Rate this book
The Stalker is a short science fiction story set in the present day, in a parallel universe that is very similar to our own. The hero, John "Heart" Wolanski, is a professional Starcraft player trying to make a living far away from home, in the Mecca of Starcraft, South Korea. While John struggles to keep mentally focussed on his career and the game he plays, he is confronted by an annoying and possibly sentient glitch in the game itself. As the stakes grow higher, John worries about his mental condition. The story takes place in a parallel universe where the names of the professional players are different, but it is based on the reality of present-day professional Starcraft gamers who live in South Korea and elsewhere around the world.

I grew up in a small town on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Canada, watching old Star Trek reruns in the evening and Doctor Who episodes in the middle of the night. I loved watching Cosmos with Carl Sagan, and every night I dreamed about traveling in a starship of my imagination.

I went to the University of British Columbia and graduated with a degree in Physics, with a minor in Astronomy. My father introduced me to computers when I was young, and I remain fascinated with them to this day. From my humble Heathkit with its monochrome screen to my modern-day powerhouse PC with virtual reality, I gravitated towards games and simulations that could take me places I had never been.

Today I work as a technical writer for the world’s largest video game company. I also write articles on the history of computing at Ars Technica. I recently published my fifth science fiction novel, Silicon Minds of Mars. It’s full of everything I love: space travel, alien worlds, intelligent robots, and deep questions about the nature of our existence.

As we hurtle towards an unknown future, I’m positive that science fiction can help guide us through the complex challenges we face. After all, the best way to predict the future is to invent it.

I currently live in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with my multi-talented and fiercely intelligent wife, Jennifer.
