A phone call at two a.m. is never good news. But there’s bad news and then there’s strange news. Lindsay’s two a.m. call is a plea for help. There’s a woman in Fred’s closet and he can’t get her out.
Their new neighbor, Sophie Fleming, has taken up sleepwalking, straight into Fred’s house and his bedroom closet. She’s having nightmares about the brutal stabbing of a little girl named Carolyn. But Carolyn was her imaginary childhood friend.
Lindsay, Fred, Trent, Paula and Henry must solve a twenty-year old murder with no bodies, no DNA and no proof the victims ever existed.
How can someone who never lived be murdered? Why is Sophie seeing it happen in Fred's bedroom? Why is she hiding in his closet? Will his clothes even fit her?
Book 4 in DEATH BY CHOCOLATE series from USA Today Bestselling Author, Sally Berneathy
“Write what you know,” they said. I’d been married three times. I wrote romances.
Fast forward ten years.
“Write what you know,” they said. I’d been divorced three times and fantasized about murdering my ex. Only massive doses of chocolate kept my finger off the trigger.
Now I write about murder and chocolate and the occasional ghost.
Sophie Fleming had returned to the home she’d left with her parents when she was five years old – her renovations made the old place opposite Lindsay’s house look like new again. But Sophie had traumas in her long ago past – traumas that hadn’t been addressed. She was having nightmares and sleep walking – something she hadn’t done since she was a child. It was up to Fred and Lindsay to discover the cause…
Was there a murder twenty-five years ago? Or was Carolyn only Sophie’s imaginary friend, just as her parents had told her? With Fred’s talents and Lindsay’s doggedness, they were determined to find answers.
I love this series! I know when I pick one up I’ll be entertained with laugh-out-loud moments and it’s always a great follow up to a heavy read. In that way, Chocolate Mousse Attack (4th in the Death by Chocolate series) by Sally Berneathy didn’t disappoint! An excellent cosy mystery series which I highly recommend.
Chocolate Mousse Attack is my first Sally Berneathy chocolate mystery, and I'm hooked. Divorced chocolatier Lindsay is awoken at 2 am by an urgent phone call from a neighbor Fred. The woman who just moved in across the street a few hours ago has sleepwalked straight into Fred's house, wearing only a thin nightgown. Fred can't get her out of his bedroom closet, and he needs Lindsay's help. But when the two of them manage to get Sophie Fleming out of the closet, they discover it's more than a little sleepwalking.
Sophie had a nightmare that Lindsay and Fred soon realize must be more than fantasy. It's murder.
Sally Berneathy has created a very likeable amateur detective character with Lindsay, and great sidekick in Fred-the-neighbor with his old car, sober manner, and hacker's knack for digging out secrets online. Add King Henry, the stray cat who adopted Lindsay and knows more than a feline should, and Lindsay's boyfriend - a cop who refuses to cancel her speeding tickets - and it's no wonder I've just fallen in love with Berneathy's Death by Chocolate series.
I won't add any spoilers, but if you like your mysteries with a touch of laughter, and a great cast of characters, you can't do better than to check out Chocolate Mousse Attack.
These books are so much fun! In this one, Sophie, a new neighbour, ends up in Fred's closet and won't come out. When they find out that she is having nightmares about what might be a 20-year-old murder they all get involved with determining the truth. With the usual funny sub-plots, continuing mysteries about Fred and Henry's protective nature I couldn't stop reading. I am enjoying every book in this series.
Although I hadn't read any of the previous novels in the Death by Chocolate series, I was able to slide easily into the world of Lindsay, Fred, Paula, Trent, and their other friends. And what an enjoyable world it is. Lindsay bakes and sells what sound like divine chocolate desserts (and the author thoughtfully provides us with the recipes at the end) while solving mysteries at the same time. Great combination...what could be better than curling up with chocolate and a good book?
The mystery this time involves a new neighbor whose sleepwalking tendencies suggest past trauma. She thinks she saw a child murdered years ago in Fred's house. Is she imagining things or did a tragedy really happen? Is someone trying to frighten her and drive her away from the neighborhood, or is she just a bit of a nutcase?
Lindsay's witty, wise-cracking voice is one of the best things about this novel. She had me laughing out loud on numerous occasions. The secondary characters are richly developed, even when smarmy (Lindsay's ex husband), bratty (the devilish young son of her ex), or enigmatic (Fred). Fast pacing and a solid plot combined with Lindsay's engaging narrative to produce a hard-to-put-down treat. I will definitely be grabbing copies of the earlier books in this series. And later ones. Warmly recommended!
Chocolate Mousse Attack by Sally Berneathy is Book 4 in the Death by Chocolate series. A sleepwalking new neighbour reveals a murder witnessed in her childhood that had taken place in Fred's house. Another fun book although the antics of Lindsay's ex and now his obnoxious kid and family are starting to get a bit tired and annoying and Lindsay should have handled this situation by now instead of allowing herself to be used by them.
There's a new neighbour in Lindsay's neighbourhood. Sophie Fleming seems like a very nice person. At 2am, Lindsay gets a call from Fred to inform her that Sophie is hiding in his bedroom closet and won't come out. Fred! Who would have thought it of him! When Lindsay finally coaxes her out she has a strange story to tell. When she was a child she lived in the house she has just bought. Her parents left suddenly and move away but died shortly afterwards in a fire caused by a gas leak. She had an imaginary friend, Carolyn, and she had a nightmare in which she saw her killed in what is now Fred's bedroom. What is she doing there now? She sleepwalked and only woke up when she got to her destination. However, Fred can find absolutely no information about a murder or a missing child. Was it all just a figment of Sophie's imagination? But then someone tries to kill Sophie in her home, in exactly the way in which her parents did. It's game on for Lindsay and Fred. “Chocolate Mousse Attack”, fourth in the series, is a fun read and just a tad darker than previous books. I do wish that Lindsay and Adam would move their relationship forward, but Adam, solid and dependable, is not one to trifle with the affections of a married woman (well, not much!) 3 Stars.
A sleepwalker, a murdered imaginary friend, and a wild child. What could go wrong?
When Fred calls Lindsay in the middle of the night to help remove a woman from his closet, a series of events is set in motion. Lindsay’s new neighbor, Sophie, sleepwalks when she dreams of the murder of her imaginary friend, Carolyn, who once lived in Fred’s house while it was unoccupied. While Lindsay is finally spending some alone-time with Trent, her fierce cat, Henry, announces an unwanted visitor at the door. She opens it to Ricky, her ex-‘s wild nine-year-old son, left behind when his dad and the lady-du-jour leave for an extended trip.
Lindsay juggles Ricky’s misadventures with her work as a chocolatier and her determination to find the murderer of someone who may or may not have been real. Thank goodness for enigmatic Fred who teams up with her, and for her friends who never give up on her. The author kept me laughing and intrigued. I especially liked some unexpected character growth.
I hope to see all these characters again in future episodes of the “Death by Chocolate” series. If you want a fun read with plenty of action, feisty characters, and chocolate, I highly recommend this sassy cozy mystery.
I am really hooked on this series and new to it! I love Lindsay! She is someone you can see yourself hanging out with and the chocolate is just a bonus! This is another great mystery. There is a beautiful new neighbor and she keeps sleepwalking into Fred's house! I loved the addition of Sophie to this group! Is Sophie crazy? Did you witness a murder when younger or is it really in her imagination? I love when Fred and Lindsay are out interrogating people, they are a great team. This book didn't have too much Rick but definitely a Rick like problem keeps Lindsay on her toes this time around. Another great story, a potential Love interest for Paula, and an awesome mystery that keeps you wanting more! Already starting the next book!
I feel like we get just a tiny bit more insight to Fred in this book, He has no idea what to do when he finds a woman in his closet in the middle of the night, and despite his usual perfect adherence to traffic laws, he has considerable skills in high speed chases as well, so does his car. All in all, it was very enjoyable. Lindsey and Trent are finally free of the legal entanglement with Rick, although Ricks still finds ways to entangle, and are developing their relationship. And Paula, even, is starting to come out of her shell just a little bit, maybe with some more encouragement (or really, nosiness) from Lindsey, Paula and Matthew will start something of their own.
Another solid book in this series. While Lindsay was in on the action, most of it centered around her new neighbor. The whole story there was a bit crazy, something that could only happen in fiction land, but it made for some great reading. Fred was in the thick of things too and I was hoping we would get a little more backstory for him. Instead he's sort of like batman, always coming to the rescue and knew who to talk to help figure things out.
I was disappointed to see Rickie back, as he is a demon child, but even I felt sorry for how he was just left.
Delightful, delicious, light fun murder mystery. Number 4 in the series, could be read as a stand alone, but as in almost all series, there is character development and love interest that you would miss out on if read out of order. A new neighbor moves onto the street and Lindsay of course becomes involved in her life and her mysteries. Paula finally comes out of her PTSD shell and opens herself to a man in her life. Fred and Trent and Rick are all still around helping and hindering. Hilarious fun. And the food!! Oh, my.
This author uses a fun method of writing. This is the fourth book in the death by chocolate series. Looking forward to the next book. Even though the theme is serious, the way it’s written makes it much more enjoyable. I would recommend this book to those who like murder mystery
Sally Berneathy is an excellent cozy mystery writer. Her characters are down to earth and believable. Her storylines are fun to read, amusing and entertaining! It's hard to put one down once you start reading. In fact, I stayed up half the night reading this book because it was so good I couldn't stop! This storyline was so intriguing, and Lindsay was her usual snarky self.
I have rated Death by Chocolate a four star. I absolutely loved the characters and her kitty. A fun plot the twists and turns not knowing what's going to happen next. I absolutely loved the humor I laughter so much reading this fun cozy mystery. I actually couldn't stop reading it. The mystery and it was also extremely exciting. Love it.
I am really enjoying this series. It's full of suspense, mystery, romance, and comedy. Lindsey captures not only a killer in this one, but also gets the sexy detective.
Another fun story in the Death by Chocolate series. The mystery was well done, though I did have a good idea of what was happening from early on, it held together well. The characters are very enjoyable and the humor keeps me laughing throughout.
Lindsay's new neighbor Sophia, has trouble sleeping. Trent babysits. Fred does a wheelie. Paula meets someone interesting. The plot is simple but the characters are fun. Good recipes too.
Very well written with vivid imagery and great story. Taming Little Rickie Jr. is task number 1, all the while trying to figure out the mystery across the street. Funny and a page turner.
Sally Berneathy has a fantastic and entertaining writing style. Her Death by Chocolate series is fun and witty. Book 4 is quite intriguing. Can't wait to start the next book.
Absolutely brilliant, full of mystery and drama, and of course some comical moments in fact a lot of comical moments, I have read all of the Sally Berneathy ' Death By Chocolate ' and I have to say I've enjoyed every one.
Another wonderful exciting mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat and can’t wait to get back to reading the next chapter when you have to do something else. Recommend it to everyone and love the recipes.
Part of a very easy to read series of books about Lindsey, a chocolate who gets in a few scrapes and relies on friends, neighbours and co-workers to help her out.
We've grown to love Sally Berneathy's Death by Chocolate books. This one is typical. Which is to say, very good. Read it with your favorite chocolate dessert.
