Everytime I feel a friendship beginning, something inevitably happens, and I become invisible again. Unseen. Ignored. It's been a part of me for so long that it's hard to imagine anything different. Then the Saguinox arrive, and my life is forever altered. People are fascinated by these beautiful creatures who look and talk like us. They're alluring. Seductive. Intoxicating. And two of them are going to my school. Rhys is everything I shouldn't want, but his eyes are like something from a memory. I can't help but be intrigued. He's the only one who can really see me. Some secrets you're better off not knowing. I had been found on a cold winter night with nothing but a blanket, and ashes covering my skin. My mother saved me from death, and took me in with love. But she couldn't save herself. I didn't think heroes were real anymore until the day Kaiden saved me. I couldn't believe in miracles until the day he revealed I was the miracle they had all been hoping for. Deep inside I always knew my past mattered.I just didn't know my life would depend on it.
THAT IS NOT A NICE WAY TO END A BOOK GODFREAKING DAMMIT. okay i am calming down... give a minute... MSPOIHGFAS;KJDGHPIH okay i'm good.. maybe..no i am good.
Song choice time! This one was a really hard one so the best that i can come up with right meow is "Soldier's Poem" by Muse, and "Dead" By My Chemical Romance.
First thoughts: This isn't a happy tale, honestly I went right into this just reading the summary. I thought this was going to be a story about finding acceptance, and finding love. BOY was I in for a huge ass surprise. This book made me feel as trapped and hopeless as I imagine Kenna felt in the book. I thought at for sure that I would just have to give up because it felt so heartbreaking at points that i wanted to give up. Only i kept going, i found reasons to hope, and before i knew it i was almost done with the book and i didn't even realize how much time had passed. My thoughts first thoughts though? Yes i would recommend this, would i say its for everyone? no. If you don't like books that have darker themes, not too dark where we are talking rape or anything like that but anyways it might not be for you. But if you are willing to try something new then yes. I say hell yes.
Plot: I really liked the idea that it was presenting. My first real experience with aliens in the book form has been the Lux Series and they are amazing, but from what has spurted from that, or i just discovered because of my liking for it, has usually been the friendly aliens that have another alien race are bad, but the ones we know are sweet and kind, and want to save the world. Well thats not the case here. I don't want to go into much because you know spoilers and all that. This was interesting, intriguing, but there were moments i was so lost that google maps couldn't find me directions. So i will admit there are a few of those moments but it becomes...sort of clearer? later. Don't stop that you from reading this because honestly it was two MAYBE and that is a BIG maybe three times. There was a lot of action in this book, its more adventure heavy then romance, but there is romance. Again i don't want to say anymore about the plot because i don't want to give anything away. Okay while i am at it, this isn't just aliens, this is so much more and i like the other different creatures/beings that are introduced.
Characters:
Kenna: is literally invisible people, think Princess Dairies movie with Anne Hathaway when she gets sat on by that guy in the courtyard, people literally do not see her until they bump into her, and i don't think that is ever explained...hmm now i am wondering why... anyways moving on. She is a sweet girl though, but she is lonely and i can't blame her to excited when a handsome new boy notices her, really sees her. Her conversations are a bit stranger than i suppose i was expecting from someone who doesn't have any friends, but she is charming, and pretty witty when she needs to be. She has a lot of compassion, and that worries me slightly for the future but can't say why ;) i think at times maybe she is a little too forgiving. (huh i am just wondering...about something else too...there were quite a few unanswered things that i want answered...) either way though when i expected her to bend and break, she didn't she was strong and a survivor.
Rhys: I don't know exactly how i feel about him right now. As any tall, black hair, glowing golden eye alien i am instantly attracted, i mean come on how can you not be? But he is charming with Kenna one moment and totally cold the next. There are a few incidents in this book where the POV shifts to his POV which is interesting and gives you a better insight to him. But i can tell that he cares for Kenna even if he is a hard person to crack. He is flirty with her, but when needs to be he is very serious and unforgiving in his mannerisms. i will admit he is a little hard to like.
Kaiden: Kaiden on the other hand, well i sort of fell in love with him the moment we met him. I have a soft spot for Gingers (also i might be convinced they are going to take over the world one day and i surround myself with them so that i will be safe...i am not crazy...nope...not at all) He is funny, and just good old fashion boy-ish charm with being a man while he is at it. He is going to be break my heart and i know it because well it won't be his fault. But i love him, i really do.
Kay so the ending? well obviously i was pissed. Well i am pissed. freaking steaming...anyways damn cliffhanger, being all cliffhanger, mother freaking god....okay seriously i will be stewing over this for awhile....anyways in GENERAL there were a LOT, ALOT ALOT of unanswered questions that i am dying to know the answer to. So yes i will be reading the next one in this series, as soon as possible i might add, i don't think its out right now but will be checking that out.
Um i am starting to hate this part. Ugh alright i do a blog, don't get annoyed, i gave you my entire review here, i am not shoving this down your throat, but if you have read this or you want to wait until the squeal is out because of my last minute rant and looking for some cool indie authors books to read you can check out a bunch and a half on my blog here is the link feel free to stop by if you want, if not well okay : http://theviolethourbookreviews.wordp...
I have a bone to pick with this author about the horrible character that is the love interest in this book. He lied to her, manipulated her, drugged her, kidnapped her, stripped her clothes off, and locked her up as a slave in a prison where she had to face the possibility of her own torture and death on a daily basis. Then after he does all these despicable things to her, when he invades her dreams she runs into his arms and makes out with him? WTF? What kind of message is this sending to the young, impressionable girls who are the target audience for these books? That it is okay to stay with abusive men who treat you like dirt and do horrible things to you, as long as they are attractive? Because that seems to be the only thing he has going for him. It makes me sick.
The only reason I felt this book deserved more than one star was because the premise is interesting and it gets off to a decent start. But by halfway through the book I was very disheartened. I kept waiting for there to be some grand plot reveal that explained why the love interest was acting like such a jackass, but no, he wasn't acting, he really was a dick. I hope he gets brutally murdered in the next book, (which I will not be reading.) And I hope she gains some self-respect and stays away from that loser. Ugh.
I enjoyed this book. It had it's 'I want to smack my head against something solid.' moments. Such as:
The entire alien race being in possession of supermodel worthy looks. Is it impossible not to have ridiculously good looking characters? I'm tired of it. I'm finding myself questioning the credibility of the romance in all of these books because they focus more on appearance rather than personality or actions. Which brings me to my second point.
Rhys has as much personality as a bag of hammers. All I know of him is that he is attractive, he likes Kenna he's remorseful for his past actions, but as far as I can tell it's only conveniently after he meets Kenna. ...That's really about it.
Not to mention the part where he kidnapped her, but I'm hoping it's elaborated on more in the second book. So I won't get too angry about it. She hasn't fallen in love with him or anything, so it's not much of an issue,
Now for the good stuff.
The world building was excellent. I had a pretty clear idea of how things operated and what the aliens were about, their motivations and such. So I wasn't confused at any point.
It was well paced. I often find books go either painfully slow or too fast to keep up with. The former leaves me skipping ahead to see how far away the action is, or to see if I can get away with skipping entire sections. Sometimes even to see if it's worth continuing. The latter just leaves me confused and maybe re-reading to see what the hell I missed. (Doesn't usually help either.) So I was really happy with the pacing in this book.
The story itself was unique and the romance did not consume the plot. Which was a pleasant surprise. I generally read books expecting loose plot and heavy romance. it seems to be all I get now. (Maybe I'm picking the wrong books? Damn synopsises are so misleading.)
I only really remember the one other alien race, but I loved them, I think it was hinted that there were more. They were new and interesting. However I find it hard to believe that there would be so many humanoid alien races.
Kaiden. Now HE had personality. I'd like to see something happen there. I have a soft spot for gingers, even if it isn't natural. He's a comedian, usually at inappropriate times. He's caring and brave. Also he is human, not just his species, but in general. He isn't perfect, doesn't seem like he even tries to be. I love it. It was a bit if a downer that he was also hot. It would make my day if he was average and she picked him anyway. Sadly, I'll have to keep up my hunt for such a protagonist. And I don't mean the female 'I'm so plain, what does he see in me?' type. Feel free to point me in the right direction if you know of any.
*Received a copy from the author for an honest review*
I really liked this one. For a debut novel, this was really, really good. The beginning of the prologue is a little confusing when you first read it but as you read the novel you start understanding it. What I really like about it was that it's different from other paranormal reads out there. The plot was unique and the characters were lovable. The heroine is very brave and courageous. Although she sees herself kidnapped and treated as a slave, her first instinct while being rescued is to help rescue the others. Instead of fleeing, she decides that taking the risk of being caught and killed is worth it. The ending of this novel sort of leaves you with a cliff hanger; which makes me want to read the second one even more. This is a debut that you would not want to miss out on. I can already tell this will be one of my favorite series.
I would recommend it to those who enjoy a good action packed paranormal read.
Mari Arden has a fresh voice and does a fantastic job brining this entertaining story to life. Her characters live in a world far from ordinary where an alien race has made themselves known to Earth and are generously welcomed into today’s society.
Kenna is a likable character with a mysterious past that we learn right along with her. Though she spends most of her time alone and is easily ignored, Kenna is not one to sit around and take pity on herself.
Then enters Rhys. Rhys is attractive, intriguing and it is not long before Kenna is paying attention to him. He keeps to himself at first, but when we get into the meat of the plot his true character is revealed and he really stands out.
Flame is an enjoyable read and moves along at a steady pace. Combined with a solid plot and well-developed characters I recommend the read.
I received an ARC of this book for review and I absolutely loved it. I think that Arden did a fabulous job at creating something new and unique with this one. I can honestly say I have never read anything quite like it! I loved reading about Kenna and everything she encountered. I can't wait to read about the next part of her journey!
Cool. Some of this novel was a new concept for me and totally kick ass. Other stuff was a little dry and slow. I don't know why she has a thing for Rhys, other than he was the first person to actually 'see' her. Kaiden seems like a much more better catch.
Holy Cow!!!! I was so not expecting this book to be as it is. It really kept you going until the end... and then... A really great cliffhanger. You know there has got to be another book. Really left you hanging. I'm so ready for the next one.
Totally loved this book. Im not usually one for space creatures but this one was awesome. Chomping at the bit for book 2 (which I refuse to read the exert at the end of this book because that will only make it worse lol)
I honestly thought that I would enjoy this book. I really did. But the opposite was true. I did not like it. I found the plot to be slow and not interesting. I couldn't finish the book, I tried, but I just couldn't. The writing was really good, but I could not finish because of the plot.
If you are looking for an entirely new and unique read that stands out from the crowd then look no further! Flame is unlike anything i have ever read. It is truely out of this world!
I bought this book because I really enjoyed her other book "One". I originally gave the book 4 stars and was almost ready to give it 5 stars. Here is the thing though, I dropped the book to a 1 star rating. I really did love the book, thought it was interesting, of course, it did have a weird change from where it started out. In fact, I read the book in one morning.
Here is my reasoning behind the 1 star. The story is not finished. The book ends, waiting for another installment. Of course, as it has become the norm for digital books, there will be 3 books. The issue I have is this book was written in 2013 and that was 4 years ago with no more installments. In fact, there have been no other novels written since 2013. As I have experienced in the past, with similar situations, when such a long length of time has passed, there usually will not be a follow up. So, why give a good story a good rating when the author will not finish the story.
If you are going to write a novel, write the novel. If you feel the entire novel is worth $6 then charge $6 or $9 or whatever for the entire novel, but don't write a partial book and then stop. If you run out of ideas, then don't publish until you can publish a complete novel. Even if you publish in installments, which I absolutely despise, again it has become the norm of our society, at least follow through with the book. Therefore, that is why I have dropped the star rating from 4 or 5 star to 1.
If in the future, which I highly doubt, the story ever has the remaining installments published, I will change my rating, but for now, unless you enjoy reading partial stories, I would not read this one.
I'm conflicted in this book. It wasn't garbage, but.. it wasn't spectacular. It was a quick read, it did hold my interest for the most part. Some areas drag really bad. At first, I got excited about aliens, in a high school, love... real sci-fi. But then it took this whole magical, kidnapping twist that really was hard to like. It's as if every YA paranormal romance that is a hit right now, is folded into one. It didn't seem to completely fit, sometimes things are just too much. I was absolutely loving it, when it was just aliens. Then I got bored when they mixed, then I loved it when it was magic. I feel there could have been two separate books there. Your "hero" Rhys is very hard to like. Other than that, not much character development. I feel like the book would have been better had it stuck with only aliens, or only magic. Blending the two is like a horrible hybrid gone wrong.
The plot of this book is quite unexpected. From the blurb, I thought it was just a high school love story/triangle, like the typical paranormal/sci-fi YA books but surprisingly, it wasn't. However, this book also had some flaws. The things I liked: The unexpected plot lines. Kaiden. The disturbingly sadistic nature of the saguinox.
Things I did not like: Rhys. The Rhys and Kenna "love". Way to fast for me to believe that these two actually liked each other. Kenna still liking Rhys after he manipulated her and practically sentenced her to torture and death. I mean seriously, who would really not hate someone for that? The present-tense writing. The underuse of supporting characters. Hell, all the characters apart from Kenna.
Overall, it was an okay book, not something I would be desperately wanting to get the sequel of, even with the 'OMG' ending. 3 stars.
Not what I expected...From the description, I thought this would be one alien race vs. human race story with a romance aspect revolving around two from each race...but it turned out to be so much more. This book is jammed packed with action and adventure that keeps its readers at the edge of their sit. There are also many humorous and horrific moments that really made me LOL and squirm. I loved the world that the author created with many different magical alien beings and I also enjoyed that transformation of the heroine. The only negative comment that I have is that Kenna's and Rhys' interaction was too short that it didn't really make sense why they became so obsessed with each other. All in all, a very enjoyable read and i'm looking forward to the next installment
I thought this book was pretty good. It has both sci-fi and magic in it. Kenna was an OK heroine. I think her obsession with Rhys was stupid because he didn't help her at all. But she still wanted to be with him and for him to love her. I wanted to reach through the book and slap her!!! He just let her. Kayden though....I would be all over that. I know a love triangle is coming and that she will probably choose Rhys but I hope not. He's sooo stupid. The only thing she likes about him is that he's hot. But she 18 and this is her first love/lust thing. I will read the next book and hope with all my might that she gets smarter and tougher.
I finished this a week or so ago but haven't gotten to do the review until now, but what really strikes me is how I still cannot get this story out of my head. It's an incredible read. Crazy creativity and an amazing story explodes on the pages of Flame. The world building, the unique characters, the plot twists --bunches of "I so did not see that coming"-- and loads of mystery pretty much will glue you to your Kindle until completion. I'd go into more detail, but I don't want to give anything away. So put out some snacks for the kiddos and lock yourself in your room when you get this baby!
I've never read a book about aliens before so I wasn't really sure about this one. The cover caught my eye so I decided to try it. It wasn't what I was expecting at all. I totally got sucked into the world the author created. The idea of it is pretty awesome. I'd like her to have added MORE of it, however if you've read the story you know she can't because of the situation the character is put in. I'm hoping the author reads this and knows that we want to see MORE of the world she created and MORE awesome scenes between Kenna and Rhys and Kenna and Kaiden. This series has SO much potential! Can't wait for the next one!!!
Good book but I am getting a bit tried of the heroine being played with by her boyfriend/whatever he claims to be to her and then he kidnaps her and throws her in jail and tells her to get out herself... (Sorry for the run-on but I am frustrated.) I hope to god that he does something like EXPLAIN A GODDAMN THING to her... or dies... either one... I like her even though she likes the wrong guy. She makes the book good.
Sidenote: She should fall for Kaiden because even though he was just introduced he already has more promise than Rhys.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I loved the beginning of this book because it had me hooked. Then sometime after Kenna is kidnapped...the story just seemed like it was dragging on for me. Skimmed the last 30% of the book (which is a first I must say). To show just much I found the last half of this book uneventful or exciting - I wrote this review before I even finished the book. -___- Still debating whether to bother with the second book or not.
The story was solid, a pretty big feat for YA novels this day and age. But I only found some of the characters worth paying attention to, and Kenna and Rhys were not on that list. I couldn't for the life of me understand why Kenna would even see Rhys as a viable love interest after everything that happened. To me, the story should have been about Kaiden, Chloris, and Nymphora. They were all way better characters.
This was over so quickly I'm not even sure what happened. I mean I know what was happening, alien invasion, intergalactic elemental magic, blood sucking aliens but blimey, where was the chapter development? Where was the plot? The only reason I kept reading until the end was that it was over so quickly I didn't even have time to stop. Don't imagine I'll be reading the sequel.
Awesome,action-packed book with lovable (and hateable characters- meaning crazy-psycho guy). I REALLY REALLY hope there's not gonna be a love triangle in the next one cuz i HATE THOSE THINGS. But i really wanna get my hands on the next one, no matter if there's a triangle or not.
