This was one of the books I inherited from Mother's collection. I grabbed it on my way to the Bishop's Storehouse thinking it might be interesting. I was so surprised. It was very touching and very good. I loved his testimony as well as his take on patriotism and our obligation in that regard. I was very impressed! Probably my best book of the summer.
This book was chosen by someone from my book group. I put off reading until almost the last second. This book ended up being suprisingly good. I learned more about Senator Jake Garn and his family. He talks about family experiences, political undertakings and tells us all why he believes in God through all of these life experiences. The book jumped back and forth through time, and was a bit confusing at times, but ultimately worth the read.
A great book by a great man! Such a boost to read of his testimony of family, tolerance, love, the family, man, freedom & democracy, the power of the priesthood and testimony of the gospel. I read my son an excertp about how Senator Garn loved his son unconditionally--even though it was difficult.
Senator Jake Garn was a hero in an earlier era. He’s 90 now, but his influence lives on. In this stunning memoir, he talks about the tragic death of his first wife, his terms as a city commissioner, mayor, and senator for eighteen years, and his concerns for his drug-addicted son. The most spectacular chapter involves his flight aboard the space shuttle, and his views looking down on earth. The most emotional chapter tells about his donation of a kidney to his daughter. He considered it a privilege! He talks about his decision to leave the senate and spend more time with his family, and I remember my own disappointment at the time. He was a great senator! The heart of the book, however, is his love of his church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and all his “why I believe” anecdotes tie back to this. His book is a complete page-turner, and inspiring besides.
I really appreciated the honesty and candor with which Senator Garn shared his story. He was not afraid to share the truly difficult moments in his life—moments that made him who he is today. Many people try to hide the blemishes and share only their positive moments of growth. However, we are the sum of all our experiences—the good and the bad. His experiences dealing with his drug-addicted son were both heart wrenching and inspiring. I am a better person for reading this book.
I wasn't going to read the book, but once started I couldn't put it down. He had many challenges and trials in his life and weathered them with humility and trust in the Lord. It was inspiring and vastly interesting.
