The year is 1945. Germany is on her knees. The Allies are streaming into Germany from all sides. The end of World War II is near. Even so, some of Hitler’s most secret plans are beginning to yield success. Some of these plans are familiar; some are not. Some are lost; others live only to rise again. This is a story steeped in truth…
It is a massive secret. One largely unknown to the Allies until well after the war ends. It is a secret that could potentially destroy the world’s economy regardless of the war’s outcome. It is the Third Reich’s most closely held plan; even more secret than the German nuclear or rocket propulsion programs but as threatening nonetheless.
Sixty-six years later, Dana and Randall Finley are in the midst of an anthropology expedition in the rainforests of the Amazon when they are kidnapped by mysterious men in black and taken to a vast underground complex. Their situation is dire.
Back in Miami, Florida, former U.S. Navy SEAL Dane Skoglund stumbles across a sinister, shady group dealing in precious metals and death. When he learns his sister and brother-in-law are missing, Dane is drawn into action.
Unknown to all but a select few, the stronghold in the Amazon jungle is the key to the Nazi’s real goal to rule the world by destroying the world’s economy. Dane follows the trail to this jungle lair to rescue his sister’s group and encounters the Germans firsthand.
This book starts off quite viciously with lots of German WW2 intrigue, and The Reader is quickly given the impression that this story has an intense, life-or-death background.
Interestingly, The Author makes an attempt to have the men and women characters placed on a level scale together, but then he throws it all out the window by making several women “act like girls” and not be as strong-willed as the men they’re with. I find that kind of demeaning and poor imagination on the behalf of The Author.
And, in the opposite extreme, The Author makes every effort to describe several Nazis as barbaric, sadistic and with no morals … yet, when they have a woman prisoner they want to interrogate — surely one of the first things such people would do is abuse and sexually degrade the woman … but, no, the primary Nazis seem to be happy to just use the woman as a punching bag … This seems like The Author has more of a split personality than his characters, or The Author alluded to what the Nazis had in mind, but then he simply didn’t have the skill to describe it all?!?
One other pretty dumb segment of this book had 2 ex-Seals running all-out to escape some Nazi patrols — but, they also had 2 teenage ‘hostages’ running with them … not for short periods of time, but for HOURS and HOURS and many kilometers — and, as written, this wasn’t for short spurts, stopping to catch their breath, then continuing on and on and on. So! What kind of BS is this? — How likely Is It that YOU can run and run and run, without being trained to do so?!?
And, finally, my apologies for perhaps being nit-picky, but The Author made it a point to describe a particular person’s hand getting its bones crushed and broken … yet, miraculously, this same guy shows no ill signs or wear and tear when shortly later he is given a rifle and ammunition to carry and manipulate … I’m sorry, but that’s NOT going to happen with a useless hand that is causing immense pain.
Overall, this seems like a long book, and covers a lot of ground, multiple decades, and much death and destruction. There are some slow parts, there’s a lot of action and shoot-em-up scenarios, and there are a ton of good guys and bad guys (you’ll figure it out pretty quickly).
Wow is all I can say, this book rocks. From start to finish it grabbed my attention. It was hard to put down. The history at the beginning about the downfall of Hitler in Germany was informational and set the story line for the novel. The novel then jumps to present day in the jungles of South America. It is hard to put the novel down action packed from start to finished. Great novel. I have found a new author to follow the escapades of two American hero's Dane and Hugo.
Sure it had quite a bit of action....pretty much Hollywood type unrealistic action where 2(!) Miami lifeguards and about a half dozen other friends take out an entire Neo Nazi nation! I suppose "good guys" are supposed to win. At times one character reminded me of Clint Eastwood in "Where Eagles Dare". TOO MUCH loose language from ALL the characters. I speed read about the last quarter of the book...was glad to get it over with. I don't see myself reading anymore books by this author.
The book has a fairly interesting premise. However, that doesn't make up for the awkward writing or the multitude of plot holes. Perhaps with some stricter editing this would have been a great piece of fiction.
