The clash of two cultures, a love triangle, and a war are the backdrop to this historical romance of two charismatic people thrown together by fate, bound for life by love. The year is 1754 and England and France are locked in a struggle for sovereignty over the land, which is home to the tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy. He hates all that is white until he sees the golden haired beauty by the river. Certain she will perish alone in the wilderness, he forces her to the safety of his home. She meets his kindness with the viciousness of a cornered wildcat. Her past won’t let her trust any man. His future leaves no hope for a happy ever after. Yet they must have trust and hope if they are to survive the months of uncertainty ahead.
Every once in a while I get the urge to read what I lovingly call "brain fluff". An easy novel with no real complex plot, characters, or overtly heart wrenching themes. Reading simply for pleasure with the ability to put the book down at any time then return without having to remember exactly what was going on where I left off. One of my favorite genres for this is Historical Fiction.
I started off this novel knowing exactly where it was headed and the basic ending- white woman falls in love with the mysterious and handsome "savage" who claims her as his own and she ends up choosing a life with him. My issues with this novel are certain points in the execution. Parts of the novel are very well researched while others are blatantly lacking. I also found the character development to be very rough at certain points and many times the book felt like it was just rambling on with no real direction. Ben could have been eliminated all together after he gives Camille the idea of leaving the brothel. He doesn't really add anything to the story and it would have been far more interesting to read about Camille roughing it in the woods and learning to make due on her own. For a woman who is so fiercely independent and has no problems escaping from Hawk she had absolutely no spine when it came to Ben. It makes no sense given the personality the author painted her with. The sex scenes. Gee whiz. This woman worked in a brothel and you're telling me all she knows how to do during the whole 2 non-descriptive sex scenes we are given is lay on her back and grab his back? Seriously? Well, in the beginning she was having trouble saving up money while working and I think we all know the answer why now.... The sex was boring and simple. He licks her nipples then climbs on top of her. Except the second time when he inserts fingers and rubs for a few quick seconds first. Then climbs on top. None of this is explained in any good detail whatsoever. In short this book left me wanting more, especially from an author who obviously took some time to try and research the daily habits of the tribe.
Nice and fast read to make you dive into the Mohwak culture. I really liked Cam or Star Dancer's personnality and determination to live free after her abusive life. As Hawk said, she has an Indian Spirit meant for the life in the forest. I also liked that it took time to discover and understand the culture. You get surprised until the very last page.
