A new chapter that turns upside down the entire story of Metro 2033 and that promise a continuation to the breathtaking story of survival and struggle for a future set in the catacombs of the subway system in post-apocalyptic Moscow.
This epilogue is a link to the upcoming METRO: LAST LIGHT video game, to the yet untranslated METRO 2034 and to-be-written METRO 2035! An absolute must-read for all those who loved the book and the game!
The original story that inspired both the METRO 2033 and METRO: LAST LIGHT video games! An international bestseller, translated into 35 languages.
Set in the shattered subway of a post apocalyptic Moscow, Metro 2033 is a story of intensive underground survival where the fate of mankind rests in your hands.
In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age.
The year is 2033. An entire generation has been born and raised underground, and their besieged Metro Station-Cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await outside.
Artyom was born in the last days before the fire. Having never ventured beyond his Metro Station-City limits, one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to the heart of the Metro system, to warn the remnants of mankind of a terrible impending threat. His journey takes him from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, where his actions will determine the fate of mankind.

back to back review lol! this took quite some scouring to find online cause i wasn't gonna order a single chapter online... but anyways, it is great and really fleshes out the ending of 2033, making it more emotional and setting up the next book (i think, i mean it sets up the second game??). although i think 2034 is focused more on other characters, and then maybe 2035 follows this more directly? i have no idea but i will find out!
Note: This really should've been a review that comes after writing about the main story. But there is much for me to ponder over in regard to Metro 2033, which requires a detailed discourse. So, here goes.
// Spoilers for the main story //
This short excerpt, more of an epilogue, is a companion piece to the main story of Metro 2033, added during a later edition, to provide more context as to the mental state of our protagonist Artyom.
Following the destruction of the Botanical Gardens, and the Dark Ones' nest that was located in it, the whole metro rose in celebration, at the elimination of a dangerous threat to their existence. Artyom, who played an instrumental role in bringing about this victory, was hailed as a hero.
Little do they know that their hero is a broken man, plagued with remorse and guilt. For only he knew, in the literal last minutes before their demise, that the Dark ones were not the harbingers of human extinction. Rather, they could've been the heralds of a future, a better tomorrow, which saw humans once again retake their rightful place on the surface. With whom, the remnants of humanity could've formed a harmonious alliance, in order to build a better world.
But all those hopes and dreams, turned to ashes, with the Dark ones themselves. Even after knowing the truth, Artyom is unable to share it with anyone; for fear of undermining the fragile and false sense of safety that the people of the metro now possess. And for fear of being mistaken for being brainwashed by the 'evil' creatures before their extinction.
So now, he wanders the wasteland, alone, as a stalker, visiting the tomb, the shrine, the monument of his failures, seeking forgiveness to the spectres that remain. The boy from the Exhibition, who once dreamt of taking on the role of knights and slaying dragon, lost his innocence, and grew tired with the weight of reality presented to him.
It's one thing to see your heroes live long enough to turn to villainy. A whole another to see them defeated despite victory, lose their conviction and will, turn to a shadow of their former self. Yet, the conflict and suffering he feels, define his humanity. And even though he might die, taking this secret, and his demons to his grave, without knowing it, Artyom is the last lamp bearer of the spirit of humanity. Whether he accepts it or not.

This whole prologue, gave me strong vibes of Ender, post his victory over the Formics. And much like Ender, after the weight of his actions almost crush him, Artyom too finds his purpose, as the caretaker, as the bridge that serves as a foundation to a better future.

★★★★★ - I loved the epilogue. It was definitely a great addition to Metro 2033! This epilogue wasn't very long (27 pages). It is written from Artyom's point of view, contrary to Metro 2033. I don't have much to say since it was so short but I definitely don't regret reading this. There's a small cliffhanger at the end that makes me wanna read Metro 2034... However, I don't know if I'll read that immediately because I heard quite a lot of negative reviews concerning this book. Concerning The Gospel According to Artyom, it was a nice epilogue and I definitely recommend reading it if you enjoyed Metro 2033 because you have here some explanations about the ending and Artyom's backstory.
Like others have said, it's good. It's more about Artyom's feelings post 2033. But it's so short I feel like it should have just been included with one of the other novels, or cost less than 1/2 the price it's selling for. It's 1/3rd the price of a novel but 1/25th the length... (18 pages vs Metro 2033 is 458). I read it in one sitting.
2 stars only because there is absolutely no reason for this to be excluded from the published book. It's a 20 page long epilogue to Metro 2033 that should have been in every published book cause it answers some, to me, very important questions about the novel.
And secretly these 20 pages of the epilogue are better than the majority of the Metro 2033 novel.
This epilogue to the excellent Metro 2033 was released only on Kindle for some reason. It picks up Artyom's story very shortly after the conclusion of Metro 2033 and also fills in a bit of Artyom's back story. It was worth the small investment. I only wish it was longer.
"Now it's just soot and ashes and only the plastic bags float above this charred plot of land... Perhaps, that's all what will remain of our civilization, of our world – the bags, these indestructible excrements of ours. A fitting memory of lowly us."
Sehr gut. Vermutlich der perfekte Teaser für Band 2.
