In this 2nd book in the 'NYPD Red' series, the elite police unit is chasing the Hazmat Killer. The book can be read as a standalone.

In New York City a vigilante serial killer is murdering people who have apparently evaded justice. The killer dresses the victims in Hazmat suits and leavies them in public places, seemingly as a warning to other criminals.
The 'Hazmat Killer's' first few victims are known lowlifes who don't attract much attention. But when wealthy political aide Evelyn Parker-Steele is tortured and killed - and a video is posted of her confessing to the murder of her lesbian lover - the authorities, the public, and the media take notice.
NYPD RED, a police unit dedicated to investigating crimes that involve high profile people (celebrities, political operatives, wealthy people, etc.) is called in to apprehend the Hazmat Killer. Detectives Zach Gordon and Kylie MacDonald are given the case after the previously assigned detectives make almost no progress solving the crimes.
The case is particularly important politically because a mayoral election is scheduled for the next week. The current mayor will lose the election if the case isn't solved before then; on the other hand, his opponent will benefit by delaying the capture of the killer.
The various shenanigans that follow put the detectives in a difficult situation. To add to the pressure, another potential victim is kidnapped and will undoubtedly be killed if the Hazmat Killer isn't apprehended very soon.
The book is well-written, with an entertaining police-procedural plot and a variety of characters who add interest to the story including a mafia family, detectives, politicians, a priest, a drug addict, and so on. There's also a bit of romance: Zach is conflicted because - though he has a girlfirend - he's still not completely over his love affair with Kylie (his partner) a decade before.
This is an engaging book and a fast read that I'd recommend to fans of detective fiction.

Oh how I wish I knew how much input James Patterson has in these books! There were parts of NYPD Red 2 which reminded me of his own books and then so much which was obviously the other author, Marshall Karp. For me this was not a good thing.
Of course the excellent story was there as usual. Lots of action, suspense and red herrings to lull the reader and then shock them at the end. My issue was with the slow parts where the main character waffled about his feelings which were apparently equally deep for two different women. One of these was his work partner and she was actually very unlikeable. It was a little juvenile.
However I enjoyed the story, I speed read the navel gazing parts, I was suitably surprised by the ending and I may or may not read more books in this series.

The crime plot in the second book of the NYPD Red series is even better than the first. I thought I had it predicted and then boom, I was wrong on the two killers. The beginning starts with a retribution killing in the two killers’ teen years to them becoming vigilante serial killers as adults. It is an interesting story with amusing characters. Love, love the characters of Zach and Kylie! I’ll read the next two book in the series to date this week; very enjoyable series.
My quick and simple overall: the prologue was great for readers to see how the killers evolved, which leads to a very complete crime plot for readers to read about.

I feel like I should apologise when I give such a high rating to a book like this. This is a book with absolutely no nutritional value. It is the "Olympus Has Fallen" of books.
But the thing is, sometimes I want to watch "Olympus Has Fallen". And sometimes I want to read the cheesiest James Patterson novel I can find.
This one fit the bill quite nicely and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.
What made it even better is that there is a British computer geek character named... wait for it... Matt Smith. Now I know that's a really common name, but the fact that he always seemed to be blundering in at all the wrong moments made it quite easy for me to picture the Doctor showing up in modern-day New York, stranded without his TARDIS (it obviously got lost in the space-time continuum somewhere), and deciding to help out the New York police department catch a serial killer before he went off to save the world. Headcanon, 1000% accepted.
(It's quite possible the serial killers were aliens, too, which is why the Doctor showed up in the first place... he just wanted to get a jump on Torchwood.)
(Have I mentioned how much fun it is being a Whovian?)
Ahem. So, in closing, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a big helping of brain candy.

I was really surprised by how much more I liked this book than the first one in this series especially after reading a lot of the other comments on it. James Patterson has been one of my favorite writers since I was a teenager and I have to admit that his recent novels that he has co-authored with other writers have not been as good as his older novels that he wrote on his own. That's all I can really say is that I hope he continues with the NYPD Red series. I'm beginning to like it almost as much as I like the Women's Murder Club series and that's saying a whole lot!

NYPD Red, the first, was one of my favorite books by James Patterson. In general I am a HUGE Patterson fan, but had kind of hit a snag with the Private series. NYPD Red 2 was just as good as NYPD Red; fast moving, twisty, interesting, and above all, a page turner. I love the characters; Zach and Kylie are at the top of my Patterson list with Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, and Lindsay Boxer. You do not need to read NYPD Red to read the sequel, as they are essentially stand alone. Overall, I would highly recommend this as yet another James Patterson thriller!

Wow!! What a ride! I think doing a reread of these series finally and doing the audiobooks on the Libby App, these have been like reading them again for the first time and I realized how much I didn't remember this one if I'm being honest here. But goodness I seriously loved this one like crazy. The story was good, I loved Zach Jordan and Kylie MacDonald, but mainly Zach even more and was reminded why I loved these characters way too much and wish they were on screen.
So I'm doing a whole new review since I could actually appreciate this one so much more the second time through. So the only thing I can only say again and will probably say again haha is that one day I'm still going to hope in my own little fantasy world that these books are turned into a crime show series and I just want to see both Detectives Zach Jordan and Kylie MacDonald of the NYPD Red task force come to life! Now I seriously can't WAIT to keep doing my reread for these and then seeing that there's a 6th book coming in hopefully next year (2020) I'm even more stoked and glad to be rereading and now listening to these again.

Detectives Jordan and Macdonald from Red division, New York, are back in the second book of a current six-book series from authors James Patterson & Marshall Karp.
This time the detectives are on the hunt for vigilantes who are targeting people who seemingly have gotten away with murder. They are torturing them, videoing their confessions, and then leaving them to be found by the public wearing hazmat suits – hence they are known as the hazmat serial killers.
Four people have already been murdered when the Red team gets involved after the murder of a high profiled woman with a powerful and wealthy family.
But the team has their work cut out as they race to bring the killers to justice before the local mayoral elections as ordered by the current mayor.
It was exciting to be back with the NYPD Red team Jordan and MacDonald as they are put onto the serial killer case. Their suspicion soon leads them on a path they were unexpecting and we are fed a few red herrings along the way.
I love the camaraderie between the two lead detectives though their banter wasn’t as full-on as in book one, especially as MacDonald’s mind was somewhere else with a personal issue for most of the book.
I love the cross-over of plots, one from many years ago when the killers were just teenagers and the consequences their actions back then now have on their lives in the present.
If you love full-on thrillers that keep you guessing then this is a series to pick up. Now I’m onto book three.

If I hadn't started this book at 5 p.m. on Sunday I would have finished it in a day. It was hard to put down. The tempo was fast and it kept me guessing who the killer was. There was even an oh no moment. This series is refreshing. As much as I love the Alex Cross character, I'm getting a little tired of reading about him. The storylines seem to be almost the same. This series is about an elite division of the NYPD that caters to the rich and famous. There were also some side stories woven in really nicely. I felt like I got to know the characters without it being too obvious. Very enjoyable read. I can't wait for book three.

First James Patterson novel I have read. I'm more fact than fiction, however, because I received the first 16 chapters free I found myself so intrigued I bought the book. It was amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I read it in two days as I found myself in the middle of the night sorting out in my mind what I read earlier, then had to pick it up and start reading on my kindle fire again. Wonderful read.

Gave up on this, one the worst pieces of writing I have seen. Really disappointed in Patterson's work lately. Maybe almost time to give up on what was one of my favourite authors.

"À Margem da Lei" é o segundo volume da saga NYPD Red do autor James Patterson e foi com muito entusiasmo que comecei esta leitura, pois a leitura do volume anterior foi voraz e entusiasmante. Assim sendo, pensei que tinha finalmente encontrado uma saga que me fazia adorar ler policiais, nada mais falso. Se a leitura começou bem não posso dizer que o tenha continuado. Tudo o que tinha adorado no livro anterior não existiu neste volume. Sou esquisita com policiais é verdade, mas este livro foi uma monumental seca. Pouca foi a visão que tínhamos do lado dos vilões e estes eram consideravelmente desinteressantes, o que também não ajudou a que me sentisse cativada pela trama. Já do lado da polícia as coisas evoluíram nas relações entre eles mas, e como sou esquisita, achei que o não haver crimes ao logo do livro o tornou secante, aborrecido mesmo e nem mesmo os protagonistas de quem tanto gostei no livro anterior foram capazes de me fazer superar isso.
Foi sem dúvida um livro do qual estaria a mentir se dissesse que gostei, não gostei, é um facto, mas também sei que muitos leitores irão gostar desta leitura.

It all began with a question, “ Do you think Hitler was a nice guy when he was in high school?” With that question - madness and mayhem ensued.
NYPD 2 was another quick, light yet, brilliant read by Patterson. Yes, I admit, Patterson is predictable in his writing but I enjoy it. After all, sometimes, and I know I can’t be alone in this, sometimes - you just want actually you need to see the path you are being led on; rather than getting bushwhacked out of no where while on your journey. I gladly give this one 5 stars. ❤️

It would be fair to say I have been underwhelmed by the latest Patterson Franchise offerings, so I was pleasantly surprised to come across this enjoyable police procedural. Not as fluffy and celebrity driven as the first NYPD book. And overall an easy-to-read thriller, comprising clever character development, steady plot progression and enough twists and turns to maintain the surprise factor. I can only hope this series continues to develop in this manner.

Typical formulaic James Patterson. A quick read with just enough humor and a predictable mystery, but I enjoy the Zach and Kylie characters.
Co-authored by Marshall Karp. These books don't do his writing justice. If you want a series of entertaining reads, check out his Lomax & Biggs series, especially the first book, The Rabbit Factory. Highly recommend those books if you like a blend of crime/mystery/humor.

2 stars because it was that - OKay. I would recommend it for a mindless summer beach read. On a positive note, there were red herrings and plot twists which were fun, but Mr. Patterson has done those much better in the Alex Cross and Michael Bennett series. The two protagonists in this series are 2 dimensional and I can't even remember their names -character development is so lacking.

I wish the first 2/3 of this story was as exciting and well written as the final 1/3. The first parts were just fillers of insecurity, jealousy, drug addicts, crooked cops and crooked politicians. The last third contains better dialogue, better pace and better writing. 6 of 10 stars

Like with most of James Patterson's books, this one reads easily and quickly but slightly predictable with some unexpected twist. Nonetheless, it was an entertaining and fun read.

An ok novel by Marshall Karp writing under the James Patterson book writing factory.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series and after a fairly solid start to this novel it petered off. Very simple writing that could easily be straight out of a comic book. A quick read but certainly not one of the best books I have read this year. The trouble with books been released in this way by numerous writers is that they lack the consistency of other writers who release novels every 9 months or so. The latter books are certainly below the standard of books that were written when it seemed more about quality not quantity. You have to question how much input, if any James Patterson has when in excess of 15 books have been released over the last 12 months.

Couldn't put this book down from the minute I started reading it. This is one of the better Patterson books that I have read this year. The story flowed seamlessly and the twist in the plot was brilliant. I didn't see it coming. I enjoyed the first book in this series but this one hooked me. Think this is going to turn out to be a great series. Can't wait for the next one to come out.

Most JP books are page turners, but this may be my favourite yet. NYPD Red take on a case of a vigilante killer and its good. Its hard to say more without giving spoilers, but the reveal blindsided me and I read a lot of crime.

I love the NYPD Red team! I might like this series more than the Michael Bennett series which is one of my favorites. I can't believe I didn't see this ending coming when it happened which is refreshing. I am jumping right into the next one!!

I don’t know where to start the suspense for the hunt of the hazmat killer’s was a thrill ride and especially since it turned out it was 2 cops who were the killers and I enjoyed every second of it!! Can’t wait for book 3 of the series!!

Loved the second installment of the NYPD Red series! On to the 3rd book. I love listening to the audible book and loved it! It’s amazing how Mr. Patterson pulls you into the story. The narrator is doing a wonderful job!

It's no secret that I love James Patterson, especially his series, Alex Cross, Private and now I can firmly add this series to that list. Having read the first book in November of last year, I was a little apprehensive as to whether it would continue on in the same vein because I loved that one. This book, although falling slightly below the first book for me, was still very enjoyable and personally, I think it has shown the potential for this series in the future.
This story follows two of my favourite Patterson characters, Zach and Kylie, who have to solve the murders of four seemingly separate people. There seems to be no obvious links between the victims other than that each of them is wearing a Hazmat suit. However, this case has been amplified due to another potential victim going missing and the town mayor running for re-election. Both of these reasons mean that this case has severe time constraints and consequences if they don't solve the mystery in time.
I think Kylie Macdonald is my favourite character from this series because she is so matter-of-fact about things and tries not to let herself get emotionally involved in situations. However, the ending of the first book in this series, ( I WON'T SPOIL IT, BUT IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW) has meant that she and her husband are in a pretty dark place and therefore she has to be more secretive and go about things in what, to Zach, seems to be a suspicious way.
The morals of the killer in this book are what made this book so interesting. Basically if somebody has committed a crime but not been punished for it, the killer makes them confess and then kills them personally. Although some New Yorkers accept the honesty in this, it almost makes you think that the killer is just as bad as their victims, if not more so!
This book is fast-paced, exciting and the side characters build up the suspense and intrigue that I have in this book. Although, the two sets of duos which work under the main Detectives did get a little bit mixed up in my mind initially, I loved how they played off each other and made things more interesting.
Overall, for me this book was a win but there were certain aspects, like my confusion with the side characters. which left me wanting a smidgen more. For that reason, I gave this book four stars and am looking forward to the next one in the series.

Detective Zach Jordan and Detective Kylie MacDonald are back and this time they are on the hunt for a vigilante killer. Someone has been killing those who are not found guilty from trials, but deep down the people know they are guilty. These two have been called in to take over the investigation as the latest victim is high-profile and her family has a lot of money not only from her husband's side but also her own. Zach and Kylie are part of an elite taskforce called NYPD Red which handles the cases that celebrities and high-powered suits are involved in which puts this latest case under their jurisdiction , but some of the cops especially the two that have been previously working the case aren't very happy about it and neither will be Captain Delia Cates if they don't find a suspect fast especially with the mayoral election coming up and the victim being connected to both sides of the election and its results. I do have to say one thing, when I was reading NYPD Red 2 - I couldn't help but think of the Captain as the Captain from Castle TV Show as they both had similar names. We learn that the killer's first move was when they were in high school after one of the connected to the mob family members raped his sister. After a taste of power and justice, the pair moved on to bigger and badder criminals. I have to admit I was a little cautious in starting this book as I found the first NYPD Red novel to be a tad slow for my liking, but I found that NYPD Red 2 redeemed the series for me. I did have a fair idea who the vigilante was, but I did like the twist at the end of the book when the identity was revealed as in a way everybody got justice served to them. In the game of death and law , there is no grey areas - it is strictly black and white and sometimes like life it's fair and other times it's definitely not fair but unfortunately we cannot make the rules as there are always dire consequences for those who believe they can.
