This is a continuation of Kyle's X-23:Innocence Lost, and it does not disappoint. If anything, it's even better than the first one.

Everything is being told in flashbacks from Luara/X-23's point of view, while she is being detained by Captain America...and represented by Daredevil.

description

X-23 goes looking for her mother's family. In the last volume she and her cousin were both much younger, and her mother sent Laura in to save her niece from a serial killer.
Her cousin was told none of it happened, but she still has nightmares. Also, X-23's aunt has hooked up with a smarmy boyfriend that isn't helping the situation out any. The family dynamic was done very well here, and I loved that the aunt immediately took Laura into her home.

Meanwhile, the folks from the place that cloned her are hot on her trail. And they've sent in her handler, Kimura, who is a psychotic assassin that Laura is conditioned to be unable to harm.

description

*Important Spoilery Stuff Happens*

Since Laura was cloned from Wolverine's DNA, and she has very limited self-worth at this point, she sets out on a mission to track him down.
And kill him.
Because she thinks if she's nothing but a weapon that destroys everything, then how much worse must the guy she came from be, right?
Awww, yeah! It's a SNIKT! fight!

description

Wha..?!
Yeah, it's a surprisingly tender Snikt! fight. Which made more sense than if Wolverine had just carved her up and left her bleeding.

description

Now that Matt and Steve have heard her story, it's up to Cap to decide what to do with this little girl. He wants to prosecute her for all of the crimes she committed while under the control of the Facility that raised her, but Daredevil thinks that even if he turns her over to S.H.I.E.L.D. she'll just be used as another weapon.
So what do they decide to do with her?

This continues straight on from X-23: Innocence Lost and is just as great. Laura's in SHIELD custody and is being interrogated by Captain America himself (for reasons that are explained as the story unfolds) with Matt 'I'm Not Daredevil' Murdock for the defence.

This is high on action and high on what I believe the kids are calling 'the feels'. It has pushed Laura even higher on my 'favourite characters' and 'superheroes I want to adopt' lists.

Laura's story continues. Things pick up from right before she escaped the facility that cloned her. Laura is recounting these events to Captain America and Matt Murdock.

Laura went to her Aunt and cousin's home to have a normal life, but her creators aren't done with her yet...her handler has survived and she intends on bringing her back.

Target X is interesting because it focuses on Laura attempting to live a normal life. Seeing an assassin try to be a real girl is pretty funny.
description
She tells Megan the truth that she was in fact grabbed by a predator and she shares some additional information with her.

I enjoyed the volume, but it felt a bit more familiar. Super expensive killing machine on the loose and the creators are trying to reclaim it. I know I've seen that story with Logan a few times. Despite being a clone of Wolverine, Laura stands out as a unique and interesting character.

When I first heard about X-23, I'd assumed she was a stunt character. She's just like Wolverine except she's a hot teenage girl and she also has claws in her feet! Maybe that was the original intention for her, but Kyle has put some serious work into making her far more than just a stunt character. In fact, he's made her one of my favorites.

Picking up where X-23: Innocence Lost left off, Target X gives even more of Laura's backstory. Laura has found her mother's sister, and tries to have a normal life with her. Obviously, it doesn't last, but it was nice to watch her forming relationships. I admit, I got a little misty eyed with that locket at the end.

There's also some new information about her time at the facility. Namely, this book introduced a new character, Kimura. Kimura's entire job seems to have been just to make Laura more miserable than she was already. Hated her. She was a little over the top for my taste, honestly, but maybe somebody over the top was needed next to Laura's reserve?

Laura also has significant interactions with Wolverine and Captain America. Wolverine she seeks out, for obvious reasons. I was very pleased with how Kyle handled that meeting. Captain America, too, was handled nicely. It was a great way to handle obligatory big character guest spots in a minor character book.

4 stars if you read this as a stand alone volume as I did years ago, but if you read it just after "Innocence lost" this is another 5 stars read. More a second half than a sequel of the previous story. And the art is just awesome.

This was another great one!

Its so well written and you really feel for her character. Happiness is denied to her twice but what happens when she is back and meeting her father though the writers will expand on that in the X-Force series but so far they managed to give her one hell of an origin and reunion and also a tragic thing which will make the audience relate to he and a really great status quo.

Really well written with awesome art!

I thought that the art style was beautiful but I think they didn't draw Laura as her age very well. As for the actual story, I thought that it was really good. I didn't expect to see Steve in this story, so that was a nice surprise!

I wasn't a fan of this. There was something off about the art style. Also, there was something about the story and the way the characters acted that felt like it all belonged in a 90s comic, which is not a positive thing for me. Characters trying too hard to be badasses actually don't look that cool.

I'm on a mission to read as many issues as I can that has Laura Kinney in those.
Because, she is possibly my most favourite character ever in this multiverse? Maybe?

My smol, fucked by fate, child. You are so cherished. And awesome.

I really enjoyed this one and thought it was a great followup to the X-23: Innocence Lost storyline. It continues where that one left off. It’s told from the perspective of Laura having been captured by someone who’s questioning her about who she is and what she’s done, trying to determine if she is X-23. The story is then flashbacks from her life, showing how the previous story ended and what happened to her since then. There were a few elements of the plot that didn’t entirely work for me, like Laura so quickly and easily telling someone about her, her abilities and a weakness, of sorts. Seemed something that was just thrown in because it was needed to make a later plot line work. But overall I enjoyed the story and the artwork, which all worked together well.

This was excellent. Basically talking about how Laura went to her aunt and cousin and tried to be normal. But we all know that doesn't last long. Only thing kind of took me back was cap felt bit out of character especially since bucky had similar time as Laura. Also, hate we had to link this back to NYX and that terrible choice for Laura. Rest was great.

Thanks to Anne for recommending. Despite a recap of the first book in this series, I felt adrift without a good feel for the characters. The central character is a female (hot) version of X-Men's Wolverine. Excellent artwork.

'Darlin', they try to take you from there, then they're asking for a world of hurt.'

HOLY SHIT, THIS WAS EVEN BETTER IN PLACES THAN THE FIRST.

What a well-executed continuation to the previous arc. Laura in high school is such good stuff and finding a family only to—sobs. I really liked the not known before pieces from her origin story and man, she's gone through some fucked up shit. The villainess is great in this and Logan calling Laura kid is such a highlight alkjhsgdf.

This is totally worth 5 stars but I can't in good conscience give them because at 14 and even at 11 years old, Laura looks too sexualized and that's just not acceptable. Like I love the art and the arcs are amazingly well done but god, boobs and cleavage galore for that young a girl is just messed up.

Lastly, Steve Rogers can go fuck himself.

Following up with the first volume this one is set before she joins the X-Men.

Yost once again writes down a good definition of the character, her inner pains and conflicts and if you like X-23 this is a must read to dig into her personality and motivations.

What cost the book another star are 2 things:
- The bad girl, an ott sadistic bitch. When characters are so overtly evil, not even cunningly evil, just I-laugh-when-you-suffer evil, I quickly lose all interest in them.
- The art, quite bland but with a few very good vignettes here and there.

A Bourne-style (or is that Hannah?) action thriller with great art and a neat main character. I like how the whole story is a flashback told to twin "acting judges" of Cap and Daredevil. There's a few other famous Marvel characters, a good arc, and violent fight scenes. Not a bad place to start with the character.

I would totally read a six issue series with the feel of the five pages she spends in high school, though. Hell, it'd make a great TV series.

A great continuation. I don't really like the retcons placed in so quickly, but they are handled well. I really like the way this story plays out, the flashing back and forth from the interrogation room and all. This comic does a really good job of endearing Laura to the reader. The ending is wonderful.

Still weird that 3 of the main female characters had to get character development by abuse, but Laura's friendship with Megan was very compelling, and I legit was in doubt about what would happen do Megan and Debbie

This series of comics was fantastic. This is a continuation of Laura’s origin story from X-23: Innocence Lost. This volume follows Captain America who’s captured Laura and makes her stand her case with Matt Murdock as her defender. This volume is also told in the past/present thing, which works for some incredible storytelling. The entire story was compelling, especially with Laura being such a intriguing character. I think I liked this even better than the first one.

Please read this if you ever read any Marvel comics. Especially if you want to get into Marvel comics and you don’t know where to start. I’d 100% recommend starting with this series

Dark, deep, and oh so badass, this is a brilliant comic that packs a ton of story and character into its pages—more than some writers manage in an entire run. This really was outstanding comics, with great art, a hard-hitting story, and so many small moments done to perfection. Brilliant from top to bottom. My highest recommendation.

More drama, more character building more awesomeness.

I like this character, she's complex and there is so much meat for her in terms of development, this second 6 issue series is absolutely wonderful.

World: The art is good, it has a strong sense of motion and the character models are wonderful, but I found the color scheme to be a bit bland and overly warm, but hey maybe it's the intention of the series but I did not care for it. The world building what absolutely fantastic, it weaved into the last series pieces that would serve this tale and also build the world and history of this character. It was great adding Kimura in and the way those past events played into current events with Cap and Matt fantastic writing.

Story: Very solid story that is paced well and kept me reading and guess. It kept teasing death and it did not cheat, it did a good job at making the the threat real and believable. The stuff with Megan was also wonderful, giving Laura time to develop as a kid and also as a human being, wonderful! The threat and the framing device was also effective in setting the tension to the story. I like this, it's good, it's tragic and real, I really want more of this character.

Character: Laura's a wonderfully real character and she acts like what we expect from her. She's a child without a childhood and her interaction with Megan and the outside world is great, it gives us a fresh look at mundane things and also gives a lot of characterization and room for Laura to grow. Megan is great for this series, tying her even in the last series and giving her a chance to play off of Laura, these two lost children finding each other is great and their interactions golden. Kimura is also a wonderful villain, shes relentless and wholly evil but allows for the rest of the characters to move forward at a fast pace and gives the drive for this story that keeps readers guessing and reading. The framing with Cap and Matt is also great as it allows this book to tie into the greater MU giving Laura and her struggles context.

It's a good story, I really enjoyed it and I want more of her. Yes! There is a series staring her and eventually All New Wolverine!!!

Onward to the next book!

Target X continues x-23's origin story after the events in Innocence Lost. After being forced to kill her own mother with the trigger scent, Laura runs away to the only people who might accept her as family. Unfortunately, her handler, Kimura, is not far behind.

Honestly, I have no idea why more people haven't read these two graphic novels, as both of them are really strong. Target X does a fantastic job of picking things up right after the dramatic conclusion of Innocence Lost. The six issue series shows Laura's continuous struggle to become a person, not a weapon. The author, Craig Kyle does a great job balancing the books multiple timelines (Target X has a frame story, where X-23 is being questioned by Captain American and Daredevil, as well as the post-Innocence Lost storyline, and several scenes from her days in Weapon X). The characters presented here are memorable, as are the book's nail biting action sequences. The character of Kimura can feel a little shoe horned in at first, but she proves to be a formidable foe. The only real complaint I have is over some out the outfits the female characters wear. When it comes to Kimura, it's just eye roll worthy. When it comes to fifteen year old Laura, it can be a little more disturbing.

I would recommend both Innocence Lost and Target X to fans of X-men and comics in general. They are examples of how to do an origin story well, and I'm so pleased I that I chose to read them.

the structure of this series is great. By telling story in flashbacks as part of Cap and Murdock's interrogation, the reader is left with some mystery. This propels the reading along.
however, many of the story beats feel forced or unmotivated. One character has a sudden change of heart and I actually thought a page was missing. There was no reason given.

The main aspect of the book I enjoyed was the character. Laura is a great concept and fun to read. Particularly while adapting to life as a normal teen in San Francisco. Although, even there the scenes felt random and jumpy.

Another drawback was the art. Every character is drawn with feminine facial features. It is jarring. Captain is a lot of things, but he is not pretty.

I was not expecting such a powerful book but it delivered on numerous fronts. x-23 is a weapon x project with a dark past, Craig Kyle does an excellent job writing a tragic childhood story. The interview approach with Cap and Daredevil is nice touch and adds some good depth into this flashback story. Like I said, I was not expecting such a dark, violent, sad story but it was really well done. The imagery is very powerful and used very well through out the book, the art is crisp and clear and complements the writing nicely. Overall I was expecting Kyle to deliver but he nailed this book.
