In her debut novel, “Into You,” Riley J Ford takes an interesting premise and turns it into one heckuva good book.
The writing is sharp. The characters are well developed. The story moves along at a crisp pace.
There’s a ton of humor in this book: just-plain-funny humor; dark humor; romantic humor; even tragic humor. If Ford was out to showcase how well she can master the subtle nuances between them, she can color me convinced.
But it isn’t all fun and games. Sure, there’s a murder to solve, but Ford’s story really delves into some dark and weighty places along the way that make the murder seem somewhat tame in comparison (at least until the murder is later described). Although readers will be satisfied with the ending, “Into You” isn’t all sunshine and lollipops, with a cute little HEA to top it off.
And kudos to Ford for that. There’s no valid reason for YA and/or paranormal romance books to habitually and systematically ignore all of the realities of teenage life except for the angst … yet it happens far too often.
“Into You” is a well written, wonderful read that I highly recommend to YA, PNR, and teen mystery fans.
Riley J. Ford has crafted a young adult novel that is impossible to put down, and almost as impossible to classify. Is it paranormal? Is it comedy? Is it mystery? Is it romance? I think it's all these things and more: it's amazing!
Winter has a strange superpower: when she kisses people, she can hear their thoughts. At first, this looks like a fun way to get Winter to experiment with her sexuality, but when one of her friends winds up murdered at a track meet, Winter's superpower suddenly carries great responsibility: if she can kiss the killer, she can bring about justice. But where should she start? And what if people are able to protect their thoughts from her somehow?
Winter embarks on a sometimes hilarious, often emotional quest for justice, becoming a kissing bandit as a matter of course. This book will keep you turning the pages, hoping that Winter doesn't wind up in hot water.
Before I babble and squeal, let me tell you something about the author. Miss Riley J. Ford is awesome! This is the second Ford book I've read and as usual, she has impressed me with her talent in storytelling.
Into You introduces us to Winter Reynolds, who, for the very first time, had kissed a boy and had discovered that she can read his mind when he touched his lips with hers. At first, she thought, Ethan just whispered out loud, but the second time, she really heard Ethan's not so romantic thoughts on her. He even had the nerve to call her a "ho"!!
With this revelation, Winter's normal life took on a huge turn. She couldn't tell her mom how this happened, but she was glad she had Miranda whom she could count on. But when her so-called friend asked her to kiss a boy, Winter soon realized that her friend might be using her to know if the boy actually liked Miranda.
A new girl and a boy from Winter's past came to town and soon her life turned upside down. A murder took place and she decided to use her new ability to track down the murderer. Could she really kiss every boy in her school just to get into the mind of the criminal? My oh my, oh my.
This is an engrossing read. It really didn't have any dull moment nor boring escapade. The setting was fast-paced and well thought-of. I was able to relate with Winter and couldn't help but agree with her decisions in handling her powers. It's good that she has a good head on her shoulders and believes that with great power comes with great responsibility. Something that her best friend should have had in the beginning. While I may be over thirty years old, (yeah, i'm not that young anymore), I could still see myself in her when I was in my teens, daydreaming about the cutest boy in school. I think I may have a crush on Jason Stumblemeyer right now. ha-ha!
Into You is highly recommended to teens and young & new adults alike. Satisfaction guaranteed! My rating for this Riley J. Ford great piece of work: 4 bookmarks!
I actually enjoyed every kissing moment of it.. Seriously :)
Fun and well written. Some of it is rather predictable, but it is written for young adults so I wasn't expecting overly deep themes! Good read with suspense, plot twists and a nice resolution.
This was in a book bundle entitled Pandora. It is about High Schoolers. Winter lives with her single mom and they struggle financially. Miranda has been her best friend since pre-school. Miranda is from a wealthy family. Since both drive and they don't talk like it is their last year at school, I assume they are Juniors or older Sophomores. Winter hasn't dated, Miranda has been seeing Billy and Winter can't stand him or the way he treats Miranda. Winter has been crushing on Ethan who works at the mall and she finally gets the nerve to give him her phone # and they double date to the movies with Miranda and Billy. Winter is very happy until Ethan kisses her. She can hear his every thought while their lips touch and none of it is complimentary. The date ends early. When Winter finally confides in Miranda, Miranda finds it hilarious and dares Winter to kiss different guys and share what she learns. One guy works at their favorite fast food place and in the quick kiss she learns that Victor is in love with Miranda and what a really great guy he is. The next is a total stranger and older guy on the street. Winter learns that he is planning how to propose to his girlfriend and he yells at Winter. On the beach one evening Miranda suggests that they see if the kissing ESP works on women and the 2 of them kiss. It works and Winter learns that Miranda and Billy had sex and it wasn't very good and they didn't use protection. School starts back up and Winter and Miranda are part of the Track Team. There are 2 new students in their grade and both go out for track. Annika is a very frail blonde who spends her time with the other new one - Ethan. Only Ethan had been there Freshmen year and was the Klutzy geek with thick glasses that everyone made fun of. Now he is the tallest, cutest, fastest running boy at school. At their 1st away track meet, Annika is found dead with her underwear missing in the girls bath room. Miranda wants Winter to kiss everyone on the team to learn who the murderer is. She is tempted, but she and Ethan are starting a relationship. When Ethan leaves town, Miranda talks Winter into having a kissing booth at the school carnival and to challenge the track team to help raise money for a memorial for Annika. Winter feels unclean by some of what she learns. Even the girls feel obligated to let Winter kiss them. But she doesn't manage to kiss all of the team. The school is calling her the kissing slut and Ethan returns to hear it all. He goes ballistic because he had not kissed Winter because she said she wanted to wait. Miranda quits speaking to Winter and Ethan has broke up with her, and she feels guilty over Annika's death. If she had been a better friend to her would she still be alive? When Winter can't take being estranged from Ethan she goes over and into his room and he demands she leaves. She insists she be allowed to explain. She explains about the kissing ESP and that she was trying to find Annika's killer. He disbelieves her. She kisses him and then tells him things she learned about him in the kiss that she could not have known. He forgives her, wants to help her, and wants her to find Annika's killer, he liked Annika as a friend. Miranda becomes friends with Winter again and the 3 of them make plans to find the killer at the upcoming Home Coming Dance. Ethan asks Winter and Miranda buys her a great dress and all the accessories. Miranda broke up with Billy and moved on to Victor the fast food worker, and finds out Winter was right about him and he treats her like a queen. Even asks her to marry him when she shares that she is carrying Billy's child. Everything goes wrong at the dance. Miranda was talking to Victor and not watching Winter. Ethan misreads her 2nd dance with a guy and storms out. She runs to the bathroom and the murderer follows her, locks them in and begins to assault her physically and sexually. Ethan cools off in the parking lot and returns to not being able to find Winter. When the girls bath room is locked, in a rage he breaks it down, beats the crap out of her attacker while others call 911. She learns everything about Annika's murder and that he intended her to be his 2nd victim. But how can they tell the police what she learned from the kiss ESP? Is assault charges enough for this monster? How can she give Annika and her family the justice they deserve? She doesn't want to out her ability, she knows her life will never be the same again. And Ethan manages to think of colors when they kiss and she feels like she is dancing and floating in sunset colors. Can their unique relationship survive if she is used as a weapon in fighting crime?

Winter Reynolds has spent all summer screwing up the courage to leave her phone number with the cute guy at the mall. Now, they are at the movies and he comes in for a kiss and it’s everything she dreamed about until…he says she needs a breath mint. Only his lips are on hers and they haven’t moved. What? Winter’s life is about to be turned upside down by a super power that sounds at first like it might be pretty cool, but turns out to so not be.
When I read the blurb for this I thought it sounded pretty interesting even though I’m not a huge fan of YA. Teenagers do such dumb stuff and can be so self absorbed a lot of time, so I tend to avoid YA. Not always, but usually. I’m so glad I picked this one up. The writing is wonderful and Winter is a pretty interesting kid. Her best friend Miranda, on the other hand, is a piece of spoiled work, but deep down she’s got a good heart. There’s the typical teen angst in this story with crushes, romance, high school shenanigans and bullies, but Winter also has to deal with a murdered girl who was becoming her friend.
Miranda convinces Winter she needs to use her super power of hearing people’s thoughts when her lips touch theirs to find out who killed Annika. A budding romance with Jason makes it difficult for Winter to go around kissing people trying to find out who on the track team murdered poor Annika especially since she told Jason she wants to take it slow. In other words, she doesn’t want to kiss him and get his life story downloaded the second her lips touch his. She wants to get to know him the right way.
Some of the Homecoming Dance scene was a bit off and took too long to get through, but for the most part this story kept me enthralled. It was paranormal and romance mixed with a mystery and it was a good one. The kissing super power though, I’m not sure I’d want that one though it would come in handy for filtering out creeps.
This was a really fast read for me...I pretty much read the whole book in a couple of hours. I was hooked when the first chapter started out with Winter kissing a guy and unknowingly begins reading his thoughts! Her newfound power and the ways she uses it turned out to be pretty funny sometimes.
But things take on a more serious feel when a friend gets murdered. Winter decides it's her duty to find out who did it...even though it means she will probably end up kissing a murderer!
I liked Winter, though I found her to be kind of judgmental at times. There were actually a couple of things she said that I found a bit offensive. Most of the time, though, she was OK.
There were a lot of ups and downs in this book. Winter has one best friend, Miranda, and they go in and out of fighting because of things Winter has found out with her kissing power. Miranda says some pretty nasty things to Winter, and I didn't think she did enough to be redeemed, but I guess things are like that when you're a teenager.
Winter also has a love interest, Jason. This is kind of hard to maintain, because Winter is running around kissing a lot of boys while purposely trying to avoid kissing Jason! But the two work things out when she shares the truth with him.
Into You moved quickly and had a lot of funny moments and heart. The author did a great job of not revealing too many hints too early about who the real killer was. In fact, I had to suspect a few different people before I decided who was guilty!
The only problem I had with the writing is that it was very repetitive at times. The author told stories and used the exact same phrasing to do it several times throughout the book. This was distracting, but I pushed through it.
This is a unique take on the mind-reading trope, and I recommend it!
I had the great pleasure of narrating the audiobook of Into You. :)
I'll echo a reviewer below by saying that this book defies standard categories. It's a humor/murder-mystery/romance/paranormal/young adult (but not really YA) book. I had more fun producing this audiobook than I expected to when I first saw the cover. It was a delight from page 1. I honestly enjoy this author, and cannot believe that this was her first novel!
Man, that book was funny. At first I thought the Winter was a bit of a bitch, but then I realized, 'oh, she is just a teenager.' The whole book was one big oxymoron, but in a great way. Solve the murder by kissing everyone? Come on, the plot was so out of there it has to be good. I totally dug it. And I am not generally a fan of these books. This author is brilliant. She was able to balance the ridiculousness between the seriousness with the finesse of an tightrope walker. Tilting back and forth dramatically before finishing with ease. Worth the money.
Winter Reynolds never really wanted much during Summer vacation. Just a little harmless fun. But instead of making out with some cute guy in the movie theatre, she discovers a new talent - kissing people allows her to read their mind!
Together with her best friend, Miranda, they set up a range of cringe worthy experiments. Suddenly Winters teen perception of people are challenged.
When the new girl, Annika Sorens, is found murdered in the changing room her gift is seriously put to the test.
I thought this was going to be really juvinile but I really enjoyed it. I think it works so well because it is a bit different, it explores a lot of teenage issues without being too obvious and simplistic (also it resounds with older audiences i.e. me because it reminded me of being that age). But it was also an interesting mystery in which you suspect everyone, and it had very likeable and very unlikable characters. It was just a fun, relaxing and easy read.
Really intriguing mystery by my newest favorite author. I couldn't put this book down. The main character, Winter, can read minds of people she kisses. She tries to solve her friend's murder, with lots of twists along the way. Oh, and there is also a great romance! Very fun and entertaining book. Recommend!
Parts of this book felt too young and other parts felt too mature for young readers. All in all this book is really good. Really engaging and really entertaining. I loved the story and it was really addicting and I enjoyed the book all in all.
Very interesting story plot. I loved it. really held my interest. awesome teen novel despite the fact I'm far off being a teen :) trying to recommend it to my soon to be teen to read!
I received this book as part of the Amazon Kindle compilation - Pandora but, like the others in the collection, will be reviewing it individually.
I almost put this one down after the first chapter. I'm not really into Y/A romance type stories. But the writing was good so I kept reading. I'm glad I did.
It's totally awkward to be able to read minds when kissing someone and that led to some pretty amusing moments as well as some awful ones. Using this sort of ability to solve a murder adds another whole level of craziness to the story. But it all worked out in the end.
I really enjoyed this. The writing was beautiful, the character development was fantastic. I just really loved this story. It is typical teen drama stuff, but it was fun. It took a really dark turn towards the end, which I found hard to read but I coped.
Trigger warning: There is graphic rape in this, so if you don't like to read that, skip that chapter. I personally think it is needed for the story and I thought it raises awareness of this horrible thing.
I was thinking of giving this book to my 12 year old granddaughter because she wanted to read a mystery book like grandma. I searched on the internet and this was listed as a "tween mystery" book. IT DEFINITELY IS NOT FOR TWEENS! Very adult language and material. I was so glad that I decided to read it first. It was an interesting book but not for tweens. I'd rate over 18 years of age.
This was an interesting story, something different anyways. I liked Jason, but wasn't sure if Winter really deserved him. She tells him no years prior because he's ugly and clumsy. Now he's attractive and all the girls want him. Very conceited to me. I'm not really sure if she grew much as a character considering she commented (somewhere) when they were younger, that she knew he was a nice guy, yet still said no to the dance. And she's constantly gushing about how hot he is and the most wanted guy in school.
Miranda seemed the type that would want you as a friend or only acknowledge you if you were of use to her. I wasn't really a fan of her either.
Questions/Comments:
So Winter kissed the one hot dog guy at the beginning while on a date. She hears, in her mind, him commenting about her breath. She then kisses the one guy outside of the club and sees, by the sound of it, a good chunk of his life. The first guy she gets more 'present' type thoughts, the second guy, years worth of stuff he's dealt with. They kiss and nothing. "Sometimes it takes a second to kick in. We'll probably need to do it for a bit longer." I don't get that comment at all. Why would she say that when it seemed instant with the guys?
Important question!! After telling Miranda about her gift, she wants to test it out to see if it works on females too. So she sees/hears/feels other people's thoughts when she kisses them. Why did she never try kissing on the cheek or something? Just went straight to the lips.
I get that Kirby was the track team leader? or something like that. But how was he able to get away with all the assy comments towards the others, the touchy feeling crap and whatnot?
Miranda and Winter are at the fast food place meeting with Victor. "I glance over to see him staring at Miranda. He has an expression of utmost longing. Weird. Maybe he's hungry for her fries." Really? His utmost longing was for food? And not Miranda? That was kind of dumb there.
Jason and Annika are jogging together and obviously Winter is jealous. But she seriously thinks that Annika's feelings towards him will change because of a date he had years prior?
Winter wants to kiss Annika. Has Annika really done anything to make Winter think negatively of her? I mean she's the new kid at school, looking for friends. I guess it's apart of the jealousy thing Winter has going on but still. Anyways, they're hanging out, painting nails and whatnot and chatting about how people are towards each other, when it comes to expressing themselves, per country. Winter is explaining how some people, who are family, might kiss or give a peck to each other, "like the kind you'd give on a cheek. Nothing sexual. Like this." Why did Winter think a "small peck" (her words) on the lips was considered sexual?
After seeing all the crap that Annika has had to deal with growing up, Winter automatically assumes (for whatever reason) that Annika is looking for someone to save her. That was really annoying. I mean of course Winter can't just make everything all hunky dory, but come on! "I don't have it in me to her friend." Eventually, "...she pours out all her troubles on me and hopes I can fix them." I didn't like that way of thinking. Everyone has issues in one way or another. I don't think (at this point) Winter even deserved to be Annika's friend.
FYI, it IS possible to have someone kiss you without their tongue ending up in your mouth. Unless you want that of course. That's what teeth are for! haha
The cops in this story were a complete joke. I'm sure there are ones like this but good god! I can't imagine having to deal with people like them. I mean the questions they ask, and then only want yes or no answers. Then not letting a person explain things, because of course not everything is black and white. They didn't really seem to take anything serious. I didn't like them.
I'm surprised that Winter never told Miranda or Jason what the cops told her about people saying her and Billie had dated. Or Jason and Annika dating. The cop mentions that and nothing else is said...
Miranda is trying to talk Winter into looking for the killer with her kissing power. "Our friend is dead." Really? I don't remember Miranda and Annika being friends. I'm surprised Winter didn't comment about that.
"Members of the track team mill about, discussing this unusual carnival stand..." Those could have only been the girls right? I mean high school guys wondering about anything besides when it'll be their turn for a kiss from a pretty girl, is shocking! I wouldn't say it was an unusual stand either. I mean whenever you watch tv and theirs a school carnival involved, there's usually a kissing booth, at least the movies I've seen.
So, I don't remember their name but twins on the track team, brought mace cans onto school property. They hid them in their socks. "Hidden tightly in their socks, until one of them accidentally sprayed herself in the fact while tying a shoe." How did it get in their face if the cans were in their sock? Is this a knee sock? A regular ankle one, I can't see getting in your face unless your head is right next to your shoe or maybe the can went off and you got some on your hand, then rubbed your eyes. Sadly I have had that happen. Not fun.
FYI, it's Wicked Witch of the West (not east) and Good Witch of the North (not west).
What size were Darcy's boobs before and after the boob job? I mean she was able to get them enlarged without her family or friends noticing? Yet everyone knows she's got giant ones. I mean she's worried that her parents will find out she spent her college money on them.
Important question: We know that Annika was killed with her shorts around her ankles and her underwear missing. We then are told they'd been ripped off. If they were 'ripped' off, how was Darcy wearing them? I mean I can't imagine either her or Kirby stitching them up to wear.
At the homecoming dance, Winter is feeling strange. She's dancing with Kirby and wondering if he put something in her water. How? It was a water bottle, the last in fact. I doubt they were have them sitting there with no lid. And it's not like he would have known that she was going to grab the last one. Something had to have been in it though considering when he's holding her against her will, she doesn't talk or lash out at him in any way. Yet she continues dancing with him? Her feet continue to drag-dance around. Why not just let him drag you completely? I didn't get that. That whole scene just confused me.
While she's in the bathroom, someone comes in. She doesn't know who. Assumes it's Darcy. Either way, why in the world does she open the door? No sense there. I mean she's scared because she knows that Kirby killed Annika and Miranda and Jason are both gone.
How was the track coaches wife arrested? I mean they didn't have any real/physical proof she did anything. Only the one comment.

Into You by Riley J. Ford takes a humorous concept and quickly turns into a twisty murder mystery. I kept getting frustrated with some of the peripheral characters, then a few pages later, the main characters were also getting frustrated. It was like Ford was inside my head. This one was really well done. Don't let the premise fool you, the story line works with these characters.
The first thing I thought when I started reading this book was, "Oh my God, it's in present tense." I was already a little put off by the very CG-looking book cover and reading fiction in present tense is sort of a pet peeve of mine. My mind was having visions of Fifty Shades of Grey or other equally difficult to read books I've subjected myself to over time.
But I read on and found that, amazingly, Riley J. Ford has actually managed to pull off present tense. It was a bit awkward at first, as it always is when your mind is expecting things in past tense out of habit and they aren't, but the book isn't difficult to read. It isn't awkward and it flows quickly along, dragging us along with Winter, frequently thinking, "No, don't! You'll get caught!" or "Oh my God, I'd be so embarrassed!" I quickly found myself wrapped up in her antics, worried and chagrined for her.
The book is engaging to the reader even though, as a woman in my mid-twenties, I'm probably not the target audience. Throughout the book, I find myself anxious for the protagonist's plight as she tries to identify her friend's murderer. I can't help but laugh as she's nudged time after time to use her powers (the ability to read minds when she touches lips with someone... guy or girl) to find the killer.
Filled with comedy, mystery, suspense, and wacky powers, Ford pulls you along through Winter's highs and lows. A good read, even if you're not into the Young Adult market.
I received this book as part of a blog tour in exchange for an honest review.
I struggled a bit with this one. The concept seemed a bit far fetched and hard for me to wrap my head around.
What would you do if you could kiss someone and see their deepest thoughts? I would probably think I had completely lost my mind. I don't think I would be able to kiss all of those people and not vomit, personally.
This story hits on some tough topics, rape, murder, teen pregnancy, and shouldn't be read by the faint of heart or a younger teen.
I did find myself stumbling at one point with an editing error and it distracted me a bit. "they covered their hands with their mouths" was on the page in the bathroom scene where Winter tries to learn Darcy's secrets. But other than that, it was well edited and well written. I liked the story and the concept, but think the subject matter might have been a little heave for the target audience.
I am a fan of young adult fiction, but this one was a bit annoying. The author must have thought that in order to write a YA book, she had to use dirty slang words and offensive language to make it relateable? It was a bit pointless for me in this storyline; the plot would not have suffered without most of it.
The book is about a girl named Winter who can read people's minds only when she kisses them. She then has to use this "power" to try to solve a murder. Parts of the book were funny and parts were dark and disturbing. Overall it kept my attention and I wanted to keep reading to find out what the conclusion was, even though it was pretty predictable. It was fast paced and an okay read.
It had a really cool unique premise, it was also well written, but got a little too "teenage" in some parts and warning there is murder and rape in the story. I would definitely read a sequel if the author ever decides to write one to see Winter as a detective or spy kissing people for a living. Clever book, but wish the ending had been longer and more satisfying, it wrapped up really fast.
