Dog Team #2
The Return of the Dog Team
In his electrifying novel of combat, "The Last of the Dog Team, " William W. Johnstone introduced a hero for our times--Terry Kovack. In war, the enemy feared him. In peace, men admired him and women wanted him. . . Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, the legendary Terry Kovack, Steve Ireland is a trained killer. With his Special Forces team, he does his job quickly, quietly, with absolute certainty. And in the war against terror, his services are needed more than ever. Now, he finds himself hunting a different kind of prey. For when he is called upon to stalk and destroy a Middle Eastern terrorist cabal, he slowly realizes that he is following in another assassin's wake. Someone is staying one step ahead of Ireland and his team, taking out the enemy in his own way with lethal precision, and disappearing into the dark.
But what Ireland doesn't know is that his search for the truth will lead him to confront the ghosts of the past. A band of fighting men who were never supposed to exist; a team of soldiers who will go anywhere and fight anyone for their country; and a legacy that runs in Steve's own blood. . .

The Last of the Dog Team was one of Johnstone's first novels, published in 1981, and was reportedly one of the favorites of his own work. The protagonist (Spoiler alert!), Terry Kovack, dies at the end, but his legacy returns in this sequel published a quarter-century later, ironically after Johnstone himself had passed. It was published as a collaboration with Fred Austin, as were many of the posthumous Johnstone books before the name J.A. Johnstone was paired with W.W. on the many books. It's a suspense thriller/military adventure featuring Steve Ireland, a covert/black ops assassin who's the grandson of the now-legendary Kovack. He's detailed to wipe-out a terrorist cell in the Middle East, but somehow his targets keep getting wiped out before he arrives. It's a very anti-liberal, pro-conservative book of political intrigue with the conceits and assumptions about ethnicity, race, and gender one would assume, but it's a pretty good story that's not poorly written.

Different
Can’t say this book kept me excited and glued to this book. Kilroy isn’t a character I really liked. I tried this book because I enjoy Johnstone’s western characters, believe that’s his best tales.

Pretty good continuation of the Dog Team legacy. This book takes place in the middle east. Lots of internal and external politics for the boys of the team to navigate. Good way to spend a day.

The book was entertaining enough. Not written well enough for a higher score
