Ruth Ryan Langan (aka Ruth Langan) is an award-winning author of romance novels. She is a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award winner and has twice been nominated for Romantic Times Reviwers' Choice Awards, for Jade and Return of the Prodigal Son. She has spent much of her career writing historical romance novels for the Harlequin Historicals line of category romances. Many of her book are set in medieval times, while others are western romances. She has also written some contemporary romances, and often includes elements of suspense in her novels.
Langan began her writing career in secret. Her family discovered her writings when her children came home unexpectedly from school one day and found her writing. When Langan's husband was told of her hobby, he bought her an electric typewriter "because 'writers need tools'". Her first book was published by Silhouette Books in 1981 after an editor picked it out of their slush pile. After the first sale was completed, Langan got an agent.
Langan is a charter member of the Romance Writers of America. She has five children and lives with her husband in Michigan.
This is book 2 in a trilogy about sisters who are secretly privateers in the service of King Charles II. Unfortunately, this tale about middle sister Bethany has little of the constant sea battles and action found in book 1. It does start out promising, with a very brief confrontation with pirates followed by a little bit of mystery with two love interests. That quickly fizzles out and we are left with a ho-hum tale all the way to the incredibly cheesy drawn out trial scene and inevitable wedding. I don't know, after the first one I was expecting something different. Bethany seems far less capable a heroine than her older sister. Also not sure why she has a sword on the front cover, since her main skill seems to be with a gun.
I started out thinking this book was a bit silly. The first few chapters almost made me put it down. After that, I did like the characters and the story was good, even if it did not provoke a real good emotional response. I wanted the characters to have a little more strength and pull and a deeper situation. I thought they only skimmed the surface of what they were capable of. I really do love the books that throw you into a turmoil. This one did not. The last few chapters were way to flowery. Suddenly everything was happy and perfect. Even one of the children got to be adopted. She rounded up everything and made it a way too happy ever after story instead of keeping the characters in character, she turned it onto a Disney ending. Sadly, I was hoping for more. Maybe I am asking to much. It is a good book, especially of you like your romance to have a very happy ending tied up with a neat bow.
This book had me so hooked I read it in one day, could not put it down. It appears to be book 2 in a 3 book series, but the books are able to stand on their own, you could even read them out of order and I don't think it would be a problem at all. :0)
As I said, it was a very fast read with a great story, and amazing Characters. Definitely worth a read if you enjoy Historical Romance.
