Sheriff Zeb Hanks has his hands full when sociopath Jimmie Joe Walker, recently released from an Arizona state prison, masterminds a devious plan to make himself filthy rich. His plan involves Ángel Gómez, a down-on-his-luck half Mescalero Apache/half Mexican. Ángel’s alcoholism and far-fetched dreams make him an unwitting dupe in Jimmie Joe's plans which end up endangering Ángel’s own life as well as the lives of those he loves.

Set in and around the mining towns of Safford and Morenci, Arizona and near the San Carlos Apache Reservation, this Sheriff Zeb Hanks tale takes the reader on quite a ride. While dealing with the consequences of choices he has made, Zeb is confronted with inconceivable loss in his personal and professional life. Deputy Kate Steele’s relationship with Eskadi Black Robes, Tribal Chairman of the San Carlos Apache Reservation, becomes conflicted as she works with Josh Diamond, local gun shop owner, to provide support for the sheriff. Ultimately circumstances cause Sheriff Hanks to question everyone and everything in his world, shifting his very foundation.

ADIÓS ÁNGEL reveals the complexities and contradictions that are part of life’s gritty nature. It is a story of evil, alcoholism, love and betrayal.

This is the third in the SMALL TOWN SHERIFF: BIG TIME TROUBLE series. The first two are NATIVE BLOOD and HOLES IN THE SKY. All are available as Kindle downloads on Amazon.com or in book form on Amazon.com.

Mark Reps has been a writer and storyteller his whole life. Born in small town southeastern Minnesota, he trained as a mathematician and chiropractor but never lost his love of telling or writing a good story. As an avid desert wilderness hiker Mark spends a great deal of time roaming the desert and other terrains of southeastern Arizona from December to May. A chance meeting with an old time colorful sheriff led him to develop the Zeb Hanks character and the world that surrounds him. Mark returns often to SE Arizona for inspiration, information and to maintain the general feel of the area, learn its history and understand the local residents.

When Mark started writing he became pen pals with Tony Hillerman who offered up tips, criticism and ideas on some of his early novels. His books are often compared with the Longmire television series and books by Craig Johnson.

Mark’s most recent project is the eighth installment of the ZEB HANKS series, NATIVE DESTINY which launched in the spring of 2018. He is working on a Zeb Hanks Novella which will be distributed free to subscribers. Books nine and ten (and likely beyond) are planned at a pace of one per year through 2020. Welcome to the series!

Another Good Mystery

Mark Reps has given us another good mystery. The clues are there from the beginning. It wasn't too difficult to piece the majority together and yet there were still some things that were unexpected right up through the final pages. The character of Zeb Banks continues to show more sides of this complicated man . Being female, I am somewhat confused by the variety and intensity of his reactions to the rapidly changing events. I am also surprised at his reaction to Doreen in relation to their future. I will say no more, as I don't want to spoil the fun. Please keep the stories coming.

This continues the saga of Zeb Hanks, small town sheriff in the Southwest. Although this book has less of the Apache culture in it than previous ones in this series, the story unfolds nicely as we follow the down and out struggles on one Angel. He is 50% bad luck and 50% bad choices. The sub characters including Kate Steele, deputy, are developed nicely. The sheriff's office is becoming like family. I do wish the author had included a little more about Apache culture as he has in previous books. Nevertheless, this is a series I will continue to follow.

Adios Angel - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Set in the Grand Canyon State, Mark Reps' spectacular adventure - #3 in the wonderful Zeb Hanks: Small Town Sheriff Big Time Trouble series - changes its main focus away from the small town in Graham County to a national one initially, before the 'Big Trouble' comes to Safford for Sheriff Zeb to overcome in his usual inimitable style!

When Angel Garcia ends up in prison his life would have been in some peril, were it not for the 'protection' of fellow inmate Jimmy Joe Walker. On release, Walker tells the timid Angel his plan for them both to get rich easily and how Angel will impress his girlfriend Juanita and his Grandpa Felipe. Trouble is, there's no honor among thieves as Angel finds to his cost. Sheriff Zeb Hanks, former Sheriff Jake Dablo, (now retired) and new Deputy Kate Steele, will find themselves tested to the limit in this nerve-tingling, thrilling book, by the excellent Mark Reps. Definitely one for the bookshelves of fans of Tony and Anne Hillerman and R A Chappell!

The plot was great and kept me trying to detect what the antagonists were up to, which isn't always the case with some mysteries that make it too easy to guess the endings. I liked reading about the dynamics between the different cultural groups too. The only thing that bothered me were the mistakes that should have been caught in editing. Mostly a minor thing here or there, but I mention it because there was a whole half a paragraph that was repeated. So mid-sentence you turn the page and the paragraph repeats itself before finishing the sentence. It took a couple flips back & forth between the pages to make sense of how the sentence/paragraph was supposed to read.

I have read several of the Zeb books and will work at the rest of the series. They are well written by a story teller who understand human nature. Especially in a small town. We aren't like city people. Are values are different. The story carries you along and keeps you turning pages. Maybe too late into the night. You think you know the ending but you will keep reading just to see if you are correct. Mixing the lives of the "white people" and the Apaches takes skill to carry it off. Will a wedding occur? Will the deputy decide which of the two men to include in her life? Will all the crimes come together and get solved?

This is not our Angel of several books ago, but Cadete 'Angel' Gomez, a small, simple, naive young man, already an alcoholic, prone to making bad decisions and easily manipulated by the massive, extremely evil Jimmy Joe. And bad as he is, no one can say Jimmy Joe isn't cunningly smart. But can he win against our cop crew in Safford? I think not...

I didn’t like the ending

The book was good. The way Jimmie Joe abused Angel and kept mentally s sad abusing him was what you figure would happen with a man like him. Zeb’s personal issues seem immature for his age. Looked a lot like the 60’s man’s outlook. I expected more.

a good read, but now I need the next book to find out how things will turn out with Doreen....

and Jimmie Joe's one very sick bastard.

I liked Eskadi and his role on the first book, so I had hoped there would be more of him on this one... nope. Well, well see. Currently looking for the next Zeb Hanks book.
