Hidden Talents is a serial work. This is book #3. It's been months now since the mayhem-loving telepath Jin sought asylum with a group of rogue Talents living in Paris while he waited for word from his leader. Boredom and uncertainty have pushed him to his limits, and the only thing keeping him occupied is his determination to figure out what's hiding behind the powerful psychic shields of Ken, the scowling, sharp-tongued young man with the pale, scarred skin, mismatched green eyes, and inexplicable allure. Now that Ken's older brother Sky has laid himself out with his old heroin habit, it looks like Jin finally has room to swoop in and win the little monster over -- but Ken isn't making it easy. Meanwhile, Aki hits the town in an effort to keep his head above the water as he mourns for Luke, and Jackson Gadamer finally finds the opening he needs to escape the walls of KGA and start making preparations for war. Won't Jin be pleased...

Oh, I want to throw a tantrum of my own!!! This can't be over. I must know more!
There are so many facets to each character and such development between them and the story itself, you could hardly believe it possible in such a short story. And yet, each and everyone is individually represented, a clear presence in the story but with a myriad of connections to everyone else. Their reasons and justifications still partly unknown, leaving the reader to decipher the code and understand them. Amazing writing and fantastic story! Looking forward to the next installment.
I am reviewing this AFTER having read through all the available series, #1-4. Initially the first one, honestly, gave me a headache. There was just so much information all at once. I felt like -- and still do-- I should make a character map with the people, their connections, and their Talents. There is a lot to capture your interest. There is just A LOT going on. Each of the characters has a Talent- they are empaths, pre-cognitive, telekinetic, etc. Then they can feel each other or block each other, they have old relationships and new interactions, there is a big agency trying to control them all, a main bad guy, and then we meet them individually along the way. I could tell after the first one there was a lot of potential, and I am glad I kept reading. By the fourth piece the writing is clearer, engaging, I am invested in the characters, and its funny at the same time.
I wouldn't recommend reading JUST the first piece. It will leave you wanting. But, if you want to get all four-- and hopefully there are more on the way, which it seems like according to the authors blog-- you will enjoy the adventure.
Look out for Sky-- the high class Rent Kid (basically), who can empathically give you what he is feeling, on top of what you are feeling-- if you get my drift. Genius! And Jin, the cocky mind-reader who partakes with Sky, but has a thing for Ken. And poor Ken, who I can not wait to see fulfilled (and I'll admit it-- naked with Jin). The evil-bitch female character is a little alarming, but written so well that you can't hold the fact that the only female character is totally crazy against the author. Overall, I was pissed when the fourth piece ended and I was left wanting... always a good sign.
3.5 I think the series is getting better as it goes along...or maybe I've just gotten to roughly the middle of the "book" this series of novellas obviously should have been. You know how a book often picks up in the middle, once you've met all the characters and the plot is established enough to progress without needing to interrupt itself with explanations? Yep, that's where the story is at this point.
I am finding that I would like a little more world-building. I'm confused about characters' ability to die and come back. How does that work? What about the bodies? Plus, if people so readily come back from the dead, why is everyone mourning Luke's death? Similarly, I am befuddled about people's ages. Everyone seems to be in their mid-twenties or younger, but a couple have been together (like, together-together) for 8-9 years. Jin is 22, Ken is younger while Mark and Lip are older. The rest I don't know about and I don't know how much older or younger those characters are than Jin. So, I don't know how to visualise them. I am still enjoying the story, however.
Well the character of Sky is really messed up and I'm trying to figure out why he's so weak. I guess, or know some people just are and there's no explanation. It makes me kind of squirmy that I read this and picture his humiliation and everyone's disgust of him....even his own brother. Must be the dark side of me, but really, I just want to see where the story of Jin and Ken go. That's my main interest. Thought Jin is really a piece of work...Ken is totally understandable why he is the way he is....brutally. Felize Cinco de Mayo!
Is there anyone that Jin doesn't sleep with??? LOL. Ken is turning out to be quite the little mystery. I loved when Sky came and just sat quietly with Ken watching TV.
