feels so suddenly, I feel it too, but in a different way. I think the author didn't give me time to know both Harp and her mom. I only get description from Harp without really connect to her. Hence, it's quite hard for me to feel her. The same case happens to Alex Hamilton. It's too coincidence. He also appears and disappears so fast and out of the blue. Those things make me thinking that there are there just so Harp has something to trouble her life and a climax of the story while at the same time I can predict it from the beginning. In most part, I have to say that most of the things feel so fast and unbelievable. I didn't get time to connect to the characters while at the same time they starting to tell me what happen in their life. So I just read it without feel it and couldn’t buy it.
However, I liked the way the author builds Harp and her mom relationship after her "speech". As much as it isn't nice thing Harp does, I think it's close to reality. It's understandable and was quite emotional. I also like how she lets her lose herself and then learn from her mistake. I believe that sometime, it's best if we stand up from our mistake rather than we hold ourselves because people tell us to but then fall to pieces in the future.
And then the story ends, just to tell me that there is a sequel. I thought could those out of the blue things happen here because it will tell in sequel? Even if it is, I still feel the author can do much better than this one. I think I'm going to read Harp's next story, anyway.
Note: can someone tell me what ding dong girls is? Cheerleaders?
Cassie Shine is making her mark with her debut novel Harp's Song. It is both gripping and emotional. Harp's Song tackles some tough topics like abuse, neglect, and intimidation. Her storytelling is engaging and kept me turning page after page until the very end.
The relationship between Harp and her mother was really tough to read. There were just a few moments of direct interaction between them and they were filled with so much pain and fear. It was understandable that Harp avoided her mother and spent a lot of time away from home as possible to avoid the mental and physical abuse.
But Harp was lucky enough to have people around her that cared about her and her well being. She had people to turn when she it got really bad with her mom. There was another adult stepping in to fulfill the caretaker role that Harp's mom never accepted. This was something that I really liked about the story. Harp didn't keep all of her secrets hidden. She opened up to her best friend and his mom and accepted the help that they willingly gave her. She didn't have to figure it all out on her own.
I loved the reading about the friendship between Harp and Connor. Whether their relationship was platonic or romantic, it felt authentic. Their interactions made me smile quite a few times. It was easy to believe that they truly were best friends.
The story does have a resolve and doesn't end with a cliffhanger, but a follow-up book is in the works. I've already added the next to my book to my reading wish list. Cassie Shine and her characters have made an impression on me and I want to see what happens next - between Harp and her mom and between Harp and Connor.
Wow. Warning: You won't be able to put this book down!
Harp's Song is a beautiful and strong book that everyone needs to read! Due to the subject matter I wasn't sure what to expect and how I would feel while reading this. My heart broke for Harp and what she had to go through, but I'm so happy she had Connor who is her saviour and her spark that keeps her going. I fell in love with Connor and the way his relationship with Harp grows and develops.
Cassie is an fantastic writer who knows how to keep her readers on their toes just waiting to see what will happen next! She also knows how to capture Harp's reaction perfectly! I highly look forward to continuing with this series to see what happens next!
For once, this is a book that I had no expectations for. I was solely basing my expectations on the cover and the blurb. They both looked and sounded really good. Once I started reading I was sucked into Harp’s world, and even if I tried to get out I don’t think I could have left.
It was such a beautiful and easy read that it wasn't hard to keep reading. Harp has a lot of self-loathing problems because of her abusive mother. She was an only child and the only person who she let in and trusted was her best friend Connor. Even though they had a lot of physical contact it was never sexual or more than friends. It’s probably the only reason she trusted him like that. The only other think Harp loved more than Connor was her music, she played the Cello and she knew that was her ticket out of her mother’s abuse.
“I made a decision a long time ago. After I turned eighteen and graduated from high school, I would leave Liberty, Iowa and never look back. I would live life for me – the way I deserved.”
Harp had trouble letting people in, therefore besides Connor the only other people we meet are Ethan and Emma who are twins she goes to school with and Connor’s mom Catherine. Emma and Ethan were believable character, They were sweet and funny but at the same time overly willing to please her. It makes since Ethan was Connor’s best friend and he wanted to get along with Harp. Catherine on the other hand was a little less believable, I don’t know any mother that would let her teenage son sleep alone with another teenage girl. Even if that girl has serious issues.
“After so many years of hearing someone tell you how ugly you are, at some point, you start believing it regardless of what the rational part of your brain is telling you.”
I also had a big issue with Harp’s mom, maybe because it felt like time went so quickly in the book but when things changed for her it felt to rushed and a little to random. Even though we get an idea of why she changed it’s not really expanded on.
“I can see the honesty in her face and hear the quiet pain in her words, but it’s hard to reconcile that with what I've heard from her throughout my life.”
The one thing this book was not short on was the cute romance. As Connor and Harp’s relationships starts to change there’s a lot of room for “Aw’s” and swooning. It wasn't a perfect relationship but it was an adorable one.
“That’s my girl,” he says kissing my forehead again. “You are the bravest, strongest, most resilient, beautiful, loving, wonderful, amazing person I know and I love you.”
Overall it was a beautifully written book, that was both emotional while having comical relief. We cried, laughed, and fell in love with Harp. One last note, this book is heavy on abuse and if you or anyone you know is going through something reach out or call the abuse hotline: 877-995-5247.
This is a very quick read. I had a hard time putting it down. While some of the story lines have been done before the author has written a really charming story with characters that draw you in. Harp has not has an easy life but she is looking forward to the future. I like that her best friend and the only person she opens up to is a guy. Things then progress from friendship to romance. The only issue I have with the story is how quickly Harp’s mother changes. The catalyst to wake her up makes sense but it’s just such a quick 180 degree turnaround it’s tough to accept. Once you hear her story you can understand her bitterness but tough as the reader to forgive her after how she treated Harp. I do think the author does a good job with Harp’s reaction. She feels like you as the reader do and can’t forgive or forget easily. Fair warning there is a sequel the book does not end on a cliffhanger but the story is far from resolved.

Actual rating - 2.5
Harp's Song started out okay, but i lost interest.
I liked Harp in the beginning, but later on in the book she annoyed me. I can understand why she acted out after hearing what her mother told her, but it annoyed me. Her character completely changed in those scenes, and i missed the old Harp.
What her mother went through was awful, but when she went from being hateful towards Harp, to being loving towards her, i found it unbelievable. She did a complete U-turn! I really couldn't get to grips with how she changed so easily.
There was another moment that i found unbelievable too, which happened just before she started to go off the rails.
Overall, Okay, but had a few unbelievable moments.
As I read Harp’s Song, I felt my loyalties careening toward the characters I didn’t like in the beginning of the book. Several of the books I’ve recently read have faulty adult characters that make me want to scream. In many of these books, the characters are parents who somehow fail their children. In this book, it’s hard not to despise Harp’s mother. But when I read what she had been through, it broke my heart for both of them. It also reminded me that it’s important not to judge someone when I haven’t walked in her shoes. I loved Harp’s closest friends in this book, Connor and his mother Catherine, for being Harp’s support system. Harp’s character had so many wonderful talents including her musical ability and her determination to follow her dreams. I’d love to find out how Harp’s story continues. I received this book to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.
Harps song -Cassie shine 4**** We were given a copy of this novel for an honest review.
What a sad story!!! Harp...is a nobody...that invisible girl who we all ignore...but she has one spark in her life, her best friend Connor. Connor is one of the popular crowd, co captain of the baseball team, all the girls want him but has eyes only for harp. This couple is so sweet and loveable! You want to give them the world and make everything ok for them. There are a lot of little twists in this novel, it is put together well and has lots of emotion and passion in it. We felt such heartbreak for harp, but such love towards Connor. We look forward to harps voice and the follow on story.
**I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley to read & review. This is a 100% honest review.**
Harp's Song is the story of Harper Evens, a shy, cello playing girl with a cute best friend and a damaged family. The book follows Harp as she discovers the heartbreak behind her mother's violent out bursts and how she handles falling in love with her best friend - along with the usual high school drama's.
I think one of the biggest surprises with Harp's Song for me was Harp herself. I struggle with teenage girl point of views and at times - especially towards the end - Harp did fall into that category, but for the majority of the book she was strong and determined and didn't take any crap from anyone. Which I really liked. Her stories a tough one and I think that she did the best she could and I found myself rooting for her.
Although a character I did battled with was Harp's mum Anne. There were some real 'ass-hats' in this book, but you were meant to hate them. With Anne I wasn't sure how I was meant to feel. I didn't develop the appropriate sympathy towards her that I think I was meant to. I simply found her selfish and unreliable.
For a debut novel this isn't half bad, I've certainly read a lot worse but there were some holes in the plot created by overly used YA cliches and altogether randomness. There were a couple of times when the behaviour of a certain character would flip instantly and it would all seem ridiculously sudden. I mean it's not a very long book, so I guess it wasn't going to happen gradually but it almost felt like she had some sort of split personality disorder!
And then we come to Connor. He's protective without being dominate and possessive which is a hard balance to create and I give Cassie a massive round of applause for getting it right! It's not easy. Connor is sweet and popular, he's not afraid to cry and definitely doesn't have a problem throwing a punch or two. He's my favourite character from Harp's Song and I hope you like him as much as I did.
Overall, is was a good book. A little slow paced and sure, it was a tad cliché, but Harp is a strong-willed young lady with a story worth being told. Now that the character's have been introduced and the story laid out I'm looking forward to seeing where the second book goes and as long as it's a little lighter on the clichés I'm sure I'll love it.
In the beginning it seems that the focus of the story will be on Harp and Connor and whatever is developing between them. We get a few glimpses on how they became friends and the importance of Conner in Harp's life, which hasn't been easy. Ever since she could remember her mom loathed her. Harp had to take care of herself since a very young age and she has made sure she can avoid her mom as often as possible. Whenever they are in the same room, her mom would just beat on her down verbally.
Like I said, it all starts with this blossoming romance between Harp and Connor, then suddenly the focus gets shifted on Harp and her mom. This shift was a bit confusing to me and most of what happened so far did not seem that relevant to the rest of the story anymore. Harp's mom reveals some very dark secrets and Harp does not know how to deal with that knowledge. She starts withdrawing from the people who care most about her and retreat inside her head.
I did not fully understand some of the decisions Harp made after her mother's revelations. Instead of bringing the people she cares about most, she keeps them at bay and has this little rebel fase. With the focus mostly on that, it seems suddenly Connor is no longer in the picture. He is still there, but more on the background. Knowing he has always been there for her, done everything for her, I would have expected more from him.
The revelations from her mother are big shockers and I could understand that it really isn't easy. She just needs some time to process it all, but her aim is still to get out of the house and go to college. That never wavers and I like that determination Harp often shows. It was an interesting story and a pretty fast read. I would liked to have seen more of Connor, but the focus was more on Harp's personal struggles. The way Harp looks at things change and she needs to learn that the things we go through do not define us.

OMG, where do I really start with this novel. I was given this ARC when I just started my blog but life got to me and the blogging world was so busy that I didn't read it right away. I wanted to kick myself when I finished reading Harp's song.
Cassie is a GENIUS. Her writing style and characters will draw you in from the beginning to the end. And what an ending along with an insight into Harp's voice. I can't wait to read Harp's Voice, I can see that this book will also have me at the edge of my seat.
My purpose of this review is not to recount every event because I want you to experience the hurt, sadness and joy that Harp goes through. I will let you know what I love about this book.
Harp is a young girl in her last year of high school. This girl lived in an environment were she felt unwanted for so many years. The only thing that brought some light into her life was knowing that she will be leaving soon for college and her best friend Connor and his family who were a real family to her. The rollercoaster that Harp goes through with her mother, the violence, a secret surrounding her mother's dislike towards her was unreal. The reason her mother disliked her was very surprising and oh boy did a shed a few tears.
The story also involved Connor.
Connor was Harp's best friend and protector. I loved Connor. He was sweet, caring and a person in her life that would do anything for Harp. I loved that his friendship/relationship with Harp was put through so many obstacles but despite everything he was always there.
Harp's song takes you on a journey of a girl trying to be free, friendships and relationships being tested and repaired.
I would definitely recommend this to book to any and everyone especially if you love YA novels.

Review: I'm going to keep this review short and none so sweet. I think that this is just a major case of not my cup of tea. The main character annoyed me, I didn't really like the love interest, some aspects of the story just made me uncomfortable and I just couldn't enjoy it. The story flip flopped around, much like the main character and there was just so much going on, too much I think. We already had the abusive mother but then you have to go and pretty much every guy the main character meets besides her best friends is inappropriately hitting on and touching her and that really annoyed me. This book deals with some heavy subjects rape, mental and physical abuse and while it doesn't do a bad job of it I just didn't like it, I guess mainly because I don't like reading about these things, books dealing with death and other issues sure but rape and abuse not so much. More than anything it was Harp that annoyed me. She starts off as this strong independent person, she's been through so much but has survived all on her own and has a plan for a better life, but she quickly became naive and immature and I just did not like or understand her. Again I think this is a not my cup of tea thing, there's lots of talk and actual abuse and people calling Harp a whore and I just couldn't bring myself to like the book or Harp, I mean just when I would start to like it something new would happen to make me completely annoyed again. Honestly the only reason I finished the book was because despite not liking Harp I wanted to see her get her shite together and hopefully end up happy and I'm still not sure how a feel about the ending anyways.
Harp is a self-proclaimed recluse but what you find out during this novel is that although she might have reclusive tendencies she is honestly someone who doesn’t need that many friends because the ones she has are absolutely true to her. Harp has had an incredibly difficult life growing up. She was basically on her own from a small age and left to her own devices. Those devices that she thrived in were music. She plays the cello and has almost, to a point mastered the passion and love behind music. Her best friend and confidant is Connor Williams. They both have some buried feelings that are coming to the surface just in time for Harp’s life to become more difficult and muddy. Finding out where you come from can sometimes be devastating, knowing why you were never wanted can tear you to shreds. After some serious soul searching and riding the line of temptation a little too closely an accident will bring everything to light and Harp will have to become the adult she thought she always was and take care of a mom who wants to know her, and love the man who she was meant for. This was an amazing novel with little editing error, which is always a plus! I will definitely be recommending this book in the future.
Harp's Song blew me away, what a premise for book, Harp is the girl we see in the playground who kept to herself, never said much, she suffers at home in the hands of a mother who at her best is absent, and at her worse is physically and verbally abusive. Her one ray of light is her best friend Connor and his family. She has her life mapped out, if she can just get through high school she will leave town and never look back. Connor is her childhood best friend, she entire support system and eventually the great love of her young life, but how do you make good on your best laid plans when the world you thought existed suddenly shatters around you? How do you make sense of a life you've constructed when what you've always believed to be true changes in the blink of an eye? Harp's Song is a coming of age story that breaks your heart, and slowly pieces it back together again, changing it in the process. It's a story about second chances, best laid plans and following your heart. From the first page to the last lines I was enthralled and couldn't put it down.
Kleenex alert! Tears of sadness and tears of happiness. This is book one of a new series. A short preview of book two Harp’s Voice is also included.
Harp and Conner are best friends. He is her rock and main support. His family loves her and considers to her to be a daughter. Harp’s mother on the other hand is verbally and physically abusive towards her. Despite the fact Harp is growing up to be a wonderful, responsible young lady full of love with plans to go away to college and never come back.
I don’t want to give away too many details but I loved this book! I’m emotionally invested in Harp and Conner and I want to see what happens for them in the future. Download this ebook today!

Harp is a beautiful girl that has been mentally and had some physical abuse by her mom. Her mom never wanted her and wanted to make her life hell. Conner is her knight and shinning armor. He is her best friend and soul mate. He always came to her rescue when needed and asked no questions. One day the decide to take their relationship to the next level. Her mom spills her story to Harp and tells her everything she needs to know and Harp makes a total change in her life until an event happens. Does this scare Harp back straight and will Her knight and shinning armor save her?
I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a really fantastic read! I found Harp to be an incredibly endearing character, and I enjoyed seeing her relationship with Connor grow into something special. I empathized with Harp for the relationship she had with her mother. Overall this is definitely a book worth reading and I highly recommend. I'm really looking forward to the next in the series.
There's Harp who plays cello and keeps to herself. She doubts everybody and keeps walls built up. Her best friend is Conner who she grew up with and always goes to when her and her mom fight. I like him. He plays baseball and is a jock which is totally opposite of her. He's genuine and u can tell he cares for her. I liked both characters. The beginning just seemed to drag on for me. once it got going it was a good story. My normal reads r usually more steamy.
Harp's Song was a fast read. Once you start you have to keep reading. You want to know what happens. The story is sad at times. And you will hate Harp's mother. Very emotional. Harp has her best friend who she shares things with. And over time they grow closer. The characters were great. Their personalities were written perfectly to make them seem real and work together for a story line. The plot was well written as well. I look forward to book two after the short preview.
This was a pretty heartbreaking and emotional book. I was in tears a lot I with this book. This book also was a real page turner; it sucked me in so much I read this book (and the 2nd) in one sitting. You can find my full review here: http://myreads.booklikes.com/post/947...
This book has a great feeling to it- right from the beginning the author established a great flow to how the story was told. I enjoyed the friendship between Connor and Harp. And I like how Harp got her name. I was shocked at the abrupt change in relationships- a little upset at some but I understood where they came from and that they would be okay.
Such a sweet, emotional read! Cassie Shine has created memorable characters and a heart-wrenching story. I loved Harp, and swoon-worthy Connor... a great debut!
