British science-fiction series Doctor Who is a worldwide phenomenon. Unlike many 20th century television or movie series, it has been brought into the 21st century intact, with fifty years of history behind it. The Time Heads' Concise History of Classic Doctor Who introduces you to the first eight Doctors and their adventures, the creative teams that brought the show into existence and kept it going for twenty-six years, and the people who brought it back again. Twenty-eight short chapters will give you basic familiarity with the classic Doctor Who series, plus enough behind-the-scenes information to win a trivia contest. But Spoilers.
Stanton is correct- this history of Classic Doctor Who is indeed concise. I flew through it in one day. This little book is jam-packed with Classic Who storylines from the first Doctor all the way through the eighth. It's approachable, easily digestible and a great starting place for those of us (me included) who started watching Doctor Who within the past 15 years and want to catch up on the first 26 years of the program without binging the entire thing (which, let's be honest, wouldn't be terrible!!). It hits on all the important story points, as well as reasons for actors coming and going, BBC's feelings on the series, and the troubles the writers and producers went through to just keep the show on the air. The only thing I wish this book had is pictures of the Doctors and a few of their companions, and possibly a more succinct timeline somewhere in the front or back of the book. That would have been the icing on the cake to this great little Who reference novel.
