After Carl "Hammer" Bobbit was sentenced to fifteen years in prison, he became obsessed with his daughter, Cataya.Through his best friend, Ron, he controls every aspect of her life. He regulates where she goes, what she watches on T.V and who she hangs with. He knows that Cataya hates him, but his fatherly instincts won't allow him to lighten up, or confess to his guilt.
Now that Cataya is a senior in high school, she has been living with her father's mother ever since her own mother had been found murdered twelve years prior. She has very little contact with her mother's side of the family, but has learned through them the truth surrounding her mother's unsolved death.
She proves that she's cut from the same cloth as her father when she formulates an icy plan that would punish Hammer for the role that he played in her mother's death. But she gets side tracked when Hammer escapes from prison and give the real meaning to Daddy Dearest.
The book dealt with main character Hammer. Hammer was serving time in prison for a crime he committed 15 years ago. Over the course of that time he becomes some what controlling with his daughter. In his mind he just wants to make sure that she is safe so he makes sure that he knows where she is, who shes with, and what shes doing. His daughter Cataya cant stand her father. Over the years she has found out some things about him that doesnt sit well with her.
This was my first time reading from this author. Overall I did enjoy this book it was a really good story line because it was kind of unique the things that were going on within the story. I wish that the story would have been better edited so that I could have given it a better rating, but sadly it had missing words, misspelled words, typos and that really took from many parts of the story because I had to reread it. Also some sections of the novel needed to be better seperated because its like one part stopped and it was jumping into the next section and then I had to reread like wasnt the book just someone else and now its here. Something else that bothered me was the introduction of certain characters its like they was just thrown out there and that kind of threw me off because I was like who is this person.
Again the story line was good, it had twist that shocked me because I didnt see any of that coming at all one thing really shocked me. There was drama and a whole lot of lies between the characters that caused them to feel certain ways about each other. This book also had me laughing at certain parts because of my favorite character who was El The One DeBarge like he really kept me laughing throughout the story. Overall really good story line.
Carl 'Hammer' Bobbit is a convict that loves his baby mama, LeLe, and his baby girl, Cataya. Hammer's ability to maintain control on the streets despite his incarceration gives him confidence that he's still able to dominate LeLe's life. When LeLe bucks the system, a tragedy occurs and there are two sides to the story...of which Cataya has only been told one. This causes resentment between father and daughter as well as Hammer's obnoxious overbearing behavior which further alienates them. There are alot of family secrets...but who's to know who's truth is really and truly the ultimate truth.
Daddy Dearest is a quiet read that has an uneventful flow as it unfolds and the characters react, interact, and transact. What started off as a basic tale of a dominate father quickly turns into something completely different. The unpredictability added just a tad of energy but by the time it occurred, there wasn't enough to stir up any vigor with the read. Love, allegiance, deceit, jealousy, and murder are key components in Kevin Bullock's 'Daddy Dearest.' 2.88
I would have given this book 5 stars if it was for so many typos. Even though it was drama filled and a little mystery going on, it was funny too. Cataya was being raised by her Grandmother due to her mother being killed when she was 5 years old and her father Carl "Hammer" Bobbit was in jail for another charge. Cataya hated her father because she always believed that her father had her mother killed by his best friend Ron. Cataya ran away from home after learning her father is making her stay with the one man who she believed killed her mother. Cataya uncle Ra-Ra is mentally ill but he has another personality that is entirely too funny. Raefal other alter-ego name is El "TheOne" DeBarge.
I have read two books by this author. The first book made me miss my stop on the train and the second book had me literally laughing out loud. This author does an excellent job of inserting the ultimate twist into his plots. I finished this book before my other book club members and had a hard time keeping it under wraps--especially when I knew that it was not going where they thought. I like how all lose ends were tied up at the end and look forward to reading many more books by this author.
This book was pretty good minus the grammar errors, there were more than a few. I didn't catch on to the killer until the end, I did not suspect the person who it was. Uncle Ra-Ra is straight crazy, literally. All about him and El the One DeBarge, they have me weak! Hopefully Cataya has learned to not judge a book by its cover. There is a part 2, I would definitely recommend the reading of this 1st book.
When I started this I was so annoyed with Taya going against everything her father wanted. After reading it and getting into it I was laughing my head off at Uncle RaRa's antics. I couldn't put it down because I was waiting to see what he'd say next. I really enjoyed this book and didn't think I would. When I read what was really going on I was taken for another loop. Can't wait for part 2.
