Nope, this is a fail. Everything happens way too quickly, there’s no time for her to cycle through true emotions... he’s gone, takes the dog, leaves the child... she gets the dog back, starts a new job, meets a new man. He wants to visit, she puts up a stink, but allows it. He wants to slow down the process, and she’s done. The end. This all happens over the course of a few weeks.
Thank you to the author for my Kindle edition that I won in a Goodreads Giveaway.
“The wise man knows that he knows nothing, the fool thinks he knows all.” I'm sorry to say this phrase was my favorite part of the book. I think there was a lot of potential and a lot of different ways this story could have gone, but I think that is what was the biggest problem I had with it. It was too much. Too much, too fast. From the way it was told, or at least my interpretation of it anyway, is that everything takes place in a matter of about two weeks at most. I wasn't able to connect with any of the characters, and there were a lot of them. You don't really get a chance to love or hate any of them. The events, the husband, the new job, the recovering alcoholic, the daughter, the aunt, the old house with a history, the new fiancée, the wildfires all pieces that could make great stories but not all together to make one. Could have just been about the main character and her husband, their story, how they met and what happened along the way. The ending could have led into more of a series - the next stage, and then even another book about the old aunt and the secrets of her house. it seemed like the author was trying way too hard to make a great story and could have, but it felt more like a ride on the scrambler at a carnival. There was a lot of potential, it just didn't all come together very well.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I like the opportunity to read books by authors I don't know and I appreciate receiving this one. It was an interesting book--I liked the characters in particular. While the storyline may have progressed as I anticipated, it was not tedious or boring. The setting and supporting characters were quirky enough, and I liked how the protagonist's career in social work informed he story.
I won this in a Goodreads giveaway. Unfortunately, this book didn’t really resonate with me. In my humble opinion, I felt that everything happened much too quickly and there was a lack of connection between the characters.
The main character accidentally uncovers a secret truth which threatens the very foundation of her family. She is a strong woman who strives to find answers, no matter the cost. This book was thoroughly believable and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it to everyone!
