Karen does not conform to the image most people have of a Guantanamo interrogator. She is nonjudgmental, emotionally perceptive, modest, and kind. An active environmentalist and a dedicated cyclist, she is devoted to recycling and to her garden. She puts on educational puppet shows for children. During her interrogations, she brought detainees tea in china cups and greeted them with the heartfelt words, in Arabic, “peace be upon you.”
