Richard didn't know what was in store for him when his beautiful and seemingly normal wife started to exhibit strange behavior. She swore she could read his emotions, know what he was thinking. One night, she accuses him of infidelity, claiming she had read his emotions and knew he felt guilty. Then, she assumed something else he felt too, something she thought he wanted her to do... had she really read his mind? Did he really want her to... well, read her story to find out.
Michelle Devon (Michy) has two children, a daughter (24) and a son (18), who refuse to finish baking, no matter how many times she shoves their heads in the oven. Michy is also in love with an identical twin (4?), though she’s not sure which one he is. Her best friend, lovingly known as Buffy (??), rounds out her perfect family of choice, along with three kitty cats, two dogs, and a few invisible friends, along with the people who live inside her head.
Michy was faced with making a choice between her head exploding or becoming successful as a novelist. Determining that the latter would be more painful, she nearly chose the explosion, until she was reminded that the kids were bad at cleaning up messes so she’d just have to do it herself. Novelist it would be.
Diagnosed with congestive heart failure and pulmonary arterial hypertension in 2011, she has spent most of the past two years learning how to live again after nearly dying twice. If asked what she does for her ‘day job’, she’ll answer, “I’m a full-time professional dreamer…”
A decent, little story. The narrator of the story really is tied to emotions. Simply not hers. She's tied to the person with the strongest emotions near her: her boyfriend who became her husband, Richard. This story showed me what it might be like to be an untrained empath. Not a good thing, in my opinion. But the story is well written.
Oh for crying out loud, how many times are you going to write the phrase "I am an empath....after-all I am an empath....I'm an empath...empath....empath." We get the picture, the character is an empath. I rated this 2 stars because of all the redundancies. Story was barely ok. But author needs to perform more research on empaths and empathic abilities.
What an amazingly complex short story! I normally don't like short stories because they seem rushed or incomplete but "Empath" would suffer, in my opinion, if it were lengthened. It is perfect just as it is.
I can sense that you wanted me to say something related to my thoughts of the story but I have nothing to say. I speechless. Great story. I thought it was a self help book..lol
Awesome ending! Great Short story. It'll only take you a few minutes to read so it's definitely worth it. After all it might be something you'll enjoy.
