5 Unsung Tools of DevOps

Rate this book

The tools we use play a critical role in how effective we are. In today’s ever-changing world of technology, we tend to focus on the latest and greatest solutions and overlook the simple tools that are available. Constant improvement of tools is an important aspect of the DevOps movement, but improvement doesn’t always warrant replacement.

The tools presented in 5 Unsung Tools of DevOps provide insight into or control over a DevOps environment--and they require minimal installation and configuration. They're not the flashiest tools, but they're time tested and just work.

Not a book in a regular sense but a small intro for 5 tools. Needs for them are less today in cloud-native infrastructure; k8s, prometheus, terraform but still good to be aware of these old lightweight ones.

Disappointed

Most tools described in this book are more geared towards network operation tools rather than dev-centric ops tool. Still a nice to know for people who manages physical machines.

Unsung Tools of Devops may just be a deceptive title...there can't be that many serious sys admins who don't know of, and use (or have consciously decided not to use) these tools. And that's why only 4 stars.

But Jonathan is right - these are good tools to know about, and this book is a good start.

5 is Never Enough

Worth a read for the mention of mussh alone, but now that I've mentioned it, you're probably already aware of the whole list.
