PIRATE HUNTER'S MISTRESS - Book 2 in The Virginia Brides Series (Books 1 and 2 may each be read standalone):

Marlee Stafford was no fool.
She knew the handsome, arrogant Richard Arden had married her for her money, just as she'd wedded him for his aristocratic name. But Marlee wasn't about to give up all control to the too-confident baron. She would not sign over her inheritance until she'd enticed her handsome, broad-shouldered husband into desiring only her. But when his hungry kisses began to ignite her most intimate desires, Marlee knew she'd made a weighty error, for this mysterious man harbored a dark secret -- and now he was holding her helpless under HIS spell!

Lark Arden's passions ran deep.
Before meeting Marlee, his one desire was to gain the money for a new ship. But when Lark took on the masquerade of his recently deceased cousin Richard, he never expected his blue-eyed proxy bride to tempt him beyond sanity. Lark had planned only to "borrow" the money from Marlee, then flee. He never planned on stealing her virtue, but how could he resist tasting her sweet lips and sampling this dark beauty's fiery passions? And how could he live with desiring the very woman he'd soon betray?

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, I have always been intrigued by the history of the city and the south. New Orleans is unique, there is no other place like it and once you’ve lived there, you can never forget the sights, sounds and smells of the city. I am also intrigued by other countries, especially Ireland and England, probably because my ancestors were born there. So, I feel it is only natural that I have combined my love of history, New Orleans, and the British Isles in many of my novels.

EMERALD DESIRE was my first novel, published in 1985, and begins in Ireland and sweeps the reader to the French Colonial city of New Orleans. That was the first book in the Emerald Trilogy, followed by EMERALD ENCHANTMENT and EMERALD ECSTASY. Eight more books followed. I am pleased that ereads.com will eventually publish my backlist of books. At the present time EMERALD DESIRE, EMERALD ENCHANTMENT and PIRATE’S BRIDE are available on Amazon Kindle.

Not the author's best. I loved this book when I was younger but not so much anymore.

The story goes: The H marries the h to have money to rebuild his ship. So he lies and deceives is bride. The H, who is a privateer, is planning on hunting down the pirate who took his fiancee. Of course the two MC fall in love. She sneaks aboard his ship heading to NASA, While there she learns the truth about all his lies. Does she get angry? No! She loves him so much she martyrs herself to get his fiancee back.

The H has such a bland personality. The h is sweet, forgiving, and an annoying martyr. Though together, they did have a sweet romance.

Now I'm not saying the book was bad. It was just okay, especially compared to her other books.

I honestly am not sure if I like the book. The overall storyline is a tad predictable. Marlee marries Lord Arden VIA proxy groom because Lord Arden cannot make the trip. Unbeknownst to Marlee her husband is dead from an injury and Lord Arden's cousin decides to betray Marlee for her money. He feels that he is due the money his cousin took from him. Takes the poor girl's money and virginity, she falls in love with him, stays in love with him even after he reveals that he is not her actual husband that he was pretending to be, But that his name is Lark. Marlee wishes to give him a piece of her mind before he heads out to sea with the ship he purchased with her money to save his fiancee from a pirate that kidnapped her a year ago. Before Marlee has a chance to to tell him, what she really feels and thinks she falls off a rock hits her head, is carried to Lord Arden AKA Lark's ship via one of Lark's friends and also one who betrayed Marlee.

After Marlee wakes from her head injury in Lark's cabin she thinks that he is holding her against her will even though he knows not that she is located on his ship and is locked in his cabin. A really long story short Marlee and Lark are in love with each other Lark does his best to deny it because of his fiancee that he must save. Marlee is so drunk with love she goes to the pirate to save Lark's fiancee and delusionally thinks that Lark and her would marry after he finally realizes that he truly does love her after her sacrifice. She becomes the pirate's prisoner she successfully escapes with help of a few friends. Lark is the one who actually saves her and takes her to the boat, Larks fiancee and Medina must share the same cabin. Lark's fiance is a conniving witch. Lark calls off the wedding asks Marlee to marry him, she accepts, she is kidnapped by the goons of the pirate that held her against her will, There's a big ship battle she is saved, Lark and Marlee live happily ever after.

This book is now being sold as The Pirate Hunter's Mistress.

My reaction to this book all the way through was WTF? If I did a review for Smart Bitches, Trashy books, I'd write one of those reviews of an outraged reader. Ok, I got the book for free in exchange for an honest review. I am sorry to disappoint those who gave me the book but it is is just too ridiculous.

First of all, there is hardly any character development. To me the people read like little cardboard cutouts.

Secondly, I cannot believe the names of the main characters. Although the book doesn't say exactly when it takes place, it does seem to be pre-Revolution and from the existence of pirates and descriptions of Marlee's gowns, I'd say this is placed in the 17th century. I am almost 100% convinced no Cornish damsel would ever have been named Marlee. That is just too 20ith century for me. I also cannot believe for one second that a man would have been named Lark. That just reads like the sort of name hippie parents would name their son.

Thirdly, I found nothing to admire in Lark at all. He is a despicable man quite ready to abuse a woman for his own ends. He intends to rob Marlee of money. He deceives her for quite a long time and then has the nerve to have sex with her. Oh yes, she asks for it. She initiates it but how does that excuse him of allowing it? He knew he was not her husband. He knew he was going to use her and leave her and he did it anyway.

Fourthly, even after discovering some of his lies, Marlee still loves him. In my eyes that makes her too stupid to live. Has she no self-esteem? A liar, a fraud and he used her for sex and she still loves him?

Fifthly, Bettina is just full of cliches. Manuel Silva is full of cliches.

Sixthly don't waste your time reading it.

For a book with the word 'pirate' in the title I was expecting, you know, pirates. I'm not about to touch the convoluted first part of the story and will simply say Englishwoman Marlee Stafford finds herself trapped aboard Captain Lark Arden's ship. Lark's not about to stop anywhere and drop her off as he's on the hunt for one (and only one) pirate, Manuel Silva. I felt bad for poor Marlee. She's only wanted for her money and absolutely no one on either side of the Atlantic will tell her the truth. But then she falls for Lark and her I.Q., as well as any sympathy she had from me, goes flying out the window.

Lark is a horrible hero. For one thing he's not a very good pirate hunter. Marlee manages to find Silva on her first try. Perhaps Marlee should be the pirate hunter. Lark lies and manipulates Marlee in order to get her money, and omits important information, like that fiancee he's already got. But Marlee in her love-induced brain fart just keeps forgiving him.

A 'treasure' of a pirate romance!

This is one of the best romances I’ve read in a long time. Fast-moving plot, well-paced, well-developed, strong and sexy characters that really care for one another and I felt transported to another time, another place. Give me a good pirate romance any day and I’m a happy reader!

Lark doesn’t want to deceive Marlee, but sometimes fate has a way of intervening and things just happen…especially when desire rules and Lark and Marlee share a passion so strong that either will break the rules as long as they can find true love in each other’s sweet, loving embrace.

Author Lynette Vinet weaves riveting, wonderful tales of love too strong to ever fade. Lark and Marlee are worth meeting, worth remembering in Passion's Deep Spell, which was renamed and given a new cover in 2013 at Steel Magnolia Press so it's now PIRATE HUNTER'S MISTRESS.

Sigh, there is so much that is really bad about this novel that I hate to even begin to dive into a review. It must have been an earlier work because I have read other things by Ms. Vinet that were written so much better. These were cardboard characters shoved into a plot full of holes. I couldn't care what happened to them and spent a long and difficult time forcing myself to finish. Besides the poorly developed characters, plot elements that made no sense in any known universe, and going on and on forever, it is full of off-putting solecisms, like her orgasm shaking her to the bane of her existence and being turned-on by his musty scent.

If dashing sea-captains are your thing then this is the book for you! As other reviewers have mentioned I found the choice of character names - Marlee and Lark - a little odd considering the era the book is set in. I also found myself wanting to shout at Lark to stop feeling sorry for himself and his circumstances and to do something about them.. couldn't help but love him though! That said, I read this in a day, and would recommend it to fans of historical fiction; just not to those who are picky about historical details and anachronisms.

If you love historical romances and pirates you'll love Pirate Hunter's Mistress! Marlee was no fool, but she is an innocent. She marries Richard Arden knowing all he's interested in is her money. All Lark Arden wants is the money his cousin Richard squandered away. Little do either know the mess that Richard left. Lark doesn't want to deceive Marlee but does he have a choice? Thrown together by unforeseen circumstances can they over come obstacles and come to love?

Pirate Hunter's Mistress by Lynette Vinet is one of my favorite historical romances that involves pirates. I just love pirate romances. I just love the two main characters. I've read her other 2 books and I plan to read all the books of hers. A 4.5 star rating from me. (:

Another great "bodice ripper" from Vinet. I plan to read the read of the titles in this series. Vinet has a way of adding just the right spice to the love scenes without going over the top.

The Cornish Coast of England 1725

Marlee Stafford wanted a home and a husband but finding herself with a tarnished reputation, her parents dead, she’s been living with her aunt and two cousins for the last eight years.

‘I now pronounce you man and wife’, from the magistrate with a proxy marriage as Marlee has accepted a proposal to Lord Richard Arden, a man she has never met, but with her reputation in shambles she feels she has no other recourse to gain what she truly wants out of life, she becomes Lady Arden, Baroness of Arden Manor.

Suddenly being left behind following an unannounced quicky marriage, she takes it upon herself to insinuate herself at Arden Manor, after all she was the mistress of this household now and she has a husband to which she is going to introduce herself too whether he wants it or not. She is bound and determined to make him love her, to have a marriage that’s filled with love, not because she is an heiress with her own money and capable to make her own way in life thanks to her father. She feels deep down that Richard has only married her because of her inheritance, his reputation of a philanderer and rogue; she has heard that he had squandered all his money and was bound for the poor house. When she arrives at Arden Manor her fears are the laid truth of just how dior the situation really is. The house lacking in servants and in disrepair she vows that she will bring the estate back to its formal glory. Little does she know she has been duped in the worst of ways.

Lord Richard Arden after suffering from an accident passes away just before Marlee’s arrival. His dubious cousin Lord Lark Arden, a sea captain, meets his cousin’s wife with nothing but deception on his mind. His cousin Richard has squandered away his portion of the inheritance and he sorely needs that money to rescue his fiancée’ from the ravaging Pirate Manual Silva. He will get the money one way or another no matter who he has to hurt.

Manuel Silva, a most disreputable man, a master of the high seas and formidable pirate, one with a reputation of using and discarding women to horrible fates is the worst of the lost. With a reputation that precedes him he has a bad habit if kidnapping innocent women to satisfy his own wants and needs.

Threatening what few servants there are in the manor with his secret, Lark keeps the truth of his true identity from Marlee because she has not officially signed over her inheritance yet to her new husband. This is not the norm in this time period but her father before his death had decreed in the will that Marlee had the option to keep her fortune or marry and sign it over to her husband’s keeping. Now Marlee even though she is quite young, barely nineteen, she’s not stupid and refuses to sign over her fortune hoping that she will be able to use the fortune as a bargaining chip to gain her husband’s love. I like this kind of spunk in a woman and I’m glad the author gave Marlee the option to be her own woman and make her own decisions. Not something you see much of in merry ole England back then.

And thus the story really takes off.

This is a book of the high seas, pirates, violent storms, ravaged women, and of course you always have a bitch and a bad guy in the mix. This book does not disappoint. The author introduces the characters each with their own story and history that you will quickly be able to relate too. Marlee’s character is funny, determined and brave, yet with an innocence known for this time period. (It makes me wonder sometimes if the women back then were really stupid or was they in fact just chattel to men as portrayed in history and our regency books. I think in my opinion, that not all women back then were that lame in their thinking and there were probably a lot of them that defied their men and the rules of society.)

Lord Lark Arden is at first a very narrow minded, greedy ass. That was my first thought upon meeting his character. But he quickly will start to warm your heart as he does Marlee’s. You will sympathize with Marlee, want to strangle Lark, and will retch at the pirate Manuel’s character.

The author’s style of writing is precise and clean. But the editing could use some work as there were grammatical errors. Of course some don't know the difference between and adjective and an adverb and really don't care. But there were words that were not necessary and some out of context. And Marlee's character sometimes was a country bumkin and then at times she was the most well versed among the aristocrats. It left you wondering just what her true character was really like.

I enjoyed the sex scenes, they were very tastefully written by this author. Very sensuous, loving and hot, just what I like. There is some action on the high seas between ships but not a lot. There also is not much in the way of historical facts in this book which I personally like and wish the author would have included. It makes me feel like I’m learning more about the time period as I read the story. There were enough twists and turns in the book to keep me interested and reading more to see where the author was going to take the characters.

I'm not one to be extremely critical and hard on an author, they all have their own style of writing so all in all this is a good book. I would recommend it to other readers that like piracy and strong women. I would like to read more in this series, especially Book one.

Not my cup of tea. I have a problem not finishing books, I always feel that if I start something I need to finish it, but this is really not for me. I wanted something light after a few heavy hitters, so I thought a light romance with pirates, what could go wrong? A lot, apparently.

I really enjoyed this book. So much in fact, that I started and finished it in one day. I liked Lark. He tried so hard to be honorable, even when what he was doing wasn't very honorable. I loved when he finally decided to be honorable to himself and not what everyone else expected of him. I liked Marlee, too. She was clever and intelligent, but also very naïve. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a cute historical romance with some action. Also, I love the cover. <3

Superb

Charming, complete, smart; the World is Not Enough meets Count of Monte Cristo good. There was a lot of vocabulary for me not having read many pirate-type books, but the pacing was good, it was well organized, and the events came together nicely. There were a few things that were predictable, but they fit perfectly into the story. I would like to read more!
