It soon becomes clear that this is the first of a series of crimes where the killer is copying previous hit and run 'accidents' and turning them into murders. Detective Inspector Daniella Rudd, a new kid on the block in the West Midlands murder squad is given the case and recruits the contraversial but experienced Detective Sergeant Robert Bradshaw to her young team and soon wonders if she will regret it. They both have a past they would rather forget and a present they could do without. The blend of Bradshaw's knowledge and experience, Rudd's methodical approach and the youthful energy of her team result in a series of leads that raise difficult questions on immigration, racism, the failure of the law to deliver justice and the motivation of the killer. It is only when a young detective constable discovers startling new evidence that the team have their first chance to get ahead of the killer.
