We love the Hairy Bikers/Dieters. They especially know how to create flavourful/global recipes. It's easy to limit your calorie intake when the dishes have lots of flavours!

Another brilliant book, this and the first are so dog-earred from their constant use. I think that is a good sign!

Although hardly a bible for the vegetarian on the road to a healthy weight, being heavy on the dead stuff, this was a worthwhile and enjoyable read. It did read like a book produced by men who had loved too much... food.... and who had genuinely had to put in the work to lose weight and more importantly improve their health, without losing their raison d'etre. It is not a 'celebrity diet' book... or a diet book at all... and although I am sure some would argue it is just milking the 'Hairy Biker' Brand for all it is worth (and I've not read the first Hairy Dieter book) I rather like a follow up along the lines of 'a year on we've not put the weight back on but we do still need to keep an eye on it"

I particularly liked the page at the back "What You Get For 100 Calories" and I'm going back into the book to commit some of the nifty techniques to memory. I wasn't overly impressed with the appearance of 'half fat cheese' and such like 1) in my experience you end up using twice as much and you don't get a choice of really good quality local or organic cheeses and 2) well, duh! However, it is interesting that they don't use it throughout and sometimes specify parmesan or extra-mature cheddar or double cream, so maybe they know exactly what they are about with the flavour combinations. There was an interesting strategy for making Cornish pasties using a bread mix instead of pastry but 'lots of carrots' as per the description? Nope, no carrots in the ingredient list, no carrots in the method. Maybe 'lots of swede' doesn't sound quite appealing enough? It has quite a 'blokey' slant to it with many 'fakeaway' recipes.

I can see myself making quite a few of these recipes (and given how many others are out for vegetarians and not all that adaptable that's quite a high proportion of the possibles) Not many fiddly ones. There's an apple cake recipe that has inspired me to get up the garden and get picking and the suggestion born of experience that you quarter the resultant cake and get three-quarters in the freezer to stop yourself being tempted to eat far too much at once.

All the recipes I've prepared from this cookbook work and taste great. And having seen that the Bikers are keeping the weight off with their new principles, it's very encouraging. However, I found the same problem as with the Bikers curry cookbook: a lot of steps, a lot of time. Fortunately, as a very experienced cook I know how to "tweak" methods in ways that save hassle and don't change the final result, but for novice cooks, some of the recipes could take a lot of time to prepare.
As for the book itself, I found the organisation less than wonderful. Whatever happened to sections for soups, mains, desserts etc? "Meals with Mates" and "Fab Fakeaways" may sound TV cool to some, but they don't help when you're looking for the soup recipe that was tucked in among completely different dishes. And the back index is often no help. They have entries for some of the ingredients, but not all, so if you want to find the fish recipes, you either have to remember the exact name, or page through until you run across them. No Fish category in a cookbook index, and yet "Mayonnaise" and "Onions" get categories to themselves? What is the "logic" behind this? Probably the same "logic" that deemed that categories should be printed in lower case, making them even harder to find.

Poor editorial planning makes this book much harder to use than it needs to be. Too much gloss, too little practicality for 5 stars. Also, I realise that since I bought it I haven't used it much (for the reasons explained above). For me, an unused cookbook was a waste of money, and since I have little money to waste, that removes another star.

The photos make the food reasonably appealing and they are generally quite sensible.

My only caution is that the serving sizes are quite small (at least to me). I usually have 60g of oats as a standard portion (also unlike what most books/articles seem to say I don't find that it keeps me full for that long - not compared to say eggs for instance). The book has 60g of oats to serve two people, even with half a small banana each (and three pecan halves), I would say that is still a very small portion.

Still, in general the calorie count is relatively low for most of the recipes so having a double portion is not so much of a problem as long as one admits that it's not as low calorie as it's made out to be.

In any case I approve of their sensible approach to weight loss and a healthier lifestyle.

A really great diet book to help loose weight and still eating amazing meals! The recipes are easy to follow and they taste amazing, I have made many of the recipes and have come out with great results. Its a good book for people who have cooked for years and who are just starting off cooking. None of the recipes have failed for me, they are pretty easy to do with quite simple ingredients but ones that work very well and bring out different great flavours.

Every recipe I've tried out of this and the earlier diet book has been superb. Even the ones I went "hmm not sure I'll like that". Even the ones the other half and the kids have gone "hmm not sure I'll like that." Always clean plates without a scrap left. Always requests for seconds. Can't ask for better than that.

Love Si and Dave, and this is another great collection of their diet recipes. Have tried one out already and it's a hit, so am keen to give some of the others a go. Especially the low-fat chocolate mousse - looks yummy!

This is the first recipe book I've read in a long time that is actually realistic. I like their common sense approach to dieting. Yes, most of us love food and many over indulge every now and then. But it's not a crime and a few days of eating with awareness again will soon get us back on track!
